Although originally a Chinese tradition, it is arguable that Japanese society probably observes this tradition more closely now.<br />

<p>At the end of May, my family came to visit Japan to celebrate my father’s 60th&nbsp;birthday.&nbsp;At 60, according to the Chinese zodiac, a person has returned to the calendar sign under which the person was born&nbsp;after completing a full cycle of the twelve-pronged zodiac calendar.&nbsp;Although originally a Chinese tradition, it is arguable that Japanese society probably observes this tradition more closely now.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="965" height="723" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/chanchankobdb4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4307" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/chanchankobdb4.jpg 965w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/chanchankobdb4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/chanchankobdb4-768x575.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">I bought a red chanchanko set for my father to celebrate his ‘kanreki’ 60th&nbsp;birthday the traditional Japanese way!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>In Japan, this 60th&nbsp;birthday is celebrated as “kanreki”　（還暦）, where the honoree wears red clothes including a traditional red cap and&nbsp;<em>chanchanko&nbsp;</em>（ちゃんちゃんこ　vest）. Red clothing is usually worn by babies in Japan, and for the person celebrating&nbsp;<em>Kanreki&nbsp;</em>to also wear red signifies that he or she is beginning his or her life all over again.&nbsp;Achievements are celebrated and a lifetime’s troubles are forgotten as the celebrated individual enters a new stage of life with all the joy and possibilities of a newborn.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>To celebrate the actual birthday, we went on a day trip to Takaosan from Tokyo~</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="595" height="745" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosanaf76.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5822" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosanaf76.jpg 595w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosanaf76-240x300.jpg 240w" sizes="(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Going up the mountain via cable lift!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="742" height="556" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng7c2d.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5821" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng7c2d.jpg 742w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng7c2d-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px" /></figure></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">We walked around at the top of the mountain. There was beautiful nature and a temple!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="814" height="611" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng14a4c.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5819" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng14a4c.jpg 814w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng14a4c-300x225.jpg 300w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng14a4c-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Considered a sacred mountain, Takaosan has been a center of mountain worship for more than 1000 years.　Yakuoin Temple is along the trail near the mountain’s summit and is a popular destination for visitors to stop and pray to Shinto-Buddhist mountain gods (tengu) for good fortune.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="664" height="498" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng24d50.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5820" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng24d50.jpg 664w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/takaosan_rachel_leng24d50-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Dango (団子、sweet mochi balls) grilled over a charcoal fire (yaki-dango&nbsp;炭火<em>焼き団子)&nbsp;</em>are supposedly one of the local food recommendations for the area, and so I took the chance to try one! It was quite yummy~</p>

</em></p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="568" height="666" src="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ukai_toriyama_rachel_leng2dba.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5887" srcset="https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ukai_toriyama_rachel_leng2dba.jpg 568w, https://rachelleng.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ukai_toriyama_rachel_leng2dba-256x300.jpg 256w" sizes="(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px" /></figure></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>We had an amazing meal at Ukai Toriyama and strolled around in the beautiful Japanese garden.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center">Beautiful private room at Ukai Toriyama!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

前の話ですが、まだ読んでいない方はここをクリックしてぜひご覧ください～　<a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="https://rachelleng.com/100-gyoza-challenge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="internal"></a><a href="https://rachelleng.com/100-gyoza-challenge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-wpel-link="internal">100 GYOZA CHALLENGE餃子１００個チャレンジ</a>）</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>For birthday presents, it is supposedly best to buy something red. Hence, I bought a red T-shirt for my father which says “I am a Kanreki”~! Cute, isn’t it? Hehe</p>

<p>We went to a gyoza restaurant where people celebrating their birthdays can get free gyoza for every year of their age!</p>

<p>(By the way, this is the same restaurant where my brother won a gyoza eating challenge! Find out more about how to be a champion&nbsp;and watch a video on my previous blog post:&nbsp;<a href="https://rachelleng.com/100-gyoza-challenge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="rank-math-link" data-wpel-link="internal">100 GYOZA CHALLENGE餃子１００個チャレンジ</a>)</p>
