Gokayama, located in Nanto City, is a rich, emerald oasis where locals honour the slow way of living. Here, enchanting villages with ancient grass-roof houses are scattered among the vibrant mountains of the Toyama region, which lies around 350km from the metropolis of Tokyo.

Together with SeiRogai, I ventured there to film the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour, to lift the veil on some of the unspoilt jewels of real and rugged Japan, far from the trodden tourist trails of the capital.

Launched on Global Virtual Travel, the video allows you to float like a bird among the mist-draped mountains. You can almost taste the crisp, alpine air, hear the trickle of a stream and watch as an ancient world falls into place around you.

Gokayama in Nanto City: Discovering the Idylls of Old

南砺市・五箇山：古き良き日本を発見する旅

Gokayama, located in Nanto City, is a region nestled within the pristine mountains of Toyama.

Forming part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the enchanting villages of Suganuma and Ainokura are rich with stories, begging to be told. Yet the region remains relatively under the radar, offering the ultimate antidote to the tumult of everyday life.

五箇山は南砺市に位置し、富山の手つかずの山々に抱かれた地域です。

ユネスコの世界遺産の一部を形成するこの魅力的な菅沼と相倉集落には、語られることを待つ豊かな物語が詰まっています。それにもかかわらず、この地域は比較的知られておらず、日常生活の喧騒から逃れるための究極の中和剤を提供しています。

Suganuma: Where Time Stands Still

菅沼集落：時が止まった村

Our journey began in Suganuma, where low-lying clouds part to reveal a tiny village of thatched-roof buildings, enveloped in vibrant storybook scenery.

These gassho-zukuri houses, as they are known, are hundreds of years old. As we strolled through the village, a local lady explained how the roof of each one is pitched at approximately 60 degrees to protect against the heavy snow of winter. The style is said to resemble two hands joined together.

旅は菅沼集落から始まりました。低く垂れ込めた雲が開けると、茅葺き屋根の家々が絵本のような景色に包まれた小さな村が現れます。

これらの合掌造りの家屋は数百年前に建てられたものです。村を散策中、地元の女性が冬の雪から家を守るために屋根が約60度の傾斜になっていることを教えてくれました。このスタイルは、手を合わせた形に例えられます。

After escaping from the overstimulation of the city, it was glorious to get lost in the tranquil atmosphere of an ancient settlement, lost in time. If it’s your first time visiting Gokayama, I recommend spending your first few moments doing just that.

都会の刺激から解放され、静かな村の雰囲気に浸るのは素晴らしい体験でした。五箇山を初めて訪れるなら、まずはこの時間を忘れたような村の空気に浸ることをお勧めします。

Next up, stop by the traditional Tenohira coffee shop, before exploring more soul-soothing natural landscapes surrounding the village, from rich rice fields to forested hillsides, where the locals cut grass for use in the gassho-zukuri roofs.

散策後には、「茶房 掌」に立ち寄り、村を囲む美しい田んぼや森林に目を向けるのも良いでしょう。合掌造りの屋根に使われる茅を刈る地元の人々の姿が見られます。

Visiting Gorobei Restaurant By Village Chief Nakashima

After exploring the stunning scenery, the next step on the tour took us inside the Gorobei Restaurant, housed within a traditional gassho-zukuri building. This is a beautiful space to sit by the open fireplace and taste a delicious lunch set with Iwana-Yaki.

Here you can indulge in some of the world’s freshest fish reared by Nakashima Kucho himself. Each fish is caught from a nearby pond as soon as an order is made – in contrast to other restaurants in Nanto City, where the fish is bought from nearby farms.

美しい景色を堪能した後、ツアーの次の目的地として「食べ処 吾郎平」に向かいました。このお食事処は、伝統的な合掌造りの建物内にあり、囲炉裏のそばでくつろぎながら、岩魚焼きの美味しいランチセットを味わえる素敵な空間です。

ここでは、中島区長ご自身が育てた世界でも屈指の新鮮な魚を楽しむことができます。注文が入るとすぐに、近くの池から魚を釣り上げて提供されるのが特徴です。南砺市内の他のレストランでは、近隣の養殖場から魚を仕入れるのが一般的ですが、このレストランでは全く異なる体験が味わえます。

Vegetarians can enjoy an equally revitalising meal with local Gokayama tofu and wild mountain vegetables.

A Souvenir from Suganama at Arai Shop & Cafe

The final shop I recommend in Suganama village is the quaint Arai souvenir shop and cafe, where you can pick up local, handcrafted products to take a piece of the village away with you. You’ll find everything from keyrings and traditional straw hats to local snacks and toys.

However, as I discovered while filming for the tour, one of the most precious gifts of visiting this region was meeting the people who have never known another home; and the moments with them that I’ve bottled up for safekeeping.

菅沼集落でおすすめの最後のお店は、「土産・お休み処 あらい」です。ここでは、地元の手作り製品を購入し、集落の思い出を持ち帰ることができます。キーホルダーや伝統的な 麦わら帽子、地元のおやつやおもちゃなど、さまざまな商品が揃っています。

しかし、撮影中に気づいたことは、この地域を訪れる最も貴重なお土産は、他の故郷を知らない人々との出会いであり、彼らと過ごしたひとときを心の中に大切にしまえたことでした。

Ainokura: The Cultural Heart of Gokayama

The next stop on our Gokayama tour was Ainokura, a neighbouring UNESCO village. As the sun rose over the grass-roof houses, we learnt of a centuries-old craft still practised in the village.

