As we enter the heart of December, many of us will naturally both reflect on what has come before – and plan for the year to come. It is always hard to believe whenever we approach the end of a year, but the end of 2021 feels particularly sudden. Looking back on this year, it is not surprising to understand why. The story was all about COVID, staying home, vaccinations, and social distancing. It seems crazy to think that we are almost approaching the SECOND year of the descent of COVID on the world. This virus has changed our lives in ways we never thought would have been possible.

Against this bleak backdrop, however, there has been hope and resilience. We gained strength from the stories of community spirit and individuals realizing their entrepreneurial potential. The widespread adoption of flexible work and normalization of mental health struggles changed many lives for the better.

Even so, the global battle against the coronavirus still wages on.

In Japan, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games brought much excitement to many in the country and around the world with medal wins and new world records.

Despite the political controversies, Tokyo 2020 made history by being the first time the Games have been held behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency in the Greater Tokyo Area.

During a time when the need for tenacity has never been more important amid the ongoing pandemic, who better to speak on this subject of resilience and resolve in the face of gruelling hardships and unexpected obstacles than world-class top athletes?

Elite athletes have to constantly overcome setbacks in their careers. Through the process of battling numerous challenges to reach their goal, these athletes confront difficult paths and contemplate every option with dedication, passion, and resilience to make the best choice and emerge a winner. In particular, resilience not only reflects an ability to “bounce back” from going up against a crisis or setback, but also the skill to adapt to abrupt and potentially long-lasting changes.

He has been among the world elite since the 2001 World Championships, where he won the silver medal. During the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, he became the first athlete from Japan to win at the event, was crowned world champion in 2011, and went on to win a bronze medal at London 2012 at the age of 37. Koji served as the Sports Director of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and most recently has been appointed commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency (JSA). He also actively supports younger athletes in his role as a professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

Murofushi’s Tip #1: Be focused to achieve mastery. But, understand the importance of taking breaks.

Murofushi-san’s motto of “One Throw, One Intention” (ittou ichinen 一投一念) represents his belief that it is important to put your spirit into each task and focus to make the best effort. Murofushi-san emphasizes that he follows this guiding principle in everything he does, not only while he is competing. The best thing to do, he says, is to learn from your reflection and by watching yourself. For example, in the most literal sense, by taking a video of yourself performing. What you see is almost always very different from what you imagine yourself to be, and by practicing, rehearsing, getting feedback from others, and also critically examining yourself, you can achieve much greater results in a more focussed manner.

As much as it is important to be dedicated, Murofushi-san also stresses the importance of knowing when to take a step back. Often, it is only by taking a break from an objective and doing something else completely different, that you can return to it refreshed and with a different perspective to push yourself to the next level. In Murofushi-san’s experience, he was almost 38 when he won the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics, and in the previous year captured gold at the World Championships. He continued to actively compete until he was 41.

However, hammer throw involves throwing a 7.26kg (for men) metal ball attached to a wire and spinning three or four times before releasing the ball. While being spun and thrown, the force on the wire can reach more than 350kg! As the physical abilities critical for successful hammer throwing decline with age, it was certainly not easy to accomplish what Murofushi-san did at his age. He shared with me that when he was competing, his hands were often so swollen from throwing that even his wedding ring would not fit!

To achieve these results, Koji contributes his success to the fact that he took a year off after participating in each Olympic Games. Although he had anxiety about not competing for a prolonged period, the effects of long years of continuous hammer throwing had taken a toll on his body, and he needed to take a long break. He reflects that it was important for him to experience something other than hammer throwing and to recover from the repetitive physical and mental strain. These breaks were precisely what he needed to come back to hammer throwing with a fresh perspective and renewed strength, helping him break new world records.

Although the lockdowns and covid-era “new normal” have been difficult for many of us, perhaps it is a blessing in disguise. So many of us are caught up in the hamster wheel of everyday routines and focussed on our work and obligations, that it is hard for us to grind to a halt and take a break. However, the coronavirus pandemic has forced many of us to do just that. Resilience means more than just ‘bouncing back’ because if one attempts to ‘bounce back’ without taking time to recover and rest from each effort, the likelihood of burnout is high. We may find that our performance will surprisingly improve after an extended time away if we can change our view.

