Today, I wish to share about my day trip from Tokyo to Hakone. During a difficult period where cross-border movement is severely restricted, I hope that this article will transport you to a different destination with me and perhaps inspire your future travels!

今日は、東京から箱根への日帰り旅行についてシェアしたいと思います。
国境を越えての移動が厳しく制限されている困難な時期に、
この記事が私と一緒にあなたを別の目的地に連れて行き、
おそらくあなたの将来の旅行を刺激してくれることを願っています！

In a face-to-face standoff on stage, I was struggling to balance. Whoever loses the next round of Janken (Scissors-Paper-Rock) will have to widen their stance and surely fall bottom-first on the wooden floor – unless either one of us can do the splits!

“Sei, no, Janken-poi!” (“scissors paper rock, go!”) …
A split-second moment of uncertainty, followed by shrieks of excitement and nervous laughter as we realized, paper beat stone! Sliding her feet outwards along to the rhythm of the game, my opponent went down gracefully in a flurry of pastel silk… but not a single hair out of place!

It was my first experience playing tea house party games with a geisha, and certainly a memorable one. Although Kyoto city first comes to mind when one thinks of geisha culture, did you know that there are about 30 Geisha houses and 150 expertly trained geishas still active in Hakone?

Follow my itinerary for a day trip to play traditional parlor games with Geisha (ever heard of “Konpira” or “Tora tora tora”? Try them at your next house party!), enjoy a specialty lunch of Tofu Katsuni, and explore the Hakone Open Air Museum!

ステージで離れて向かい合って立った時、
私はバランスを取るのが大変でした。
次のじゃんけんで負ける人は、足をさらに広げていき、
最後には木の床の上に立っていることができなくなります。
（私たちのどちらかが両足開きができなくなる限り！）

「せい、の、じゃんけんぽい！」 …

ほんの束の間の沈黙、
それに続いて興奮と緊張の笑い声：
紙は石を包む！

お座敷あそびのリズムに沿って芸者さんの足を外側に徐々に滑らせて、
私の対戦相手はパステルシルクの裾をはためかせて優雅に転びました…

しかも、彼女の髪型はまだ完璧なままでした！

芸者さんとのお座敷あそびは初めての体験で、とても印象に残りました。
芸者文化といえば京都市が最初に思い浮かびますが、
箱根には約30戸の芸者置屋と150人の芸者たちがまだ活動していることをご存知ですか？

日帰り旅行の日程に従って、歴史ある芸者劇場である湯本見番で芸者さんとお座敷遊びをし
(「コンピラ」や「トラトラトラ」を聞いたことがありますか？
次は自宅でのパーティーにぜひこれをお試しください~!) 、
「豆腐かつ煮」という名物ランチを楽しみ、
箱根彫刻の森美術館に遊びに行きましょう！

Hakone at the foot of Mt. Fuji has been one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resort towns for centuries. The very first hot spring opened in Hakone actually dates back to the year 757 and about 5000 tons of natural spring water is produced from the nearby mountains annually! Easily accessible within 1.5 hours from Tokyo, the town is a popular destination to enjoy Japanese culture and art.

富士山のふもと箱根町は、何世紀にもわたって日本で最も有名な温泉地の1つです。
箱根での最初の温泉は実際に西暦757年にさかのぼり、
毎年約5000トンの天然温泉水が近くの山から生産されています！
東京から1.5時間以内で簡単にアクセスできるこの街は、

Meet Geisha at Hakone Yumoto
箱根湯本で芸者さんに会いましょう

“Take a trip back in time to indulge in classic Japanese culture and entertainment with Geishas”

Just a 5-minute walk from the Hakone Yumoto station is the Yumoto Kenban Geisha theatre!

箱根湯本駅から徒歩わずか5分の場所に、
「湯本見番」という芸者の劇場があります！

For about an hour, I had the rare opportunity to watch Geisha performing classical Japanese dances, play some old-fashioned parlor games, and get up close and personal with these beautiful women clad in enchanting silk kimonos. 

