The Harvard Prize Book in Japan during COVID　

コロナ禍の日本のハーバードプライズブック

Since I moved to Japan in 2017, I have presented the annual Harvard Prize Book on behalf of the Harvard Club at various high schools in Japan. The awards ceremony is typically held at the end of the school year between March to June. Last year, with the onset of the global pandemic, it was not possible to hold in-person ceremonies as non-essential businesses were shut down, and people were urged to stay home and socially distance to slow the spread of the then-novel coronavirus. Although many schools had to cancel their ceremonies, I was glad to be still able to speak to the 2019 winner of Junten High School, Miss Yoshino Kanauchi (金内佳乃). 

2017年に日本に移住して以来、私はハーバードクラブを代表して、毎年日本の様々な高校で「Harvard Prize Book」を贈呈しています。授賞式は通常、3月から6月の学年末に行われます。昨年は、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の防止により、自宅待機や社会的な距離を置くことが求められたため、授賞式は取り止めになりました。多くの学校が式典を中止しましたが、2019年度の受賞者である順天高等学校の金内佳乃さんにオンラインでお話しができてよかったです。

This year is the first time the Harvard Prize Book Awards were presented virtually, and I was humbled to contribute to the ceremony as the Alumni Awards Presenter for Japan.

From March to June 2021, I prepared a speech addressed to the high school students screened at the awards ceremonies, and met virtually with some of the winners to discuss their interests, ambitions, and dreams.

今年はハーバード・プライズ・ブック賞が初めてバーチャルで授与され、私は日本の同窓賞プレゼンターとして式典に貢献できたことを光栄に思います。

2021年3月から6月にかけて、授賞式で上映される高校生に向けたスピーチを作成したり、受賞者の方々とバーチャルでお会いして、彼らの関心事や野望、夢などをお聞きしたりしました。

Dear Winner of the Harvard Prize Book, Congratulations! 
 
Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
 
ハーバードプライズブックの受賞者の皆様、おめでとうございます！
 
ハーバードプライズブックは、色々な分野での優れた成績及び高い徳性を備えた人間性を表す、高校２年生の極めて優秀な学生に授与されます。
 
As someone who has achieved success in many different areas, you should be proud of yourself. I hope that you will consider the opportunities at Harvard and studying liberal arts. 
 
多くの異なる分野で成功を収めた人として、皆さんは自分自身を誇りに思うべきです。 ハーバード大学を経験する機会やリベラルアーツの勉強をぜひ検討してください。
 
2020 was a difficult year for many of us. The impact of the coronavirus makes it tough to plan for an uncertain future. 
 
2020年は私たちの多くにとって大変な年でした。 コロナウイルスの影響により、不確実な将来を計画することは困難です。
 
When I graduated high school and was considering being the first in my family to go to college, it was in 2008 and during the global financial crisis at that time. It was not the best year for international students to consider going to the U.S., and although I was worried about going so far away from my family and my home to venture to a foreign country alone, I took a chance and applied anyway, thinking I would never get in. 
 
 
私が高校を卒業し、家族の中で初めて大学に進学することを考えていた2008年当時は、世界的な金融危機の最中でした。アメリカに留学することを考えるのに最適な年ではなく、家族や家から遠く離れて思い切って一人で外国に行くことを心配しましたが、とにかくチャンスを掴んで入学申請をしました。けれども、絶対に入学できないと思っていました。
 
However, to my surprise, I received an offer and pursued a liberal arts education. Although I have faced many challenges since then, I have never regretted it. 
 
 しかし、驚いたことに、私は入学の内定を受け、リベラルアーツ教育を追求しました。 それ以来、多くの課題に直面してきましたが、後悔したことは一度もありません。
 
I cannot imagine what it is like to be in high school during this covid pandemic - perhaps many of you will feel insecure about the future, intimidated by expectations and fearful of the unknown. I am telling you this because, even now, I sometimes feel the same way. 
 
 この激しいコロナ禍の中での高校生活というのはどういうものか想像できません。おそらく多くの皆さんは、期待する・されることに怯え、未知のものを恐れ、将来について不安を感じるでしょう。私が皆さんにこのことを伝えるのは、私は今でも同じように感じることがあるからです。
 
Throughout history, uncertainty and global crises have happened before, and might happen again in the future. COVID will also come to pass. 
歴史を通して、不確実性と世界的な危機は以前にも起こったことがあり、将来に再び起こるかもしれません。 COVIDも収束するでしょう。
 
When it does, YOU are the generation that will be leading our future in the post-COVID new normal. Stay positive – you are not alone.
 