Although it is noble to specialize and master a discipline, one risks becoming too narrow-minded by fixating only on a single skill set. Murofushi-san’s life and career revolve around the hammer throw, but he stresses the importance of taking on many different challenges and gaining diverse experiences to strengthen resilience.

For Murofushi-san, the challenges that he immersed himself in outside of hammer throwing inspired him to discover and develop new training methods, helping him take his career to the next level and push through barriers. His never-ending quest to learn more, improve, and reach for the next challenge has led him to acquire a doctorate in graduate school and opened up the chance for him to become a university professor. To the younger generation and especially other athletes, he advises that it is never too early to be trying something new, as you never know where that new pursuit will take you.

The current uncertain environment reminds us that we must make the best use of our time by getting creative to expand our options. Who knows when taking that new class, learning a different skill, and trying out various opportunities may lead to life-changing discoveries? At the very least, diversifying your experiences and knowledge will allow you to be more resilient by opening new doors when others close. Even if we think we have found our strengths and specialty, nobody knows what will happen ten or maybe twenty years from now. The world can unpredictably change upside down as it has recently, or maybe our personal situations will drastically change. Years from now, it is always better to have more options to choose from instead of having only one (that may very well become obsolete). However, it takes time to maximize your potential. Even when you do not know which path to take, it is best to take on more challenges whenever you have the chance to broaden your future choices.

When Hakuho seized a record-extending 44th top-level championship after outlasting fellow yokozuna Kakuryu at the 2020 Spring Grand Sumo Tournament, the 35-year-old credited his mental strength: “I was able to regain calmness and I think I was able to move very nimbly.”

Sumo wrestling has its origin in the Shinto religions and all ceremonies in the sport are related to purification. With over 2000 years of history, sumo has at its heart principles of dignity and courtesy. It is not only considered to be Japan’s national sport, but more importantly, it is also a religious ritual. All religious symbols, myths, and ceremonies associated with sumo purportedly have an inner, psychological meaning related to the awakening of the Higher Self in man.

Perhaps it is unsurprising that Hakuho, legendary record-breaking grand champion, stresses the importance of the right mindset to set apart ‘great’ from ‘the greatest.’

Hakuho tells me that in sumo, it is all about respect. Although Sumo wrestlers, called Rikishi, may look big and cumbrous, winning fights involves a sleek combination of strength, agility, speed, craft, technical skill, and flair. Each bout may only last a few seconds, but much preparation and concentration are required leading up to that moment in the ring.

For Hakuho, everything that sumo does in life outside the ring is ultimately reflected inside the ring. If you live a life without being clear about what, why, and how you plan to achieve, this will all be reflected in the moments you need that focus the most to perform – whether that will be to compete in a ring or to deliver a dazzling business presentation. Having a plan – a process – and the correct mindset to execute it is important. Never forget that you are the one who should take control and responsibility for your own actions and life.

You can learn valuable lessons from difficult experiences in life. Whether it is the ongoing pandemic and its ensuing economic or social impacts, being able to cope with the physical and mental pain of such situations allows you to gain strength from these experiences. You can take these lessons into other challenging situations you encounter, to remind you that you can cope with adversity when required to.

Japan is well known as a collectivist society, where complex cultural schemes have been developed for people to get along and maintain balance within society. In sports, such collectivism is evident when individuals are sometimes sacrificed for the team and the team requires the individuals to sacrifice themselves to win the championship. Although sumo may seem a very individualistic sport with only one wrestler in the ring against an opponent, it has very social roots as a traditional Japanese sport.

To train to become a successful Sumo wrestler involves huge personal sacrifice, with young hopefuls joining a stable (heya) as young teenagers and living and sleeping there, training 7 days a week and carrying out all tasks involved in running the stable, including the cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping until they begin to rise the ranks.

Moreover, Sumo wrestlers prioritize respect and compassion for their opponent and fellow sumo – at the end of every match, they do not tease the other wrestler for losing, and will always bow to express their gratitude regardless of the outcome.