By stepping inside an eclectic workshop known as the Washi Paper Workshop, you can get a glimpse of the unique washi paper-making experience, and even try it for yourself.

五箇山ツアーの次の目的地は、隣接するユネスコ世界遺産の相倉集落でした。茅葺き屋根の家々に朝日が差し込む中、この村で今も続けられている数百年の伝統工芸について学びました。

私が訪れたのは、「五箇山和紙漉き体験館」という趣のある工房で、独自の和紙作りの体験を垣間見ることができ、実際に自分で和紙を作ることも可能です。

In this very special store, an innovative local artisan is demonstrating the incredible strength of paper made from natural fibres by crafting dolls, toys, and even a wedding dress – all made from washi.

The creative craftsman who owns the store is more than happy to show you the painstaking process and help you make your own piece of washi paper. This makes the perfect souvenir from a place where natural materials are still used for everything, and plastics are few and far between.

この特別な工房では、地元の革新的な職人が自然の繊維で作られた和紙の驚くべき強度を証明しながら、和紙で作られた人形やおもちゃ、さらにはウェディングドレスまで、製作しています。

工房のオーナーである創造的な職人は、丁寧な製作工程を喜んで見せてくれるだけでなく、自分自身が和紙作りに挑戦できるよう手伝ってくれます。自然素材が今も日常的に使われ、プラスチックがほとんど見られないこの場所で、自分で作った和紙は最高のお土産になることでしょう。

Meeting the Twin Cliffs

Ainokura literally means ‘Twin Rock cliffs’ – so take your time to stroll through the village and see if you can spot the far-off peaks.

Derived from the words ‘Ai’ which means pair and ‘kura’ which means rock cliffs, it’s clear that this whole village is inspired by its enchanting natural surroundings.

A journey to Gokayama is a chance to reset, recharge, and relax in beautiful, tranquil surroundings, from the twin peaks, cloaked in trees, to the terraced fields and winding riverways.

相倉という名前は文字通り「相対する岩壁」を意味しています。村を散策しながら、遠くにそびえる山々を探してみてください。

Want to travel where few have ventured before, and visit this captivating place for yourself?

Gokayama is located approximately 350km northwest of Tokyo and has received revived touristic interest following the release of the VR360 Virtual Tour. The closest airport is in Toyama, where you can get a bus to Ainokura.

Alternatively, you can drive from Tokyo in around six hours, or catch the three-hour bullet train to Toyama/Shin-Takaoka Station, followed by a 40-minute drive.

If you’re visiting nearby Kanazawa City, you can also drive in around one hour or catch the bus straight to Gokayama, making it easy to add as part of a larger itinerary.

Japanese apples are popular for their large size and sweetness. Prized as much for beauty as for taste, apples in pristine condition can fetch hefty price tags at upscale Japanese department stores. To date, Japanese farmers and researchers have recorded over 20 local varieties, including the famous Fuji apple. Less well known but equally delicious is the Yonesaki apple with a history of over 120 years growing on the slopes between the inland mountains and rias-styled Pacific coasts in the Yonesaki region of Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Prefecture.

“No, not that one!” My guide, Takashi-san, an apple farmer and head of the NPO LAMP, calls me over to show me the right way to pick the best Yonesaki apples from the orchard.

Autumn brings an array of fruits ready for harvesting, and there is nothing more refreshing than going apple-picking on a crisp fall day. When I lived in the US as a university student, there was always an annual tradition of visiting fragrant and beautiful orchards and plucking ripe fresh apples off the trees to usher in the arrival of Autumn. It was my first time visiting an apple orchard in Japan, however.

秋にはたくさんの果物が収穫できるようになります。さわやかな秋の日にリンゴ狩りをすることほど爽快なことはありません。私がアメリカに住んでいた大学生の時、毎年好例、香り高く美しいリンゴ園を尋ね、熟した新鮮なリンゴを木から摘み取って秋の訪れを知るという習慣がありました。でも、日本でリンゴ園を訪れるのは初めてでした。

Apple growing is best in a cool region with low rainfall. In Japan, the Tohoku area in particular is famous for apple cultivation. The top producer is Aomori, followed by Nagano, Iwate, Akita, and Yamagata Prefectures.

リンゴの栽培は、降雨量の少ない涼しい地域が最適です。 特に東北地方はリンゴ栽培で有名です。 首位の生産地は青森県で、そして長野県、岩手県、秋田県、山形県がそれに続きます。

One Autumn weekend, I found myself at the NPO LAMP’s orchards in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. Rikuzentaka City was one of the hardest-hit areas during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

ある秋の週末、岩手県陸前高田市にある特定非営利活動法人LAMPのリンゴ園に行きました。 陸前高田市は、2011年の東日本大震災と津波で最も被害が大きかった地域の1つです。

The NPO LAMP was established by a group of enterprising and spirited farmers with an aim to pass the tradition of Yonesaki Apples to the next generation, to increase the population of people involved in apple farming, and to make the region a better place to work and live.