約1時間、芸者さん達が日本の古典舞踊を披露したり、
伝統的なゲームで遊んだり、
着物をまとったこれらの美しい女性に会うという、
まれな機会がありました。

The dance performances were mesmerizing. As traditional Japanese art forms, geisha songs have been passed down through the centuries. Some portrayed famous scenes from Japanese history, others weaved mystical stories of the legends of old, and yet others were poetic impressions of the seasons. One rare dance requiring a high level of skill was Yaakosan, telling the tale of a struggling lower-class samurai and his childhood sweetheart. I found this dance particularly striking, as the geisha had to impersonate the sturdy posture and strong behavior of a samurai. These masculine movements juxtaposed the porcelain face and floral silk kimono of the performing geisha.

芸者さんの踊りはとても魅惑的でした。
日本の伝統芸術として、
芸者の歌は何世紀にもわたって受け継がれてきました。
その歌の内容は、
日本の歴史から有名な話を表現したものもあり、
伝説の神秘的な物語を織り込んだものもあり、
四季折々のシーンを歌ったものもあり、
とても詩的な印象を持ちました。
高度なスキルを必要とする珍しい踊りの1つは、
下級の武士と彼の幼年期の恋人の闘争についての「奴さん」でした。
芸者が武士の頑強な姿勢と強い態度を真似しなければならなかったので、
この踊りは特に印象的でした。
これらの男性的な動きは、
花柄の着物を着て踊る芸者さんの磁器のような白い顔がとても際立っていました。

As part of the event, I tried my hand at parlor games often played at teahouses with the Geisha, referred to as “ozashiki asobi” in Japanese. There are many games, but Konpira is perhaps the most commonly known. It is a rhythm game that involves the players tapping a small bowl or cup placed between them to the rhythm of the “konpira fune fune” song. Players have to put out a fist or flat hand on the table depending on if the cup is there or not!

芸者劇場では芸者さんと一緒に置屋で良く行う「お座敷あそび」をしました。
多くのゲームがありますが、
おそらく「金毘羅」（コンピラ）は最も一般的に知られていると思います。
これは、「金毘羅ふねふね」の歌のリズムに合わせてプレイヤーが彼らの間に置かれた小さなボウルやカップを軽く叩くリズムゲームです。
プレーヤーは、カップがある時とない時に応じて、
テーブルに手の平また拳を出す必要がありますね！

All the setup required for the game is a table and a small bowl or cup to be placed between players!
ゲームに必要なセットアップは、プレーヤーとの間に置かれるテーブルと小さなボウルまたはカップだけです！

Although the game sounds simple, it can get confusing quickly, especially as the song tempo increases! Unfortunately, I lost to the Geisha, but had a lot of fun! In a traditional teahouse, the loser will have to drink their sake.

ゲームは簡単に見えますが、特に曲のテンポが上がると、
すぐに混乱する可能性があります！
残念ながら、芸者さんに負けてしまいましたが、とても楽しかったです！
普段の宴会やお座敷では敗者は酒を飲む必要がありますよ～。

Tofu Katsu Lunch in Gora
強羅の豆腐カツランチ

I made my way up to Gora for lunch at Tamura Ginkatsutei, a Japanese restaurant founded in 1973 famous for its Tofu Katsu!

The restaurant is conveniently located near Gora station. You will be able to spot this popular restaurant quickly when you see the lines of people waiting outside! Luckily, we had a reservation and were able to skip the wait.

1973年に豆腐かつで有名な日本料理店、
田村銀閣亭で昼食のために強羅に向かいました！

レストランは強羅駅の近くという便利な場所にあります。
外で待っている人々の長蛇の列を見れば、
この人気のレストランをすぐに見ることができます！
幸いなことに、予約をしていたので、並べないで入ることができました。

The signature dish of Tamura Ginkatsutei is the Tofu Katsuni, an original simmered dish of soft tofu filled with ground meat then deep-fried. The shop owner created this dish for his elderly mother when she had trouble chewing.