Hakuho knows better than anyone else what he needs to win in a competition. However, he often credits his father, an Olympian who held the highest ranking in Mongolian wrestling, as the reason he was able to continue to persist and push through the gruelling training.

Although Hakuho has expressed a desire to remain active and has already begun scouting young wrestlers to join the Miyagino stable, which he currently belongs to. He plans to take them with him after his retirement when he becomes an independent stable master (oyakata), thereby continuing to give back to the sumo world by training the next generation of wrestlers.

After meeting with Hakuho, I was reminded of my visit to the Musashigawa stable, run by oyakata (stable master) Musahigawa Mitsuhide, former yokozuna Musashimaru. Watching the young wrestlers train during their morning practice, you get the sense that the stable is much more than simply training quarters, but truly represents an important place of community, collaboration, symbiosis, and team spirit. The wrestlers intimately understand the need to work together and help each other to reach their goals, whether it is to keep the stable running smoothly or to achieve their next milestone.

In the world of sumo, a yokozuna is considered a presence existing in a higher realm for whom true value can only be brought out through winning a tournament. However, as Hakuho reminds us, success in the sumo ring can only happen with the support of many others both in and outside the ring, from fellow wrestlers to the audience, to the teachers and doctors that tend to wrestlers.

We often make comparisons between ourselves and others. When going through a difficult time, this tendency is usually exacerbated. Why is someone else doing ‘better’? Why are they able to do certain things while you are stuck doing something else? In these overwhelming situations, it is important to acknowledge that what someone else has achieved in life may not be right for you.

Focus on yourself and your performance as that is all you can really control. Nonetheless, do not underestimate the importance of seeking out, being grateful for, and giving back to others where possible. After all, humans are naturally social and community-based beings. Anyone’s success and wellbeing are intricately connected to the happiness and support of others. Nothing is ever achieved in isolation. And, perhaps the secret to it all is, you may be surprised by what you can achieve by giving wholeheartedly to benefit others!

Focus on yourself and your performance as that is all you can really control. Nonetheless, do not underestimate the importance of seeking out, being grateful for, and giving back to others where possible.

Many in Japan know of Tamesue-san as a star sprinter, but few know about his beginnings as an athlete. He tells me that he was not always an athlete – in fact, his first after school club as a child was a reading club, and not related to running at all!

However, when he discovered he had a knack for the track, he decided to pursue the training. Tamesue-san shares his belief that the most important trait to become a successful athlete is not any physical attributes per se, but to be a “thinker.” He constantly analyses himself objectively to identify his strengths and weaknesses and separates what he can versus cannot improve to focus only on what he can change. Although coaches will always push their athletes to go further, Tamesue-san advises, only you can decide what you need to transform.

Although Tamesue-san has enjoyed running fast since he was young, it was not until he was 18 that he found his niche in hurdles. This change happened when he realized he could not be the fastest in pure sprinting, but felt he could excel in hurdling instead. He did not have a coach when he was young, but was inspired by Mr. Susumu Takano, Japan’s 1st Olympic medal sprinter, and was extremely self-motivated to constantly improve. Tamesue-san would devotedly take videos and observe himself running and training, and emphasizes that this process is of the utmost importance to understanding one’s strengths and improving.

We often hear about the importance of understanding your strengths and weaknesses to help you focus on and make the optimal life and career decisions. However, in real life, we can easily become complacent in our comfort zones and familiar routines. It is so important to regularly re-evaluate ourselves and circumstances to identify new areas where we can improve. You may find that an “optimal” situation just a few months ago, now requires change. Such realizations may have been made clear by the recent pandemic – what might have been an acceptable situation “pre-COVID,” could now be less than ideal in a “post-COVID” environment.

For example, according to Tamesue-san, with the pandemic and lockdowns, athletes all over the world were forced to disrupt their usual training schedule and adapt to new programs while staying home. Yet, many athletes managed to achieve their personal best after the stay-home period. This appears to indicate that many training programs need to be changed to determine what is necessary and effective, and what should be reformed. Ultimately, you could be anyone if you put in the time. The key, however, is not only to work hard but also to work smart by constantly analyzing your strengths and weaknesses objectively to find the best way to achieve your top performance.

