Hug Elephant Sanctuary

Did you know?

“Elephant” in Thai is called “Chang” (ช้าง)! Hence, the famous Chang Beer is named after an elephant and has the animal as its mascot.
The elephants have been revered in Thailand for centuries and is the country’s national animal.
There were 100,000 elephants in 1850 but now there are only 2,700 domesticated elephants in Thailand and 95% percent of them are owned by the private sector. Only about 2,000-3,000 elephants remain in the wild.

Trekking with the Elephants

For about 2 hours, we trekked up the mountains to feed and play with the elephants.

The bag was filled with sugar cane and was very heavy, making it quite a trek!

Review of Hug Elephant Sanctuary

PRO

At Hug Elephant Sanctuary, I had the opportunity to meet and play with elephants in their natural habitat. It was my first time to feed and bathe these majestic animals.

It felt nice to support the welfare of elephants and livelihood of local Thai village people.

We received cute elephant souvenirs to take home at the end of the day.

***

CON

At times, I could not help feeling like we were paying to do the work of the elephant owners and caretakers (who followed us throughout the day and simply sat on the side and watched us)!

Additionally, the ride to and from the sanctuary was extremely bumpy and we were not warned that we would travel the entire way (about 1.5 hours) from the hotel by TRUCK.

*~*~*~*

Overall, however, it was a great experience, and a fulfilling day! Definitely a worthwhile trip.