田村銀閣亭の名物は、「豆腐カツ煮」という定食です。
柔らかな豆腐にひき肉を詰めてから揚げたオリジナル料理です。
店主は、高齢の母親が噛むのに苦労したときにこの料理を作りました。

I enjoyed the gentle flavor of this dish and can see why the Hakone specialty is a favorite with customers of all ages, from children to senior citizens. In addition to the set meal, they have a diverse menu including other Katsu and Tempura dishes!

私はこの料理の優しい風合を楽しんで、箱根の名物が子供から高齢者まで、
あらゆる年齢のお客様に人気がある理由が分かりました。
定食に加えて、メニューは他のカツや天ぷら料理を含む多様な種類があります！

Tamura Ginkatsutei is very particular about the tofu used in the recipe, and the restaurant staff tells me that they partnered with Gindofu, a local tofu shop, to come up with this custom-made dish.

田村銀閣亭は、レシピで使用されている豆腐に非常にこだわり、
レストランのスタッフは、地元の豆腐店である「銀豆風」と協力して、
このカスタムメイドの料理を考案したと言っています。

Afternoon at the Hakone Open Air Museum
箱根彫刻の森美術館

One stop (or about a 10-minute walk) away from Gora is Chokoku-no-Mori, home to Hakone’s Open-Air Museum.

強羅から1駅（または徒歩約10分）のところには、
箱根彫刻の森美術館があります。

This awe-inspiring museum exhibits various eclectic sculptures in combination with scenic views of the surrounding valley and mountains.

この素晴らしい博物館は、周囲の谷や山々の美しい景色に合うように、
多種多様な彫刻を展示しています。

After gaining admission, an escalator will take you to the central area of the park.

入場した後、エスカレーターで公園の中央エリアに入ります。

Outdoor sculptures and exhibits create a harmonic balance of nature and art.

屋外の彫刻と展示は、自然と芸術の調和の取れたバランスを作り出します。

The vast expanse of the museum makes you feel an unrestricted sense of creative liberty as you walk past and through exhibits that blend tradition and modernity.

博物館の広さの中、私達が伝統と現代性を融合させた展示物を通り過ぎるとき、
自由に創造的な無限の感覚を感じるようになります。

The main large open square that opens the museum features Man and Pegasus by Carl Milles, a tall column that reaches up to the sky topped with a black sculpture of a man seemingly leaping off a horse. As a Swedish artist who loved to create works that integrated themselves into their environment, the man leaping off Pegasus at the top of the column seems to fly forward into the clouds.

博物館に入ると目の前の大きな広場には、空にまで届く背の高い柱に、
男の人がペガサスの上を飛んでいるように見える黒い彫刻があります。
自分の環境に自分自身を統合する作品を制作するのが大好きなスウェーデンのアーティストの作品で、
コラムの一番上で紹介しました。
ペガサスから飛び降りる男は雲の中に飛んでいくように見えます。

Next to La Pleureuse, one of the iconic sculptures near the entrance of the museum.
A woman’s head rests on a bed of water with tears streaming down her face, framed by a crown of green plants. The legend goes she is a narcissist who has fallen in love with her own reflection.

Kid-Friendly: Many sculptures are built for the amusement of children.
Kids can have a great time climbing and running around sculptures like an outdoor jungle gym!

子供が楽しめる：多くの彫刻は子供の娯楽のために作られています。
子供たちは、屋外のジャングルジムのような彫刻を登ったり降りたりするのに
最高の時間を過ごすことができます！

One such installation is the Curved Space-Diamond Structure, a giant gemstone playground structure by Peter Pearce. Children are allowed to remove their shoes and climb inside!

While adults are not allowed to climb inside, you will experience streaks of childhood playfulness when exploring a giant kaleidoscope of colorful kids clothing reflected through different angles. The beauty of natural geometries is a winner in this installation, as the structure was based on the shape of a diamond molecule enlarged 8 billion times.

