「梯子」は、成功へのキャリアパスを表現するためによく使われる典型的な比喩ですね。しかし、変化する現代社会では、どのようなステップが成功につながるのか、また、どのようなチャンスが訪れるのか、予測することはできません。COVID-19の大流行は、この現実を多くの人に明らかにしました。このように、コロナ禍によって、多くの人々は、キャリアアップのために、より名誉ある肩書きやより高額な報酬を得るという単純な道ではなく、岩壁を一歩づつ登るようにキャリアアップをすることが一般的になってきています。

Have you been rock climbing before? Recently, I was in Krabi, Thailand, which is famous for its dramatic limestone mountains making it one of the top rock-climbing destinations in the world.

皆様はロッククライミングをしたことがありますか？最近、私はタイのクラビに行ってきました。クラビは石灰岩の山で有名で、世界でも有数のロッククライミングの盛んなところです。

Rock climbing is not easy. At the start, I was determined to make it to the top with the straightest path possible. However, I soon realized that was not the solution. Especially when climbing for the first time, I relied heavily on the cues from my instructor as well as friends on the ground to guide me to the right footholds. Often, from their vantage point, they would be able to point out the right nooks and crannies, even those that I could not see, to reach for and continue climbing.  

ロッククライミングは簡単ではありません。最初は、できるだけまっすぐな道で頂上を目指そうと思っていました。しかし、それでは解決しないことにすぐに気がつきました。特に初めてのクライミングでは、インストラクターや地上にいる友人の合図を頼りに、正しい足場へ誘導してもらうことが多かったです。度々、見晴らしの良い地点から私が見えなくてもありとあらゆる所で、私がクライミングを続けられるように誘導してくれました。

I was struck by how the actual experience and process of climbing a rock wall did appropriately reflect the pursuit of a career in our modern society. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the world, it also instigated many, myself included, to reevaluate my professional trajectory and consider new directions.

岩壁を登るという実際の体験とそのプロセスが、現代社会におけるキャリアの追求を適切に反映していることに驚かされたのです。COVID-19が世界を混乱させましたが、私を含め、多くの人が自分の仕事人生を見直し、新しい方向性を考えるきっかけとなりました。

Some of you may know that I had been working at a Japanese private equity fund leading business development on the investment management team while at the same time also co-founded a media production company in Tokyo. Since last year, I have focused more of my time attention on my own company instead. As a media company specializing in the tourism industry and international content, we were hard hit by the travel bans due to COVID-19. My partner and I had established the company in 2019 in anticipation of the Olympics and were looking forward to also getting started on filming new original content with our international production partners. Unfortunately, the coronavirus threw us a huge curveball. With international travel to Japan still restricted now even after 2 years since the first state of emergency declaration, all of our projects have been cancelled or require re-development. Hence, I have been quite preoccupied with pivoting our business plans – it has been a challenging time, but I have loved the opportunity to learn so many new things every day. After putting in so much hard work to learn about and develop businesses in a new industry, it truly makes the fruits of your labor all that much sweeter.

ご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますが、私は日本の投資会社で投資運用チームの事業開発を担当する傍ら、東京でメディア制作会社を共同設立していました。昨年からは、より多くの時間を自分の会社に注いでいます。観光産業と海外コンテンツに特化したメディア企業である当社は、コロナ禍による渡航禁止措置で大きな打撃を受けました。私とビジネスパートナー達は、オリンピックを見越して2019年に会社を設立し、海外の制作パートナー達と一緒に新しいオリジナルコンテンツの撮影にも着手することを楽しみにしていました。しかし残念ながら、コロナは私たちに大きなカーブボールを投げてきました。最初の緊急事態宣言から2年経った今でも日本への海外渡航は制限されており、私たちのプロジェクトはすべてキャンセルされるか、再構築が必要となっています。そのため、私はビジネスプランの見直しで頭がいっぱいでしたが、新しい業界を知り、今はビジネスを展開するために苦労した分、その苦労が報われるような気がします。

Over the last year and a half, there have been a lot of tears and frustrations with setbacks, but also a lot of joy and relief with every win, no matter how small. I personally experienced and began to understand why we should think of our career as climbing a rock wall with lateral movements, rather than a ladder.

この1年半、挫折で泣いたり悔しい思いをしたこともありましたが、どんなに小さな勝利でも喜びや安堵を感じることもたくさんありました。私自身、キャリアを梯子ではなく、水平移動で岩壁を登るように考えるべき理由を体験し、理解し始めました。

Moving forward is the most important to achieving new heights – Even if you do not know specifically how to get to your vision, taking charge of your own life and driving yourself forward is the essential action to get you there. When climbing a rock wall, you will not likely be able to see the top very clearly. Yet, as long as you keep moving, you will get there eventually.

高みを目指すには、前進することが何よりも大切です。たとえビジョンに到達するための具体的な方法が分からなくても、自分の人生を自分でコントロールし、前進することが、そこに到達するために不可欠な行動なのです。岩壁を登るとき、頂上はあまりよく見えないかもしれません。でも、前に進んでいれば、いずれはそこに到達できます。

Be careful not to wait too long. If you tire yourself out while hanging on and waiting, you will not have the same level of energy to be bold and to take action up a new path.

