A few weeks ago, my co-founder Samuel Yuen and I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Keido Online Magazine about SeiRogai‘s journey, the evolution of our Global Virtual Travel (GVT) platform, and our vision for connecting Japan with the world through immersive technology and storytelling.

Like most founders, I spend far more time building than reflecting. Our days are usually consumed by client meetings, project deadlines, government collaborations, university partnerships, investor discussions, product development, and trying to solve the next challenge before the previous one is fully behind us. In many ways, startups reward momentum more than introspection.

Yet interviews have an interesting way of interrupting that momentum.

数週間前、共同創業者であるユエン・サムミヨルと私は、ビジネスメディア『経道』のインタビューを受ける機会に恵まれました。インタビューでは、株式会社SeiRogaiの歩み、Global Virtual Travel（GVT）プラットフォームの進化、そして没入型テクノロジーとストーリーテリングを通じて日本と世界をつなぐという私たちのビジョンについてお話ししました。

多くの創業者と同じように、私も振り返る時間より、何かを築き上げる時間のほうが圧倒的に長い日々を過ごしています。私たちの日常は、クライアントとの打ち合わせ、プロジェクトの締め切り、行政との連携、大学との共同プロジェクト、投資家との対話、プロダクト開発、そして一つの課題を完全に乗り越える前に次の課題解決へと向き合うことで、常に埋め尽くされています。ある意味で、スタートアップという環境は、内省することよりも前進し続けることに価値が置かれる世界なのかもしれません。

しかし、インタビューという機会は、走り続ける日々の流れをふと立ち止まらせ、これまでの歩みを振り返るきっかけを与えてくれます。

During the interview, we described the origins of SeiRogai in the following way:

“The origin of our company was a desire to bridge the communication gap between Japan and the world.”

Looking back, I realize that this idea predates the company itself. It has shaped much of my education, career and entrepreneurial journey, and continues to influence how I think about technology, leadership and the future of international communication.

インタビューでは、SeiRogaiの原点について、次のようにお話ししました。

「創業の原点は、日本と世界との間にあるコミュニケーションのギャップを埋めたいという想いです。」

今振り返ると、この考え方はSeiRogaiという会社が生まれるよりも前から、私の中にあったものだったのだと気づきます。それは、これまでの学びやキャリア、そして起業家としての歩みを形づくり、現在もなお、テクノロジー、リーダーシップ、そして国境を越えたコミュニケーションの未来について考える上で、大きな影響を与え続けています。

From Personal Experience to a Shared Mission
個人の経験から、共通の使命へ

During the Keido interview, I was reminded of another interview I had the pleasure of doing last year with Keizaikai Magazine. Looking back, although the conversations took place more than a year apart and focused on different aspects of our work, they were connected by a consistent thread.

In the Keizaikai interview, I shared a thought that had guided me since my earliest days in Japan.

経道のインタビューを通じて、昨年『経済界』の取材を受けた際のことも改めて思い出しました。振り返ってみると、それぞれのインタビューは1年以上の時を隔てて行われ、異なる側面から私たちの取り組みについて語ったものでしたが、その根底には一貫した想いが流れていたように感じます。

経済界のインタビューでは、私が日本で歩み始めた頃から大切にしてきた、ある一つの考えについてお話ししました。

“I believed that if I could truly learn about Japan and help bridge that gap, perhaps I could become a bridge between Japan and the world.”

At the time, I was speaking from personal experience. Having grown up across Singapore and China before studying and working in the United States, Korea and Japan, I became increasingly fascinated by how people from different cultures communicate, build trust and interpret the world around them. My studies in Public Policy and East Asian Studies at Duke University, followed by International Relations and Cross-Cultural Communication at Harvard’s Regional Studies East Asia Master’s program, gave me an academic framework for questions I had already begun exploring through experience.

One lesson has stayed with me throughout that journey: misunderstandings are rarely caused by language alone. More often, they arise because people approach the same information with different assumptions and cultural perspectives.

Moving to Japan reinforced that lesson. As I travelled beyond the major cities, I discovered communities, traditional industries and local businesses with extraordinary stories to tell, yet many struggled to communicate their significance to international audiences. The issue was never quality. Rather, it was that much of their value depended on cultural context that overseas audiences simply did not have.

Over time, I realized that effective international communication is not simply about translating words. It is about translating meaning. That insight became one of the foundations of SeiRogai.

当時の私は、自身の経験をもとにお話ししていました。シンガポールと中国で育ち、その後、アメリカ、韓国、日本で学び、働く中で、異なる文化的背景を持つ人々がどのようにコミュニケーションを取り、信頼関係を築き、そして世界を理解しているのかに、次第に強い関心を抱くようになりました。デューク大学では公共政策と東アジア研究を、さらにハーバード大学大学院地域研究（東アジア）修士課程では国際関係論と異文化コミュニケーションを学びました。これらの学びは、私が実体験を通して抱いていた問いに、学術的な視点と枠組みを与えてくれました。

その歩みを通じて、今も変わらず心に留めている学びがあります。誤解は、必ずしも言葉の違いだけによって生まれるものではありません。 むしろ、人はそれぞれ異なる前提や文化的背景をもとに、同じ情報を異なる形で受け止め、解釈することから生まれる場合が少なくありません。

日本で暮らすようになってから、その考えはさらに確かなものとなりました。大都市だけでなく地方を訪れる中で、地域社会や伝統産業、そして地元企業には、世界に伝えるべき素晴らしい物語が数多くあることを知りました。しかし、その価値や魅力を海外の人々へ十分に伝えられていないケースも少なくありませんでした。問題は品質ではありません。むしろ、その価値の多くは日本ならではの文化的背景や文脈に支えられており、海外の人々にはその前提が共有されていなかったのです。

そうした経験を重ねる中で、私は国際的なコミュニケーションとは、単に言葉を翻訳することではなく、「意味」を翻訳することなのだと実感するようになりました。この気づきこそが、SeiRogaiを立ち上げる上での重要な礎の一つとなっています。

Storytelling as Cultural Translation
ストーリーテリングという文化の翻訳

Samuel and I came to SeiRogai from very different professional backgrounds, but with surprisingly similar motivations.

Samuel spent many years in filmmaking, advertising and documentary production, believing that stories have the power to move people in ways that facts alone cannot. My own experience lay in international business, investment and cross-cultural communication, where I became increasingly interested in how ideas travel across cultures and what prevents them from doing so. Those perspectives naturally complemented one another.

We never wanted to create content simply because it looked impressive, nor were we interested in adopting technology for its own sake. Instead, we asked a much more practical question: how can stories help people genuinely understand places, communities and cultures that may initially feel unfamiliar?

Many people around the world are already familiar with Japan’s food, popular culture and iconic destinations. Yet some of the country’s richest stories remain relatively unknown: regional traditions, master craftsmen, local communities and the history that gives places their identity.

Information alone rarely captures that depth: A beautifully crafted piece of washi paper is simply paper until you understand the generations of knowledge behind it. A shrine becomes more meaningful when you hear the stories of the people who have cared for it over centuries. A regional town becomes memorable not because of its scenery alone, but because of the people who call it home.

Stories provide that context. They transform information into understanding, and understanding is often what inspires action.

