Farm Stay Experience in Odate City!
大館市の農家民宿に行ってきました!

With the rising phenomenon of “green tourism” in Japan, small remote towns have drawn more attention as getaway destinations for harried city dwellers to refresh and recharge away from sprawling metropolises. Where 90% of the population lives in densely populated cities, there is no doubt that some people in Japan have never even experienced life outside of concrete jungles!

To slow the pace down and share the inaka (country) life, residents in more rural prefectural communities offer homestay experiences to visitors.

日本では「グリーンツーリズム」の人気が高まっており、都会から離れた小さな町が注目を集めています。急成長する大都市に住む人々がリフレッシュして元気を取り戻すための「逃げ場」となっているためです。90%の日本人が人口密集地に住んでいるので、コンクリートジャングルの外で生活さえ経験したことがない人々も多いでしょう。

そのような人々に、ゆっくりとした「田舎」の生活を体験してもらうために、地方の人々が、旅行者に農家民宿を提供しています。

I recently travelled to Odate City in Akita Prefecture to stay at a local farm! Read on about my experience of authentic regional cooking, harvesting rice fields, and my appearance in a traditional cultural festival!

私は最近、秋田県の大館市に行って地元の農家民宿に泊まりました! 郷土料理の体験、米の収穫、伝統的な文化祭への出演について書いてみたいと思います!

ABOUT FARM STAY IN ODATE
大館市の農家民宿について

Odate City in Akita Prefecture is located in the cultural northern region of Japan. Odate has a population of about 75,000 people and is famous for the Akita Dog, a Japanese breed of dogs native to the city (check out my encounter with Akita dogs here!). What I discovered during my visit is that Odate is also full of warm people, beautiful natural scenery, delicious farm-fresh foods, and has a rich cultural history.

秋田県大館市は、人口約75,000人で、秋田犬が有名です。(私と秋田犬との出会いについては、ここをクリックしてご覧ください!)今回の経験でわかったことは、大館市も人々の温かさ、美しい自然の風景、畑や田んぼでとれた美味しい新鮮な食べ物でいっぱいであり、豊かな文化的歴史を持っているということです!

Organized by the Odate Cultural Activity Promotion Committee, farm stays can be arranged with local Japanese farm inns run by the farmers for one or two nights. Basically, you enter their home and experience their way of life for the duration of your stay!

農家民宿体験は1泊または2泊で、大館市まるごと体験推進協議会を通して予約ができます。滞在中は農家の家族の一員として、農家の生活を体験できます!

ARRIVAL IN ODATE

山内さんが迎えに来てくれた大館駅前にある、秋田犬の一家の像との集合写真。

Once we arrived to Odate Station, Yamauchi-san came to pick us up and drive us to his farm house about a 20-minute drive from the station.

大館駅に着くと、オーナーの山内さんが迎えに来て、駅から車で約20分のところにある農家民宿に連れて行ってくれました。

In front of the minshoku (home stay) named Sakekoshimai (origins for the name will be explained later! Read on~)

「酒こし舞」という農家民宿に到着!(名前の由来は後で説明しますね~)

The moment I entered the house, Yamauchi-san introduced us to his wife, insisting we call her okaa-san (meaning “mother” in Japanese) and himself, otoo-san (meaning “father” in Japanese).

家に入ってすぐに、山内さんが「お母さん」を紹介してくれました!

After a quick orientation around the farm house and relaxing in the local onsen (hot spring), it was time for us to make dinner together with our host family!

地元の温泉でリラックスした後、ホストファミリーと一緒に夕食を作る時間になりました!

MAKING KIRITAMPO
きりたんぽを作りましょう


For dinner, we learned to make kiritampo, Odate’s traditional rice dish!
 
夕食では、大館名物「きりたんぽ」作りが体験できました!

First, we had to mash the rice (a process the locals call “kill half to death”)!

まず、ご飯をつぶします(地元の人々は「半殺し」と呼んでいます)!

Although the rice was super sticky, I was surprised to learn it was not mochi rice, but just regular Akita rice right from their farm!

米は非常に粘り気がありましたが、餅米ではなく、山内さんの田んぼでとれたふつうの秋田こまちでした!びっくりしました!

Now we are ready to start grilling!

Tampo on the grill! (FYI, “kiritampo” means “cut tampo”, so before it is cut it is called just “tampo”!)

たんぽを焼いています!
To eat tampo, we would simply spread some local miso sauce onto the grilled rice. At first, I thought that it would be an incredibly plain rice dish, but it turned out to be delicious!
 
まずはタンポに地元の味噌ディップを塗って食べます。とてもシンプルですが、意外と美味しかったですよ!
We also grilled some fresh sanma (mackerel pike)~

サンマも焼きました!
Leftover tampo was cute up and used to make “kiritampo nabe” (hotpot using cut-up tampo). Super delicious!
 
残ったタンポは、「きりたんぽ鍋」に入れて食べます。 とても美味しかったです!

ODATE CULTURAL FESTIVAL

Lucky for us, the weekend we visited Odate happened to coincide with one of the largest culture festivals in the city!

幸運なことに、私たちが大館を訪れた週末は、大館市で最も大きなの文化祭の1つが開催されていました!

We were all asked to perform for the “Odate City Children’s Festival: Rural Hometown Entertainment and Lifestyle Culture Experience.”