3.11の災害により農地が破壊されたことと、既存の労働者の高齢化の問題により、農地は急速に減少しています。 NPO LAMPは、「米崎りんご」の伝統を次世代に引き継ぎ、りんご栽培に携わる人々の人口を増やし、地域をより働きやすく、住みやすい場所にするために、意欲的で元気な農家のグループによって設立されました。

At the NPO LAMP orchards, more than 23 different types of apples are grown, including lesser-known Kitakurenai apples and Shinano Gold apples to the world-famous Fuji apples. Different species of apples have different harvest times, beginning as early as July, but the bulk are from September to November.

NPO LAMPリンゴ園では、あまり知られていない「北紅（きたくれない）」や「信濃ゴールド」から世界的に有名な「ふじりんご」まで、23種類以上のリンゴが栽培されています。 リンゴの種類によって収穫時期は7月から始まりますが、大部分は9月から11月です。

Rikuzentakata’s Yonesaki Apples: Do Not Hunger for Red!

陸前高田市の米崎りんご：赤に惑わされないで！

Rikuzentaka’s pride and joy is the locally cultivated Yonesaki apple. According to Takashi-san, the key to picking the sweetest and juiciest apple isn’t to be enticed by how red it is, but rather to look at how yellow the bottoms are. Each Yonesaki apple has an undertone, a slight blush of yellow in its pink-red skin. The best Yonesaki apples are the ones whose yellow blush also exhibits a slight greenness. How high up the tree the apple is growing also does not have much correlation to its sweetness.

Hence, rather than just picking the reddest apple you see growing at the top of the tree, it is most important to find one with the right balance of the red body with a yellow bottom!

陸前高田市の誇りと喜びは、地元で栽培されている「米崎りんご」です。 タカシさんによると、最も甘くてジューシーなリンゴを摘む秘訣は、それがどれほど赤いかではなく、お尻がどれほど黄色いかを見ることです。「米崎りんご」は、ピンクがかった赤の皮にわずかに黄色味を帯びた皮があります。一番美味しい米崎りんごは、黄色味を帯びた赤い皮に緑がかったものです。リンゴの木の高い所でどれだけよく育っているかも、その甘さとはあまり関係がありません。

したがって、木の上で成長している最も赤いリンゴを摘み取るのではなく、赤い体と黄色のお尻のバランスが適切なものを見つけることがとても重要ですよ！

How to Pick Apples

リンゴの選び方

When picking the apple, it is important not to just pull on it! In order to maintain the apple’s pristine condition, you should use a cupped hand to cradle and lift up the apple while twisting gently; if it seems like it will come away with its stalk intact, it is ready to be picked. To pick it, you gradually twist and bend it at a 90-degree angle and the apple will snap off the branch naturally. Don’t force apples off a tree because you may bring the fruit spurs away with the fruit and damage the skin of the apple!

リンゴを摘むときは、ただ引っ張らないことが重要です！リンゴの新鮮で完全なままの状態を維持するには、手をカップ状にゆりかごの形にして持ち上げ、優しくひねりながら摘み取ります。茎が傷付かず直ぐに外れるようであれば、摘み取る準備ができています。それを摘むには、90度の角度で徐々にひねって曲げると、リンゴは自然に枝からポキッと離れます。 リンゴを木から力強く無理に取らないでください。リンゴの若い枝をリンゴと一緒に摘み取ると、リンゴの皮を傷つける可能性があります。

An Exceptional Apple Orchard

The uniqueness of the Yonesaki apple lies in its location: these Rikuzentaka apple farms are the only ones situated in the coastal area, facing both land and sea with plenty of sunshine. It is rare to have an apple farm overlooking the sea. Out of the over 100 orchards in Iwate Prefecture, Takashi-san informs me that only about 10 face the coast, and even fewer are actually next to the sea!

「米崎りんご」の特別さはその場所にあります。陸前高田のりんご園は、陸と海の両方に面し、陽光あふれる沿岸部にある唯一のりんご園です。 海を見下ろすリンゴ畑はめったにありません。 岩手県の100ヶ所以上のりんご園のうち、タカシさんは、海岸に面しているのは約10ヶ所だけであり、実際には海に隣接しているりんご園はさらに少ないと教えてくれました！

After I had my fun browsing the orchard to pick the best apples I could find, one of the apple farmers cut some apples up for me to have a taste!

りんご園を見て、最も美味しいリンゴを見つけて摘み取るのを楽しんだ後、リンゴ園の方が、私に味わわせるためにリンゴをいくつか切って下さいました！

They were perhaps some of the most aromatic and juiciest apples I have before!
The sweetness and acidity of the apple were in perfect balance, with a delicious crunch to each bite.

それらは私が今迄に食べた中で最も芳香があり果汁いっぱいのリンゴでした！
リンゴの甘さと酸味は完璧にバランスが取れており、一口ごとにシャキシャキとした美味しい噛み応えがありました。

How to Store Apples for a Whole Year!

リンゴを一年中保管する方法！

Another important tip I learned, in terms of enjoying apple season to its fullest, is to keep your apples cold — no matter the variety. Apples can continue to ripen if left outside at room temperature, so you should always, always refrigerate them as soon as possible. I was shocked to learn that organic Yonesaki Apples can actually keep fresh for an entire year if stored properly! In fact, Yonesaki apples taste the best after a change in temperature, and storing them in cold temperatures soon after picking will bring out a condensed caramel flavor. I put mine in the fridge as soon as I got home, and even months later, they still look perfect! Pretty amazing!