サムミヨルと私は、それぞれ異なるキャリアを歩んできました。しかし、その根底にあった想いは驚くほど共通していました。

サムミヨルは長年にわたり、映画制作、広告、ドキュメンタリー制作に携わり、「物語には、事実だけでは動かせない人の心を動かす力がある」という信念を持ち続けてきました。一方、私は国際ビジネスや投資、異文化コミュニケーションの分野で経験を積む中で、アイデアや価値観がどのように文化を越えて伝わるのか、そして何がその伝達を妨げるのかという問いに強い関心を抱くようになりました。この二つの視点は、ごく自然に補い合うものでした。

私たちは、見栄えの良いコンテンツをつくること自体を目的にしたことはありません。また、テクノロジーを使うことそのものを目的にしたこともありません。私たちが常に問い続けてきたのは、もっと本質的で実践的な問いです。物語は、初めて触れる土地や地域、そして文化を、人々が本当の意味で理解するために、どのような役割を果たせるのだろうか。

世界には、すでに日本の食文化やポップカルチャー、そして象徴的な観光地を知る人が数多くいます。しかし、日本にはまだ十分に知られていない、かけがえのない物語が数多く残されています。地域に受け継がれる伝統、卓越した技を持つ職人、地域社会の営み、そして土地の個性を育んできた歴史です。

情報だけでは、その奥深さを十分に伝えることはできません。美しく漉かれた和紙も、その背景にある何世代にもわたる職人の知恵や技を知って初めて、本当の価値が見えてきます。神社も、何百年にもわたり守り続けてきた人々の物語を知ることで、その存在はより深い意味を持つようになります。地方の町も、美しい景色だけではなく、そこに暮らす人々の営みや想いを知ることで、心に残る場所へと変わります。

物語は、その背景や文脈を伝えてくれます。情報を理解へと変え、その理解こそが、人々の共感や行動を生み出すきっかけになるのです。

Media Technology with Purpose
目的を持ったメディアテクノロジー

As we shared in the Keido interview, GVT was never intended to be simply another platform for watching VR360 videos. Our ambition has always been to connect immersive experiences with meaningful real-world outcomes.

“We aspire to be a company that transforms experiences into visits, purchases and deeper understanding.”

That distinction is important because we have never viewed virtual experiences as a replacement for physical travel. Rather, they are designed to lower barriers to engagement—whether that means inspiring someone to visit a destination, explore a university, discover a traditional craft or better understand a local community before taking the next step.

Over the past year, we have been encouraged to see this philosophy reflected across an increasingly diverse range of projects. Working with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Chuo University and regional partners including the Keio Group, we explored how immersive campus and town experiences could help international students discover educational opportunities in Japan. Around 70% of platform visitors came from overseas, and some campaigns achieved click-through rates of up to 64%—far exceeding the sub-1% engagement typically seen in digital marketing. More importantly, participants reported stronger interest in both the universities and the Tama region, suggesting that immersive storytelling can influence genuine curiosity and decision-making rather than simply attracting attention.

経道のインタビューでもお話ししたように、GVTは単にVR360動画を視聴するための、もう一つのプラットフォームを目指して生まれたものではありません。私たちの目標は常に、没入型体験を意味のある現実世界での価値や成果へとつなげていくことでした。

「体験を、来訪・購買・理解につなげる会社」

この違いは、私たちにとって非常に重要です。私たちは、バーチャル体験を実際の旅行や現地体験の代替手段とは考えていません。むしろ、人々が次の一歩を踏み出すためのハードルを下げるものだと考えています。例えば、実際にその場所を訪れてみたいと思うきっかけになったり、大学についてより深く知る機会になったり、日本の伝統工芸に興味を持ったり、地域社会への理解を深めたりすること。そのような行動を後押しすることこそが、私たちの目指す役割です。

この1年を振り返ると、こうした理念がさまざまなプロジェクトを通じて形になり始めていることを、大変心強く感じています。東京都、中央大学、そして京王グループをはじめとする地域のパートナーの皆様とともに、没入型のキャンパス体験や地域体験を通じて、海外の学生が日本の教育機会や地域の魅力に触れられる取り組みを進めてきました。

その結果、プラットフォーム訪問者の約70％が海外からのアクセスとなり、一部のキャンペーンではクリック率（CTR）が最大64％に達するなど、一般的なデジタルマーケティングで見られる1％未満の水準を大きく上回る成果が得られました。それ以上に意義深かったのは、参加者から大学や多摩地域への関心が高まったという声が数多く寄せられたことです。このことは、没入型のストーリーテリングが、単に人々の注意を引くだけでなく、本物の興味や理解、そして意思決定にも影響を与え得ることを示しているのではないかと考えています。

The same principles have also guided our work beyond tourism and education. Through our collaboration with Kataoka Byoubu, one of Japan’s long-established traditional folding screen manufacturers, we have been exploring how documentary storytelling, VR360, and digital technologies can help preserve and communicate traditional craftsmanship for new domestic and international audiences. Rather than treating heritage as something static, the project asks how centuries of craftsmanship can remain relevant in a rapidly changing world by making the stories behind the artisans and their work more accessible.

この考え方は、観光や教育の分野にとどまらず、私たちのさまざまな取り組みの指針となっています。日本の老舗屏風メーカーである片岡屏風店との協業では、ドキュメンタリーストーリーテリング、VR360、そしてデジタル技術を活用し、日本の伝統工芸を国内外の新たな世代へ伝え、その価値を未来へつないでいく方法を模索してきました。私たちは、文化遺産を単に「守るべきもの」として捉えるのではなく、職人やその仕事の背景にある物語をより多くの人々に届けることで、何世紀にもわたって受け継がれてきた技や文化が、変化の激しい現代社会においても新たな価値を持ち続けられるのではないかと考えています。

We have also been honoured to receive approval from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for a five-year Business Innovation Plan to develop immersive VR services aimed at improving the quality of life of older adults. For me, this initiative represents one of the most meaningful applications of technology. Curiosity and the desire to explore do not disappear simply because mobility becomes more limited. If immersive experiences can help someone revisit cherished memories, discover somewhere they have always wanted to see, or simply spark conversation and connection, then technology is serving a purpose far beyond entertainment.

また、東京都より、高齢者のQOL向上を目指したVRサービスの展開に向けた「5年間の経営革新計画」の承認をいただいたことも、私たちにとって大きな誇りです。私にとって、この取り組みはテクノロジーの可能性を最も意義ある形で活かす取り組みの一つです。移動が以前より制限されるようになったとしても、好奇心や新しい世界を探求したいという想いが失われることはありません。没入型体験を通じて、大切な思い出の場所をもう一度訪れたり、いつか見てみたいと願っていた場所を発見したり、あるいは会話や人とのつながりを生み出すきっかけになったりすることができるのであれば、テクノロジーは単なる娯楽を超えた価値を提供できるのだと考えています。

Looking across these projects – from universities and regional revitalisation to traditional industries and healthy ageing – I am reminded that the technology itself is rarely the most interesting part. What matters is whether it helps people better understand a place, a culture, a craft or one another.

As AI rapidly transforms how we create and access information, I believe this human dimension will become even more important. AI will undoubtedly accelerate research, translation and content creation, and we actively explore how it can strengthen our own work. But while AI can explain what something is, it cannot fully convey why it matters. That still depends on context, empathy and authentic human stories—and those are qualities that technology should enhance, not replace.

こうして振り返ると、大学との連携、地域活性化、伝統産業、そして高齢者のウェルビーイングまで、私たちが携わってきたプロジェクトは多岐にわたります。しかし、どの取り組みにおいても、最も重要なのはテクノロジーそのものではありません。本当に大切なのは、その技術が、人々に土地や文化、ものづくり、そして人と人とのつながりをより深く理解してもらう助けとなっているかどうかだと考えています。

AIが情報の創出や活用のあり方を大きく変えつつある今、この「人間らしさ」の価値は、これまで以上に重要になっていくと私は考えています。AIは、調査や翻訳、コンテンツ制作を飛躍的に効率化し、私たち自身もその可能性を積極的に探求しています。しかし、AIが「それが何であるか」を説明することはできても、「なぜそれが大切なのか」を完全に伝えることはできません。そのためには、背景や文脈への理解、相手への共感、そして人が紡ぐ本物の物語が欠かせません。だからこそ、テクノロジーは人間の価値を置き換えるものではなく、その価値をより豊かに引き出す存在であるべきだと考えています。

Leadership, Learning and Building an Organisation
リーダーシップ、学び、そして組織づくり

As SeiRogai has grown, I have also found myself thinking differently about leadership.

