On a day trip to Okutama (about an hour west of Shinjuku), I met with wasabi cultivator David Hulme, an Australian ex-pat in Japan and former journalist who has been working hard to expand knowledge of wasabi growing while restoring an old wasabi patch!
奥多摩への日帰り旅行で、ワサビ栽培者David Hulmeさん（在日在住オーストラリア人の元記者）と出会いました！彼は古い山葵谷を復元するように成長しているワサビの知識を拡大するために懸命に働いています。
Recently, I visited Asahi Beer’s Fukushima Brewery for the first time. Fukushima Prefecture is famous for its sake, where the Fukushima Sake Brewers Cooperative consists of nearly 60 sake breweries. Moreover, the annual Japan Sake Awards has awarded the prefecture the most gold prizes of all of Japan for four years running as of 2016! Given this longstanding reputation for sake breweries, I was very excited to learn about how beer breweries might compare.
最近、アサヒ福島工場を初めて訪れました。 福島県は、福島酒造協同組合が約60酒蔵で構成されていることから有名らしいです。 また、毎年恒例の日本酒賞は、2012年～2016年の4年間にわたり、全国で最も多く金賞を授与されました！ とても評価のあるビール醸造所ですので、ビールと日本酒がどのように比較されるかを知ることに興味がありました。
Have you ever heard of Watermelon Splitting? Suika-wari (スイカ割り, literally “Watermelon Splitting”) is a traditional Japanese game that involves splitting a watermelon with a stick while blindfolded. It is often played by kids in the summertime, usually at beaches but also at picnics, festivals, and other summer events. 夏の食べ物といえばやっぱりスイカですね！日本人にとって、スイカといえばスイカ割りが定番ですよね。私は、外国人ですので、今年は初めてスイカ割について知りました。一般的に海水浴場などの砂浜で行われる日本の夏の風物詩ですね。
スイカ割りって、日本だと夏って印象ですが、海外ではないと思います。 似たような文化はメキシコで行われる「ピニャータ」ということかもしれません。とても面白そうですので、絶対やってみたいなぁと思いました。最近やっとお台場海浜公園に自分自身でやってみました！
At the end of May, my family came to visit Japan to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. At 60, according to the Chinese zodiac, a person has returned to the calendar sign under which the person was born after completing a full cycle of the twelve-pronged zodiac calendar. Although originally a Chinese tradition, it is arguable that Japanese society probably observes this tradition more closely now.
5月下旬、私の家族は日本に来て、父の60歳の誕生日を祝いました。日本では、還暦祝いは満年齢で60歳（数え年で61歳）を迎えたことを喜び、長寿を祝う行事です。還暦は元来中国からの伝統ですが、今は日本の方がもっと人気で、伝統を守っていますね。今まで、中国、韓国やシンガポールも住みましたが、日本以外では、この行事は残っていません。

地方自治体は、観光客誘致に関する情報を収集するために、外国人のモニタツアーを開催し、自治体から招待されたので、このモニター・ツアーに、最近参加しました。今回は私の経験について、話したいと思います。
May and June are the most popular months of the year to go clam digging (潮干狩り, shiohigari ) in Japan. You may think that clam digging itself is not so special, but “clam digging” is seriously an important keyword in Japanese society and history! I was very surprised by the extent to which the Japanese people love clam digging as a family activity! It also appears to get significant news coverage every year.
日本では、5月と6月が潮干狩りの季節ですね。日本人が家族と一緒に潮干狩りに行くはとても人気のある娯楽ですね。
初めて聞いた時、貝を掘ることはそれほど特別な活動ではないと思うかもしれませんが、日本の社会や歴史の中で「潮干狩り」は重要なキーワードらしいですね！また、今まで、毎年ニューズになっているそうです。私は、日本人が「潮干狩り」を楽しむことに驚きした！
