Gokayama, located in Nanto City, is a rich, emerald oasis where locals honour the slow way of living. Here, enchanting villages with ancient grass-roof houses are scattered among the vibrant mountains of the Toyama region, which lies around 350km from the metropolis of Tokyo.

Together with SeiRogai, I ventured there to film the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour, to lift the veil on some of the unspoilt jewels of real and rugged Japan, far from the trodden tourist trails of the capital.

Launched on Global Virtual Travel, the video allows you to float like a bird among the mist-draped mountains. You can almost taste the crisp, alpine air, hear the trickle of a stream and watch as an ancient world falls into place around you.

Follow my exact itinerary to uncover the hidden treasures of this fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site…

Gokayama, located in Nanto City, is a region nestled within the pristine mountains of Toyama.

Forming part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the enchanting villages of Suganuma and Ainokura are rich with stories, begging to be told. Yet the region remains relatively under the radar, offering the ultimate antidote to the tumult of everyday life.

Our journey began in Suganuma, where low-lying clouds part to reveal a tiny village of thatched-roof buildings, enveloped in vibrant storybook scenery.

These gassho-zukuri houses, as they are known, are hundreds of years old. As we strolled through the village, a local lady explained how the roof of each one is pitched at approximately 60 degrees to protect against the heavy snow of winter. The style is said to resemble two hands joined together.

After escaping from the overstimulation of the city, it was glorious to get lost in the tranquil atmosphere of an ancient settlement, lost in time. If it’s your first time visiting Gokayama, I recommend spending your first few moments doing just that.

Next up, stop by the traditional Tenohira coffee shop, before exploring more soul-soothing natural landscapes surrounding the village, from rich rice fields to forested hillsides, where the locals cut grass for use in the gassho-zukuri roofs.

After exploring the stunning scenery, the next step on the tour took us inside the Gorobei Restaurant, housed within a traditional gassho-zukuri building. This is a beautiful space to sit by the open fireplace and taste a delicious lunch set with Iwana-Yaki.

Here you can indulge in some of the world’s freshest fish reared by Nakashima Kucho himself. Each fish is caught from a nearby pond as soon as an order is made – in contrast to other restaurants in Nanto City, where the fish is bought from nearby farms.

The final shop I recommend in Suganama village is the quaint Arai souvenir shop and cafe, where you can pick up local, handcrafted products to take a piece of the village away with you. You’ll find everything from keyrings and traditional straw hats to local snacks and toys.

However, as I discovered while filming for the tour, one of the most precious gifts of visiting this region was meeting the people who have never known another home; and the moments with them that I’ve bottled up for safekeeping.

The next stop on our Gokayama tour was Ainokura, a neighbouring UNESCO village. As the sun rose over the grass-roof houses, we learnt of a centuries-old craft still practised in the village.

In this very special store, an innovative local artisan is demonstrating the incredible strength of paper made from natural fibres by crafting dolls, toys, and even a wedding dress – all made from washi.

The creative craftsman who owns the store is more than happy to show you the painstaking process and help you make your own piece of washi paper. This makes the perfect souvenir from a place where natural materials are still used for everything, and plastics are few and far between.

Ainokura literally means ‘Twin Rock cliffs’ – so take your time to stroll through the village and see if you can spot the far-off peaks.

Derived from the words ‘Ai’ which means pair and ‘kura’ which means rock cliffs, it’s clear that this whole village is inspired by its enchanting natural surroundings.

A journey to Gokayama is a chance to reset, recharge, and relax in beautiful, tranquil surroundings, from the twin peaks, cloaked in trees, to the terraced fields and winding riverways.

“Todos somos Calaveras.”

(“We are all skeletons.”)

Underneath all our manmade trappings, we are all the same.

Have you heard of the Day of the Dead (known as “Día de los Muertos” in Spanish)?

Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd. On this holiday, Mexicans remember and demonstrate love and respect for their deceased loved ones. Because of its importance as a defining aspect of Mexican culture, Day of the Dead festivities have been recognized as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008.

Though held around the same time and with a common theme of death, Day of the Dead is not a Mexican version of Halloween!! The two annual events differ greatly in traditions and atmosphere: whereas Halloween is a long dark night of ghostly mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over several days (and nights) of vibrant colors and life-affirming joy~!

The annual Day of the Dead festival was held the weekend I visited San Jose at the end of October! Read on to learn more about this special festival and my day in San Jose, California.

皆様、死者の日（ししゃのひ、スペイン語: Día de los Muertos、英語: Day of the Dead）を聞いたことがありますか？

Bienvenidos!

San Jose

At the festival, revelers sing and dance at a concert, don funky makeup and costumes, eat and drink, and make offerings to lost loved ones.

Unlike Japan’s Obon or China’s Hungry Ghost Festival, Day of the Dead is not a solemn occasion. In contrast, it is a vibrant, festive, and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed on. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate ancestral graves and spend time there. They also make elaborately decorated altars (called ofrendas) to welcome the spirits back. At the festival, many of these altars were set up in the trunks of cars and proudly put on display.

History

Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful and believed in celebrating death as a natural phase in life’s long continuum. During Día de Los Muertos, the dead temporarily returned to Earth as members of the community.

People also make elaborately decorated altars (called ofrendas) to welcome the spirits back. At the festival, many of these altars were set up in the trunks of cars and proudly put on display.

San Jose

The most famous symbol for the Day of the Dead is probably the Calavera Catrina!

You might have seen this doll around before, but do you know where it came from?

Literary Calaveras and the Calavera Catrina

Calavera means “skull” in Spanish, but during the late 18th and early 19th centuries the term was also used to describe short, humorous poems (often sarcastic tombstone epitaphs that poked fun at the living). These literary calaveras eventually became a popular part of Day of the Dead celebrations.

In the early 20th century, Mexican political cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada created an etching to accompany a literary Calavera – a personification of death in fancy French garb called the Calavera Garbancera. Posada’s striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face parodying a Mexican upper-class female has since become associated with the Día de Los Muertos celebrations, and today takes the prominent form of Catrina figures.

Day of the Dead is an extremely social (and noisy) holiday that takes over the streets. People of all ages have their faces artfully painted to resemble skulls, and they dress up in suits and fancy dresses to mimic the calavera Catrina, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Many revelers wear shells or other noise-making accessories to amp up the noise—possibly to excite the dead and bring them into the fun!

Artwork based on the theme for Day of the Dead. I just loved all the vibrant colors!

Hopefully, I can find myself in Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead in the near future! I have heard that Day of the Dead is even celebrated differently in various locations throughout Mexico. Festivities tend to be more colorful in the southern region, particularly in the states of Michoacan, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Sounds like so much fun!

To finish off the day, I visited the San Jose Museum of Art next to the festival grounds. Did you know that San Jose is well known for its thriving Vietnamese community? At the time of my visit, the art museum was featuring an exhibit by Vietnamese artist Dinh Q. Le.

By the way, how did everyone spend their Halloween?

Back in Tokyo, I rode on a Halloween Party bus with some friends! It was really fun to dress up and ride around the city. People take their costumes pretty seriously here! I felt rather underdressed, but had a lot of fun all the same!

Happy Halloween!

I have heard that baseball in Japan (called “yakyū,” combining the characters for “field” and “ball”) is one of the nation’s most popular sports and often an exhilarating experience. Hence, it has been on my bucket list to witness a live game. Recently had the chance to watch the 89th Intercity Baseball Tournament between SEGASammy (Tokyo) and Mitsui Heavy Industries (Kobe). As my colleagues and I were invited by SEGASammy, we joined the SEGASammy Rooters team.

For all sports fans out there, you will definitely want to watch a baseball game in Japan and experience this country’s original baseball culture! In this post, I will share some observations and tips for watching a Japanese baseball game.