リンゴの季節を最大限に楽しむという点で私が学んだもう1つの重要なポイントは、品種に関係なく、リンゴを冷たく保つことです。 リンゴは室温で屋外に置いておくと熟し続ける可能性があるため、常にできるだけ早く冷蔵する必要があります。 オーガニックの「米崎りんご」は、きちんと保管すれば、本当に一年中新鮮な状態を保つことができると知って驚きました！ 実は「米崎りんご」は温度が変化した後の味が最高で、摘み取った直後に低温で保存すると、液化して凝縮されたキャラメルの風味が出てきます。 私は家に帰ってすぐに冷蔵庫に入れました。数ヶ月経った今でも、その時のままに見えますよ！凄いでしょう！

Final Thoughts: Wishing on an Apple Tree

最後に：リンゴの木に願いを

International media has primarily featured Rikuzentakata as one of the cities in Japan that has suffered crippling damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. It is now almost a decade after the earthquake and tsunami, but Rikuzentakata is still undergoing reconstruction up to this day. During my visit to Rikuzentakata City with fellow Singaporeans, we witnessed how the locals are striving hard to rebuild the city every day and make continuous progress with their reconstruction efforts, while sharing their appreciation for the beauty of their coastal hometown and inspire hope in all visitors.

2011年3月11日の東日本大震災で壊滅的な被害を受けた日本の都市の1つとして、国際メディアは主に陸前高田市を取り上げました。地震と津波からほぼ10年が経過しましたが、陸前高田市は今もまだ再建中です。シンガポール人達と一緒に陸前高田市を訪れている間、地元の人々が故郷の海岸の美しさを讃え合いながら毎日街を再建し、活性化するのための努力を継続的に進めている様子を目の当たりにして、そこを尋ねるすべての人達にまた訪れたいという気持ちにさせてくれました。

The mission of the NPO LAMP to “hand down the Yonesaki apple, which has a long history in Rikuzentakata, to the future generation” represents how apple farmers in Rikuzentakata cultivate thousands of beautiful, delicious fruit to be cherished. To me, it felt that each apple symbolizes the well wishes and hopes of the people of Rikuzentakata to spread happiness to others all around the world.  

「岩手県陸前高田市の特産品であり歴史ある「米崎りんご」を育てながら、米崎りんごをはじめとするリンゴ園の皆様の「やりたい！」を応援し、地域の農業と暮らしを守ります。」というNPO LAMPの使命は、陸前高田市のリンゴ園農家が何千もの美しくておいしい果物を育てて大切にすることを表しています。それぞれのリンゴは、陸前高田市の人々が「世界中に幸せを広めたい」という願いと希望を象徴していると感じました。

Perhaps the sheer abundance of apples on an apple tree during its harvest season is the key to understanding how to open our hearts to the abundance in our lives, even if it may feel sparse at times. When people, like the apple tree, are willing to give our hard grown fruits of labor to nurture others freely and openly, we will in return receive more, often in unexpected ways. By affirming and feeling thankful for what we have in the present, we may open up the channels for our own abundance in life. This sentiment is perhaps most important to remember during times of hardship. We can all learn lessons of gratitude from the people of Rikuzentakata City who have lost so much, yet are able to radiate so much warmth, glistening like sunshine streaming on the Yonesaki apple orchards.  

ある意味、例え私達の生活が質素であったとしても、収穫期のリンゴの木にリンゴがたくさん実ることは、私達が心を開いて豊かであることを理解するための鍵だと思います。人が、リンゴの木のように、努力して熱心に実らせた果実を自由に分け隔てなく皆に喜んで与える時、私達は気が付かない間にたくさんのお返しを受け取るでしょう。私達が現在持っているものを受け入れ、感謝することによって、私達は自分自身の豊かな人生への道を開くかもしれないと思いました。この感情は、困難な時期に覚えておくべき最も重要なことだと思います。私達は震災で多くを失った陸前高田市の人々から感謝の気持ちを学ぶことができると思います。震災後の不幸にもかかわらず、彼らは米崎のリンゴ園に注いでいる光り輝く太陽のように暖かな心を皆に放つことができるでしょう。

Embarking on the journey to film the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour in Gokayama was not merely a professional endeavor; it was a deeply personal and enriching experience that left an indelible mark on me as SeiRogai achieved this new milestone. The collaboration with Nanto City was our first VR Tour production outside of the Tokyo metropolitan area, and in the middle of the Japanese Alps no less.

五箇山での南砺市VR360バーチャルツアーの撮影に乗り出したことは、
単なる職業的な試みにとどまりませんでした。
私にとって非常に個人的で豊かな経験であり、
SeiRogaiがこの新しいマイルストーンを達成する事で、
忘れがたい印象を残しました。
南砺市とのコラボレーションは、東京都心地域以外での
初のVRツアー制作であり、日本アルプスの中心地で行われました。

We launched our VR Tour production and digital platform, Global Virtual Travel, as a new business to address the inequity of travel and challenges of regional revitalization in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to create new content using VR360 to showcase stories of local areas across Japan that are not well known nor necessarily easily accessible but would greatly benefit from increased awareness and inbound tourism for the local economy. Through the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour project, we gained many new insights into the potential power and influence that our project can have not only for international audiences but also improving and supporting local communities.