「大館市こどもまつり:郷土芸能と生活文化の体験」に出演してみないかと誘ってもらいました~!

We were dressed in traditional clothes and participated with local resident experts in the main performance, Sake Koshimai! (Perhaps this name might sound familiar, as it is the name of our farm inn!)
 
伝統的な衣装を着て、地元の踊り手たちと一緒にメインパフォーマンスの「酒こし舞」に参加しました!

I did not expect the stage or auditorium to be so large!

So, what is Sake Koshimai?

Sake Koshimai is a traditional dance originating from the mid-1800s Odate. The ruler of Odate at that time had ordered a performance to celebrate how rich rice is harvested annually so that cake can be made. Sake Koshimai is a dance that follows the process of sake brewing, where people sing “misaina” while performing various stages of the sake-making process from rice milling and steaming to adding water and fermenting. The dance tends to involve a group of people with many tools such as water bottles, jars, barrels, spatulas, baskets, and hand towels.
「酒こし舞」とは?

この酒こし舞というのは秋田県内でもめずらしい風流踊りのひとつである。舞の始まりは安政2年(1855年)以前のこととされる。その昔、大館(旧大館市)を治めていた殿様が年貢完納を祝い地域の芸能を披露するように命じた。粕田ではこの時、酒こし舞を踊ったというのが安政2年(1855年)とされるからである。酒こし舞は民間でおこなってきた酒造りの過程を踊りにあらわしたもので、ミサイナを唄いながら、米研ぎ、米蒸かし、瓶に麹を混ぜ、どぶろくの種を入れ、次に水を加えて掻き混ぜるという動作が見られる。さらに布巾で瓶に蓋をし発酵させ、時々味見をし、酒が首尾よくできあがって慶ぶ、という一連のものである。そのため踊りは大人数でもって、採り物として水瓶、笊、樽、桶、一升瓶、徳利、ヘラ、升、布巾、手拭いなど道具が多く用いられ、滑稽味のあふれた所作も多い。囃子には鼓と擦り鉦がある。酒を造ることができるように、豊かな米がとれたことを祝う意味もあるのだろう。

What fascinates me the most about this dance is that it features women at the center of the sake-making process. In most sake breweries around Japan, women are not even allowed into areas where sake is made or being fermented. (Read more about my past experiences with “Sake Making at Tamagawa Brewery” and the “Aoki Sake Brewery Tour“!)

We made it onto the local newspaper! =D

After the festival, I had the opportunity to meet with the Superintendent of Education for Odate City, Mr. Takahashi, and his advisor on elementary school English education, Ms. Tanimoto. We spoke on the efforts made in Odate City to preserve the local history and cultural traditions, passing on knowledge to the next generation.

祭りの後、大館市教育委員会の教育長の高橋氏と、小学校英語教育推進アドバイザーの谷本氏にお会いできました。地元の歴史や文化的伝統を守り、知識を次世代に伝えるために大館市で行った取り組みについて話をしてくれました。

FARM EXPERIENCE
農作業体験をしましょう

As part of our farm stay, Otoo-san brought us to his rice fields to experience farming.

農家体験の一環として、お父さんに田んぼに連れて行ってもらい、農業を体験しました。
The fields were beautiful and it was therapeutic spending an afternoon there as we felt like we were the only person in the area for miles!
 
田んぼはきれいでした!私たちしかいないような気分になれました~

I also rode a tractor for the first time!! Although I thought it would be quite difficult to operate at first, it was quite similar to driving a Go-Kart.
 
また、初めてトラクターに乗りました~! 最初は操作が難しいと思っていましたが、ゴーカートを運転するのに似ていました。

Last Thoughts
最後の感想

Similar to the cozy bed-and-breakfast inns in rural England or Europe, farm stays in Japan provide a comfortable room in a real home in addition to many extra perks, such as delicious home-cooked meals and local experiences! The Odate Farm Stay is a great way for local farmers to connect with visitors who want a taste of life on the countryside, living off of fresh farm produce and being surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. It’s also a great way to venture outdoors, meet a new community, and immerse yourself in different ways of life that you may have never even thought about before.

Through my experience in Odate with the Yamauchis, I learned about many Japanese traditions first-hand, had the opportunity to actively engage in Odate life (even becoming a member of the community festival!), and established a close bond with an “Okaa-san” and “Otoo-san” who extended their hospitality with open arms.

Although the “relaxing” trip to the rural countryside life turned out to be more vigorous than I had expected, the unforgettable memories made were more than worth it. I already can’t wait for my next visit to the Yamauchi’s and returning to the comforting Sake Koshimai!

イギリスやヨーロッパの田舎の居心地のよいベッドアンドブレックファーストと同じように、日本の農家民宿は、美味しい家庭料理や地元の体験などで楽しませてくれる宿泊施設です。大館の農家民宿に滞在しながら、郷土料理や農作業などを通して、農家の生活を体験することができました!大館の地元の人々とふれあい、秋田県の伝統について学びながら、素敵な思い出ができました!農家のお父さんとお母さんにとても感謝しています!

田舎への「リラックス」するための今回の旅行は、思っていたよりも活動的な内容でしたが、一生に一度の経験は忘れられないものです。「また大館に行きたい」と思えるようになりました!
