<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>PRO</strong></p>

<p><strong>At Hug Elephant Sanctuary, I had the opportunity to meet and play with elephants in their natural habitat. It was my first time to feed and bathe these majestic animals.</strong></p>

<p><strong>It felt nice to support the welfare of elephants and livelihood of local Thai village people.</strong></p>

<p><strong>We received cute elephant souvenirs to take home at the end of the day.</strong></p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>長所</strong></p>

</strong></p>

</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>***</strong></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>CON</strong></p>

<p><strong>At times, I could not help feeling like we were paying to do the work of the elephant owners and caretakers (who followed us throughout the day and simply sat on the side and watched us)!</strong></p>

<p><strong>Additionally, the ride to and from the sanctuary was extremely bumpy and we were not warned that we would travel the entire way (about 1.5 hours) from the hotel by TRUCK.</strong></p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center"><strong>短所</strong></p>

</strong></p>

</strong></p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="sra-bua-by-kiin-kiin"><strong>SRA BUA by KIIN KIIN</strong></h2>

<p>Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, the renowned modern Thai restaurant, has been awarded a prestigious One Star rating by Michelin – the global hotel and restaurant reference guide.&nbsp; The restaurant is well known for its fine dining Thai-inspired dishes created and presented with impressive modern interpretation. Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin was conceptualised by world-famous chef Henrik Yde Andersen whose Kiin Kiin restaurant in Copenhagen is one of the world’s very few Thai restaurants with Michelin star rating.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="384" height="430" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/srabua4dbf2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5796" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/srabua4dbf2.jpg 384w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/srabua4dbf2-268x300.jpg 268w" sizes="(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>We had the 8-course meal priced at&nbsp;THB 3,200++. (About USD$100).&nbsp;It was my first time at a fine dining Thai restaurant. The presentation of each dish was stunning and the flavours were bold. At times, however, I felt that the Thai spices used were too overpowering. Nonetheless, the meal was very innovative.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since its inception, Sra Bua has been praised by foodies for its unique cuisine that marries Thai-inspired modern cuisine with Western cooking techniques.&nbsp;Head Chef Chayawee invites guests to enjoy an extraordinary culinary performance as he choreographs, with his team, an amazing array of basic Thai ingredients taken from original recipes to create modern interpretations in daring combinations. The familiar flavours of traditional Thai dishes are well maintained in every exquisitely composed food presentation, prepared using global cooking techniques.</p>

<p>“Todos somos Calaveras.”</p>

<p>(“We are all skeletons.”)</p>

<p>Underneath all our manmade trappings, we are all the same.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Have you heard of the Day of the Dead (known as “Día de los Muertos” in Spanish)?</p>

<p>Day of the Dead is a&nbsp;holiday celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd. On this holiday, Mexicans remember and demonstrate love and respect for their deceased loved ones. Because of its importance as a defining aspect of Mexican culture, Day of the Dead festivities have been recognized as an UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008.</p>

<p>Though held around the same time and with a common theme of death,&nbsp;<strong>Day of the Dead is not a Mexican version of Halloween!!&nbsp;</strong>The two annual events differ greatly in traditions and atmosphere: whereas Halloween is a long dark night of ghostly mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over several days (and nights) of vibrant colors and life-affirming joy~!</p>

<p>The annual Day of the Dead festival was held the weekend I visited San Jose at the end of October! Read on to learn more about this special festival and my day in San Jose, California.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>皆様、死者の日（ししゃのひ、スペイン語:&nbsp;Día de los Muertos、英語:&nbsp;Day of the Dead）を聞いたことがありますか？</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="400" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween2059b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4626" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween2059b.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween2059b-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Bienvenidos!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="449" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween30793.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4627" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween30793.jpg 600w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween30793-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">At the festival, revelers sing and dance at a concert, don funky makeup and costumes, eat and drink, and make offerings to lost loved ones.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Unlike Japan’s Obon or China’s Hungry Ghost Festival, Day of the Dead is not a solemn occasion. In contrast, it is a vibrant, festive, and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed on. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate ancestral graves and spend time there. They also make elaborately decorated altars (called&nbsp;<em>ofrendas</em>) to welcome the spirits back. At the festival, many of these altars were set up in the trunks of cars and proudly put on display.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="400" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween47058.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4628" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween47058.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween47058-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="history"><strong>History</strong></h2>

