My father sporting his traditional chanchanko outfit!

At the end of May, my family came to visit Japan to celebrate my father’s 60^th birthday. At 60, according to the Chinese zodiac, a person has returned to the calendar sign under which the person was born after completing a full cycle of the twelve-pronged zodiac calendar. Although originally a Chinese tradition, it is arguable that Japanese society probably observes this tradition more closely now.

5月下旬、私の家族は日本に来て、父の60歳の誕生日を祝いました。日本では、還暦祝いは満年齢で60歳（数え年で61歳）を迎えたことを喜び、長寿を祝う行事です。還暦は元来中国からの伝統ですが、今は日本の方がもっと人気で、伝統を守っていますね。今まで、中国、韓国やシンガポールも住みましたが、日本以外では、この行事は残っていません。

I bought a red chanchanko set for my father to celebrate his ‘kanreki’ 60^th birthday the traditional Japanese way!

折角日本で６０歳の誕生日をお祝いですので、伝統的な還暦祝いをする方がいいと思います。

赤いちゃんちゃんこをお父さんに買ってあげました～☆

In Japan, this 60^th birthday is celebrated as “kanreki”　（還暦）, where the honoree wears red clothes including a traditional red cap and chanchanko （ちゃんちゃんこ　vest）. Red clothing is usually worn by babies in Japan, and for the person celebrating Kanreki to also wear red signifies that he or she is beginning his or her life all over again. Achievements are celebrated and a lifetime’s troubles are forgotten as the celebrated individual enters a new stage of life with all the joy and possibilities of a newborn.

でも、今の６０歳の方々は見た目も若いし、体力に自信のある方も多いので、年寄って感じじゃないですよね。（笑）

特に、父親が若く見えるので、お店の人達は還暦を祝っていることを信じられなかったようです！

皆様は還暦の意味や赤いちゃんちゃんこの由来を知っていますか？

60年で干支（えと）が一回りして再び生まれた年の干支にかえります。元の暦に還（かえ）るという意味でこのように呼ばれています。♪

そこで、赤ちゃんの産着に魔除けの意味がある赤色が使われていたことに因んで、
還暦のお祝いでは赤いちゃんちゃんこなどを贈る風習がありますね。

To celebrate the actual birthday, we went on a day trip to Takaosan from Tokyo~

誕生日の当日は、高尾山に日帰り旅行をしました～

We walked around at the top of the mountain. There was beautiful nature and a temple!

サミットの周りを散歩しました～　景色はとても綺麗で、

自然は素晴らしいです！

Considered a sacred mountain, Takaosan has been a center of mountain worship for more than 1000 years.　Yakuoin Temple is along the trail near the mountain’s summit and is a popular destination for visitors to stop and pray to Shinto-Buddhist mountain gods (tengu) for good fortune. 

Dango (団子、sweet mochi balls) grilled over a charcoal fire (yaki-dango 炭火焼き団子) are supposedly one of the local food recommendations for the area, and so I took the chance to try one! It was quite yummy~

高尾山の炭火焼き団子は有名らしいですので、食べてみました！美味しかったですよ！

うかい鳥山でもちゃんちゃんこを着ました～

We had an amazing meal at Ukai Toriyama and strolled around in the beautiful Japanese garden.

うかい鳥山で美味しいご飯をいただきました！そして、公園も散歩しました～　すごく美しくて、静かで、穏やかな庭でした！

他にも、還暦なので赤いものを取り入れたプレゼントが一番良いと思っていますので、

「かんれきだもの」と書いた赤いT-shirtもプレセントとして父にあげました　^^/

父は餃子屋にシャツを着っていきました～　餃子屋で誕生月の間に、年齢分の餃子はただでもらえますよ～

For birthday presents, it is supposedly best to buy something red. Hence, I bought a red T-shirt for my father which says “I am a Kanreki”~! Cute, isn’t it? Hehe

We went to a gyoza restaurant where people celebrating their birthdays can get free gyoza for every year of their age!