One topic we discussed during the Keido interview was the importance of sharing judgement rather than simply giving instructions. In a startup environment, situations change too quickly for every decision to be captured in a manual. What matters is helping people understand the principles behind those decisions so they can exercise good judgement independently.

This is something I often encourage within our own team, particularly when mentoring interns and younger colleagues.

Technical skills are important, but curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to keep learning are equally essential. Some of the most valuable lessons in a startup come not from following a process perfectly, but from asking thoughtful questions, seeking feedback and learning to connect ideas across different disciplines.

That mindset also reflects the culture we hope to build at SeiRogai. We work across technology, education, tourism, media and international business, which means our team members are constantly exposed to new perspectives. Rather than staying within narrow specialisations, we encourage people to understand the broader context of the work and to remain open to continuous learning.

Looking back, I realise that the same qualities which matter in cross-cultural communication – curiosity, humility and empathy – also make for better leaders.

経道のインタビューでは、単に指示を伝えるのではなく、判断の背景や考え方を共有することの大切さについてもお話ししました。スタートアップの環境では、変化のスピードがあまりにも速く、すべての判断をマニュアルに落とし込むことはできません。大切なのは、一つひとつの判断の背後にある原則や考え方を理解してもらうことです。そうすることで、メンバー一人ひとりが自ら考え、適切な判断を下せるようになります。

これは、私がインターンや若いメンバーを指導する際にも、日頃から意識していることです。

技術的なスキルはもちろん重要です。しかし、それと同じくらい大切なのは、好奇心を持ち続けること、変化柔軟に対応すること、そして学び続ける姿勢です。スタートアップで得られる最も大きな学びは、決められた手順を完璧にこなすことだけではありません。良い問いを立てること、周囲からのフィードバックを素直に受け入れること、そして異なる分野の知識や経験を結び付けながら考える力を養うことにあると感じています。

そうした姿勢は、私たちがSeiRogaiで育んでいきたい組織文化にも通じています。私たちは、テクノロジー、教育、観光、メディア、そして国際ビジネスといった多様な分野にまたがって事業を展開しているため、チームメンバーは日々さまざまな視点や価値観に触れる機会があります。だからこそ、一つの専門分野だけにとどまるのではなく、仕事全体の背景や目的を理解し、常に新しいことを学び続ける姿勢を大切にしています。

振り返ってみると、異文化コミュニケーションにおいて重要だと感じてきた資質――好奇心、謙虚さ、そして共感力――は、そのまま優れたリーダーに求められる資質でもあるのだと実感しています。

Looking Ahead
これからに向けて

The pace of technological change today is extraordinary. Artificial intelligence, immersive media and digital platforms will continue to reshape how we communicate, learn and experience the world. Many of the tools we rely on today will undoubtedly look very different only a few years from now.

Yet I suspect that the most important principles will remain unchanged.

People will still seek authentic experiences.

Communities will still value meaningful relationships.

Stories will still shape how we understand one another.

And trust will continue to be built through genuine human connection.

As I compare the Keizaikai interview from last year with our recent Keido conversation, I am encouraged less by how much our company has changed than by how consistent its purpose has remained.

We did not set out simply to build a VR platform or a technology company. We wanted to help Japanese organisations communicate more effectively with international audiences, and to make it easier for people around the world to discover the richness of Japan beyond the familiar headlines and tourist attractions.

Today, that mission has expanded into education, regional revitalisation, healthy ageing and international collaboration, but the underlying philosophy is still the same. Technology should create opportunities for deeper understanding, not simply more information.

If our work helps someone discover a region they later choose to visit, inspires an international student to study in Japan, enables a traditional artisan to reach new audiences, or allows an older adult to experience the joy of exploration once again, then we have achieved something meaningful.

In the years ahead, I hope SeiRogai will continue building not only new platforms, but new connections – between cultures, generations, industries and communities. Those connections ultimately matter far more than the technology itself.

今日のテクノロジーの進化のスピードには、目を見張るものがあります。人工知能、没入型メディア、そしてデジタルプラットフォームは、これからも私たちがコミュニケーションを取り、学び、世界を体験する方法を大きく変えていくことでしょう。今、私たちが当たり前のように利用している多くのツールも、数年後には大きく姿を変えているに違いありません。

それでも、最も大切な原則は変わらないのではないかと私は考えています。

人はこれからも、本物の体験を求め続けるでしょう。

地域社会は、これからも意味のある人とのつながりを大切にしていくでしょう。

物語は、これからも私たちが互いを理解するための大切な役割を果たし続けるでしょう。

そして、信頼はこれからも、人と人との誠実なつながりの中で育まれていくでしょう。

昨年の経済界でのインタビューと、今回の経道での対談を振り返る中で、私が励まされたのは、会社がどれほど変化してきたかということ以上に、その目的や志が一貫して受け継がれているという事実でした。

私たちは、単にVRプラットフォームやテクノロジー企業をつくることを目指していたわけではありません。日本の企業や団体が海外の人々へより効果的にその価値を伝えられるよう支援し、世界中の人々が、日本の有名な観光地や広く知られた魅力だけではなく、その奥にある豊かな文化や地域の物語に出会うきっかけをつくりたい。その想いこそが、私たちの原点でした。

現在、その使命は教育、地域活性化、高齢者のウェルビーイング、そして国際連携へと広がっています。しかし、その根底にある理念は何一つ変わっていません。テクノロジーは、単により多くの情報を届けるためのものではなく、人々の理解をより深める機会を生み出すものであるべきだと、私たちは考えています。

私たちの取り組みが、誰かに地域を訪れるきっかけを与えたり、海外の学生が日本への留学を志す後押しになったり、伝統工芸の職人が新たな人々と出会う機会を生み出したり、あるいは高齢者が再び「旅する喜び」や「新しい世界に触れる楽しさ」を感じられるきっかけになったりするのであれば、それは私たちにとって大きな意味のある成果です。

これからもSeiRogaiは、新しいプラットフォームをつくるだけでなく、新しい「つながり」を築き続けていきたいと考えています。文化と文化、人と人、世代と世代、産業と産業、そして地域と世界を結ぶつながりです。私たちにとって、本当に価値があるのは、テクノロジーそのものではなく、それによって生まれる人と人とのつながりなのです。

December 2025, Aomori City

I remember waking up early on my first morning in Aomori, before the city fully stirred.

Outside, the world was quiet in a way that felt deliberate rather than empty. Snow softened the edges of buildings and roads, and even the sea seemed to breathe more slowly in the cold air. Standing by the window, I felt my usual internal rhythm begin to shift. This was not a place that rewarded speed or efficiency. It invited patience.

I was in Aomori City as a representative of SeiRogai, participating in a multi-day workcation through Minato City’s Partner Municipality Workcation Promotion Program. Officially, the purpose was policy dialogue, regional exchange, and exploration of future collaboration. Unofficially, it became something closer to a personal travel journal. A record of small observations, conversations, textures, and moments that quietly stayed with me long after I left.

