<p>As Japan’s heatwave brings record-breaking temperatures, a beach or island getaway is at the top of everyone’s wish-list! Did you know that Enoshima, a small island just slightly west of Kamakura, boasts some of the closest beaches to Tokyo? From Shinjuku Station, it is only about 1 hour away!&nbsp;</p>

<p>My colleague&nbsp;Iwami-san had been recommending this island to me for some time, so finally made it there for a day trip with my brother. Read on for photos and tips on what to do in Enoshima!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="about-enoshima"><strong>About Enoshima</strong></h2>

<p>Originally a religious site owned by the government&nbsp;(the island is the scene of the&nbsp;<em>Enoshima Engi</em>, a history of shrines on Enoshima written by the Japanese Buddhist monk Kōkei in 1047 AD), Enoshima is now a popular seaside tourist destination.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><a href="http://www.s-n-p.jp/enoshima" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener external" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="external">「江の島」</a>は、神奈川県藤沢市にある島です。

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="getting-to-enoshima"><strong>GETTING TO ENOSHIMA</strong></h2>

<p>We took the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Katase Enoshima Station, the closest station to Enoshima itself.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><tbody><tr><td class="has-text-align-center" data-align="center"><strong><u><a href="http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/enoshima_kamakura/" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass</a></u></strong><br>I would recommend getting the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/enoshima_kamakura/" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="external noopener noreferrer">Enoshima-Kamakura Free Pass</a>&nbsp;(1,470 yen, purchase at Shinjuku station) which includes unlimited use of the Odakyu trains between Shinjuku, Fujisawa, and Enoshima as well as the Enoden trains between Fujisawa (Enoshima) and Kamakura for the day. Additionally, this pass gets you discounts for entrance tickets to various attractions!<br>(Note: if you choose to ride Romancecar instead of the regular Odakyu line, the Free Pass only covers the base fare and you will still have to pay an additional 620 yen limited express surcharge for reserved seating.)<br>&nbsp;</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="851" height="638" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima2a327.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4425" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima2a327.jpg 851w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima2a327-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima2a327-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>On the bridge towards Enoshima&nbsp;(江の島), an island&nbsp;just off the coast but connected by bridge with the mainland.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima30694-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4426" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima30694-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima30694-225x300.jpg 225w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima30694.jpg 1079w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>The island offers a variety of attractions, including a shrine, park, observation tower and caves.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="food-amp-sightseeing"><strong>FOOD &amp; SIGHTSEEING</strong></h2>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima4e878-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4427" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima4e878-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima4e878-225x300.jpg 225w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima4e878.jpg 1079w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>There are also plenty of stores for shopping and food! This is the main branch of “Asahi”&nbsp;「あさひ」for barbeque rice crackers (<em>maruyaki senbei</em>丸焼きたこせんべい), where an octopus or prawns are fully pressed into a cracker. I picked the large prawn (<em>Daikairō</em>,&nbsp;大海老) cracker, and it comes out piping hot! A delicious snack!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima5d62d-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4428" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima5d62d-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima5d62d-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima5d62d-768x576.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima5d62d.jpg 1439w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>You can walk next to the water at Kagoshigaguchi. This rocky area was the result of the Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and it is now a popular beach fishing point. A lovely walk under blue skies.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima_98a8e-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4432" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima_98a8e-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima_98a8e-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima_98a8e-768x576.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima_98a8e.jpg 1439w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

The water is beautiful!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="863" height="647" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima63288.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4429" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima63288.jpg 863w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima63288-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima63288-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 863px) 100vw, 863px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>If you go to Enoshima, you cannot miss out on the fresh seafood such as Chirasu (whitebait) and Sazae (Turban Shell)!</p>

<p>There are many restaurants on the island that give you a great view overlooking the sea. For chirasu don, you have two styles of rice bowls to choose from, either raw sashimi style&nbsp;(nama-chirasu,&nbsp;生しらす)&nbsp;or kettle boiled (kama-age chirasu,&nbsp;釜あげ<em>シラス).&nbsp;</em>We tried both!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>By the way, raw chirasu rice bowls are not available throughout the year, as it is prohibited to catch whitebait from January – March. The best season for raw chirasu is April – May, July, and October. October is said to be the most delicious time for chirasu in Enoshima.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="758" height="568" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima720c3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4430" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima720c3.jpg 758w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima720c3-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Blue Enoshima Beer was quite refreshing!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="more-sightseeing"><strong>MORE SIGHTSEEING</strong></h2>