 その時は、皆さんはCOVID後のニューノーマルにおいて私達の未来をリードする世代です。ポジティブであり続けてください。皆さんは一人ではありません。
 
I can understand it must be confusing for any of you to consider studying overseas when so many travel restrictions are in place. Nonetheless, I have always believed that with great challenges comes great opportunities. 

 非常に多くの旅行制限が課せられているときに、留学を検討することは、皆さんにとって混乱を招くに違いないことを理解できます。それでもなお、私は常に大きな挑戦には大きなチャンスが来ると信じてきました。
 
In fact, the best time to try new things is during times like this when nobody can tell what the future will be. So, even if you try something really crazy and it fails, everything is changing anyway, and there really is no right or wrong! 
 
 事実、新しいことに挑戦するのに最適な時期は、このように未来がどうなるか誰にもわからない時期です。 だから、皆さんが本当にクレイジーなことを試みて失敗したとしても、とにかくすべてが変化していているので、本当に何が正しいのか何が悪いのかもありません！
 
Take every opportunity to try new things, even if you think they may never succeed. Who knows – it may lead you to discover something you might have thought was impossible before! 
成功しないかもしれないと思っていても、あらゆる機会を利用して新しいことに挑戦してください。 誰にもわからないけれど、それはあなたが以前は不可能だと思っていたかもしれない何かを発見することにつながるかもしれないです！
 
 
Ultimately, this pandemic has made a lot more people reflect on what is truly important. 
I’ve learned, that as people get older, they tend to think back on their younger years to figure out their dreams and life passions. However, by then it is often too late, and they regret having lost precious time. In contrast, you can do it now!  
 
 最終的に、このパンデミックにより、より多くの人々が本当に重要なことについて考えるようになりました。
私は、人々が年をとるにつれて、彼らが自分の夢と人生の情熱を見つけ出すために若い頃を振り返る傾向があることに気づきました。しかし、その時には手遅れになることが多く、貴重な時間を失ったことを後悔しています。 それとは対照的に、皆さんは今それができます！
 
Take some time to think about the changes you would like to see in the world, and what you can do towards achieving that goal. You can start small – even just in your local community! 
 
 皆さんが世界を見たいと思うその変化と、その目標を達成するために何ができるかに時間をかけて考えてください。例え皆さんが地元のコミュニティだけにいたとしても小さなことから始めることができます！
 
As nobody knows what the post-covid future will be, it is even more important to realize that a good plan today is better than an excellent plan months or years from now. What you do now, WILL make an impact in your future. 
 
 ポストCOVIDの将来がどうなるかは誰にもわからないので、今日の良い計画は、数か月または数年後の素晴らしい計画よりも優れていることを認識することがさらに重要です。 あなたが今、何をするかが、あなたの将来に影響を与えるでしょう。
 
I would like to leave you with a challenge – as we enter an ever-connected digital era, it is a contradiction that so many people find themselves isolated and alone. Take a moment every day to reach out to someone – whether they are your loved ones, your schoolmates, or even those that you’ve had a falling out with! Many times, your actions may not have immediate results, but in the long run, you will be amazed to find how important those seemingly insignificant human connections may be. 

 私は皆さんに挑戦を残したいと思いますー私たちが絶えずデジタルで接続された時代の一員であるのに、非常に多くの人々が自分自身を孤立して孤独に感じることは矛盾することです。
 毎日少しの時間を作って、誰かに手を差し伸べてください。その人達はあなたの愛する人、あなたの学友、あるいはあなたが仲違いした人であっても！ 多くの場合、皆さんの行動はすぐには結果が出ないかもしれませんが、長期的には、それらの些細な人間のつながりがどれほど重要であるかを知って驚くことでしょう。
 
 
As your semester comes to a close, it is my wish to all of you that you continue to stay ambitious, encouraged, resilient, and above all, hopeful. 
In the spirit of the Harvard Prize Book, the more that you read, write, learn, and experience, the more you will come to know and the further you will go. 
 
 皆さんの学期が終わりに近づく頃、私は皆さんが意欲的で、勇気を与えられ、立ち直りが早く、そして何よりも希望に満ちたままでいることを願っています。
 ハーバードプライズブックの精神では、読んだり、書いたり、学んだり、経験したりをすればするほど、より多くのことを知り、さらに進歩することができます。

Virtual Meetings with some of the HPB 2020 winners

After the awards ceremony, I had virtual meetings with this year’s winners along with several other promising students from Junten High School, Shibuya Makuhari High School, and Saint Maur International School. I was very impressed by the high level of achievement of these talented young students!

