Harvard Prize Book 2018 (Presented in Spring 2019)

This past Spring, I had the honor to present the 2018 Harvard Prize Book at the Junten High School in Tokyo and also the Saint Maur International School in Yokohama.
Congratulations to both the winners!
今年の春、私は授賞者として、東京の順天高校と横浜のサンモール・インタナショナルスクールの授与式で２０１８年度のハーバード・プライズ・ブックを授与しました。
二人の受賞者の方、おめでとうございます！
| About the Harvard Prize Book Harvard Prize Books (HPB) are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. Harvard Prize Books are presented annually in nearly 2,000 high schools around the world. In Japan, about 20 schools participate in the program. Prize Books are an important way for Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) to help attract the attention of talented young students to the opportunities at Harvard College and studying liberal arts. |
| 「ハーバード・プライズ・ブック」について Harvard Prize Book（HPB, ハーバード・プライズ・ブック）は、高等部２年生の優秀生徒のうち、特にリーダーシップがあり国際的視野を持ち海外進学も考えている生徒１名に、Harvard Club Japan（ハーバード大学同窓会の日本支部）から本が送られるという行事です。毎年全世界２０００校ほどで実施されていますが、日本での実施は２０校に満たない数です。順天高校では２０１４年度から実施していて今回は４人目の受賞者を選出しました。 |

It is my second year presenting the HPB at Junten High School (click here for last year’s ceremony).
The 2019 winner was Ms. Nanoha Noriguchi!
順天高校でHPBを授与したのは2年目です。

順天高校では２０１４年度から実施していて今年の受賞者は取口七晴（とりぐちなのは）さんです!
As soon as she entered Junten High School in April 2017, Nanoha applied for the studying abroad program organized by MEXT: Tobitate!留学JAPAN, by sending a video clip in which she appealed why she is right person to be sent abroad.
She passed the selection and went to Canada in Summer 2017.
After returning from the trip, Nanoha engaged in the promotion of the program, delivering presentations that helped two students to successfully get selected the next year.
2017年4月に順天高校に入学するとすぐに、
取口さんは【文部科学省】トビタテ！留学JAPANという留学プログラムに応募しました。
彼女は厳しい選択を通過し、2017年夏にカナダに行きました。
留学から戻った後、取口さんはプログラムの推進に従事し、
2人の学生が翌年に選ばれるのに尽力しました。
In January 2018, Nanoha went to Brisbane to study for a year Cavendish Road State High School, where she was awarded the headmaster’s prize for efforts in fostering the international student community.
In the future, Nanoha aims to enter the field of education to shape the next generation of high school students and future leaders by reforming the Japanese education system.
2018年1月、七晴さんはブリスベンに1年間留学し、
キャベンディッシュロード州立高等学校で校長賞を受賞しました。
将来的には、日本の教育システムを改革することによって
次世代の高校生と将来のリーダーを形成するための教育の分野に参入することを目指しています。
After the awards ceremony, I spoke with Nanoha and her classmate, Ms. Nagisa Narita, a motivated girl passionate about being a social worker and addressing the inequities that children of a single mother face in Japan.
She herself is from a single mother family and conducts comparative studies on single-parent families between Japan and other countries such as the Philippines to raise awareness about this issue.
Both of them shared with me their experiences of going abroad and their future ambitions.
In turn, I also shared about the benefits of studying in the U.S. and living across various countries, encouraging them not to shy away from studying abroad and taking on new challenges.
授賞式の後、私は七晴さんと彼女の同級生、ソーシャルワーカーであること、
そしてシングルマザーの子供たちが日本で直面する不平等について
熱心に取り組んでいるもう一人の女性(成田渚さん)と話しました。
彼女自身はシングルマザーの家庭出身で、
日本とフィリピンなどの他の国との間で、
ひとり親家庭に関する比較研究を行って、
この問題についての意識を高めています。
二人とも、海外に行った経験と将来の夢について私と一笑に語り合いました。
また、米国で勉強したり、さまざまな国で暮らしたりすることで、
留学やその他の機会に恐れずに挑戦して下さいとお薦めました。