Ultimately, you could be anyone if you put in the time.

In his book, Zen and Hurdles, Tamesue-san addresses the Zen mind, an understanding of the fundamental way of being, that he has acquired through his experience of accomplishing the epitome of success in the world of professional athletics. Tamesue-san credits the Zen mind in guiding him in a profession characterized by a single-minded focus on winning and extreme ups and downs.

Like our good days, bad days are inevitable. Tamesue-san emphasizes that to be successful and happy, it is necessary to aim for constant self-development to increase your options for the future. However, in the end, the most important thing is to find what makes you happy, and what feels right to you.

To find this, one needs the courage to be imperfect and have a positive outlook to search for your niche by being open to new experiences, new ways of doing things. Tamesue-san advises that you should try not to be afraid of new activities or new routes to achieve your life goals.

In his own life and career, Tamesue-san has not hesitated to dream big and venture into many different activities outside of athletics, even if they may not all work out as he initially expected. He was an advisor to Xiborg, a company with the mission to develop an artificial limb that can expand and contract with movement, making it more natural and less tiring to move. This invention would not only be important for athletes, but for all people who have a disability.

Moving forward, Tamesue-san’s dream is to build a school that will enable more children to receive professional-level track training. Adapting from the coronavirus pandemic, Tamesue-san plans to include more use of AI tracking and analysis as well as digital platforms such as video and conference tools to reach and train aspiring athletes all over Asia.

We all need to form our own path against resistance. Confidence and heart are perhaps the most valuable to support you on this journey. Anything is possible when you put time, effort, and belief of self into it. However, I do honestly believe that if you’re not having fun in the process, you’re not doing it right. Do what makes you happy, what feels right to you, because ultimately, it is your life and you have to live with the decisions made. Opposition is also inevitable – often the greater dreams you have, the stauncher the opposition – but know that without pressure, diamonds cannot form.

Do what makes you happy, what feels right to you, because ultimately, it is your life and you have to live with the decisions made. Opposition is also inevitable – often the greater dreams you have, the stauncher the opposition – but know that without pressure, diamonds cannot form.

When it comes down to it, though, if the pressure and stress are so great that you are simply not enjoying it anymore, it is a key indication that change is needed. While it is important to have grit and push through difficult times, if you do not feel there is any improvement even after 3-5 years, the chance of burnout is high and it may be time to make an important change. Having the flexibility of mindset to listen to your heart telling you what is right is essential to living a successful and happy life. When an opportunity is presented to you, take it seriously, believe in your preparation, and give it everything you’ve got. But it is even more important to have the self-awareness and courage to know when it is not right for you, and that you need to move on. Master this ability, and one day you may also be a champion.

Last Thoughts

It has been a while since I have had quiet time to reflect and write. It has been a difficult but exciting year as I had many opportunities to try challenging new projects and initiatives (more on that soon!). I have always been a fan of “diving into the deep end” – my personal preference is to approach new challenges by completely immersing myself in them to achieve the fastest learning curve in the shortest amount of time.

In this blog post, I hoped to share some of the lessons I have learned from those I have met along the way.

When we pay heed to the words spoken by top athletes and the journey they have endured, we find many hints that may help us all lead better lives. Their reflections and advice are also full of hints that could help us live through and emerge stronger from these difficult times brought on by the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak.

Looking back on the challenges that 2021 has thrown at us, it is amazing what so many people have been able to overcome and achieve. Sometimes, we do not even realize what we are truly capable of until we are forced to move out of our comfort zone by being thrown into new waters. More often than not, we emerge stronger from discovering something new and gaining confidence in an ability we may not have realized before. Having the right mindset is key to turning negatives into positives.

As 2021 comes to a close, what have been some of your key takeaways or insights from recent experiences? I would love to hear from you.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Recently, I participated in the Dear Harvard project, where alumni write a virtual postcard to connect with the Harvard community to “share a piece of yourself, contribute to an enduring artifact of this time, and bridge our current virtual worlds with the future.”