Over the years, I have spent much of my professional life moving between countries, cultures, and regions. My work often involves translating local stories for global audiences, helping regions and companies articulate who they are and why they matter beyond their immediate borders. Every so often, a place reminds me that good translation begins not with language, but with humility. Aomori was one of those places.

青森で迎えた最初の朝、街が本格的に動き出す前に目が覚めました。

窓の外に広がる景色は、不思議なほど静かでした。ただ無音なのではなく、意図をもった静けさです。雪が建物や道路の輪郭をやわらかく包み込み、海でさえも、冷たい空気の中でゆっくりと呼吸しているように見えました。

その光景を前に立ち尽くしながら、自分の内側のリズムが少しずつ変わっていくのを感じていました。ここは、スピードや効率を競う場所ではありません。待つこと、向き合うことを自然に求めてくる土地なのだと思いました。

今回は、SeiRogaiの代表として、港区連携自治体ワーケーション促進事業を通じ、数日間青森市に滞在しました。公式な目的は、政策対話や地域交流、将来的な連携可能性の模索でしたが、実際には、それ以上に個人的な旅の記録に近いものとなりました。小さな気づきや会話、手触り、空気感、帰京してからも静かに心に残り続ける断片の集積です。

これまで私は、仕事を通じて国や文化、地域を横断しながら活動してきました。地域の物語を世界へどのように翻訳するか、価値をどう文脈化するか。その仕事の中で何度も感じてきたのは、本当の「翻訳」は言語から始まるのではなく、謙虚さから始まるということです。青森は、まさにそのことを思い出させてくれる場所でした。

Entering Aomori Slowly

ゆっくりと青森に入り込む

Aomori does not announce itself loudly. It reveals itself gradually, shaped by geography, climate, and history. Long winters, heavy snowfall, and distance from Japan’s political and economic centers have cultivated a culture that values endurance, mutual support, and quiet consistency.

As we moved through the city between meetings and site visits, I became increasingly aware of how deeply daily life here is structured around winter. Buildings are designed to withstand snow. Food prioritizes warmth and nourishment. Social rhythms slow down rather than resist the season.

This context matters deeply. Especially when we speak about regional revitalization, inbound tourism, or overseas expansion. Without understanding the conditions that shaped a place, any attempt to present it to the world risks becoming superficial or extractive.

青森は、声高に自己主張をする土地ではありません。地理や気候、歴史によって、少しずつ形づくられてきた場所です。長く厳しい冬、豪雪、そして日本の政治・経済の中心からの距離。そうした条件が、この地に「耐える力」や「支え合い」、そして静かな継続性を大切にする文化を育んできたのだと感じます。

会議や視察の合間に街を歩く中で、生活のあらゆる側面が「冬」を前提に設計されていることに気づかされました。雪に耐える建築、体を温める食事、無理に抗わず、季節に合わせて速度を落とす社会のリズム。

これは非常に重要な視点です。地方創生やインバウンド、海外展開を語る際、その土地を形づくってきた条件を理解しないまま外へ発信してしまうと、表層的で一方的なものになりかねません。青森は、そのことを静かに教えてくれる場所だと感じました。

Conversations with Aomori City Hall

青森市役所との対話から見えたもの

One of the core components of the workcation was a series of opinion exchange meetings with representatives from Aomori City Hall, including the Local Products Support Division and the Exchange Promotion Division.

What struck me most was the tone of these conversations. They were grounded and candid, without exaggeration or defensiveness. We spoke openly about the realities of inbound tourism, the difficulty of gaining international visibility, and the challenge of communicating Aomori’s appeal to audiences who may never have encountered the region before.

From my perspective, Aomori’s strength lies not in spectacle, but in depth. Its cultural assets do not demand attention at first glance. They reward time, curiosity, and context.

I shared how, at SeiRogai, we approach overseas promotion not by simplifying regional culture, but by carefully contextualizing it. Global audiences today are capable of nuance. They are less interested in idealized images and more drawn to understanding how people live, work, and maintain meaning in specific places..

Personally, I would like to support Aomori in sharing its stories, products, and values internationally in ways that preserve their integrity. Sustainable partnerships are built slowly, on trust and shared understanding rather than short-term metrics.

今回のワーケーションの中核となったのが、青森市役所の皆さまとの意見交換でした。あおもり産品支援課、交流推進課の方々との対話は、非常に率直で、地に足のついたものでした。

インバウンドの現状、海外での認知獲得の難しさ、青森の魅力を初めて触れる人々にどう伝えるか。誇張も防衛的な姿勢もなく、現実を共有する空気があったことが印象的でした。

私自身、青森の強みは「派手さ」ではなく、「深さ」にあると感じています。

時間をかけ、文脈を知ることで、はじめて伝わる魅力が、この土地には数多く存在します。
SeiRogaiとしても、文化を単純化するのではなく、その背景や積み重ねを丁寧に伝えることでこそ、海外の人々の心に届く形があると考えています。

個人的にも、青森の物語や価値を、その本質を損なわずに世界へ届けるお手伝いができればと強く思いました。持続的な連携は、短期的な成果ではなく、信頼と理解の積み重ねの上にしか生まれません。

Food as Climate, Memory, and Care

食に宿る気候と記憶

If Aomori’s culture can be felt anywhere, it is in its food.

The region’s cuisine reflects centuries of adaptation to long, severe winters. Preservation, ingenuity, and nourishment are recurring themes. Meals are designed not for indulgence, but for sustenance, warmth, and continuity.

During our stay, we joined a hands-on local cooking experience guided by an Aomori City Migration PR Ambassador. It felt less like a workshop and more like stepping into someone’s home.

We spent time shaping squid balls by hand, feeling the texture of the mixture and adjusting it through touch rather than measurement. We made iga-menchi, a beloved local dish made primarily from vegetables, born from frugality and creativity. There was laughter, conversation, and a shared focus that naturally emerges when people cook together.

Photographs from this experience capture hands mid-motion, ingredients in various stages, and expressions of quiet concentration. These images tell a story of process and participation rather than presentation.

Kenojiru, a traditional winter soup, offered deeper insight into Aomori’s history. Finely chopped vegetables simmer together into a dish that is nourishing, efficient, and practical. Historically, chopping vegetables this way allowed families to stretch limited ingredients and ensure even cooking during months when fresh food was scarce. It is a dish shaped by foresight and care.

青森の文化を最も強く感じられるのは、やはり食だと感じました。
この地の料理には、長く厳しい冬を生き抜くための知恵が、静かに凝縮されています。保存、工夫、栄養。そこには、贅沢さよりも、身体を温め、日々の暮らしを支えるための合理性が息づいています。

滞在中、青森市移住PR大使の方に案内いただき、家庭料理を一緒につくる体験をしました。教室というより、誰かの家に招かれたような感覚でした。

イカ団子を手で丸め、感触を確かめながら形を整える。野菜中心の郷土料理・いがめんちを仕上げていく。笑い声と会話が自然に生まれ、料理を通して少しずつ距離が縮まっていくのを感じました。写真には、途中段階の材料や、集中した手元の様子が多く残っています。完成品よりも「過程」が語るものの多さを感じました。

中でも、けの汁は特に印象深い一品でした。野菜を細かく刻み、無駄なく栄養を摂るための知恵。保存が難しかった時代に、限られた食材を最大限に活かそうとした先人の工夫が、その一杯の中に、静かに息づいているように感じられました。

Apples and Agricultural Stewardship

Aomori is widely known for its apples, but seeing the full range in person revealed a deeper story.

The prefecture cultivates over fifty varieties of apples, each with distinct qualities of sweetness, acidity, texture, and aroma. Displayed together, they form a quiet archive of agricultural knowledge accumulated over generations.