As with any startup, entrepreneurs typically have to wear multiple hats. Whereas Samuel was leading while also taking on many different specialist roles on the production team, I had to both drive the business operations and logistics while also appearing on camera. This was perhaps the most challenging aspect of this project. As it was outside of Tokyo and filmed in remote villages, we could only take a small crew with us, and everybody had to conduct multiple roles simultaneously. It was truly an exercise in multitasking, flexibility, and adapting to challenging situations.

スタートアップでは、起業家は通常、複数の役割を担当しなければなりません。
サムミヨルがプロダクションチームで多くの異なる専門家の役割を兼任しながら
リーダーシップをとっていたのに対し、私は事業運営とロジスティクスを推進すると同時に、
カメラの前に立たなければなりませんでした。

東京から離れた場所で、遠隔の村で撮影するため、少人数のクルーしか連れて行けず、
全員が複数の役割を同時にこなさなければなりませんでした。

From the moment I set foot in the World Heritage villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, I knew this would be a journey unlike any other. Surrounded by centuries-old gassho-zukuri houses and the majestic natural beauty of Gokayama, I felt transported back in time. The villages of Gokayama in Nanto City of Toyama Prefecture, unlike the neighboring Shirakawa-Go in Gifu Prefecture, are known for retaining their authenticity as “time slip” destinations. When visiting Gokayama, you truly feel like you have slipped back in time, as not only are the gassho-zukuri houses centuries-old, but also the local residents have proudly preserved their traditional way of life.

これは今までにない旅になると確信しました。
数世紀前の合掌造り家屋と五箇山の雄大な自然美に囲まれて
時間が逆行したような気持ちになりました。
富山県南砺市の五箇山の集落は、隣接する岐阜県の白川郷とは異なり
「タイムスリップ」の目的地としてその正統性を保ち続けていることで知られています。
五箇山を訪れると、合掌造り家屋が数世紀前からのものであるだけでなく
地元の人たちが伝統的な生活様式を誇り高く維持しているため、
まるでタイムスリップしたかのような感覚を味わうことができるのです。

Crafting Immersive Experiences

As the presenter of the Nanto City VR Tour, my role was to guide viewers through the enchanting landscapes and cultural landmarks of Nanto City and also provide opportunities for interactions with the local residents. Every frame was meticulously crafted to create an immersive experience that would leave a lasting impression on our audience. From the tranquil rice fields and bed & breakfast stays in a traditional gassho-tsukuri house with the local villagers, to the mesmerizing kokiriko folk song and dance and flavorful local cuisine, we wanted viewers to feel as if they were truly there and exploring with me in Gokayama, experiencing it all firsthand.

南砺市の魅力的な風景や文化的な名所を案内し、
地元の住民との交流の機会を視聴者に提供することでした。
視聴者の印象に残るような没入感のある体験を提供するため、
1コマ1コマを丹念に作り上げました。
静かな田園風景や伝統的な合掌造りの宿泊施設、
魅惑的な心子（こきりこ）民謡や踊り、風味豊かな郷土料理など、
視聴者が一緒に五箇山を探検しているように感じられることを望んでいました。

Filming in a UNESCO World Heritage site presented its own set of challenges. From unpredictable weather to logistical hurdles, there were moments when we wondered if we would be able to successfully capture the magic of the Gokayama region. But with the support of our dedicated team and the warm hospitality of the local community, we overcame every obstacle and emerged stronger than ever.

ユネスコ世界遺産での撮影は、独自の課題を抱えていました。
予測不可能な天候からロジスティクスのハードルまで、
五箇山の魅力をうまく撮影できるかどうか不安になる瞬間もありました。

Mr. Sekine warmly welcomed me into his store, where he introduced me to the store manager, Ms. Suzuki, along with the dedicated staff operating the Ikebukuro store. As I stepped inside, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the incredible variety of goods on display!

Once, someone brought in a whole ivory tusk. Another time, someone wanted to pawn themselves! Of course, Sekine’s staff always politely refused to take people as collateral.

Remarkably, to this day, Sekine’s primary business remains centered around pawnbroking (short-term money lending), serving the local community with consumer financing. Unlike bank loans, customers entrust their items to the pawnshop for a short-term loan. They can retrieve their deposited items by repaying the borrowed amount with interest. If the money cannot be repaid, the pawnshop will sell the items in their possession for cash. This system has provided a safe financial option for many people, and it continues to be utilized regularly.

In front of Sekine’s pawnbroking office, which continues to be the primary business of the Sekine Pawnshop and serves Japanese customers with essential consumer financing services to this very day. However, this service is not available for foreign visitors. This rule applies even to items from special designer collaborations, so be attentive to the appearance of the logo.

2. Scrutinize the Stitching and Texture of Engraved Patterns

On classic brown Louis Vuitton bags, the stitching should have a mustard yellow color, not a bright yellow hue. It should display impeccable consistency in stitch size, spacing, and quality. Any loose threads should raise suspicions.

When assessing the engraved monogram pattern, genuine engravings exhibit a heightened prominence as they are meticulously carved deeper into the leather. Conversely, replica patterns often appear considerably flatter.

Furthermore, another telltale sign lies in the texture of the leather. Upon close examination using a loupe (a small magnifying glass employed by jewelers and watchmakers), authentic Vachetta leather showcases a more pronounced textured effect, setting it apart from the less textured surface of counterfeit handbags.