SAINT MAUR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL in Yokohama
横浜のサンモール・インタナショナルスクール
Saint Maur International School’s winner of the Harvard Book Prize was Karen Marina Sato, a dual U.S.-Japanese citizen, who is interested in studying Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry at university. Her dream is a future career in medicine or related research. As one of the top students and Secretary/Treasurer of her Grade 11 class, she leads a number of school activities, including Habitat for Humanity, for which she helps plan for students to visit Cambodia and build houses for displaced families.
Her personal goals for this year were to “be honest in all areas, give meaningful and helpful advice when asked, and deal with as little drama as possible.”
サンモール・インタナショナルスクールがHPBを受賞したのは、
日米の二国籍市民であるKaren Marina Satoさんです。
彼女は大学で生化学、神経科学、化学工学、
化学の勉強に興味を持っています。
彼女の夢は医学や関連研究の分野に進むことです。
Karenさんは11年生のトップクラスの生徒で、秘書/会計係として、
ハビタット・フォー・ヒューマニティーをはじめとする数多くの学校活動を指揮しています。
彼女の個人的な目標は、
「すべての分野で誠実であり、
求められたときに有意義で役立つアドバイスを提供し、
生活の中で起きる色んな問題に対し誠実に対象すること」でした。
MY SPEECH
私のスピーチ
At both ceremonies, I spoke to the student assembly for a few minutes to encourage them all to stay curious and continuously pursue new challenges and knowledge.
A copy of my speech is below:
両方の式典で、授賞式を締結するために、
私が在校生に向かって、
皆さんは好奇心を保ち、
新しい挑戦と知識を継続的に追求するように励ましの言葉をかけました。
スピーチは以下の通り：
Congratulations again. You should be very proud of yourself, not only for the Harvard Prize Book, but truly for all of your amazing achievements so far. I am sure you will continue to be very successful if you keep following your present direction.
To the rest of the students here today, I want to encourage all of you to follow the example of the HPB winner, but also to embark on your own journey and create your own story. Everyone has different experiences, and what works for one person may not have the same results for another.
To find your own path, you will need to follow your heart. You will have to step out of your comfort zone, even when you are not confident, to try new things and explore different ways of seeing the world.
Do not be afraid to take more challenges, as the journey and exposure will surely open your mind and provide you new adventures and opportunities. Never stop being curious and learning about anything and everything around you.
Living in Tokyo, a truly cosmopolitan city, you are very lucky to have access to so many resources that other people around the world do not. For example, people from all walks of life and all over the world gather here. Go out and meet more of them.
In fact, meet as many people as you can – you never know how the next person you meet could change your life – they could become a close friend, a mentor, a role model, someone you could learn from, or someone you could teach…
You will encounter many different things, many of which you will not like or realize is just not for you. That is perfectly fine! It is as important to find out what you do not like, as it is to find out what you do like.
To conclude, I would like to encourage all of you to challenge yourself to do something new every day. For example, speak to someone new every day, learn something new every day, or even something simple like watch a new show about a different country.
Remember, the only difference between an obstacle and an opportunity is our attitude towards it.
Every opportunity has an obstacle, and every obstacle has an opportunity.
It is up to you to create your own opportunities, your own luck, and your own version of a success story.
改めておめでとうございます。ハーバード・プライズ・ブックだけでなく、
今までのあなたの素晴らしい成果すべてを誇りに思ってください。
今の道を続けて進めばさらに素晴らしい成果が得られるでしょう。
ここにいるすべての生徒の皆さん。
HPB勝者の例に倣って進んでほしいと思いますが、それだけでなく、
ぜひ、自分自身の物語を作る旅に出発してほしいと願っています。
みんなが違う経験を持っているのですから、
ある人を成功に導いた行動がほかの人に当てはまるとは限らないのです。
自分の道を見つけるためには、
あなた自身の心に従う必要があります。
心地よい日常から抜け出して、
たとえ自信がなくても、新しいことを試し、
世界を別の見方でみる方法を開発しなくてはなりません。
挑戦することを恐れてはなりません。
旅立ちや出会いは必ずやあなたの心を開き、
新しい冒険や素晴らしい機会をもたらすでしょうから。
好奇心を持ち続けましょう。
あなたの周りのすべてのことを学びの機会としましょう。
東京は国際都市です。
世界のどこともつながっているあなた方の環境はめったに得られないものです。
あらゆる種類の人生を歩く人が世界中から東京に集まっています。
外に出なさい。
そして、もっと多くの人にお会いなさい。
とにかく会えるだけたくさんの人に出会いましょう。
次に会う人があなたの人生を変えるかもしれませんよ。
親友になるかもしれないし、恩師かも、
お手本とすべき人かも、
学ぶべきことがある人かも、
ひょっとしたらあなたの生徒になる人かもしれません。
皆さんはこれからいろいろなことに遭遇すると思います。
いやなことや気にも留めないことの多くは、
そもそもあなた向きの事柄ではないのでしょう。
それで構わないのです。
好きでないことを発見するのは、
好きなことを発見することと同じだけ重要なのです。
失敗というのは、恐れたりするようなものではありません。
危険を何も冒さないということではなく、
誤りから学ぶということこそが、
学習し成長するに最も適した方法なのですから。
最後に、あなたたちすべてに、
毎日ひとつ何か新しいことに挑戦することをお勧めします。
例えば、毎日一人まだ話したことのない人と話してみるとか、
毎日ひとつ何か新しいことを学ぶとか、
もっと簡単に毎日違った国に関係があるテレビ番組やビデオを見るとか。
大切なこと、それは、障害と機会の違いは、
あなたのそれに向かう姿勢だけであるということです。
どんな機会にも障害があり、
どんな障害も機会となりうるのです。
それを決めるのはあなた。
機会を作り出し、
幸運を呼び寄せ、
あなた自身のサクセスストーリーを語るのはあなたです。

最後の一言
It is amazing what students such as Nanoha and Karen have already achieved at such a young age, and we truly do have to look to them for inspiration on how to shape the world into a better place.
I believe it is so important to teach the next generation of youth that they are responsible for their own lives and have the power of free choice.
I constantly reflect upon my own route and about the students I meet to think about how to create different pathways for them.
My personal goal is to let all of them know there’s always a multitude of ways to achieve success and benefit others.
I sincerely hope that these passionate, ambitious young ladies go forth into their bright future with confidence and the knowledge that they are empowered with choosing how to lead their lives.
七晴さんやKarenさんのような学生が若いうちに、この様な考えを持ち、
すでに実践していることは驚くべきことであります。
私たちは未来の世界をより良い場所に形づくるために彼ら達の考えを聞いて、
私達かよりインスパイアされるために、
彼らに注目するべきだと思います。
次世代の若者に自分たちの生活に責任を持ち、
自由な選択の力を持つことを教えることが非常に重要であると私は思います。
私は常に自分自身の人生と、
私が出会う学生たちについて、
自分たちのためにこれから道どう生きるかについてよく考えてほしいと思います。
私の個人的な目標は、成功を達成し、
他の人に利益をもたらすための方法が常に多数あることを、
全員に知らせさせたいことです。
私は、これらの情熱的で自分の夢に向う若い女性が、
自信と自分たちの生活をどのように導いていくかを選択することで、
力を与えられるという知識をもって、
明るい未来に向かっていくことを心から望みます。
