On July 7, 2026, I had the opportunity to join Associate Professor Yoshiko Matsumoto’s Global Business Communication course at Soka University.
I spoke about cross-cultural leadership, innovation, and some of the realities of building SeiRogai as a global startup in Japan. I did not approach the lecture from a position of having all the answers. Instead, I shared lessons that I am still learning through experience.
Whenever I return to a university classroom, I am reminded that learning is never one-way. The questions raised by students often encourage me to reconsider my own experiences from a new perspective.
2026年7月7日、創価大学経営学部の松本敬子准教授が担当される「Global Business Communication」の授業にて、ゲスト講義を行う機会をいただきました。
講義では、異文化リーダーシップやイノベーション、そして日本でグローバルスタートアップとしてSeiRogaiを築く中で経験してきたことをお話ししました。
すべての答えを持つ立場からお話しするのではなく、私自身が今も実践を通じて学び続けていることを、できるだけ率直に学生の皆さんと共有したいと思いました。
大学の教室に戻るたび、学びは決して一方通行ではないと感じます。学生の皆さんから寄せられる質問は、私自身の経験を新しい視点から捉え直す機会にもなります。

My academic background gave me a deep respect for theory. Frameworks in strategy, economics, marketing, and management help us organize complex questions.
In practice, however, business decisions rarely arrive with complete information or a single correct answer. Assumptions change, stakeholders have different priorities, and the same message can be interpreted differently across cultures.
One lesson I continue to learn is that leadership requires both analysis and judgment. We need to prepare carefully, listen closely, and still be willing to move forward when the path is not entirely clear.
私はこれまでの学びを通じて、理論の大切さを強く感じてきました。経営戦略、経済、マーケティング、マネジメントなどのフレームワークは、複雑な課題を整理するための重要な基盤となります。
一方、実際のビジネスでは、十分な情報や一つの正解が揃った状態で意思決定できることはほとんどありません。前提が変わり、関係者ごとに優先事項が異なり、同じ言葉でも文化によって受け取られ方が変わることがあります。
私自身が今も学び続けているのは、リーダーシップには分析力と判断力の両方が必要だということです。丁寧に準備し、相手の声に耳を傾けながらも、すべてが明確になる前に前へ進む決断が求められます。
Theory helps us understand the question. Experience teaches us how to act when the answer is incomplete.

When a Crisis Changes the Question
危機をきっかけに問いを見直す
I also shared how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted SeiRogai’s original plans. International travel stopped, projects were suspended, and many of our assumptions changed almost overnight.
At that time, we began asking a different question:
If people cannot visit a destination, how can we bring the destination to them?
This question eventually led to the development of Global Virtual Travel, our immersive VR360 platform.
The experience taught me that innovation does not always begin with a completely new idea. Sometimes it begins by looking at the same challenge differently. Difficult circumstances should not be romanticized, but they can encourage us to question assumptions and reconsider what is possible.
講義では、新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大によって、SeiRogaiの当初の事業計画が大きく変わった経験についてもお話ししました。国際的な移動が止まり、プロジェクトが中断し、それまで前提としていた環境が一夜にして変化しました。
そのとき、私たちは問いの立て方を変えました。
人々がその場所を訪れることができないのであれば、その場所を人々のもとへ届けることはできないだろうか。
この問いから生まれたのが、没入型VR360プラットフォームのGlobal Virtual Travelです。
この経験から、イノベーションは必ずしも全く新しいアイデアから始まるわけではないと学びました。同じ課題を、異なる角度から見直すことが出発点になる場合もあります。
困難な状況を美化するべきではありません。しかし、制約に直面することで、それまで疑うことのなかった前提を見直し、新たな可能性を考えるきっかけが生まれることもあります。

異文化リーダーシップは、相手の声を聞くことから
Cross-cultural communication involves much more than speaking different languages or understanding business etiquette.
It requires us to consider what lies behind the words: how people approach risk, express disagreement, build consensus, and develop trust.
At SeiRogai, our projects often bring together governments, businesses, educational institutions, local communities, creators, and technology partners. Each participant may have a different definition of success.
Leadership does not mean asking everyone to think in the same way. It means listening to those different perspectives, translating between them, and finding enough shared understanding to move forward together.
異文化コミュニケーションに必要なのは、複数の言語を話すことや、各国のビジネスマナーを理解することだけではありません。
リスクをどう捉えるのか、反対意見をどう伝えるのか、どのように合意を形成するのか、そして信頼関係をどう築くのか。言葉の背景にある考え方を理解することが大切です。
SeiRogaiのプロジェクトには、自治体、企業、教育機関、地域の方々、クリエイター、テクノロジーパートナーなど、さまざまな立場の人々が関わります。それぞれが考える「成功」の形も同じではありません。
リーダーシップとは、全員に同じ考え方を求めることではなく、異なる視点に耳を傾け、その間をつなぎ、共に前へ進むための理解を築くことだと考えています。

We also discussed how artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and cross-border collaboration are changing the way we work.
Tools will continue to evolve, but human qualities such as empathy, curiosity, adaptability, communication, and creativity will become even more important.
Drawing from my own experience, I shared five lessons with the students:
- Resilience matters more than early success.
- Communication should be adapted to the person and context.
- Research and small tests help reduce long-term risk.
- Relationships and networks grow in value over time.
- Sometimes completing, learning, and improving is better than waiting for perfection.
AIやデジタルトランスフォーメーション、国境を越えた協働によって、私たちの働き方は今後も変化していきます。
ツールが進化する一方で、共感力、好奇心、適応力、コミュニケーション力、創造力といった人間ならではの力は、これまで以上に重要になると思います。
私自身の経験から、学生の皆さんには五つの学びを共有しました。
- 最初から成功すること以上に、困難から立ち直り、学び続ける力が大切であること。
- 相手や状況に応じて、コミュニケーションの方法を工夫すること。
- 調査と小さな検証の積み重ねが、長期的なリスクを抑えること。
- 人とのつながりや信頼関係は、時間とともに価値を増していくこと。
- 完璧を待ち続けるより、まず形にし、学びながら改善することが大切な場合もあること。

What stayed with me most was the thoughtful engagement of the students. Their questions gave me an opportunity to pause and reflect on what years of entrepreneurship have taught me.
Few careers or businesses develop exactly according to plan. We do not need to see the entire path before taking the first step. What matters is remaining curious, asking for help when necessary, treating relationships with care, and being willing to revise our assumptions as we learn.

I left the classroom encouraged by their curiosity and with a renewed belief in the potential of the next generation to connect people across cultures with greater understanding.
今回、特に心に残ったのは、学生の皆さんが積極的に講義やディスカッションに参加してくださったことです。その質問を通じて、私自身もこれまでの起業経験から何を学んできたのか、改めて振り返ることができました。
計画通りに進むキャリアやビジネスは、ほとんどありません。最初の一歩を踏み出す前に、道のすべてが見えている必要はないと思います。
大切なのは、好奇心を持ち続けること、必要なときには周囲に助けを求めること、人とのつながりを大切にすること、そして学びながら自分の前提を柔軟に見直していくことです。
このような機会をくださった松本敬子准教授、そして率直な姿勢で講義に参加してくださった創価大学の学生の皆さんに、心より感謝申し上げます。
皆さんの好奇心に触れ、次世代を担う若者が、文化を越えて人々をつなぎ、より深い相互理解を育んでいく可能性を改めて感じる時間となりました。