Since 1983, Louis Vuitton has employed a six-character date code stamp for its handbags. The first two characters are letters (indicating the place), while the remaining four characters are numbers (indicating the month and year of production). However, the company periodically updates its coding. Since 2007, the digit code has represented the week number of the year when the item was produced. More recently, all items manufactured since 2021 now feature microchips programmed with unique digital IDs on a private blockchain owned by LVMH.

The Gion (祇園) district of Kyoto is famous for its nostalgic appeal as a place offering visitors a historic atmosphere steeped in the world of traditional Japanese culture and arts. I spent a couple of nights in Kyoto recently and a friend invited me to stay at Sowaka, a charming hotel in the Gion-Yasuka district. The hotel is situated just a 3-minute walk down the street from one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire region, the Yasaka Jinja shrine.

Besides its ideal location to begin exploring Kyoto, I discovered that Sowaka is elegantly designed as a place for people to relax and tap into their inner spirituality to explore the rich history of Japan’s ancient capital while enjoying modern metropolitan conveniences.

In this article, I share a review of my experience at Sowaka and its restaurant, La Bombance Gion.

京都の祇園は、日本の伝統文化や芸術の世界に浸りながら、歴史的な雰囲気が味わえるノスタルジックな場所として有名です。先日、京都に2泊3日滞在した際、友人に誘われて、祇園・八坂にある魅力的なホテル「そわか」に宿泊しました。このホテルは、この地域全体で最も人気のある観光地のひとつである八坂神社から、歩いてわずか3分のところに位置しています。

Small Luxury Hotel: Sowaka

スモールラグジュアリーホテル：そわか

When I first arrived to the hotel, I was a bit confused about where the entrance was. SOWAKA has been verified as one of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World” (SLH). However, unlike many Western luxury hotels with grand entrances, the entrance to SOWAKA seemed to be just a small alleyway covered with a simple white curtain (暖簾 noren, meaning “warm curtain”) often used for the entrances of restaurants and stores in Japan.

This perhaps unusual entrance is your first step into Kyoto’s history. Gion is renowned for its high concentration of traditional wooden machiya houses, and SOWAKA is recognized as a kyo-machiya because its main building was restored from a ryotei (traditional Japanese restaurant) first constructed in the 1910s. Due to the fact that property taxes were formerly based upon the size of street frontage, many houses were built with narrow facades only a few meters wide, but extend up to twenty meters in from the street! Pretty clever, if you ask me.

初めてホテルに到着したとき、入り口がどこにあるのか、ちょっと戸惑いました。「そわか」は、「スモール・ラグジュアリー・ホテル（SLH）」に加盟しています。しかし、欧米の高級ホテルが立派なエントランスを持つのとは異なり、SOWAKAのエントランスは、日本のレストランや店舗のエントランスによく使われるシンプルな白いカーテン（暖簾）で覆われた小さな路地に過ぎないように思えたのです。

外国人にとって珍しい玄関口は、京都の歴史に触れる第一歩となります。祇園は木造の町家が多いことで知られていますが、「そわか」の本館は大正時代に建てられた元の老舗料亭を復元し、京町家として認定されています。昔は固定資産税が間口の広さによって決められていたため、数メートル幅の狭いファサードでも、道路から20メートルも奥に入った家が多くありました。なかなか賢いですね。

The Lounge

ラウンジについて

After enjoying our welcome drink, we were given a tour of the hotel and our rooms.
The lounge area is open to all guests to use freely during their stay. It was a nice place to relax and read some of the books curated by the hotel on Japanese culture and architecture, or to meet with friends and plan our sightseeing route for the day.
Interestingly, as SOWAKA preserves the historical architecture of the ryotei, the lounge area is built upon the original kitchen.

ウェルカムドリンクを楽しんだ後は、ホテル内と客室を案内してもらいました。

ラウンジエリアは、滞在中、すべてのゲストが自由に使えるようになっています。日本の文化や建築についてホテルがキュレーションした本を読みながらリラックスしたり、友人と会ってその日の観光ルートを考えたりするのに、とてもいい場所でした。

興味深いのは、「そわか」が料亭としての昔風の建物を保存しているため、ラウンジエリアは料亭時代のキッチンの上に作られていることです。

The Kyoto basin is well-known among the Japanese to contain an abundance of pure, clear groundwater. SOWAKA continues to use the natural water drawn from beneath the hotel.  In Japanese legends, the waters of Kyoto are said to possess spiritual power, especially the sacred Gion water of Yasaka Shrine, located near the hotel. Kyoto’s soft groundwater has extremely low levels of calcifying ions, and is often credited for the beautiful, clear skin of women in the region, including the geisha and maiko.  It is also said to have a delicate, smooth taste, which contributes to the high quality and slight tendency towards sweetness of local sake breweries.