<p>Day of the Dead originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful and believed in celebrating death as a natural phase in life’s long continuum. During Día de Los Muertos, the dead temporarily returned to Earth as members of the community.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="299" height="400" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween5a18b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4629" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween5a18b.jpg 299w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween5a18b-224x300.jpg 224w" sizes="(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>People also make elaborately decorated altars (called&nbsp;<em>ofrendas</em>) to welcome the spirits back. At the festival, many of these altars were set up in the trunks of cars and proudly put on display.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="450" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween6620f.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4630" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween6620f.jpg 600w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween6620f-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">The most famous symbol for the Day of the Dead is probably the Calavera Catrina!</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center">You might have seen this doll around before, but do you know where it came from?</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="literary-calaveras-and-the-calavera-catrina"><strong>Literary Calaveras and the Calavera Catrina</strong></h2>

<p><em>Calavera</em>&nbsp;means “skull” in Spanish, but during the late 18th and early 19th centuries the term was also used to describe short, humorous poems (often sarcastic tombstone epitaphs that poked fun at the living). These literary calaveras eventually became a popular part of Day of the Dead celebrations.</p>

<p>In the early 20th century, Mexican political cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada created an etching to accompany a literary Calavera – a personification of death in fancy French garb called the Calavera Garbancera.&nbsp;Posada&#8217;s striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face parodying a Mexican upper-class female has since become associated with the&nbsp;Día de Los Muertos&nbsp;celebrations, and today takes the prominent form of Catrina figures.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="268" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween754b6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4631" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween754b6.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween754b6-300x201.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Day of the Dead is an extremely social (and noisy) holiday that takes over the streets. People of all ages have their faces artfully painted to resemble skulls, and they dress up in suits and fancy dresses to mimic the calavera Catrina, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Many revelers wear shells or other noise-making accessories to amp up the noise—possibly to excite the dead and bring them into the fun!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="520" height="390" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween81b8d.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4632" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween81b8d.jpg 520w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween81b8d-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Artwork based on the theme for Day of the Dead. I just loved all the vibrant colors!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Hopefully, I can find myself in Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead in the near future! I have heard that&nbsp;Day of the Dead is even celebrated differently in various locations throughout Mexico. Festivities tend to be more colorful in the southern region, particularly in the states of Michoacan, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.&nbsp;Sounds like so much fun!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="391" height="522" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween9fa5b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4633" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween9fa5b.jpg 391w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween9fa5b-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>To finish off the day, I visited the San Jose Museum of Art next to the festival grounds. Did you know that San Jose is well known for its thriving Vietnamese community? At the time of my visit, the art museum was featuring an exhibit by Vietnamese artist Dinh Q. Le.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="338" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween100760.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4623" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween100760.jpg 600w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/halloween100760-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>By the way, how did everyone spend their Halloween?</p>

<p>Back in Tokyo, I rode on a Halloween Party bus with some friends! It was really fun to dress up and ride around the city. People take their costumes pretty seriously here! I felt rather underdressed, but had a lot of fun all the same!</p>

<p>Happy Halloween!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="300" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_2aaff.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4992" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_2aaff.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_2aaff-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="about-peranakan-and-nyonya">About Peranakan and Nyonya</h3>