Looking at the apples laid out side by side, I was struck by the patience required to maintain such diversity. This is not mass production driven by efficiency alone. It is stewardship, experimentation, and long-term commitment to the land.

For overseas audiences, apples may appear simple. In Aomori, they represent resilience, adaptation, and the willingness to invest in the future over decades rather than seasons.

青森といえばりんご。その事実は知っていても、実際に50種以上の品種が並ぶ光景を見ると、その背景にある時間の厚みを実感します。

甘み、酸味、香り、食感。それぞれが異なり、用途も異なる。効率だけを追えば淘汰されてしまう多様性を、青森は守り続けてきた。それは単なる生産ではなく、土地への責任と未来への投資です。

海外では「りんご」はシンプルな存在に見えるかもしれません。しかし青森では、それは世代を超えた試行錯誤と忍耐の象徴なのです。

A Bowl Built by Choice: Aomori Nokkedon

自分で選ぶ贅沢な一杯：青森のっけ丼

The Aomori Nokkedon experience is not simply about assembling a meal, but about participating in a living local economy. At Aomori Gyosai Center, visitors are invited to move stall by stall, engaging directly with small-scale vendors who specialize in particular ingredients, fresh seafood, prepared dishes, local specialties. Each choice is intentional. Each interaction, however brief, becomes part of the meal itself.

What struck me most was how this system naturally supports small and family-run businesses. Rather than a single restaurant capturing all value, the Nokkedon model disperses it across the market. It encourages conversation, curiosity, and respect for craftsmanship. You ask questions. You listen to recommendations. You learn what is in season and why.

青森魚菜センターで体験した「青森のっけ丼」は、単なるグルメ体験ではありません。市場内を歩き、店ごとに声をかけ、食材を一つずつ選ぶ。その構造自体が、生きた地域経済に参加することだと感じました。青森魚菜センターでは、来場者が店から店へと巡り、それぞれ特定の食材や新鮮な魚介、惣菜、地元の名物を扱う小規模な出店者と直接やり取りしながら選んでいきます。一つひとつの選択には意味があり、たとえ短い会話であっても、そのやり取り自体が一杯の丼の一部となっていきます。

特に印象的だったのは、この仕組みが自然に小規模・家族経営の事業者を支えている点です。ひとつの飲食店に価値が集中するのではなく、のっけ丼のモデルは市場全体へと価値を分散させます。会話や好奇心、そして職人技への敬意を促す仕組みでもあります。質問をし、おすすめに耳を傾け、何が旬なのか、そしてその理由を学ぶ、そんな体験が、丼の味わいをいっそう深めてくれました。

This kind of experiential food culture cannot be replicated through mass tourism or standardized dining. It requires presence. It rewards engagement. In choosing ingredients one by one, you are not just consuming Aomori, you are participating in it. It is a quiet but powerful example of how regional economies can remain resilient by inviting visitors into their rhythms rather than packaging culture for passive consumption.

このような体験型の食文化は、マスツーリズムや画一的な飲食体験では再現できません。そこには「その場にいること」が必要であり、主体的に関わることでこそ価値が生まれます。

食材を一つひとつ選ぶ行為は、単に青森を消費するのではなく、青森に参加することにほかなりません。

それは、文化を受け身で消費するためにパッケージ化するのではなく、地域のリズムの中へ来訪者を招き入れることで、地域経済がしなやかに持続していく、その在り方を静かに、しかし力強く示す好例だと感じました。

Kogin-zashi Embroidery and the Quiet Language of Craft

こぎん刺しと、静かな手仕事の言語

Kogin-zashi is often introduced as a form of embroidery, but to experience it in Aomori is to understand that it was never decorative to begin with. It was survival.

Born in the Tsugaru region during the Edo period, Kogin-zashi emerged from necessity. Cotton was scarce and heavily regulated, reserved largely for the ruling classes. The farmers of northern Aomori, enduring long winters and biting winds, worked with what they had: hemp and ramie fabrics that offered little insulation. The answer was not excess, but ingenuity. By stitching dense geometric patterns with cotton thread over fragile cloth, they reinforced garments, blocked wind from slipping through the weave, and extended the life of clothing that could not easily be replaced.

Each stitch tightened the fabric. Each pattern thickened the coat. What we now admire as symmetry and beauty was, in its origin, a quiet form of resilience.

During our workshop, we created something simple, modest bookmarks completed within an hour. Yet even this small act invited imagination. As my hands moved through the repetitive rhythm of needle and thread, I found myself thinking of the women who would have done this work by firelight, night after night, embroidering coats for husbands, sons, parents. Not as art for display, but as protection, as care, as love rendered into cloth.

Later, wearing an antique Kogin-embroidered overcoat, its weight surprised me. It was heavier than it looked, not cumbersome, but grounding. You could feel the density of labor stitched into it. Time accumulated thread by thread. The coat did not ask to be admired. It asked to be relied upon.

In a world obsessed with speed, scalability, and optimization, Kogin-zashi speaks in another language entirely. It reminds us that some forms of value are cumulative, invisible, and slow. That durability is often the result of patience rather than innovation. And that craftsmanship, at its core, is an ethic of care.

こぎん刺しは「刺繍」と紹介されることが多いですが、青森で向き合うと、それが本来、装飾のためのものではなかったことがよく分かります。生きるための知恵だったのです。

江戸時代、津軽地方では綿が非常に貴重で、農民たちは麻布を使わざるを得ませんでした。厳しい寒さや風を防ぐため、木綿糸で幾何学模様を密に刺し、布を厚く、そして丈夫にしていきました。

一針一針が布を引き締め、隙間を塞いでいきます。美しさは結果であり、目的はあくまでも防寒と耐久性でした。

私たちは約1時間かけて栞を作る体験をしましたが、その単純な反復の中で、夜な夜な灯りの下、家族の衣を縫っていた女性たちの姿が自然と浮かびました。展示のためではなく、守るための手仕事です。

その後に身に着けた古いこぎん刺しの外套は、見た目以上に重みを感じました。その重さは、積み重ねられた時間と労力の密度そのものでした。頼られるために存在する衣なのだと思います。

スピードや拡張性が重視される現代において、こぎん刺しはまったく異なる価値観を静かに語りかけてきます。積み重ねること、見えにくい努力、そしてケアの倫理です。

Nebuta and Collective Energy

We also visited Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse, home to the illuminated floats used in the Aomori Nebuta Festival.

Nebuta is often described simply as a summer festival, but its significance extends far beyond that season. The floats depict warriors, deities, and figures from Japanese history and folklore. Yet what sustains Nebuta is not spectacle alone, but community participation.

Artisans, musicians, dancers, and entire neighborhoods contribute. The Haneto dance welcomes anyone willing to join. Culture here is not something to observe from a distance. It is something you step into.

For inbound tourism, this distinction matters. Visitors can sense when culture is lived rather than staged.

ねぶたの家ワ・ラッセでは、青森ねぶた祭で使用されるねぶた山車を間近で見ることができます。山車には、武将や神々、日本の歴史や民話に登場する人物が描かれています。　

ねぶたは夏祭りとして広く知られていますが、その本質は、一年を通じて続く共同体の営みにあります。ねぶたを支えているのは、単なる迫力や演出ではなく、地域の人々の参加です。

職人、囃子の演奏者、踊り手、そして地域全体が関わっています。ハネトの踊りは、参加する意志さえあれば誰でも受け入れてくれます。ここでは、文化は遠くから「見る」ものではありません。自らその中に「入っていく」ものなのです。

インバウンド観光において、この違いは非常に重要です。文化が演出されたものか、それとも日常として生きているものかは、訪れる人に自然と伝わります。

Aomori, Leadership, and the Long View of Place

場所が教えてくれる、リーダーシップのかたち

As someone who works across borders, industries, and cultures, I often move quickly. Projects overlap, cities blur, and even meaningful work can become abstract when viewed through screens and schedules. Aomori slowed that momentum in a way I did not anticipate. Experiencing this place as a representative of SeiRogai was not about extracting insights or packaging stories, but about proximity and presence. Aomori does not announce itself loudly. Its strength lies in accumulation: winters layered with snow, apples cultivated across generations, stitches reinforcing cloth, communities sustaining festivals long after economic logic says they should fade. It is a place that asks you to listen before you interpret.