The process of writing a postcard to the community that was to be “printed and exhibited physically when we come back together” made me ponder how we are now living an epochal period.

As much as I have been trying to be socially responsible and stay at home for days at a time, it is hard to deny the stress that such an enforced lifestyle can have. I found myself dedicating more time to explore within, as it was not possible to explore the world outside.

At first it was pretty good – I felt I could be a lot more productive in managing my time flexibly throughout the days (and nights). However, just about a week ago, I confess that I woke up one morning and just felt very confined and anxious. The reality of being unsure how to align my daily life and goals with an uncertain “post-COVID” future had hit me all at once.

Even after the danger of the disease dissipates and we have some form of normalcy back in our everyday lives, there will not be a “post-COVID world” – not really. It seems now more and more likely that the novel coronavirus will not just simply disappear (unlike SARS in the past). Until a vaccine or other cure is developed, we will have to learn to co-exist “with” the virus, and not “after” it.

In this article, I wish to share my Dear Harvard postcard, as well as some reflections and hopes for what we will remember when the history of the Coronavirus Epoch is written.

My Postcard Message:
Dear Members of the Harvard Community,
This crisis has shown us how interconnected and interdependent we are in our daily lives, more so than many would have realized or believed. Let us not forget this experience, and recognize how important in-person interactions and connections truly are, despite amazing advances in digital technology. I hope that we will all remember and appreciate the acts of kindness we have witnessed and heard of. Wishing hope and health to all.

We have most likely reached the end of “normal life” as we knew it before COVID-19 unleashed its wrath on the world. Perhaps even the end of an era.

The defining characteristic of the Coronavirus Epoch is distance. Regardless of the different issues that each of us has to confront, whether medical, financial, or psychological/mental, we all struggle with the tangible impact of separation, isolation, and distance in our lives.

No doubt being separated from friends, family, and colleagues, and having our usual lives and normal social structures completely disrupted can be distressing in many ways. However, I believe that social distancing and self-isolation has allowed us to engage in something rare and special: stillness and reflection.

In being distanced from others (and in some sense, also from my usual self), I have found the extra time and space to reflect. In the past few years, I have navigated moving to and living in several countries, diving headfirst into new cultures and communities across Singapore, China, the U.S., Korea, and Japan. Even under “normal” circumstances, my family is spread across multiple continents, with my parents in Singapore, brother in the UK, and extended family scattered elsewhere around the world. Now that I am physically separated from my friends in the same city (Tokyo, at this time), I have found myself questioning – who do I consider friends, regardless of where they are in the world? What kind of relationship do we have and how can I improve it? How have I neglected my family, mentors, or friends and how can I better (re)connect with them? (As part of this thought exercise, I wrote a letter to my mother for her birthday.)

“Love in the Time of COVID”: A Letter to My Mother 「

Submerged under all the noise and activities of our hectic city lifestyles, there are an infinite number of ways we fail to recognize and understand ourselves and our actions. One of the key concepts of social psychology is that our social interactions help form our self-concept and perceptions. What does it mean, however, when these interactions no longer happen in-person, but are rather mediated through online screens or robots and other devices? How do people come to know and understand themselves in a digital world, and how will these self-perceptions then affect our social interactions?

Now that our world is undergoing seismic shifts, it is so important for us to take a moment to re-evaluate our lives. What is working and what is not? What do we need to develop and what is being neglected? What matters to me and how will I protect it? How can we better understand our inner life (self-awareness, self-esteem, self-expression) and how it influences our social experience?

The coronavirus outbreak has given us a chance for a wide-reaching self-reflection exercise on what we value and how to enhance it, away from all the distractions that normally keep our minds occupied.

At the end of the day, despite the widespread fear of contagion and panic from lockdowns, the coronavirus epoch has nonetheless brought out heart-warming stories of human compassion and empathy amid the shut-in-relentless-teleconference-online-meeting routine and malaise.