<p>ランチの後、<a href="http://www.fujisawa-kanko.jp/spot/enoshimaiwaya.html" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener external" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="external">「江の島岩屋」</a>へ行きました。 </p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>After lunch, we visited the Iwaya Caves, caves made by natural erosion. Dimly lit, the caves evoke a mysterious air. There are two caves: Daiichi Iwa-ya (Big Cave) with a depth of 152m, and a second smaller cave of 56m.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima89bc1-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4431" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima89bc1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima89bc1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/enoshima89bc1.jpg 1079w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>After receiving your candle at the entrance, begin exploring the caves!</p>

<p>There are some narrow paths throughout the cave that you can explore. A peaceful yet exciting experience recommended for all ages, especially couples and families with kids!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="613" height="818" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/kamakura_big_buddha1a79.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4784" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/kamakura_big_buddha1a79.jpg 613w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/kamakura_big_buddha1a79-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>To finish of the day, we rode the Enoden to Hase Station (長谷駅)&nbsp;in Kamakura to visit the Big Buddha statue.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="last-thoughts"><br><strong>*~* Last Thoughts *~*</strong></h2>

<p>Next time, I plan to visit Hakone. I have been to Hakone twice so far, but as a foreigner, I did not know the area very well, and both times I only visited the nearby areas of Hakone Yumoto station. According to Iwami-san, this is only the starting point of visiting Hakone! Hence, I promised to go back and make a proper visit soon.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

その経験で、「<a href="https://rachelleng.com/yakuzen-cooking-class" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="internal">薬膳教室 Yakuzen Cooking Class</a>」について、書きました。

<p>Yakuzen refers to Japanese cooking of Chinese herbal medicine dishes (药材 in Chinese). Traditional Chinese medicine and herbal ingredients are central to yakuzen meals, rather than any specific cooking styles. Emphasis is placed on the principle of yin and yang （阴阳）, the two opposite forces in the universe that complement each other, and the five elements that reflect traditional Chinese philosophy &#8211; metal, water, wood, fire and earth (which interestingly, are also used to refer to the days of the week in Japanese and Korean). Additionally, five vital internal organs are linked with the five elements (and seasons): liver to wood (Spring), heart to fire (Summer), spleen to earth (late Summer), lungs to metal (Autumn) and kidneys to water (Winter). Meals are said to rebalance qi, blood and body fluids, which yakuzen promotes as being essential to maintaining the delicate equilibrium of yin and yang in our body.</p>

<p>With Spring around the corner, we must be more watchful of the liver. After a harsh winter, the body gets more active during Spring but the liver is easily affected by temperature fluctuations. A liver out of balance may result in a whole host of problems such as: irritability, fatigue, stress, hypertension, headache, insomnia, dizziness, loss of vision, etc.</p>

<p>Bitter Spring vegetables like bitter gourd, edible wild plants, celery, and shiso leaves have a detoxifying effect and sooth irritation of the liver, and is recommended during the Spring season. Moreover, sweet vegetables in season like pumpkin and carrots can help with digestion.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:57px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p></p>

<p>Raw chocolate has been a latest health food trend. We used a special chocolate mixer to simply mix Cacao Beans with Coconut Oil, and managed to make some delicious raw chocolate dip for dessert! (Goes great with dried fruit and nuts &#8211; we used orange and ginger strips!)</p>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_rachel_leng_4376a-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6035" title="" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_rachel_leng_4376a-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_rachel_leng_4376a-225x300.jpg 225w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_rachel_leng_4376a.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption><em>Making raw chocolate dip for dessert!&nbsp;</em>☆<br><em>私も生チョコレートのデザートを作ってみました！ </em></figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>My favorite dish was Beef Tendon Soup. Since young, I have always liked soup and Beef Tendon Soup is a healthy and great dish to relieve the stress that may come along with the warmer Spring weather. Eye twitching and other involuntary muscle twitches are common during this season (especially those who get Spring allergies), and Beef Tendon Soup is perfect for warming the body after a cold winter and replenishing energy~ &nbsp;</p>

<p>In Tokyo, you will likely have to reserve the tendon from the butchers&#8217; in advance (or request for it early in the morning) as they only bring in very little everyday. Often, they will also not have the tendon on display, so you will have to ask for it &#8212; 牛筋（牛すじ or&nbsp;<em>gyu-suji</em>&nbsp;in Japanese). &nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:58px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6036" title="" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f-300x300.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f-150x150.jpg 150w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f-768x768.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/yakuzen_soup543f.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Beef tendon soup &#8211; you can dip the&nbsp;<em>bing&nbsp;</em>crackers in soup as a way of eating!