This quiet endurance is visible everywhere. The Nebuta Festival, for all its spectacle, exists because of countless unseen hours of collective effort, passed down and renewed year after year. The same spirit lives in Aomori’s food culture, from home kitchens shaping squid balls and iga-menchi by hand, to the Gyosai Center’s Nokkedon stalls where you assemble your meal through direct exchanges with local vendors. You are not a passive consumer here. You participate. Choice by choice, conversation by conversation, value is created relationally. For me, this was a powerful reminder that sustainability is not a slogan, but a system built on trust, continuity, and mutual recognition.

From a leadership perspective, Aomori offers an important lesson for global work. In an era obsessed with speed, scale, and visibility, regions like this remind us that longevity is shaped by care, patience, and fidelity to place. The challenge is not how to make Aomori louder, but how to translate its depth without flattening it. Leaving Aomori, I carried with me a renewed sense that leadership, like Kogin-zashi, is reinforced slowly through repeated, deliberate acts. Some forms of value cannot be rushed. They must be stitched, season by season, into something that lasts.

国や業界、文化をまたいで仕事をする中で、私は無意識のうちに速度を上げてしまうことがあります。しかし青森は、その流れをそっと、静かに緩めてくれました。

SeiRogaiの代表としてこの地に立ちましたが、何かを「取りに来た」という感覚よりも、そこに「在る」ことの意味を深く考えさせられました。青森の強さは、幾重にも積もる雪の層、りんごの多様な品種、刺し重ねられた糸、そして受け継がれてきた祭りの中にあります。　

リーダーシップもまた、こぎん刺しのようなものだと感じました。派手さではなく、繰り返しと配慮によって強度が生まれていくものです。急ぐことのできない価値も、確かに存在します。

青森を後にしながら、その感覚を胸に刻みました。

時間をかけて縫い上げるものだけが、長く人を守るのだと。

As Singapore celebrates its 60th birthday, I’ve found myself reflecting deeply on what it means to be Singaporean – especially while living abroad in Japan. From visiting the stunning Dream Sphere Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, to meeting Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to Japan, and joining the overseas community for SG60 celebrations, this milestone year has been filled with moments that reminded me of home, belonging, and pride.

In this post, I share my experiences of celebrating SG60 in Japan – the beauty of the Singapore Pavilion, the inspiration of our leaders, and the warmth of the Singaporean community here. More than just a commemoration, SG60 is a chance to look forward: to imagine the next 60 years of Singapore’s journey, and to reaffirm how each of us, wherever we are, carries a piece of our “little red dot” with us.

シンガポールが建国60周年を迎えた今年、海外に暮らす一人のシンガポール人として、改めて「シンガポール人であること」の意味を深く考える機会となりました。

大阪・関西万博2025のシンガポールパビリオン「ドリーム・スフィア」を訪れたり、来日されたリー・シェンロン上級大臣（元首相）とお会いしたり、日本にいるシンガポール人コミュニティとSG60を祝ったり―この一年は、「故郷」「つながり」「誇り」を改めて感じる瞬間に満ちていました。

この記事では、日本で迎えたSG60の体験を通じて感じたことを綴っています。美しく象徴的なシンガポールパビリオン、リーダーたちからの言葉、そして日本に暮らすシンガポール人同士の温かな交流。SG60は、これまでの歩みを振り返るだけでなく、これからの60年をどう描いていくかを考える節目でもあります。たとえ世界のどこにいても、私たちはそれぞれの心の中に「小さな赤い点」（Little Red Dot）を大切に抱き続けているのです。

This Fall has been a deeply meaningful one for me. Singapore turned 60, and although I’m far away from home, I felt closer than ever to my roots.

この秋は、私にとって本当に意味深い季節になりました。シンガポールが建国60周年を迎えた今、母国から離れて暮らしているにもかかわらず、これまでになく自分のルーツに近づいたように感じています。

From the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, to meeting Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to Japan, and joining fellow overseas Singaporeans for SG60 celebrations, I’ve had so many opportunities to reflect on what being Singaporean means to me and how that identity continues to shape my journey here in Japan.

60 Years of Singapore: A Nation’s Journey

Growing up, I often heard stories about how Singapore had no natural resources, limited land, and an uncertain future at independence. Yet, our founding leaders and people believed in something bigger: the idea that through resilience, education, unity, and innovation, we could build not just a functioning country, but a thriving society.

子どもの頃、私はよく両親から建国当時のシンガポールの話を聞きました。独立を果たしたばかりの当時、シンガポールには天然資源がなく、土地も限られ、将来は不透明でした。それでも、初代の指導者たちと国民は、より大きな理想を信じていました。たとえ小さな国でも、「粘り強さ」「教育」「団結」、そして「革新の精神」によって、ただ機能する国家ではなく、豊かで活気ある社会を築くことができる、という信念です。

Now, 60 years later, Singapore is recognized globally for its stability, innovation, and ability to reinvent itself. Whenever I share about Singapore here in Japan, whether in professional settings or casual conversations, I see how others admire this spirit. And it always makes me proud.

それから60年。シンガポールは、安定性、イノベーション、そして時代に応じて自らを再発明する力によって、世界から高く評価されています。日本で仕事の場や日常の会話の中でシンガポールのことを話すたびに、多くの人がその精神に感銘を受けてくださるのを感じ、いつも誇らしい気持ちになります。

For me, SG60 is not only about celebrating how far we’ve come, but also about asking: how do we continue dreaming, building, and contributing in the years ahead?

私にとってSG60は、これまでの歩みを祝うだけではなく、「これからの未来に向けて、私たちはどんな夢を描き、どのように築き、どんな形で貢献していけるのか」を問いかける節目でもあります。

One of the highlights of SG60 for me was the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka : The Dream Sphere.

SG60の中でも特に印象に残っているのが、大阪・関西万博2025のシンガポールパビリオン「The Dream Sphere（ドリーム・スフィア）」です。

Walking up to it, I was struck by how beautiful and symbolic it was: a shimmering 17-metre sphere, covered with 17,000 recycled red discs, each one unique. To me, it felt like a metaphor for Singapore itself – many individuals, many stories, bound together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

目の前に現れた瞬間、その美しさと象徴性に心を奪われました。直径17メートルの球体は、17,000枚の再生素材による赤いディスクで覆われ、それぞれが少しずつ異なる形や質感を持っています。私にはそれが、まるでシンガポールそのものを表しているように感じられました。多様な人々と物語が重なり合い、互いに支え合いながら、ひとつの大きな輝きを生み出している、そんなメッセージが込められているようでした。

Inside, the pavilion was immersive, creative, and inspiring. It wasn’t just about showcasing achievements, but about imagining futures: sustainability, inclusion, innovation. Standing there, I felt both nostalgic and hopeful. Nostalgic for the Singapore I grew up in, hopeful for the Singapore that will continue to evolve – one that is bold enough to dream, and resilient enough to make those dreams a reality.

Another SG60 moment I will always remember was the chance to meet Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong during his visit to Japan.