京都の盆地には、清らかな地下水が豊富にあることは、日本人にはよく知られていると思います。「そわか」では、その地下から汲み上げた天然水を使い続けています。 日本の伝説では、京都の水には霊力があるとされており、特にホテルの近くにある八坂神社の祇園水は神聖な水とされています。京都の軟水は石灰化イオンが極めて少なく、芸者や舞妓など京都の女性の肌が美しくキメが整っているのは、この水のおかげだと言われていますよ。また、繊細でなめらかな味わいが特徴で、これが地酒の品質の高さや、やや甘口の傾向にもつながっていると言われていることもあります。

Main Building: A Museum of Historical Architecture

本館：伝統的建物の博物館

The ryotei restaurant that closed its doors in 2012, was built in the traditional sukiya Japanese residential architectural style (Sukiya-zukuri, 数寄屋造り) by tea ceremony masters. Suki means “refined, well cultivated taste and delight in elegant pursuits,” especially in reference to the enjoyment of the exquisitely performed tea ceremony. In the historical definition, a sukiya denoted a building with a tea ceremony room (known as a chashitsu), but later came to indicate a style of designing buildings based on tea house aesthetics more generally. The essence of sukiya is the intention of creating modest, rustic spaces that not only reflects one’s humility, but also emphasizes the importance of hospitality. The buildings are designed to let guests know that while the house may not hold much material value, the sincere hospitality offered is the true value.

Although the hotel has been renovated, Sowaka retains many of the architectural features of the historical ryotei restaurant. The corridors are maze-like to allow diners privacy when they entered or exited the restaurant. Hotel guest rooms have been refurbished from the original private dining rooms, and in the same aesthetic of privacy, all doors remain unnumbered.

2012年に閉店した料亭は、茶人による伝統的な数寄屋造りの建築様式で建てられました。「数寄」とは、「洗練された、よく磨かれた味わい、優雅な楽しみ」を意味し、特に精妙に行われる茶の湯の楽しみを指しています。歴史的な定義では、数奇屋は茶室を持つ建物を指しましたが、後に茶室の美学に基づいた建築物の設計様式を指すようになりました。数奇屋の本質は、質素で素朴な空間をつくり、謙虚な気持ちを表すだけでなく、おもてなしの心を大切にすることでもあります。数寄屋造りの建物は、家の物質的価値は低くても、真心のこもったもてなしこそが真の価値であることを客に知らせるために設計されています。

ホテルは改装されましたが、「そわか」は歴史ある料亭の建築様式を多く残しています。廊下は迷路のように入り組んでおり、出入りの際にプライバシーを確保できるようになっています。客室も当時の個室を改装したもので、プライバシーを重視し、扉にはすべて番号が振られていません。

The style of every room at SOWAKA is different, but perhaps one of the more unique rooms in the main building is the “Maisonette with Tea Ceremony Room,” offering guests the experience of having a private chashitsu next to the bedroom.

SOWAKAの客室はそれぞれ趣きが異なりますが、本館の中でも特にユニークなのが「メゾネット茶室付」という客室です。

On the second floor of the maisonette, guests can take a Japanese-style bath and then cool off in the tatami room next to it (originally called the “Hyotan Gourd Room”). I am not sure why it was named as such, but it might have to do with how “hyotan” gourds have been considered symbols of good luck since ancient times in Japan.

メゾネットの2階には、日本式のお風呂があり、その隣にある畳の小部屋（元は「ひょうたんの間」と呼ばれました）でお風呂上りに涼んでいただくことができます。なぜ、このような名前がついたのかはわかりませんが、古来、ひょうたんが縁起の良いものとされてきたことと関係があるのかもしれません。

Annex Building: Modern Japanese Design Inspired by Sukiya

新館： 数寄屋をモチーフにした和モダンのデザイン

The Annex building was newly built in March 2019, and features modern Japanese design inspired by the traditional sukiya architectural style. Both the main and annex buildings of Sowaka were designed by Shigenori Uoya, an award-winning Kyoto architect who has made a name for himself converting old machiya houses into hotels and townhouses with atrium gardens.

Similar to the main building, all guest rooms in the annex building are unique and spaciously laid out so that no two rooms are adjacent to each other, providing guests privacy in their rooms. I stayed in Room 211, the “Courtyard View Bath Higashiyama View” room. This room was extra spacious, seemingly augmented with a sloped ceiling that hits 3.7m at its highest point.

新館は2019年3月に新築され、伝統的な数寄屋建築の様式にインスパイアされた和モダンなデザインが特徴です。「そわか」の本館・新館ともに、古い町家を吹き抜けや庭園のあるホテルや町家に改装し、数々の受賞歴を持つ京都の建築家、魚谷繁礼氏が設計を担当しました。

本館同様、新館の客室も個性的で、2つの部屋が隣接しないようにゆったりとレイアウトされており、客室でのプライバシーが確保されています。私が宿泊したのは、211号室の「坪庭ビューバス東山ビュー」です。この部屋は広々としていて、一番高いところでは3.7mにもなる勾配天井でさらに広さを増しているようです。

The Restaurant: La Bombance Gion

レストラン: ラ・ボンバンス祇園

SOWAKA’s restaurant “La Bombance Gion” is the third installment of the award-winning “La Bombance” in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. For more than a decade, Michelin-starred La Bombance has enticed gourmet connoisseurs through its dishes. La Bombance Gion uses locally sourced ingredients to create seasonal menus that creatively reimagine traditional Kyoto-style kaiseki ryori (Japanese haute cuisine).