そのようなインスタレーションの1つが、
Peter Pearceによる巨大な宝石の遊び場であるCurved Space-Diamond Structureです。
子供は靴を脱いで中に登ることができます！

大人は中を登ることは許可されていませんが、
中で遊ぶ子供達が動くと様々な角度から反射されるカラフルな子供服で巨大な万華鏡のように感じます。
子供時代の遊び心がよみがえります。
構造がダイヤモンド分子の形状に基づいて80億倍に拡大されたため、
自然な幾何学の美しさがこのインスタレーションのアートの特徴です。

A Nest in the Woods: a fun wooden nest filled with colorful interwoven nets is specially designed and built without the use of bolts, making it safe and fun for kids to climb and explore! The Surrealist sculpture Personnage by Joan Miró can be found welcoming visitors to the Wood of Net.
Over 320 cubic meters and 500 different kinds of wood were used to create the pavilion, joined using thousand-year-old Japanese wooden temple architectural methods without the use of any metal.

森の巣：多様なネットで織り合わせた楽しい木製の巣は、
ボルトを使用せずに特別は設計で構築されているため、
子供が登って探索するには安全で楽しい場所です！
Joan Miróによるシュールレアリスムの彫刻の人物像は、
Wood of Netへの訪問者を歓迎しています。
パビリオンの制作には、320m³を超える500種類の木材が使用され、
金属を一切使用せずに、千年前の日本の木造寺院の建築方法を使用して作成しました。

Inside is the brightly colored Knitted Wonder Space 2, made with over 650kg of hand-knitted braided nylon crocheting into nets. Children are allowed to crawl through the entire net, which is meant to symbolize the cradle of the womb. Maybe one-day similar structures will be created for adults to enjoy too, as it would be a wonderful way for us to play like children again and rekindle our childhood innocence!

650kg以上の手編みの編まれたナイロンのかぎ針編みでネットが作られています。
子供たちは、ネット全体をと通り抜けることができます。

The Picasso collection is the key attraction of the Hakone open-air Museum. It is packed with more than 300 paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and art of the legendary Spanish artist.

ピカソコレクションは、箱根彫刻の森美術館の重要な魅力の一つです。
300以上の絵画、彫刻、陶器、
スペインの伝説になるくらいの有名な芸術家の芸術作品です。

Outside the Picasso building is Le Fleur qui Marche (Walking Flowers), a sculpture by Leger, active during the cubist period and renown for his inventive work. The theme of “Walking Flowers” explores how nature and humans can harmoniously co-exist and move towards a future together.

ピカソの建物の外には、キュービズム時代に活躍し、
独創的な作品で有名なレジェの彫刻、
ルフルールキマルシェ（Walking Flowers）があります。
「花を歩く」というテーマは、
自然と人間が共存する方法を探究しているように見えます。

Although most people travel to the Hakone region for the onsens and nature, I highly recommend a visit to the Hakone Open Air Museum for a beautiful art experience!

ほとんどの人は温泉と自然を求めて箱根に旅行しますが、
美しいアート体験のために箱根彫刻の森美術館を訪れることを強くお勧めします！

A City of Islands

都市としての島

Although Onomichi is considered a “city,” it actually consists of many islands!

One of the exceptional attractions in Onomichi is the Shimanami Kaido, or Shimanami Sea Route, that crosses bridges and islands of the Seto Inland Sea to connect Japan’s main island of Honshu to Shikoku. It is the only such land connection that is traversable by cyclists and even pedestrians, making Onomichi very popular for cycling enthusiasts!

尾道は「都市」と見なされていますが、実際にはいくつかの島で構成されています。

尾道の特別なアトラクションの1つは、瀬戸内海の橋と島々を横断して日本の本州である四国を結ぶ「しまなみ海道」です。 サイクリストや歩行者も一緒に通行できる唯一の島と島を結ぶ橋であり、サイクリング愛好家にとって尾道は非常に人気があります！

Hop over to Ikuchijima (生口島)
生口島へ行きましょう!

Take a ferry over to Ikuchijima to visit the colorful Kosanji Temple (耕三寺), one of the main highlights along the Shimanami Sea Route. 

