♡Happy Valentines Day! ♡

In Japan, there is a strong tradition of women giving chocolates to men on Valentines Day. There are two types of chocolates, “Giri-choco” (義理チョコ；obligation chocolate), and “Honmei-choco” (本命チョコ；favor chocolates). Giri-choco is meant to be for friends, colleagues, bosses, and close male friends. “Giri” means obligation hence this Giri-choco has no romance involved. On the other hand, Honmei-choco is given to a boyfriend, lover, or husband with true love. There is also a custom for Japanese women to prepare the Honmei-choco by themselves (the belief is that it does not represent true love if they simply purchase them ready-made). Nearing Valentines day, all the department stores, shops, and even grovery stores will start putting out large displays of chocolate (often heart shaped). Stores also get packed with a large variety of chocolate-making cooking tools and of course, women!

Last year was my first experience of “Japanese Style Valentines Day,” and I learned of the many different kinds of names and categories for chocolate-giving practices. For example, in addition to obligation and favor chocolates, some examples are: 「友チョコ」(tomo-choco or Friend Chocolates, when girls give their friends chocolates);「逆チョコ」(gyaku-choco or Reverse Chocolates, when guys give girls chocolates on Valentines Day); 「自己チョコ」(jiko-choco or Self Chocolates, buying chocolates for self-consumption); and 「強敵チョコ」(kyoteki-choco or Fierce Enemy Chocolates, when guys give other guys chocolates).

This year, I bought about 30 chocolates to give out as Giri-choco or Obligation Chocolates to my colleagues! To avoid the super hectic chocolate shopping rush, I ordered them ahead of time to be delivered. Nonetheless, they were pretty heavy to carry to work on Valentines Day…

Looking forward to White Day one month later on March 14, where guys have to return the favor to the ladies!

For the 30 boxes of chocolates, I had 2 different kinds of wrapping 🙂

♡

In my impression, Valentines Day should still be paired with roses (rather than chocolates)~