長く待ち過ぎないように注意しましょう。ぶら下がって待っている間に自分を疲れさせてしまうと、大胆に新しい道を切り開くための行動を起こすエネルギーがなくなってしまうからです。

It is okay to take a break from the climb (such as taking a career break due to personal or family issues) and enjoy the view a little. Taking the time to refresh and reflect a little before climbing again can do wonders for helping you achieve the next level when you return to the wall. You may even decide to climb up a totally different part of the wall (e.g., changing jobs or industries), and may discover that area to be better suited for your skills!

個人的な状況や家族の関係でキャリアを中断するなど、クライミングから離れることは問題ありません。再び登る前に少しリフレッシュして考える時間を持つことは、壁に戻ったときに次のレベルを達成するために大いに役立ちます。また、転職や業種転換などで、全く別の場所を登ることになり、その場所の方が自分のスキルに合っていることに気づくかもしれません。

Thanks to a good friend, Mr. Masahiro Yamigawa, who is currently teaching classes at Rikkyo University, I had the opportunity to give a guest seminar to his students where I shared 3 perspectives from my recent experiences. Masa was one of the first friends I had met in Japan through an introduction from a mutual friend in South Korea. He has always been generous and kind to share his advice and perspective, and is someone whom I admire deeply for his dedication to his family and ability to adapt to complex situations. I was humbled that he invited me to speak to his students.

現在、立教大学で教鞭をとっている友達の 山際 正洋さんのおかげで、彼の学生たちにゲスト・セミナーを行う機会があり、私の最近の経験から3つの視点を共有することができました。山際さんは、韓国での共通の友人からの紹介で、私が日本で出会った最初の友人の一人です。彼はいつも寛大で親切にアドバイスや見解を教えてくれ、家族への献身や複雑な状況への適応能力など、私が深く尊敬している人です。その彼が、自分の生徒たちに話をするために私を招待してくれたことに、私は身の引き締まる思いがしました。

Like climbing the rock wall, career development is a unique journey and process. Promotions are not the only way to advance your career. In fact, in my experience, the leaders who transitioned to different industries and were able to leverage lateral thinking to jump in their careers, were able to build deeper knowledge and stronger relationships. Moving sideways is not a failure or a setback, but simply an alternate route. Avoid the trap of thinking that the only measures of career success are to climb the corporate ladder for a better title or higher salary in a stable job. Instead, focus on what you can learn wherever you are, and look for the opportunities that are available at every stage of your career and life journey. Ultimately, maintaining an open mindset that focuses on constantly learning will take you a long way—we can all learn and try something new, regardless of how much knowledge, success and experience we believe we already have accumulated.

最後に。。。

岩壁を登るように、キャリア開発は独自の旅とプロセスです。キャリアアップの方法は昇進だけではありません。実際、私の経験では、異業種に転身し、「Lateral Thinking（ラテラルシンキング：既成概念に捉われない思考）」を活用してキャリアをジャンプさせたリーダーは、より深い知識とより強い人間関係を築くことができたのです。横道に逸れることは、失敗や後退ではなく、単なる代替ルートに過ぎないのです。キャリアの成功の唯一の尺度は、安定した仕事でより良い肩書きや高い給料を求めて会社の梯子を上ることだと考える罠は避けてください。その代わり、どこにいても学べることに焦点を当て、キャリアと人生の旅のあらゆる段階で利用できる機会を探しましょう。最終的には、常に学ぶことに焦点を当てたオープンな考え方を維持することで、長い道のりを歩むことができるのです。

プーケットにある「Tiger　Kingdom・タイガーキングダム」（虎の王国）という観光スポットです。そこでは、虎と一緒の珍しい写真が取れます。

タイガーキングダムのことを初めて聞くと、信じられませんでした。でも、行った時、自分が正真正銘、本物の虎と一緒に遊びました。

「虎に触れることなんて、トレーナーさんにならない限り無理なのですが・・・？」
 

他の所では、虎は檻の中にいって、そして私たち人間は、檻の外から虎たちの姿を眺めるのが当たり前でしょう。

その常識を覆す、檻の中に入り、さらに虎とスキンシップが取れるのは、タイガーキングダムの魅力です。さまざまな成長過程の虎がトレーナーさんに育てられており、鎖でつながれていない子供の虎や大人の虎とのふれあいを体験できました。プーケット動物園でも虎と一緒に写真を撮れるコーナーがありますが、タイガーキングダムで初めて虎を撫でたので、とてもスリリングな経験でした。檻の中で自分で写真が撮れますが、またオプションでカメラマンをつけて虎と一緒に写真撮影ができます。

下の写真のような可愛い表情を見ると、虎もやはり猫の仲間なんだなぁと意識しますね。
 

もしタイに行く機会があれば、是非タイガーキングダムに行ってみてください。日本では見たことないような、まるで猫のような虎たちがそこに待っています。