「そわか」のレストラン「ラ・ボンバンス祇園」は、数々の賞を受賞した東京・西麻布の「ラ・ボンバンス」の第3弾です。ミシュランの星を獲得した「ラ・ボンバンス」は、10年以上にわたり、その料理でグルメ通を魅了してきました。ラ・ボンバンス祇園では、地元産の食材を使い、伝統的な京懐石料理をクリエイティブにアレンジした季節のメニューを提供しています。

Staying at SOWAKA was like visiting a sophisticated museum of the architectural culture and history of Japan. The name “Sowaka”” comes from a Sanskrit blessing meaning “may there be happiness,” often spoken at the end of Buddhist sutras that have been chanted in the numerous temples of Kyoto for centuries, and it is befitting that the hotel strives to bless visitors with happiness and tranquility in the heart of one of the busiest districts of Kyoto. 

What impressed me the most was SOWAKA’s dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of the original 100-year-old building and support Kyoto’s traditional artisans and products made by local craftsmen. When carpenters worked on the restoration, they selected the materials carefully to preserve the original materials and carpentry, even going to lengths such as mixing new clay with the original clay in order to maintain the historical integrity of the clay walls.  

「そわか」に滞在することは、日本の建築文化と歴史に関する洗練された博物館を訪れるようなものでした。ホテル名の「そわか」は、京都の寺院で何世紀にもわたって唱えられてきた仏教のお経の最後によく使われる「幸せがありますように」という意味のサンスクリット語の祝福に由来しており、京都で最もにぎやかな街の中心で訪れる人々に幸せと静けさを与えようとするホテルとしてふさわしいと思います。

私が最も感銘を受けたのは、築100年の建物の文化遺産を守り、京都の伝統的な職人や地元の職人による製品を支援する「そわか」の献身的な姿勢です。大工さんが修復作業をする際、オリジナルの素材や大工仕事を残すために材料を厳選し、土壁の復元で昔のままの完成度を保つためにオリジナルの土に新しい土を混ぜるといったことまでしたそうです。

Room Wear || 部屋着

The roomwear provided to guests is fashioned after “Samue” （作務衣), the work clothing traditionally worn by Japanese Buddhist monks when engaged in “samu” or labor duty. They were comfortable to lounge and sleep in!

宿泊客に提供される部屋着は、日本の僧侶が作務に従事するときに着る「作務衣」に似せて作られています。寝心地もよく、快適に過ごせました！

King-Sized Bed || キングサイズのベッド

Those of you who are familiar with traveling in Japan and staying at Japanese ryokans or hotels will know that King size beds are a rarity, if not almost non-existent (two twin beds pushed together would most likely be the closest thing you will get). Hence, I really appreciated that SOWAKA’s Annex building offered proper, densely cushioned King-sized beds made with high-grade natural wool such as cashmere and camel hair! I was even more surprised to learn that the mattresses are made by Iwata, a futon shop that was established since 1830 in Kyoto’s Sanjo district. 

日本の旅館やホテルに宿泊されたことのある方ならご存知だと思いますが、日本ではキングサイズのベッドはほとんどありません（ツインベッドを2つ押し込んだものが最も近いと思われます）。だから、SOWAKAの別館には、カシミアやキャメルヘアなどの高級天然ウールを使った、密度の高いクッションのキングサイズベッドが用意されていて、本当にありがたかったです。カップルにぴったりだと思います。さらに驚いたのは、そのマットレスが1830年創業の京都三条にある布団屋「イワタ」のものであることです。

Bath Amenities || バスアメニティ

SOWAKA’s bath amenities are all from Kazurasei Shinise, a family-led business which has been selling beauty products and hair accessories since 1861. Kazurasei Shinise’s hair care and skin care products are made with 100% organic camellia oil extracted using the shop’s unique manufacturing method. Camellia oil has been long used as a beauty treatment in Japan, and is one of my personal favorite skincare oils. It is very versatile and can be used for the hair, scalp, face, and body. As it contains as much as 85% oleic acid (a natural moisturizing substance extremely similar to the lipid composition of our human skin, making it easily absorbed), camellia oil can help replenish moisture, fight free radicals, and soothe irritated skin. Many even say that the secret of the Geisha’s porcelain white skin and ink-black hair was camellia oil!

「そわか」のバスアメニティは、1861年から家族で美容品やヘアアクセサリーを販売している「かづら清老舗」のものです。独自の製法で抽出したオーガニック椿油を100％使用したヘアケア、スキンケア用品です。椿油は、日本で古くから美容に使われてきたオイルで、個人的にも好きなスキンケアオイルのひとつです。髪、頭皮、顔、体など、あらゆるところに使える万能オイルです。オレイン酸（人間の皮膚の脂質組成に極めて近い天然保湿物質で、吸収されやすい）を85％も含む椿油は、水分を補い、フリーラジカルと戦い、肌の炎症を鎮める効果があるのです。芸者の白い肌と黒い髪の秘密は、椿油にあったという説もあるほどです。

SOWAKA provides an elegant balance between restoring the rustic charm of the old machiya building while preserving its architectural history, providing guests an authentic, immersive experience to connect with both traditional and modern Kyoto at the same time. The hotel showcases the beauty of antiquated things, intertwined with elements of imaginative (re)design inspired by the contemporary era.

「そわか」は、建築の歴史を守りながら古い町屋の素朴な魅力を復元することで、お客様に伝統的な京都と現代の京都を同時につなぐ、肌で感じる体験をしていただけるよう優雅なバランスをとっています。このホテルでは、古いものの美しさと、現代からインスピレーションを得た想像力豊かな（リ）デザインの要素がうまく絡み合っています。