授賞式の後、私は今年の受賞者と、順天高等学校、渋谷幕張高等学校、サンモール国際学校の有望な生徒たちとバーチャルミーティングを行いました。才能豊かな若い学生たちの高いレベルの成果に感銘を受けました！

Junten Junior and Senior High School

順天中学・高等学校

Sae lived in the U.S. from the age of 5 to 10. Inspired by “I am Malala,” she developed an interest in education in developing countries. In 2019, she volunteered in Cambodia and also organized a crowdfunding campaign to support education for needy children, raising 100,000 yen in four days. In the future, Sae hopes to study pedagogy in developing countries at Sophia University and study abroad.

紗慧さんは、5歳から10歳までアメリカで過ごした帰国子女です。

「私はマララ」に感銘を受け、途上国の教育支援活動に興味を持ちました。

2019年(高1)に、カンボジア教育支援ボランティアツアーに参加、それ以来継続してカンボジア教育支援活動を続けています。

また、教育支援のためのクラウドファンディングを主催し、4日間で10万円の資金を集め、支援活動に役立てました。

将来は、途上国の教育学を上智大学で学び総合人間科学部の小松太郎教授に指示したいと考えています。在学中に海外留学もして知見を広めたいと考えています。

Shibuya Makuhari Junior and Senior High School

渋谷幕張中学校・高等学校

Rika is an active member of the English Debate Club and the Model United Nations Club, and has achieved excellent results in competitions such as the National High School Debate Tournament and the National Parliamentary Debate Federation Cup. She also won an award for excellence at the National Model United Nations Competition for High School Education. She aspires to go to medical school and study abroad in the future.

脇田理花さんは、帰国生のリーディングクラス及びライティングクラスにおいて際立って優秀な成績をおさめています。また、English Debate Club及び模擬国連部に所属しており、全国高校生ディベート大会および全国パーラメンタリーディベート連盟杯などにおいて優秀な成績を収めました。そして、全国高校教育模擬国連大会において優秀賞を獲得しました。医学部に進学を希望しており、将来はぜひ留学をしたいと考えています。

Saint Maur International School

Jan is a citizen of the Czech Republic who attended elementary school in Prague during Grades 1-4. In 2014, he and his family moved to Yokohama, where they have lived ever since, and he entered Grade 5 at Saint Maur. He quickly adjusted to life in a new environment as well as an unfamiliar language, and he has been an excellent student and an active participant in sports, music, speech, and drama throughout his years here. (Impressively, he speaks Czech, English, Japanese, and Spanish.)

Jan’s academic interests at the university level include European Law, International Law, Politics, and Environmental Issues. He is currently investigating higher education in the European Union (E.U.) and is considering both research universities and liberal arts colleges.

Janさんはチェコ人で、Grade 1-4の間はプラハの小学校に通っていました。2014年に家族と一緒に横浜に引っ越し、それ以来、横浜に住んでいる彼は、サンモールのGrade 5に入学しました。慣れない環境や言葉にもすぐに慣れ、成績優秀で、スポーツ・音楽・スピーチ・演劇にも積極的に参加しています。驚くべきことに、彼はチェコ語・英語・日本語・スペイン語を話すことができます！

大学では、ヨーロッパ法・国際法・政治・環境問題などを専攻したいと考えています。現在、欧州連合（E.U.）の高等教育について調査しており、研究大学とリベラルアーツカレッジの両方を検討しています。

Reflections

最後の一言

Harvard Alumni originated the Harvard Book Prize Awards Program in 1910 as part of an effort to attract the attention of talented students to the opportunities at the university. Today, more than 1900 Prize Books, sponsored by local Alumni, are awarded in schools worldwide.

As an alumni presenter of the Harvard Book Prize Awards and a member of the Harvard Club of Japan committee, I wish to encourage more students to think broadly about where they apply to college. While admission to Harvard is perceived as very competitive, it does seek out talented students around the world, and I do genuinely believe one will never know their full potential if they do not take risks and try new things, even if it may seem impossible to achieve at the start.