<p>The word Peranakan translates roughly to ‘locally born and bred’, with the popular idea being that Chinese immigrants married local Malaysians; resulting in a unique culture with entirely new traditional beliefs, clothes and cuisine. The men are called “Baba” and women are referred to as “Nyonya,” respectful and endearing terms for men and women respectively in the Indonesian language. As the women were primarily responsible for providing meals for the family, Peranakan cuisine is also referred to as ‘Nyonya’.</p>

<p>In this way, Peranakan and Nyonya food is a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and other Southeast Asian cultures. It originates from Chinese immigrants, who in the 15th century moved to the regions that are now Malaysia and Singapore and Indonesia, blending influences and cooking traditions and creating&nbsp;an exhilarating combination of all things tangy, spicy, herbal and aromatic!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="449" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_3b2ca.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4993" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_3b2ca.jpg 600w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_3b2ca-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="a-taste-of-nyonya-cuisine">A Taste of Nyonya Cuisine</h3>

<p>Shall we try some Nyonya Cuisine together? Recently, my family and I went to PeraMakan, a Nonya restaurant in Singapore! The name of “PeraMakan” is a clever combination between “Peranakan” and “Makan” (which means “to eat” in Malay).</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="300" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_4bb99.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4994" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_4bb99.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_4bb99-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Dishes we ordered (from left to right); nonya ngoh hiang, Beef Rendang, Bendi Goreng Sambal, Belinjau Crackers, Assam Buah Keluak; paired with young coconuts and red wine</p>

<p>Next, for my Top 2 Favorite Nonya dishes!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="1nbspayam-buah-keluaknbsp%25e3%2582%25a2%25e3%2583%25a4%25e3%2583%25a0%25e3%2583%2596%25e3%2582%25a2%25e3%2582%25af%25e3%2583%25ab%25e3%2582%25a2">1. Ayam Buah Keluak （アヤム・ブア・クルア）</h3>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="300" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_638cf.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4996" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_638cf.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_638cf-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="400" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_53edf.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4995" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_53edf.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_53edf-300x300.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_53edf-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Perhaps the quintessential Peranakan dish, the ayam buah keluak is unique for its use of the seeds of the kepayang (a tall tree native to the mangrove swamps of Malaysia and Indonesia). The seed itself is actually poisonous! If uncooked, it contains hydrogen cyanide so a tremendous deal of prep is required before it can be eaten: the seeds have to be boiled several times and then buried (usually in ash, banana leaves, and earth for more than a month so that the fermentation process makes the cyanide easy to be cleaned). The chicken and kepayang seeds are then simmered for hours in a paste of tamarind and&nbsp;<a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener external" href="https://guide.michelin.sg/en/what-is-rempah" target="_blank" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="external">rempah</a>.<br><br>The result is a complex and piquant dish bursting with spice, savory&nbsp;<em>umami&nbsp;</em>flavors, and a tang of bitterness.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="%25ef%25bc%2592otakotaknbsp%25e3%2582%25aa%25e3%2582%25bf%25e3%2582%25aa%25e3%2582%25bf">２．Otak-Otak （オタオタ）</h3>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="300" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_71ca7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4997" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_71ca7.jpg 400w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_71ca7-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Otak-otak means “brains” in Indonesian. Although it may look like a mixture of brains, it is actually a grilled&nbsp;fish cake&nbsp;made of ground&nbsp;fish meat&nbsp;mixed with tapioca starch and spices. Otak-otak is very popular across Southeast Asia, especially across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. It is often served wrapped and grilled inside a banana, Pandan or coconut leaf.</p>

<p>The result is a spicy and fragrant fish cake with a firm mouthfeel similar to eating a Japanese Chikuwa or Satsuma-age!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="478" height="600" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_89c0c.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4998" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_89c0c.jpg 478w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/nyonya_rachel_leng_89c0c-239x300.jpg 239w" sizes="(max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>By the way, red wine complements Nyonya food very well!</p>