フェリーに乗って生口島に行き、しまなみ海道の主要な見所の1つであるカラフルな耕三寺を訪れました。

Nostalgic Port Town: many small ferries operate between the Onomichi’s downtown area and its nearby islands.

ノスタルジックな港町：尾道の繁華街とその近くの島々の間で小さなフェリーが運航しています。

Cyclists can also bring their bicycles with them on the ferry! 

サイクリストは、フェリーに自転車を持ち込むことができます！

*Tip: Aside from ferries, fly on the Setouchi Seaplanes for a truly special island hopping experience!

A Magnificent Celebration of Family at Kosanji Temple

「家族の絆」を祈る耕三寺

Kosanji Temple was founded in 1936 by the successful industrialist Kozo Kosanji who built it stirred by his devotion to his mother. The temple belongs to the Honganji Sect of the Jodo Shinshu school of Pure Land Buddhism and exhibits French-style welding techniques pioneered in early twentieth-century Japan. 

耕三寺は1936年に成功した実業家によって設立されました。 この寺院は浄土真宗の本願寺に属し、20世紀初頭に日本で開拓されたフランス式の技術で建てられています。

The temple complex took over 30 years to construct!

神殿複合施設の建設には30年以上かかりました！

Moved by his mother’s unconditional love and compassion, Kosanji built the temple to be colorful in every season, creating a vibrant atmosphere for all visitors reminiscent of a mother’s warmth. 

母親の無条件の愛と思いやりに心を動かされた耕三寺は、季節ごとに変化する樹々に合わせて色彩りを添えるようにこの寺院を造り、すべての訪問者が母性の暖かさを感じて元気になる雰囲気で造られました。

From Spring cherry blossoms to Autumn momoji (maple trees), the Kosanji Temple is worth a visit any time of the year!

春の桜から秋の紅葉まで、耕三寺は一年中訪れる価値があります！

If temple fans may sense a feeling of deja vu, it is probably because many of the buildings are modeled after other famous Japanese temples. 
For example, the grand replicas of famous buildings such as Nikko Toshogu’s Yomeimon Gate and Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall at Kosanji Temple.

寺院のファンがデジャヴの感覚を感じる場合、それはおそらく建物の多くが他の有名な日本の寺院をモデルにしているためです。

たとえば、日光東照宮の陽明門や宇治の平等院などの有名な建物の素晴らしいレプリカ。

The Koyo no Mon gate took 10 years to build and is a reproduction of the Yomei Gate in Nikko.

耕三寺の「孝養門」は建造に10年かかり、日光の陽明門を再現したものです。

Walking through the temple grounds, visitors will notice that all the buildings are colorful and sundry, yet complement each other to imprint a distinct architectural style. 

寺院の敷地内を歩くと、訪問者はすべての建物がカラフルで種々の建物がたくさんあることに気付くでしょう。これらは、互いに相互作用して独特の建築様式を生み出しています。

The approximately 50,000 square meter grounds with its seasonal beauty reminds you of a garden out of mythology. The temple is also famous for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

四季折々の美しさがある約50,000平方メートルの敷地は、訪れた人達に神話のような物語を思い起こさせます。 寺は桜と紅葉でも有名です。

According to historical documentation, Kosanji not only built the temple, but even went so far as to become a priest in order to repay a son’s debt of gratitude to his mother. 

歴史的な文書によると、耕三寺は神殿を建てただけでなく、母親への感謝を表すために息子が司祭になりました。

Kosanji Temple also features a large statue of Guanyin – perhaps the most well-known Buddhist bodhisattva associated with compassion and mercy, a mother-goddess.

耕三寺には、観音像もあります。それは仏教で最も有名な慈悲に関連する慈母観音です。

Touched by the story of Kosanji, I found myself taking quiet moments to think of my own mother and give gratitude for all the sacrifices she made to raise me. 