ハーバード大学の同窓生は、1910年に、優秀な学生に大学での様々な機会に目を向けさせるための活動の一環として、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞プログラムを創設しました。現在では、世界中の学校で1900冊以上の本が同窓生によって寄贈されています。

私は、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞のプレゼンターとして、また日本ハーバード・クラブの委員として、一人でも多くの学生に志望校を広く考えてもらいたいと思っています。ハーバード大学は競争が激しいと言われていますが、世界中の優秀な学生を求めていますし、たとえ最初は無理だと思っても、リスクを取って新しいことに挑戦しなければ、自分の可能性を最大限に発揮することはできないと私は心から信じています。

In Japan, I have noticed that many students still choose to pursue their college studies domestically in Japan, opting only for a study abroad stint rather than to challenge completing their full B.A. degree at a university abroad. However, such a short study abroad or exchange program, or limiting their consideration of studying overseas to only graduate school, is simply not the same. It cannot replace the experience of studying in a new country during one’s formative college years, as those years have tremendous potential to shape one’s future decisions and opportunities. As someone who has experienced this in my own life personally, I am a firm believer and advocate for students to gain immersive experience and exposure to living in different countries and cultures at a younger age. 

日本では、海外の大学でB.A.を取得するよりも、留学だけして国内で大学生活を送る学生が多いように感じます。しかし、そのような短期留学や交換留学、あるいは海外留学を大学院に限定して考えることは、決して同じではありません。形成期である大学時代に新しい国で勉強するという経験は、その人の将来の意思決定や機会を形成する大きな可能性を持っているため、それに代わるものではありません。私自身がこのような経験をした者として、私は学生が若いうちに異なる国や文化の中で生活する経験を積むべきだと確信し、提唱しています。

It may take some time, but I sincerely wish to see more students from Japan take the leap to pursue a liberal arts education.

シャネルマドモアゼルプリヴェ展とブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏とのマスタークラス

In October, I attended the re-opening of Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit and a masterclass event with Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion. Tokyo is the fifth stop of the exhibition’s tour, after London, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

10月に、シャネルのマドモアゼルプリヴェ展のプレオープニングと、
シャネルグローバルファッション部門のプレジデントの
ブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏とのマスタークラスイベントに参加しました。
東京は、ロンドン、ソウル、香港、上海に続き、展覧会ツアーの5番目の開催地です。

Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit

シャネルのマドモアゼルプリヴェ展

The exhibition features a unique layout with five sections over two floors inspired by different elements of the French fashion icon Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s private creation studio in Paris. Each room features a distinct color that represents the brand (white for the staircase, beige for the sofa, black for the dining room, red for the writing desk and gold for the fireplace) with haute couture creations displayed alongside bottles of the No.5 perfume and original jewelry pieces.

展覧会は、フランスのファッションアイコン　ガブリエル「ココ」シャネルのパリのプライベートクリエーションスタジオに触発された2つのフロアに5つのセクションがあるユニークなレイアウトを特徴としています。 各部屋には、ブランドを表す独特の色（階段は白、ソファはベージュ、ダイニングルームは黒、ライティングデスクは赤、暖炉はゴールド）が特徴です。 香水とオリジナルのジュエリーも展示されています。

These two words are on the sign of the door to Mademoiselle Chanel’s Creation Studio on the third floor of 31 rue Cambon in Paris. As the title of the exhibition, visitors are invited to “open Chanel’s door of creation, to embark on an immersive journey into the sources of the creative universe of the fashion house.”

I am standing here in front of a redrawing of the actual door behind which work was done, signifying an extremely exclusive experience.

これら2つの言葉（マデモワゼル・プリヴェ）は、パリのカンボン通り31番地の3階にあるマドモアゼルシャネルのクリエーションスタジオへの扉に書いてあります。 展覧会のタイトルとして、訪問者は「シャネルの創造の扉を開いて、ファッションハウスの創造的な宇宙へ旅に出る」ように招待されています。

上記の写のように、私は、仕事が行われた実際のドアの前に立って、非常に独創的な経験をしました。

Black for the Dining Room

Did you know that before Chanel made black popular, it was seen as a color worn primarily by nuns (if not reserved solely for funerals)? I am certain that if black was not such a predominant color in Chanel’s fashion, it would not have been quite so popular in Japan. After all, many Japanese seem to have a special affinity with black clothing, wearing black dresses and suits day in and day out!

シャネルが黒を流行らせる前に、葬儀のためだけか又は主に修道女が着用する色として知られていました。 シャネルのファッションにとって、黒がそれほど主体的な色でなければ、日本ではそれほど人気がなかったでしょう。 結局のところ、多くの日本人は黒い服に対して違和感を持っていなかったので、黒いドレスとスーツをよく着ていますね！

Personally, this was my favorite section – I have no doubt that almost every girl loves to glitter and sparkle!