もう一つ、忘れられないSG60の思い出は、日本訪問中のリー・シェンロン上級大臣にお会いする機会をいただいたことです。

He was in Osaka for the National Day celebrations at Expo and also met with Japanese leaders in Tokyo. Hearing him speak about Singapore-Japan relations and about how overseas Singaporeans remain a vital part of our nation’s fabric reminded me of how connected we still are, even far away.

リー氏は大阪万博でのシンガポールのナショナルデー記念行事に出席されたほか、東京では日本の政府関係者とも会談を行われました。その際にお話を伺う中で、彼が語ったシンガポールと日本の強固な関係、そして海外に暮らすシンガポール人が国家の大切な一部であることというメッセージが、心に深く響きました。離れて暮らしていても、私たちは決して切り離された存在ではない。むしろ、世界各地で活動するシンガポール人一人ひとりが、国の物語を広げていく大切な架け橋なのだ―そんな思いを改めて感じた瞬間でした。

There was something special about celebrating SG60 not just with fellow Singaporeans in Japan, but in the presence of a leader who has guided Singapore through so much. It made the milestone feel even more personal.

日本に住むシンガポール人の仲間たちと共にこの節目を祝うだけでなく、国を長年導いてきたリーダーのもとで祝えたことは、何より特別で、心に残る経験でした。SG60という節目が、ぐっと「自分ごと」として感じられた瞬間でもありました。

Living overseas, I’ve often wondered: how do you stay connected to home when you’re not physically there? For me, the answer has been the community.

海外に暮らしていると、ふと考えることがあります。「離れていても、どうやって“ふるさと”とつながり続けるのか？」私にとって、その答えは―コミュニティ（仲間）の存在でした。

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of joining and helping organize many Singapore Embassy and community events in Japan:

• International Women’s Day in Tokyo earlier this year, where I shared thoughts on womanhood, leadership, and cross-cultural identity.
• Singapore Innovation Night, which brought together entrepreneurs and innovators to showcase the creative spirit of Singaporeans abroad.
• Past occasions such as hosting the Harvard Club of Japan event in collaboration with EDB and SGN, or attending embassy receptions for National Day, and even meeting Singapore’s Speaker of Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, and other leaders visiting Japan.

これまで日本で暮らす中で、私はシンガポール大使館やシンガポール人コミュニティとともに、さまざまなイベントに関わる機会に恵まれてきました。

• 今年初めの東京での国際女性デーイベントでは、「女性としての生き方、リーダーシップ、異文化の中でのアイデンティティ」についてお話ししました。
• Singapore Innovation Nightでは、起業家やイノベーターが集まり、海外で活躍するシンガポール人の創造的な精神を共有しました。
• これまでにも、EDB（シンガポール経済開発庁）やSGN（Singapore Global Network）と共催したハーバードクラブ・オブ・ジャパンのイベントを主催したり、大使館主催のナショナルデーレセプションに出席したり、さらには国会議長、副首相、その他の政府要人との交流の機会もありました。

Each of these moments has been a reminder that even overseas, we carry Singapore with us – in how we connect, how we collaborate, and how we share our stories with the world.

こうした一つひとつの出来事が、私に改めて教えてくれました。たとえ海外にいても、私たちはシンガポールそのものを心の中に持ち続けているということ。それは、人とのつながり方に、協働のあり方に、そして自分たちの物語を世界にどう伝えていくかという姿勢に、自然と表れています。

What SG60 Means to Me
私にとってのSG60

This year, SG60 feels especially poignant. For me, it means:

1. Home is wherever we carry it – Even in Tokyo or Osaka, celebrating SG60 felt like being at home. Because home isn’t just geography; it’s the people, the stories, the values we hold.
2. We are part of Singapore’s journey – The diaspora isn’t just watching from the sidelines. We can contribute by building bridges, fostering exchanges, and sharing what makes Singapore special.
3. Dreaming forward – Just like the Dream Sphere, SG60 is about looking ahead. What dreams do we hold for Singapore’s next 60 years? For me, I hope for a Singapore that remains open, innovative, and compassionate and one where overseas Singaporeans continue to feel included and valued.

今年のSG60は、私にとってこれまで以上に深い意味を持つ節目となりました。
振り返ってみると、SG60が象徴するのは次の3つの思いです。

1. 「故郷」は、心に宿るもの
   東京でも大阪でも、SG60を祝う時間はまるでシンガポールにいるような温かさに包まれていました。なぜなら、「故郷」とは地理的な場所ではなく、共に笑い、語り合い、価値を共有する人々や物語そのものだからです。
2. 私たちはシンガポールの旅の一部
   海外に暮らす私たちは、決して「観客」ではありません。国の歩みに関わる存在として、橋を架け、交流を育み、シンガポールの魅力を世界に伝えることができます。小さな一歩でも、それが未来へと続く道を形づくっていくのだと信じています。
3. 未来への夢を描くこと
   「ドリーム・スフィア」のように、SG60はこれからの未来を見据える節目でもあります。次の60年、私が願うのは―シンガポールがこれからも開かれた社会であり続け、革新を恐れず、思いやりにあふれる国であること。そして、海外で暮らすシンガポール人がいつまでもつながりを感じ、誇りを持てる場所であることです。

Next year, 2026, marks 60 years of diplomatic ties between Singapore and Japan. I’m excited to see how these two nations, both close to my heart, will continue to collaborate, inspire, and grow together.

来年、2026年はシンガポールと日本の国交樹立60周年という記念すべき年を迎えます。
私の人生にとっても大切なこの二つの国が、これからも互いに学び合い、刺激し合いながら、新たな可能性を築いていく姿を見られることをとても楽しみにしています。

As for me, I feel grateful: to be Singaporean, to be part of the overseas community here in Japan, and to celebrate this milestone with so many others who share the same pride and love for our tiny red dot.

As someone who appreciates both culinary storytelling and cross-cultural creativity, I was delighted to be invited to preview this new menu. The concept celebrates Sydney’s relaxed yet sophisticated food culture while embracing the multicultural influences that define modern Australia. It is a cuisine shaped by diversity, migration, and an open-minded approach to flavors from around the world.

食のストーリーテリングと異文化の創造性、双方の魅力を大切にしている私にとって、今回の新メニューのプレビューに招待されたことは大変嬉しい体験でした。このコンセプトは、シドニーならではの洗練されたリラックス感あふれる食文化を称えながら、現代オーストラリアを象徴する多文化的な影響を取り入れています。多様性や移民文化、そして世界中の味を柔軟に取り入れる開かれた精神が息づく、まさに「多彩な味覚の共演」と言える料理です。

A Celebration of Multicultural Flavors

The dining experience began with the roast Ebisu kabocha pumpkin, beautifully paired with seeded fragrant chili oil, watercress, citrus yogurt, and hatomugi barley. The combination of sweet pumpkin, nutty barley, and a touch of spice created a perfectly balanced dish that captured the thoughtful simplicity of bills’ cooking style.

ダイニング体験の幕開けを飾ったのは、「恵比寿かぼちゃのロースト」。香ばしいチリオイルに、クレソン、シトラスヨーグルト、ハトムギを組み合わせた一皿です。かぼちゃの自然な甘みとハトムギの香ばしさ、そしてピリッとしたスパイスの余韻が絶妙な調和を生み出し、ビルズらしい“丁寧でシンプルな美味しさ”を見事に表現していました。

Next came the mushroom and water chestnut dumplings in a salted black bean and white soy dressing. This dish quickly became one of my favorites. The dumplings were light yet full of texture, with the crisp water chestnuts contrasting the tender filling. The savory dressing tied everything together, offering a subtle nod to Asia’s culinary influence on Australian cuisine.

