As Japan’s heatwave brings record-breaking temperatures, a beach or island getaway is at the top of everyone’s wish-list! Did you know that Enoshima, a small island just slightly west of Kamakura, boasts some of the closest beaches to Tokyo? From Shinjuku Station, it is only about 1 hour away!

My colleague Iwami-san had been recommending this island to me for some time, so finally made it there for a day trip with my brother. Read on for photos and tips on what to do in Enoshima!

Baseball in Japan

I have heard that baseball in Japan (called “yakyū,” combining the characters for “field” and “ball”) is one of the nation’s most popular sports and often an exhilarating experience. Hence, it has been on my bucket list to witness a live game. Recently had the chance to watch the 89th Intercity Baseball Tournament between SEGASammy (Tokyo) and Mitsui Heavy Industries (Kobe). As my colleagues and I were invited by SEGASammy, we joined the SEGASammy Rooters team!

来日以来、日本の特別な野球文化について、よく耳にしましたので、自分自身で野球観戦へ行ってみたかったです。先週、初めて日本の野球観戦を見に行って嬉しかったです！セガサミー野球部が都市対抗野球の東京代表として準決勝まで進出していますので、たまたまWhiz　Partnersの後藤さんに誘われて、私は山口さんと一緒に３人でセガサミールーターズの応援に参加しました！第８９回都市対抗野球大会の優勝をめぐって、セガサミー（東京都）と三井重工神戸（神戸市）が東京ドームで試合をしました。とても楽しかったです！！！

Have you ever wanted to try driving around Tokyo in a go-kart, much like the racing video game Mario Kart? MariCar is the go-kart rental service that provides these fun tours around Tokyo! You might have seen people driving past on the public roads in various character costumes if you have been in Tokyo for long enough. Finally had the chance to try the RMaricar tour myself recently!

昔から、皆に愛され続けているマリオカートのビデオゲームを実際に公道で体験出来たら楽しいって考えたことがありますか？初めて見た時は、何かのプロモーションかと思いましたが、免許さえあれば誰でも体験できるサービスだったなんて興味を覚えました！

Tsukiji Market Tuna Fish Auction

A visit to the Tsukiji Fish Market Tuna Auction features in almost every Tokyo guidebook and is a must do in the city. Given that I now live in Tokyo, I figured it would be worthwhile to experience the auction at least once. A regular visit to the Tsukiji fish market would be to arrive around 9am or 10am and browse the many stalls. However, with only 120 visitors granted access to the famous tuna auction on any given day, securing a spot to watch the auction required a very early wake-up call (some people arrive as early as 1 am) and a little planning! 築地市場マグロの卸売市場の見学は、すべての東京のガイドブックに記載されており、都市での貴重な経験らしいです。私が東京に住んでいる以上は、マグロの競りを１回ぐらい見学に行きたいと思っていました。しかし、120人限定の訪問者のアクセスを許可されただけですので、オークションを見るための場所を確保することは、非常に早く起床して、事前に少し準備することが必要です。今回のブログにて、卸売市場に行くためのヒントをご紹介したいと思います。

I was so happy to receive my first invitation to a Japanese wedding just over a month ago. The bride: Mao Miyake-san, one of the ladies who had participated in the Oiran Dochu parade together with me last year. (For those who have not read about my experience as an Oiran, click HERE for my previous blog post!)

One of my favorite places visited when I traveled to Australia is the Sydney Fish Market! A must-visit for all those who love fresh seafood.

シドニーに行った時、私が一番好きな所はSydney Fish Market (シドニー・フィッシュマーケット)です。オーストラリアの魚は新鮮でおいしいことで有名です。シドニーでシーフードと言って、真っ先に挙がるのがフィッシュマーケット（魚市場）ですよ。

At the end of May, my family came to visit Japan to celebrate my father’s 60th birthday. At 60, according to the Chinese zodiac, a person has returned to the calendar sign under which the person was born after completing a full cycle of the twelve-pronged zodiac calendar. Although originally a Chinese tradition, it is arguable that Japanese society probably observes this tradition more closely now.

5月下旬、私の家族は日本に来て、父の60歳の誕生日を祝いました。日本では、還暦祝いは満年齢で60歳（数え年で61歳）を迎えたことを喜び、長寿を祝う行事です。還暦は元来中国からの伝統ですが、今は日本の方がもっと人気で、伝統を守っていますね。今まで、中国、韓国やシンガポールも住みましたが、日本以外では、この行事は残っていません。

Iwami-san, one of the fund managers at Whiz Partners, invited me to join him and his wife at Asakusa’s Sanja Festival (三社祭, Sanja Matsuri) held during the end of May. One of Iwami-san’s former colleagues, Yamaguchi-san, is a local from the area and has been involved in organizing one of the main attractions of the festival for more than 20 years!

皆様、三社祭に行ったことがありますか？石見さんは浅草の三社祭に招待されました。石見さんの元同僚の山口さんは、浅草の地元の人ですので、20年以上にわたって、この祭りを長く組織しています。

皆様、上野原市について、聞いたことがありますか？上野原市、山梨県の中部最東端に位置する市です。

地方自治体は、観光客誘致に関する情報を収集するために、外国人のモニタツアーを開催し、自治体から招待されたので、このモニター・ツアーに、最近参加しました。今回は私の経験について、話したいと思います。

May and June are the most popular months of the year to go clam digging (潮干狩り, shiohigari ) in Japan. You may think that clam digging itself is not so special, but “clam digging” is seriously an important keyword in Japanese society and history! I was very surprised by the extent to which the Japanese people love clam digging as a family activity! It also appears to get significant news coverage every year.

日本では、5月と6月が潮干狩りの季節ですね。日本人が家族と一緒に潮干狩りに行くはとても人気のある娯楽ですね。

初めて聞いた時、貝を掘ることはそれほど特別な活動ではないと思うかもしれませんが、日本の社会や歴史の中で「潮干狩り」は重要なキーワードらしいですね！また、今まで、毎年ニューズになっているそうです。私は、日本人が「潮干狩り」を楽しむことに驚きした！