Masterclass with Bruno Pavlovsky

ブルーノ・パブロフスキーのマスタークラス

After visiting the exhibit, I attended a masterclass with Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion.

Having worked at Chanel for over 30 years, Bruno shared his vision for Chanel and shared insights to how Chanel manages its branding.

展示を観賞した後、シャネルファッションの社長であるブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏と、彼のマスタークラスに参加しました。

シャネルに30年以上籍を置いたブルーノ氏は、シャネルに対するビジョンを共有し、シャネルがそのブランドをどのように管理しているかについて話をしてくれました。

With each market that Chanel enters, the brand faces the challenge of balancing contributions from local markets with some original brand point of view. Every market is a unique combination and the best way to execute effective branding, according to Bruno, is to appeal to customers in each specific market. It is necessary even for Chanel to adjust their brand to local perspectives.

To demonstrate this point, Bruno highlights that Chanel has over 200 boutiques. Although this number is fewer than some of their competitors, Chanel places strong emphasis on each boutique to contribute uniquely to the image of the brand.

シャネルが参入する各市場で、シャネルのブランドは地元市場でのブランドイメージと、独自のブランド視点とのバランスを取るという課題に直面しています。 ブルーノ氏によると、すべての市場はオリジナルの組み合わせであり、効果的なブランディングを実行する最良の方法は、特定の各市場の顧客にアピールすることです。 シャネルにとっても、ブランドを現地のイメージに合わせて調整する必要があります。

Ultimately, the key to effective branding is to “first understand your own message and brand in order to effectively communicate it to customers.” Once you know what you want to deliver, and have in mind a concrete idea of the brand you want to create, customers will come naturally.

最終的に、効果的なブランディングの鍵は、「最初に自分のメッセージとブランドを理解して、それを顧客に効果的に伝える」ことです。配信したいものがわかったら、作成するブランドの具体的なアイデアを頭に入れます。 その結果、顧客は自然に集まります。

With regards to digital trends and e-commerce, Bruno states that there are still no plans to sell fashion items via e-commerce. Perhaps this is unsurprising, given the fact that luxury brands such as Chanel firmly believe in the importance of unique in-store experiences.

Finally, Bruno also touched upon issues of sustainability – Chanel is making efforts to be more sustainable in sourcing its materials, and along these lines, recently stopped using exotic skins.

デジタルトレンドと電子商取引に関して、ブルーノは、電子商取引でファッションアイテムを販売する計画はまだないと述べています。 シャネルなどの高級ブランドは店内で直接商品に触れる体験の重要性をしっかりと信じているという事実を考えれば、これは驚くことではないでしょう。

At the event, I also met with Guillermo GUTIERREZ, the current CEO of Chanel Japan,

& Chairman Richard Collasse who is well-known in Japan for his active role overseeing the construction of the emblematic Chanel building in Tokyo’s Ginza district. ^^/

このイベントでは、シャネルジャパンの現CEOのGuillermo GUTIERREZ氏にもお会いしました。

そして、東京の銀座地区に象徴的なシャネルの建物の建設を監督した彼の積極的な役割で日本によく知られているRichard Collasse会長。^^/

The Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit was a spectacular experience to learn about Chanel’s history, designs, and the story behind conceptual ideas. Definitely worth a visit for all Chanel fans!

During the masterclass, I learned a lot about Chanel’s modern vision, branding strategy, and also the ongoing challenges they face. It was eye-opening to hear about how Chanel makes a concerted effort to adapt local contributions as part of its global brand, and insightful to have Bruno Pavlovsky repeatedly stress the foundational elements of successful branding (i.e., understanding what you want to deliver is the best way to ensure that the brand message will be effectively communicated to customers!).

Personally, I would have liked to hear more specifically what Bruno Pavlovsky, as President of Fashion, believes are the greatest opportunities for Chanel in the future. Moreover, I am curious to understand what he identifies as the areas that presently need the most improvement for the Chanel brand to continue to evolve.

個人的には、ファッションの社長であるブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏が、シャネルにとって今後の最大のチャンスだと考えていることをもっと具体的に聞きたかったのです。さらに、シャネルブランドが進化し続けるために現在最も改善が必要な分野として彼が特定していることを理解したいと思います。

先日、東京大学のテレビでデビューしました！

UTokyo TV (todai.tv) provides videos of extension courses and lectures at various events offered by the University of Tokyo. 東大TVは、東京大学で開催された多彩な公開講座や講演会を動画で配信する、大学公式のウェブサイトです。会員登録も費用も不要で、どなたでもご覧いただけます。東京大学では、毎日新しい「知」が生産され、世界中の「知」が行き交っています。

It was a really fun project working with the English department at the Komaba campus of Tokyo University. I acted in the role of “Professor” to deliver a lecture on Academic Presentations for first-year students in the ALESS and ALESA Programs.