次に登場したのは、「マッシュルームとクワイの蒸し餃子　豆鼓と白醤油のドレッシング」。この一皿はすぐにお気に入りのひとつとなりました。餃子は軽やかな口当たりながらも食感が豊かで、シャキッとしたクワイの歯ごたえが、やわらかな具材と見事なコントラストを描きます。豆鼓と白醤油の香ばしいドレッシングが全体をまとめ上げ、オーストラリア料理に息づくアジアの食文化へのオマージュを感じさせる味わいでした。

The orecchiette with shiitake XO, ricotta, capers, kalamata olives, and bonito pangrattato was another highlight. Here, Italian comfort meets Asian umami. The rich depth of shiitake and bonito balanced beautifully with the creamy ricotta and briny olives, creating a dish that felt both familiar and exciting.

次に印象的だったのは、「しいたけXOソースのオレキエッテ　リコッタ、ケーパー、カラマタオリーブ、鰹パン粉添え」。ここでは、イタリアのコンフォートフードがアジアの旨味と出会います。しいたけと鰹の奥深い風味が、リコッタのまろやかさやオリーブの塩味と絶妙に調和し、どこか親しみを感じながらも新鮮な驚きのある一皿でした。

To finish, the choux bun with orange and fennel seed craquelin, citrus curd, and crème fraîche was exquisite. The fennel added a gentle spice that complemented the bright citrus curd, resulting in a dessert that was light, aromatic, and perfectly refreshing.

最後を飾ったのは、「シュー・ブン　オレンジとフェンネルシードのクッキー生地　シトラスカードとクレームフレーシュ添え」。フェンネルのほのかなスパイスが、爽やかなシトラスカードの酸味を引き立て、軽やかで香り高く、心地よい余韻を残すデザートでした。繊細な風味のバランスが際立ち、まさに食後にふさわしい上品な一皿です。

Refreshing and Refined Beverages

No visit to bills is complete without trying their signature drinks. The mandarin and tarragon soda was a standout. Crisp and vibrant, it captured the brightness of citrus with a hint of herbal depth from the tarragon. It felt like sunshine in a glass – refreshing and uplifting.

ビルズを訪れたなら、シグネチャードリンクを味わわずに帰ることはできません。中でも印象的だったのは「マンダリン＆タラゴンソーダ」。みずみずしく爽やかな一杯で、柑橘の明るい香りにタラゴンのハーバルな奥行きが重なり、まるでグラスの中に陽光を閉じ込めたような、心まで晴れやかになる味わいでした。

For something more indulgent, the Paper Plane cocktail (a modern Australian favorite) was exceptional. Originally created by Sam Ross, an Australian bartender from Melbourne, the cocktail was first developed in 2008 for the menu at The Violet Hour, a renowned bar in Chicago. Ross, who was then working at the pioneering New York cocktail bar Milk & Honey, crafted the Paper Plane as a modern riff on the classic Last Word cocktail, aiming for perfect balance and approachability.

Elegant yet unpretentious, it embodies the best of the modern Australian cocktail sensibility – sophisticated but relaxed – and perfectly complements the spirit of bills Origin, where global influences meet laid-back Australian flair.

For example, the chrysanthemum greens and green kimchi pancake takes inspiration from both Vietnamese banh xeo and Korean pancakes while highlighting Japan’s seasonal chrysanthemum greens. The bills plate showcases locally sourced produce such as Hiruzen Dairy gouda, perilla oil labneh, and seeded rye crispbread, offering a unique reflection of regional diversity.

During my recent trip to Thailand, I had the privilege of joining a fireside chat with Khun Kirit Shah, Chairman of GP Group, together with fellow Harvard alumni in Bangkok. It was an intimate gathering, yet one filled with wisdom, laughter, and thought-provoking stories from a man who has spent more than five decades building one of Thailand’s most respected business groups.

先日のタイ訪問の際、私は GPグループ会長のキリット・シャー氏 と、バンコクでのハーバード同窓生の集まりでファイヤーサイドチャットに参加する機会をいただきました。小規模で親密な会でしたが、そこには知恵、笑い、そしてタイを代表するビジネスグループを50年以上にわたり築き上げてきた人物から語られる、数々の示唆に富んだストーリーが溢れていました。

Hearing Khun Kirit reflect on how he transformed his family’s modest grain trading business into a diversified conglomerate spanning shipping, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, aviation, and technology was nothing short of inspiring.

When I think back to my first travels around Japan, I honestly had no idea just how much those
experiences would change the course of my life.

I wasn’t fluent in Japanese, didn’t have a clear plan, and definitely didn’t imagine I’d end up building a

The Allure of Japan Discovered in the Countryside

地方で出会った日本の魅力

As I visited small towns, met locals, and learned about the stories behind traditions, crafts, and places—some of which even Japanese people don’t always know about—I found myself falling in love with a side of Japan that felt incredibly deep and meaningful.

地方の小さな町を巡って、そこで暮らす人たちと出会い、伝統文化や工芸、土地にまつわるさまざまなお話を聞く中で、時には、日本の方でもあまり知らないようなことにも触れることがありました。そんな知られざる日本の奥深さや、そこに込められた意味や想いに、私はどんどん心を惹かれていきました。

That’s what inspired me to co-found SeiRogai together with Samuel: to create a platform that could capture and share these stories with the world, using technology like virtual reality and documentary-style content to bring people closer to Japan in ways that feel personal and real.

この体験が、SeiRogaiを共同創業するきっかけとなりました。バーチャルリアリティやドキュメンタリースタイルの映像など、テクノロジーを活用して、日本の魅力をもっと「リアルに」「心に届く形で」世界中の人々に伝えたいという思いから始まったのです。

This journey has been filled with both challenges and unforgettable moments. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way—from mentors and collaborators, to the amazing artisans and local communities we’ve worked with. I especially want to thank my partner and co-founder, Samuel Yuen, whose vision, creativity, and partnership have been essential in building SeiRogai from the ground up.

I recently had the honor of being interviewed by Keizaikai Magazine for their “San-San Talk” series. For those unfamiliar, Keizaikai is one of Japan’s respected business publications, established in 1964. It’s known for its in-depth interviews with business leaders and its focus on the people behind the companies, rather than just the numbers. Being featured in such a publication was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our journey and share the mission behind SeiRogai.

先日、『経済界』の「San-San Talk」シリーズで私たちの取り組みについて取り上げていただきました。『経済界』は1964年創刊の歴史あるビジネス誌で、企業の業績だけでなく、その背後にいる「人」にフォーカスした深いインタビューで知られています。そんな由緒あるメディアに掲載されたことは、これまでの歩みを振り返り、SeiRogaiの想いを語る貴重な機会となりました。

In this interview, I was joined by Keizaikai President and CEO Ms. Yumi Sato as the interviewer. We
discussed the founding story of SeiRogai, my passion for Japanese culture, and our efforts to support
regional revitalization and traditional craftsmanship.

今回の対談では、『経済界』代表取締役社長・佐藤有美氏を聞き手に迎え、SeiRogaiの創業スト
ーリーをはじめ、日本文化への想い、そして地方創生や伝統工芸支援への取り組みについて語
りました。

This quote from the article captures a big part of why I do what I do. In the interview, I reflected on the
journey of co-founding SeiRogai, my connection to Japanese culture, and our mission to share untold
stories from local communities through technology and storytelling.

この言葉は、インタビューでお話しした中でも、特に私の想いを表している一節です。SeiRogai
のこれまでの道のり、そしてなぜ日本文化や地方の物語に惹かれているのか…そんな想いを語る
機会をいただけたことに、心から感謝しています。