When the history of the Coronavirus Epoch is written, I hope that we will remember:

How the human need to flourish and find happiness when connected in close, supportive relationships have been brought to the forefront of our daily lives. I hope that more people will value off-screen time, spend less time on phones at the table, and make a point to put aside smartphones and computers to interact face to face when we can come together again.

That we can effectively work from home and add value. One possible silver lining to the current crisis may be that the pandemic will prompt necessary work-style reform, with more companies allowing flexible hours and telework options. I hope that even traditional industries will no longer see people who work from home as “slacking off” or “not doing real work,” and provide more opportunities for those who may not be able to physically commute to the office for fixed hours.

That the coronavirus world has changed how millions around the world are educated. We will hopefully see much-needed innovation and new approaches in education that provide solutions to address the digital divide. I hope that we will take more time to appreciate the meaningful work of teachers and educators, who have worked tirelessly for their students and peers during this difficult time.

The selflessness of healthcare and medical workers at the frontlines risking their own lives every day to tend to the sick and strangers in need.

That we should pay more attention to the hazards of pollution and be kinder to the environment. Although shutdowns have caused grave damage to the economy, one positive outcome is that it has allowed precious time for the world to heal.

Most importantly, I hope that we will remember and hold to heart the reality of how we have managed to adapt to the unknown and unexpected. Of course there have been many bumps along the way, but we now have the lived experience of how the world has managed to be flexible and resilient even under harsh circumstances. The shared experience of the coronavirus pandemic has helped us appreciate our common humanity, bringing communities closer together. Moving forward, I hope that we will remember that we can emerge from whatever curveballs life and nature throws at us stronger and more prepared.

What are your thoughts and reflections during these past few months of the coronavirus outbreak? How have they changed your hopes for the ever-unfolding future? I would love to hear from you.

Over a month ago, I was invited by the Singapore Global Network to a small group, closed-door Zoom gathering to speak with Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State (SMS), Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI).

Representing Japan, I was asked to speak about my activities to support the local community of overseas Singaporeans with my action and research on “How to Get Tested for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Tokyo.” I was also able to share on some recent efforts to support a therapeutics company developing a vaccine for COVID-19 in collaboration with Singapore’s Duke-NUS Medical School through my work on the healthcare investments team at a Japanese private equity fund.

About 10 other participants from all over the world also shared about their initiatives. It was incredibly uplifting to hear what other Singaporeans have been able to achieve in their respective countries of residence.

What is it like to be an overseas Singaporean in the 21st century and during the coronavirus outbreak?
What communication channels do the Singapore diaspora have with our home country and the Government of Singapore?
In this post, I wish to share my personal story.

The Singapore diaspora consists of about 250,000 Singaporeans living overseas, with Australia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom having the largest communities. According to the Embassy of Singapore in Tokyo, about 3000 Singaporeans are living in Japan (as of 2019).

When the topic of the Singapore diaspora came up in the conversation with Dr. Janil Puthucheary, I could not help but reflect that my life intimately represents this community in many ways. For as long as I can remember, my life has been established upon multicultural hybridity and movement. I am a half-Cantonese, half-Teochew Singaporean woman (with Peranakan ancestry to boot!) who was raised in Shanghai but attended an international high school; my childhood classmates named me the “Nanyang Girl” – too foreign for some, yet too Asian for others. I have spent more years outside of Singapore than in our island state, living across China, the U.S., Europe, South Korea, and now Japan. Interactions with people from clearer heritages around the world have made me keenly aware of my ambiguous roots.

Looking back, perhaps the only constant way to describe me has been through my relationship with the liminal “other.” When asked about my upbringing, I often found myself filtering my experiences to appear more comprehensible. And yet, I never hesitate in answering when people ask me, “Where are you really from?”

There has never been a doubt in my heart that I am a Singaporean.

This learned empathy with representations of “otherness” in the stories of fringe communities that I encounter has been a key theme throughout my life (the exploration of ethnic and social identity is evident in most of my writings and publications). What drew me to these issues was the desire to better understand the distinct languages, cultures, and identities subjected to transnational flows. I now realize that my personal migratory experiences give me a nuanced, but inextricable, perspective on the multiple meanings of diasporic sojourn vis-à-vis my Singaporean origin. I also find myself particularly sensitive to the needs of the disadvantaged or minorities that others may overlook.