東京大学駒場キャンパスの英語学科と協力して制作した本当に楽しいプロジェクトでした。 私はALESSおよびALESAプログラムの1年生のためのAcademic Presentations（学術発表）について議論するために「教授」の役割を果たしました。

東京大学の初年度文系アカデミックライティング「ALESA」と「ALESS」の授業用に作成したものですが、学術プレゼンテーションの準備をしている方であれば、どなたにとっても有益なヒントが詰まっていると思います！

In this academic presentation video series, I provide a guide to students on how to create and deliver presentations in 1) the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as 2) the Natural Sciences. The videos introduce and demonstrate some tools that can be used to make academic presentations over four chapters: content and organization, delivery, visual aids, and audience engagement.

このビデオは、「人文社会科学分野」と「実験科学分野」での学術プレゼンテーションをより効果的に行うための方法を紹介することを目的とし、「内容と構成」、「伝え方」、「視覚資料」、「質疑応答」の４章から構成されています。

Although designed specifically as a teaching material for first-year students at the University of Tokyo, the topics covered in each video address general issues to keep in mind when preparing for an academic presentation. Hopefully they will be helpful for many students to make their own successful presentations!

東京大学の1年生のための教材として特別に制作されていますが、各ビデオでカバーされたトピックは学術発表の準備をするときに覚えておくべき一般的な問題を扱います。 うまくいけば、学生たち自身のプレゼンテーション技術を向上させるために、役立つでしょう！

S-ISEFで高校生たちに対して、発言しました。

My previous post 「国際宇宙探査フォーラム　International Space Exploration Forum (Part １)」was on my experience as a Y-ISEF participant learning about the space industry and working with other talented young professionals to present our ideas in the Ideathon. In this post, I wish to share my experience as a Questioner for S-ISEF (ISEF for high school Students; http://s-isef.jpn.org/) and representing Singapore on the Y-ISEF Reception stage.

At S-ISEF, 7 teams of Japanese high school students prepared 3 minute presentations of their research on space exploration. I served as a Questioner alongside industry researchers, JAXA officials & technical experts during the Q&A session. The whole event was conducted in English, and I was so impressed by how the students were able to present and answer difficult topics with confidence and clarity! (See below for photos and a description of all the high school projects – some of the teams performed impressive experiments!)

Without any background on space exploration, it was a little difficult understanding the technical aspects of certain experiments, but I certainly learned a lot from the high school students. (For example, I did not know much about microgravity, parabolic flight, Zero G, the Magnus effect, or angular momentum generators, etc. discussed in the experiments. Don’t know what these terms mean either? Read below for some explanation!)

Aside from S-ISEF, as the only Singaporean to be invited to Y-ISEF, I also spoke on stage at the Y-ISEF Reception to introduce my personal background as a Singaporean together with Singapore’s history, main attractions, food culture, and of course Singlish! 

With other S-ISEF Questioners, including Kimiya Yui (Japanese Astronaut) and experts from space-related industries (Aerospace Engineer Danielle DeLatte and Stefan Siarov from the European Space Agency)

油井 亀美也 （JAXA宇宙飛行士）や外国宇宙機関関係者たちと一緒にS-ISEFで質問者として参加しました。

前のブログは「国際宇宙探査フォーラム　International Space Exploration Forum (Part １)」で、Y-ISEFの参加者としての経験について書きました。でも、私はISEFの色んなイベントの参加者であることに加えて、スピーカーや質問者としても関わっていました。Y-ISEFが終わった後、次世代を担う高校生を対象としたサイドイベント「S-ISEF」（ISEF for Students）にも「質問者」として誘っていただきました。

本サイドイベントでは、日本の高校生約20名のみなさんに宇宙探査に関する研究成果発表の場を提供しました。宇宙探査に関する研究分野の様々なプロジェクトはありました！例えば、「月面でのローバ探査」や「宇宙資源利用の可能性」や「宇宙空間での飛行士活動及び生物実験」など、私にとって、若手研究者も有識者もないので、質問を聞くのはちょっと大変でしたけど、とても面白かったです。高校生たちのプレゼンテーションは、私にとって、とても勉強になりました。