<p>Personally, I enjoy young red wines like Zinfandels and blends with milder spicy and aromatic foods – when chilled it is especially soothing to the palate! Although it is often said to avoid tannic wines like cabernet blends, I find that the stronger tannins complement well with the natural bitterness present in Nyonya foods. 😀</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>One of my favorite places visited when I travelled to Australia is the Sydney Fish Market! A must visit for all those who love fresh seafood.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>There is an immense variety of seafood and sashimi, including many local species! For exampe, the Yellowtail Kingfish is a natural inhabitant of the cold, clean waters of Southern Australia, and is regarded as one of the finest sashimi fish.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Look at all the fish and various seafood! Super fresh!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>We had lunch at the fish market and sat on the terrace outside. The weather was great and it was a beautiful day to sit by the harbour and enjoy a fresh seafood meal! However, you have to watch out for the seagulls who will shamelessly swoop in and attack your food the moment you are not watching!&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="760" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rachel_leng_fish_market_3ccb0-1024x760.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5192" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rachel_leng_fish_market_3ccb0-1024x760.jpg 1024w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rachel_leng_fish_market_3ccb0-300x223.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rachel_leng_fish_market_3ccb0-768x570.jpg 768w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rachel_leng_fish_market_3ccb0.jpg 1528w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Watch out for the gulls flying around!</p>

I was very surprised by the extent to which the Japanese people love clam digging as a family activity! It also appears to get significant news coverage every year.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>I organized a group of friends to try out clam digging in Chiba prefecture (apparently the area with greatest number of famous beaches for clam digging near Tokyo). Check out photos, tips, and our full itinerary below~</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="838" height="629" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_outward2d36.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4334" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_outward2d36.jpg 838w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_outward2d36-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_outward2d36-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px" /><figcaption><em>Heading out to our clam digging adventure!</em><br><em>潮干狩りの冒険に向かう！</em></figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="649" height="487" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_groupe205.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4333" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_groupe205.jpg 649w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_groupe205-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Many Japanese families are well equipped with full wading gear, tents, picnic lunches, and even more when they hit the muddy beaches for clam digging. However, most beaches are well equipped to provide visitors with rental buckets (200-500 JPY), net bags (~200 JPY), digging rakes (200-500 JPY), and even hats and sandals if you just show up without any gear!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="534" height="712" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng3fcdc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4336" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng3fcdc.jpg 534w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng3fcdc-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px" /><figcaption><em>Starting to dig for clams.&nbsp;潮干狩りが始まります～～</em></figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="370" height="493" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng579fb.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4337" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng579fb.jpg 370w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng579fb-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px" /><figcaption><em>Finding clams!　 </em></figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="513" height="684" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng26fc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4335" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng26fc.jpg 513w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng26fc-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong><u>Tips for Clam Digging</u></strong></p>

<p>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dig in the shallow water areas – clams from that area will have less sand inside.</p>

<p>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do not pick up clams that are lying on top of the sand. Healthy clams hide down under the sand.</p>

<p>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You do not need to dig very deeply, only about 5-15 cms</p>

<p>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Clams tend to congregate together so if you are digging and not finding any clams pretty quickly, move to a new spot (you should be able to find a lot in one spot).</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="465" height="603" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_22cad.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4339" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_22cad.jpg 465w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_22cad-231x300.jpg 231w" sizes="(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px" /><figcaption><em>Ta-da! The result of my hard work – filling up a 2kg net of clams!</em><br><em>ほらー！ </em></figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="535" height="611" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_1107f.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4338" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_1107f.jpg 535w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/clam_digging_rachel_leng_1107f-263x300.jpg 263w" sizes="(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

&gt;.&lt;;</p>

<p>Ended the day off with an onsen theme park at <a rel="noreferrer noopener external" href="http://www.mikazuki.co.jp/ryugu/life/spa/" target="_blank" data-wpel-link="external">Mikazuki </a>(half-moon) hotel. Highly recommended as they also have water slides and many different hot spring pools for you to soak in (*swimsuits required for the outdoor hot spring theme park*)!</p>