As chronicled in my interview with The Straits Times on “Home, truly: The place that nurtured me for abroad,” I believe that Singapore’s multi-cultural society has prepared me to thrive abroad. Hence, I am constantly looking for ways to turn my experiences abroad into something positive for Singapore society.

The Straits Timesというシンガポール新聞での「Home, truly: The place that nurtured me for abroad」

Interview with The Straits Times:
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/home-truly-the-place-that-nurtured-me-for-abroad

This motivation drove me to take action during the 2020 coronavirus outbreak. In Tokyo during the pandemic, I soon observed that there was a great discrepancy with how the outbreak was handled across national borders. Although many Singaporeans decided to go home to Singapore to wait out the pandemic, a significant number decided to stay in Japan for a variety of reasons.

Japan’s bureaucracy can be daunting to navigate, especially for non-Japanese speakers. Moreover, there was a lot of conflicting and confusing information put out about how one could receive hospital treatment or a PCR test for the coronavirus during the early days of the outbreak in Japan. It concerned me that for people who were sick or those who may not have the time or language skills to navigate the coronavirus testing application process (e.g.: many resources such as the health centres were often engaged, and only provided services in Japanese), not having access to critical information would be extremely stressful.

To address this issue, I decided to investigate more about the process. After hundreds of phone calls to coronavirus-related hotlines and health centers to find out information over several days, I wrote about what I learned in the article, “How to Get Tested for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Tokyo.” My goal was to hopefully help others save time and relieve anxiety when figuring out what to do if they should feel a need to get tested.

情報を得た後、記事で「How to Get Tested for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Tokyo」

Being able to share my experience in Tokyo with SMS Dr. Janil was meaningful, but what was even more inspiring was the opportunity to hear from and speak with other Singaporeans leading their communities during these times of crisis.

It was amazing to hear how fellow Singaporeans have been rallying and helping the overseas Singaporean community across Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, the U.K., and the U.S. On top of managing their own personal and family situations during the crisis, many contributed to their local communities by organizing the distribution of PPE, establishing online business directories, and launching online events to support meaningful social connections and promote mental health. Being able to connect with each other in this way was rewarding, as it brought us together and helped us recognize that we are not alone in this crisis, never mind that we may have never met in person before.

Straddling multiple countries and cultures, it is easy for diasporic communities and individuals to feel alone in the world, forgotten within the margins. As an overseas Singaporean, I am very grateful to the Government of Singapore for inspiring renewed confidence in our nation’s leaders and reassuring all citizens that we would always have a home to return to. Even for those who may not be able to return to Singapore in the short-term (such as myself), it is comforting to know that we will always be welcomed in our home country and can receive crucial healthcare treatment if necessary.

I believe that Singapore embassies around the world have also done a great job in reaching out to support overseas Singaporean communities. The Embassy of Singapore in Tokyo has been sending frequent email updates on the ever-changing policy and regulatory environment as well as localized alerts to inform the overseas Singaporean community in Japan on the latest developments.

SGN has certainly stepped up to fill the gap to connect overseas Singaporeans back to our home country in a way that effectively complements the efforts of locally-based embassies. Through thoughtful initiatives such as “Love in the time of COVID” collecting love letters from the overseas community to their loved ones in Singapore, we can share our experiences and feel welcomed as part of one unified Singapore network, despite being scattered all across the world.

I am grateful to SGN for providing a platform where I, along with other overseas Singaporeans, could voice our experiences in a foreign country separated from our loved ones during these unprecedented times. Rather than simply being presented as a statistic of the overseas community and perceived as being “less involved with Singapore,” we could anchor our personal stories in relation to our country of citizenship.

Although many of us in the Singaporean diaspora have made our homes – whether temporarily or permanently – in our host countries, our heart and true home will remain in Singapore. Many stories of overseas Singaporeans have been highlighted over the years, but I find that there still tends to be little attention given to historicizing each life and accomplishment. Stories of overseas Singaporeans need to be framed more as a community, rather than a minority segment of the nation’s population.