S-ISEFの質問者として高校生たちのプレゼンテーションについて、色んな質問をしました。皆様は英語で本当に上手なプレゼンテーションができて、凄く感銘を受けました。

As a summary, these are the topics presented by the students:

·         [team 1] Gathering magnetic substances from comets [the team had set-up an experiment assessing magnetism in microgravity and launched it on a parabolic flight]

·         [team 2] Characteristic of angular momentum generator using liquid in microgravity [interesting concept to have AOCS using momentum generated in a liquid using a pump; experiments have flown on parabolic flight]

·         [team 3] Exploration utilizing multiple autonomous rovers with a master-and-slave hierarchy [this team made two small Arduino-based rovers experimenting with distributed systems]

·         [team 4] Construction of base for life exploration on Titan [this team studied the concept of potentially in-situ resource utilization on Titan]

·         [team 5] Study of Mars exploration airplane wings [counting on the thin atmosphere of Mars, the potential use of a wing with built-in mechanism ensuring Magnus effect was studied in a wind tunnel built by the students themselves]

·         [team 6] Microbe technology for long stay on Mars [biological system was proposed to ensure the availability of oxygen on Mars for potential future human settlement]

[team 7] Exploration of deep space by generating and supplying power on Io [a novel energy generation and distribution system was proposed using thermoelectric modules and transmitting energy using microwave energy

Did you know that Singapore’s vision of being “The Garden City” was was introduced by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 11 May 1967 to transform Singapore into a city with abundant lush greenery and a clean environment in order to make life more pleasant for the people?

シンガポールは「The Garden City」の標語と呼ばれることをご存じですか。意味は、「緑あふれる都市 」ということです。Garden Cityは1967年 シンガポールが独立した直後に建国の父であるLee Kuan Yew（リークアンユーさん）が国策として取り入れた緑化政策です。

Last month, the 2nd International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF2) was held in Tokyo, sponsored by Japan’s Cabinet Office, MEXT, METI, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The event was a gathering of high-level governmental representatives to examine how space exploration expands the horizons of humanity and how it challenges us to gain and share the knowledge, experiences, and benefits as common assets for all humankind.

Although I have no background in the space industry, I was honored to be invited to as a Y-ISEF participant (http://www.isef2-se.space), a side event for around 80 young professionals selected from a global pool of candidates. An excellent platform was provided for us to exchange ideas with influential visionaries and leaders and address the future of space exploration and business opportunities.
 

The first day included an exclusive tour of the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC), located in Tsukuba Science City. There, I learned about rocket launchers, satellites, space food, and even tried on a spacesuit! Meeting JAXA astronauts and NASA experts over lunch and many small group meetings were fascinating. Because I did not know much about space, everything was new knowledge for me! (Scroll down below to check out photos, captions, and fun facts.)

The main activity in the conference was an Ideathon and presentations. All Y-ISEF participants were assigned to smaller groups to brainstorm innovative ideas related to the space industry, particularly the moon, asteroids, and Mars. I was in Team 3, and our presentation clinched 3^rd place and the JAXA Award!

文部科学省及び国立研究開発法人宇宙航空研究開発機構（JAXA）は、2018年3月に東京都内で第２回国際宇宙探査フォーラム（ISEF2）を開催しました。国際宇宙探査フォーラム（ISEF）は、宇宙探査における国際協力の促進を目的とした閣僚級を含む政府レベルでの対話・意見交換の会議です。そして、私は次世代を担う若手を対象としたサイドイベント「Y-ISEF」（ISEF for Young Professionals）に誘われて、4日間のイベントに参加致しました。本サイドイベントでは、国内外の18歳以上から35歳程度までの学生や多様な分野で活躍するヤングプロフェッショナル約80名を幅広く募り、世界をリードする起業家や各国の政策決定者等と今後の宇宙探査について議論し交流する場を提供しました。

私は、宇宙に関わらずに、色々な月や火星や小惑星を舞台にした新しい活動や事業についての話は大変勉強になりました。

「いぶき」は約１００分で地球を一周できます！すごいでしょう？？『八十日間世界一周』ということについて忘れてください　― 皆さんは現実にですでに2時間以内に世界を旅することができますよ！

お昼ご飯はNASAの関係者やJAXAの宇宙飛行士と一緒に食べました！

宇宙飛行士たちが色々な面白い話をしてくれて、感謝していますよ～　「宇宙の生活はどうでしたか」「どうして宇宙飛行士になりたかったですか」「宇宙に行った時、何を食べましたか」とか、たくさん質問をしましたよ～

