Do you like concerts? Since young, I have often attended music concerts from philharmonic and opera to contemporary and jazz, and still very much appreciate being in a concert hall surrounded by music… I was surprised to learn that Tokyo actually has many concerts for reasonable/free tickets! Was invited to a Two Piano Concert in Bunkyo-Ku the other day; it was a beautiful performance (click here to watch a video).

日本特有のホワイトデー風習

White Day (ホワイトデー) is a day marked in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China on March 14, one month after Valentine’s Day. However, Japan probably takes the custom for this day to a different level. On White Day, men return gifts to women who gifted them chocolates on Valentine’s Day. Believe it or not, White Day has been celebrated in Japan since 1978: it was started by the confectionery company back then, promoting men to buy their marshmallows as the return gift for Valentine’s Day. Now, flowers, candies, and many other varied gifts are popular along with chocolates and marshmallows. Often, the color of the gift is white because of the name of the day (unsurprisingly). Again, department stores have *many* advanced reminders with gift displays so men will have no excuse to forget about this special day for the ladies. The term sanbai gaeshi (三倍返し, ‘triple the return’) is used to describe the generally recited rule for men that the return gift should be two to three times the worth of Valentine’s gift from the lady.

3月14日はホワイトデーで「バレンタインデーに貰ったプレゼントのお返しを贈る日」です。バレンタインデーと同じくこうした男性が女性にプレゼントを渡すイベントを楽しみにしている人も多いでしょう。でも、ホワイトデーに何を渡すかによって、相手に伝えたい気持ちの意味が変わると思います。ホワイトデーは日本で生まれた日本特有のイベントなので、外国人はあまり知られていないかもしれません。初めて聞く時、「ホワイトデーはなんで「ホワイト」なの？誰が3月14日って決めたの？　いつどんな風に始まった風習なの？」と考えていて、とても興味があったので、調査しました。

Recently received invitations to an upcoming Red Carpet Party event in Tokyo, to be held at the Shangri-La Hotel on Friday, 23 March. Unlike in the U.S. (or during my time in Shanghai and Seoul), formal gala and black tie ball events seem pretty uncommon in Japan. The only one I have attended since moving to Tokyo was the Gala held for the 2017 CJIFF China-Japan Film Festival awards ceremony. Anyone know why this is? Perhaps this is mainly a cultural influence, as traditional Japanese culture tends to revere ceremonial events that are more meditative and muted (e.g.: think of tea ceremony, ikebana flower arrangement, or Noh theatre) rather than celebratory and exuberant in the Western preference.

最近、友達から３月２３日（金）のレッドカーペットネットワーキングパーティーのVIP招待状をもらいました。東京では、ガラやレッドカーペットのイベントはあまりないですね。私は、ボールガウンやフォーマルドレスでドレスアップすることが好きですので（女性の皆様はそうでしょう？笑）、東京で正式的なガラや晩餐会のイベントはあまりなくて残念です。去年はCJIFFという「２０１７年度東京・日本映画週間」の開催ゴールド・クレイン賞授賞式に行く時、レッドカーペットがありましたけど、それは一回だけの催しでした。

The Embassy of Singapore in Tokyo held a New Year’s event for Singaporean Residents in Japan recently at the Hotel New Otani. It was fun to gather with fellow Singaporeans and bond over local foods such as Beef Rendang and Bak Kut Teh. It was also surprisingly homey to hear so much Singlish in one room in Tokyo. 🙂 During the National Day celebrations, Merlion statues and Singapore flags were placed everywhere. Also had the opportunity to meet the current Ambassador of Singapore to Tokyo and his wife.

As 4 of 5 ladies at Whiz Partners have birthdays in January～February, we had an Aquarius Birthday Party to celebrate (treated by our boss, who also has his birthday in late January ^^). The venue of choice was Restaurant Crescent, a two Michelin star in Shiba Park!

弊社の女性社員は5人しかいないですが、４人のお誕生日は１月末から２月中旬までですので、水瓶座のお誕生日会をやりました～　（上司の誕生日も1月末ですので、先日、皆で御馳走になりました！笑）今回の会食は港区芝公園にある「レストラン・クレッセント」という高級フレンチ料理です。それに、外観は邸宅風でミシュラン2ツ星のお店ですので、お洒落なダイニングでした！

Originally I started this blog in Japanese for work, as it is sent out as a weekly newsletter and I get to improve my Japanese while living in Tokyo, but I have since received some requests to write in English as well. With bilingual content, non-Japanese friends can read about my Tokyo adventures, while Japanese readers can also hopefully practice some English 😉 So starting today, I will try to include English text alongside the Japanese and make it more bilingual!

1月２２日（月曜日）は今年の初雪で、それに一日でたくさん降りましたね。私は雪を見ると、何年間かボストンやソウルなど、とても寒いところに住んでいる時の思い出が頭に浮かびます。ボストンやソウルは冬の時、よくマイナス15～20℃まで下がります。超寒かったです！！外に出ると、すぐ顔や露出した皮膚が痛くなりますよ。

挨拶：レイチェルと申します！皆さん、はじめまして～　私は、リン・レイチェル（英語：RACHEL LENG；中国語：凌惠颖）と申します。私はシンガポール人ですが、シンガポールで生まれて、６歳から高校時代までずっと中国の上海で育っていました。後に、アメリカのデューク大学と、ハーバードの大学院で、それぞれ奨学金をもらって勉強しました。専門は経済学と東アジア研究でした。そして、色々な興味があるので、２０１３年度のミス・シンガポール代表として「Miss Beauty with a Purpose」のタイトルをいただきました。同時に、アメリカのHerCampusという雑誌の「キャンパスセレブ」と、Yale大学のChina Hands組織の「２5歳未満の25人の優秀者」（China Hands 25-Under-25 Rising Stars）というリストの一人に入りました。これまでも、様々な雑誌、テレビ番組、新聞などのインタビューを受けたこともあり、セミナーや公開講演で定期的に講演しています。そして、2009年から2016年までに、27の本の章や学術雑誌の記事を出版しました。これらの経験に基づいて、学生と若手専門家を指導しており、2017年に優秀メンターとして奉仕したことを韓国政府より称えて頂きました。日本に来る前に、韓国のソウルでヒュンダイ（現代、현대）のシンクタンクで働いていました。そこでは、色々な東アジアの国際関係についてのレポートを書いていました。2017年から日本の投資会社で仕事をしています。同時に、東京のメディア制作会社の取締役COO兼共同創設者として、企業執行とストラテジーを行います。日本の会社に入って、そして東京で会社を立ち上がった理由は、アジアとアメリカふくめて海外から高い評価を受けている日本のビジネスや社会や文化にとても興味があったからでした。日本に住んで働いている外国人の私にとって、たくさん面白くて新しい経験があるかもしれないので、ここで皆さんに自分の意見をシェアしたいと思います。そして、日本語をもっとうまくなりたいから、ブログを日本語で書くのはとてもいい勉強方法だと思っています。実は、今週の2月６日（月）は私の誕生日でした。日本に来たばかりだから、日本に住んでいる友達が少ないし、もともと誕生日の予定は一人で何もできませんでした…でも、皆様は素晴らしいなあ～　誕生日を祝ってくれて本当に嬉しかったです！誕生日ランチや晩御飯を誘ってくれて、美味しい食べ物やケーキを食べました。お客様や同僚や上司からすごく綺麗な花も頂きました。初めて日本で迎えた誕生日でしたが、皆様は凄く歓迎してくれたので、幸せでした！日本に来たら、たくさんのことを勉強できるので、とても楽しいです。今後でもよろしくお願いしますね～☆