Moving forward, I hope that SGN will continue to reinforce their initiatives and expand their presence with the Singapore diaspora long after the coronavirus outbreak settles down. It would be ideal to build a wider network of community leaders amongst overseas Singaporeans, and thereby shape a stronger sense of cohesive identity and community locally. This will help foster resilience and a united spirit by bringing the Singapore diaspora together beyond outreach efforts during an extraordinary crisis period.

I truly believe that one of the most important things anyone can do is to let others know that they are not alone.

As a diasporic individual, it is easy to feel helpless and small, disconnected from your home country and fellow citizens. Nevertheless, it is important not to underestimate the difference each individual can make in the lives of others. Having a network where we can turn to for support from other Singaporeans and be empowered to step forward, reach out and help each other will be important. With this approach, we can seize opportunities and embrace digitalisation in a post-COVID world with confidence together.

I look forward to contributing to these efforts in the near future.

So what do you think? Who do I look most similar to (if any at all)?

Do you have your own doppelgangers?

About the Harvard Prize Book

Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. Harvard Prize Books are presented annually in nearly 2,000 high schools around the world. In Japan, about 20 schools participate in the program. Prize Books are an important way for Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs)　to help attract the attention of talented young students to the opportunities at Harvard College and studying liberal arts.

Junten High School has been awarding Harvard Prize Books annually since 2014. This year, there were many contenders for the Prize. The final winner selected was Mr. Takeru Ohmura　(大村武尊), who has demonstrated great persistence and determination in pursuing his passion for studying hospitality.

Mr. Takeru Ohmura　(大村武尊) is the Winner of Harvard Prize Book 2017 at Junten High School

Congratulations Mr. Takeru Ohmura for his excellent achievement! It was an honor to present him with the Harvard Prize Books and learn about all of his ambitions. At such a young age, Mr. Omura has already had the experience of studying hospitality over his summer breaks in the UK and Switzerland. Although he had applied for the prestigious Tobitate Japan study abroad program sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), he was regrettably not accepted. However, rather than letting this outcome discourage him, Mr. Omura managed to turn the experience around by being even more motivated to pursue self-study and achieve the same exposure. I truly wish him all the best and that he can achieve his dream of studying hospitality management at the Glion Institute of Higher Education.

To conclude the Harvard Prize Book Award Ceremony, I addressed the high school student body and gave a short speech sharing my views on the importance of being globally minded and how a liberal arts education can provide important and life-changing opportunities. (I have also spoken and written on this in a previous blog post on “The Appeal of Liberal Arts リベラルアーツの魅力”) I hope that more students will be encouraged to go abroad and widen their horizons.

Harvard Prize Book

After the Award Ceremony, I also had a discussion session with the winner and two runner-ups for the Harvard Prize Book. The other top contenders for the prize included a girl who studied abroad in Australia and is keen on pursuing politics and diplomacy, as well as another boy who discovered his passion for literature and writing after spending time living abroad. We spoke about their dreams and aspirations, and I once again emphasized the importance of a global education and encouraged them to actively learn and pursue their goals.

Related, I was honored to be interviewed and featured by the Overseas Singaporean Unit on their official media in an article on “Giving Back Through Mentorship” and “Contributing from Afar: Rachel Leng”! The OSU in the Prime Minister’s Office is part of the Government of Singapore’s efforts to engage its citizens overseas (under the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth).

rachel_leng_osu_Giving Back Through MentorshipDownload

To date, I have mentored students and young professionals in China, Japan, South Korea and the United States (U.S.) in areas ranging from leadership to global careers.

For me, mentoring is a way for me to come full circle, from starting out as a college student at Duke University, to my various appointments around the globe. Such experiences have given me unique insight into how my life has been shaped by them.

As I reflected on my own experiences, I became increasingly passionate about ‘paying it forward’ as a mentor. It can be difficult for anyone to build experience and enhance their potential without knowing about available opportunities or how to access them. Mentoring is therefore an effective way to offer opportunities, information, insight and resources to others who could benefit from them. I hope to continue and improve on this for years to come!