でも、私は、外国人ですから、JAXAの宇宙飛行士は日本人としてどんな人なのか全然知らなかった…　宇宙飛行士たちを前にして、「日本人の皆さんはどうしてそんなに緊張しているのか？本当に優しい人々なのに…」と思いました。そんなに有名人とは全然思わなかったです！

お昼ご飯を食べた後に、「とりあえず、一緒にselfieを取りましょうか？」と若田光一さんに聞いた…　ちょっと失礼したかもしれません… T.T　でも、若田さんは本当に素敵な人ですよねー　お会いできて嬉しかったです！

In total, he has spent around 11 months in space! As the first Japanese commander of the International Space Station, he is more or less considered a National Hero in Japan.

ツアーの後、Career Mentoring（キャリアメンター）とIdeathon（アイデアソン）は行いました。

アイデアソンは、Teamによる、色んな宇宙の事業についてIdeaを考えった上で、5分のPresentationを行いました。

I was one of the Presenters for Team 3. Our idea was to build a communications network in space.

私は、Team　３のPresentationを発表しました。

Since moving to Tokyo in early 2017, I have been invited on various occasions to speak to Japanese college and high school students on topics varying from liberal arts education, to international experiences, to global careers. To date, I have spoken before in South Korea, China, Singapore, and the United States, but it is my first time to participate in such an event in Japan. Moreover, delivering a speech (albeit brief) on “The Appeal of Liberal Arts” 「リベラルアーツの魅力」in Japanese was rather challenging, but I was glad I could do it.

実は、私はパブリック・スピーキングが好きじゃないのですが、いつも話さなければならないので、だんだんうまく話せるようになると思います。そして、学生たちにインスピレーションや新しい視点を与えることができて、私にとって本当に意味があると思います。

To be honest, I am not fond of public speaking, but have gradually gotten better over time and lots of practice. The opportunity to encourage others, especially students, by providing them new inspiration and perspectives motivates me.

スピーチの準備のために、自分自身のことを見つめてみました。自分の経験や過去の決定および現在の状況を考えると、今までの人生のあり方を考える良い方法だと思います。

Preparing for each speech forces you to reflect on your own experiences, decisions, and thoughts. I have found this process of reflection and deliberation to be refreshing and effective in enabling me to think more clearly every time about my own life direction and career moving forward.

ちなみに、今日の夜は弊社の忘年会イベントです。私が司会者に選ばれるなんて光栄です。今までの講演やスピーチの経験を踏まえて、良いパフォーマンスができるように頑張ります！

By the way, it is my company’s annual End-of-Year party tonight. It will be my first time acting as the Emcee and Host in Japanese, but I will do my best to put on a good performance!

最後に、今日はリベラルアーツ３つの大切なポイントについて、短くお話したいと思います。

Lastly, I wish to summarize and share 3 key values that I believe contribute greatly to The Appeal of Liberal Arts.

第一のポイントはチャンスです。リベラルアーツは機会の扉だと思います。リベラルアーツ教育のおかげで、色々な専門やキャリアの可能性について知ることができるので、学生に計画外の機会を手に入れてもらう良い方法だと思います。

第二のポイントはインターナショナルの立場で物を考えられるということです。リベラルアーツのような教育は、グローバル人材をつくるには必要だと思います。学生たちは、リベラルアーツを通して自分のアイデンティティを確立していけると思います。

第三のポイントはCRITICAL　THINKINGです。リベラルアーツはコミュニケーションの一番いい勉強方法だと思います。この経験があるために、世界のどこにいても、プレゼンテーションができ、様々な人々と良いコミュニケーションをすることができるようになります。要するに、リベラルアーツ教育を通して世界の見方が変わります。

Firstly, Chance. Liberal Arts opens many doors for opportunities. Through a Liberal Arts Education, students can experience diverse majors and academic topics, providing so many more potential options and career directions for them to choose from when they think about what they would like to pursue. 

Secondly, International Perspectives. Through Liberal Arts, students can develop themselves as global talent and lead more global careers. Through a Liberal Arts education, students can also develop better self-understanding and establish their own unique identity.

Thirdly, Critical Thinking. Liberal Arts is one of the best way to learn communication and critical thinking skills. With a solid foundation in critical thinking, it is possible for one to go anywhere in the world and deliver effective presentations, and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds. Through a Liberal Arts education, students will change their perspective of the world.