When you enter the stadium, you will sit on a dedicated side for the team you are supporting – the same side as the team’s “ouendan” (a “cheering squad” of fans who yell, sing, wave banners, and bang away on drums while their team is at the plate). Each team has their own theme song and I have heard that some fans may even songs for individual players!

It was rather intimidating at first to sit next to the hardcore fans singing songs by heart, but the songs are actually pretty easy to follow along and it was super fun to get caught up in the excitement! Cheering at the baseball station in Japan often also involves lots of props such as balloons, flags, banners, and fans. The atmosphere at a baseball game is completely contrary to the stereotype of Japanese people being very reserved in public.

Entering the stadium, you will see so much variety of foods and bento boxes for sale! This is very different from the limited selection of hot dogs and peanuts at American baseball games. Unlike in the US, you are also permitted to bring your own food and drinks into the venue (although you will be expected to pour your drinks into plastic cups).

Had fried gyoza instead of a hotdog!

Another great feature of Japanese baseball are the “uriko” (often pretty young girls selling drinks and snacks) running about. You’ll see them walking around with large kegs strapped to their backs at every baseball game.

An interesting feature of Japanese baseball is that many corporations actually launch their own teams, even if their business has no real connection to sports. This seems to have many benefits including enlivening baseball as a sport in Japan, and is a very good marketing tool.

The opposing team’s stage and cheering squad on the other side of the stadium.

Although SEGASammy lost, it was a great match and awesome experience!

May and June are the most popular months of the year to go clam digging (潮干狩り, shiohigari ) in Japan. You may think that clam digging itself is not so special, but “clam digging” is seriously an important keyword in Japanese society and history! I was very surprised by the extent to which the Japanese people love clam digging as a family activity! It also appears to get significant news coverage every year.

I organized a group of friends to try out clam digging in Chiba prefecture (apparently the area with greatest number of famous beaches for clam digging near Tokyo). Check out photos, tips, and our full itinerary below~

Heading out to our clam digging adventure!

Many Japanese families are well equipped with full wading gear, tents, picnic lunches, and even more when they hit the muddy beaches for clam digging. However, most beaches are well equipped to provide visitors with rental buckets (200-500 JPY), net bags (~200 JPY), digging rakes (200-500 JPY), and even hats and sandals if you just show up without any gear!

Tips for Clam Digging

1. Dig in the shallow water areas – clams from that area will have less sand inside.

2. Do not pick up clams that are lying on top of the sand. Healthy clams hide down under the sand.

3. You do not need to dig very deeply, only about 5-15 cms

4. Clams tend to congregate together so if you are digging and not finding any clams pretty quickly, move to a new spot (you should be able to find a lot in one spot).

Ta-da! The result of my hard work – filling up a 2kg net of clams!

楽しい一日でしたが、一日中太陽の下にいたので、日焼けして、腰も痛くなりました！>.<;

Ended the day off with an onsen theme park at Mikazuki (half-moon) hotel. Highly recommended as they also have water slides and many different hot spring pools for you to soak in (*swimsuits required for the outdoor hot spring theme park*)!

We had an oiran workshop to practice being an Oiran for the upcoming festival! An expert on the Oiran Culture came to speak to us about the history of Taiyu oiran in the Edo period and teach us how to do the unique Oiran Dochu walk for the parade! Before we put on the takageta sandals, we practiced walking the “Soto-Hachimonji” walk in the tatami room.

After learning and practicing the walk in the tatami room, it was time to go out on the streets to practice with the Takageta sandals! These sandals have a 10cm high platform, and it was indeed rather difficult to walk in them! We practiced for about 3 hours, and with all the squatting movements, it was quite a workout!

By the way, I was recently mentioned in Japanese news! The Shinagawa Business News had an article featuring me as the first ever foreigner to be an Oiran in the festival!