耕三寺の話に触れて、私は静かな時間の中で自分の母親について考え、母が私を育てるためにしてくれた全てに感謝していることに気づきました。

Reflecting on the temple’s founding story and the beautifully curated scenery surrounding me, I wrote the haiku:

At the time I visited, there was an ongoing haiku contest, to which I submitted the above poem.

No idea if I will win anything, but it was meaningful to create something to capture a personal memory! Perhaps I should try writing more poems for more places that I visit. 🙂

私が入賞するかどうかはわかりませんが、個人的な記憶を残しておくために俳句を読むことは有意義でした！もっと多くの場所を訪れて、もっと俳句を書いてみるべきでしょう。 ^^/

On the top of a hill behind the Kosanji Temple, you will find a large white area called Miraishin no Oka, meaning “Heights of Eternal Hope for the Future.”

耕三寺裏の丘の頂上には、「未来へ続く永遠の希望の碑」がある「未来心の丘」と呼ばれる大きな白いエリアがあります。

Entering the area, the sheer magnitude of open space and grand white marble structures will take your breath away. I felt like I was entering by a magical white wonderland! 

未来心の丘に入ると、広大なオープンスペースにすべて白い大理石で造られたモニュメントがあり、息をのむような感じになります。 私は魔法にかけられた白い不思議の国に入っているように感じました！

Designed and created over a period of 16 years by Itto Kuetani, an environmental sculptor born in Hiroshima Prefecture who is still active in Italy, this marvelous marble garden was opened in October 2000. 

この素晴らしい大理石の庭園は、広島県出身の環境彫刻家で、イタリアで現在も活躍している杭谷 一東（くえたに　いっとう）によって16年間にわたって設計および作成され、2000年10月にオープンしました。

Over 3000 tons of marble were used to construct Miraishin no Oka. I could not believe that all of the marble was imported from Carrara in Italy! What an incredible undertaking.

約3000トンの大理石が未来心の丘の建設に使用されました。 すべての大理石がイタリアのカラーラから輸入されたとは信じられませんでした！

Covering over 5,000 square meters of ground, the garden was designed around the theme of “Familial Ties” and symbolizes a peaceful world bright with hope for the future.

庭は5,000平方メートルを超え、「家族の絆」をテーマに設計され、未来への希望に満ちた平和な世界を象徴しています。

White Carrara Marble quarried in the city of Carrara in northern Tuscany is known as a special material of the highest quality popular for use in sculpture and building decor. It is this very marble that Michelangelo and Canova used for their famous sculptures!

Throughout the spacious marble garden, there are a number of abstract statues all made entirely of marble. These monuments of various shapes and sizes all achieve a remarkable harmony with nature by incorporating the surrounding environment as part of its beauty.

トスカーナ州北部のカラーラ市で採石されたホワイトカラーラマーブルは、彫刻や建物の装飾での使用に人気のある最高品質の特殊素材として知られています。 ミケランジェロとカノバが有名な彫刻に使用したのは、まさにこの大理石です！

広々とした大理石の庭には、すべて大理石でできた抽象的な彫像がたくさんあります。 さまざまな形と大きさのこれらの記念碑はすべて、その美しさの一部として周囲の環境を取り入れることで、自然との見事な調和を実現しています。

The pure-whiteness of Miraishin no Oka gives it the sense of a blank slate that sets no limits to the imagination, allowing visitors to reflect and use their own creativity and personality to make out various shapes and stories from their surroundings.

未来心の丘の白さは、まるで白紙のように無限にいろいろ想像できる感覚を与え、訪問者が自分の創造性と個性を反映し、周囲の建物からさまざまな自身の形や物語を作り出すことを可能にします。

For example, these structures made me think of playing cards, where you can insert your own face into! The porous holes in the statue also allow you glimpses of the sky and trees surrounding the gardens, incorporating the environment into the artwork. This was the trademark of Itto Kuetani’s work as an environmental sculptor.

たとえば、これらの構造により、自分の顔を入れたトランプを思い浮かべました！ 彫像の多孔質の穴から、また庭園を取り囲む空と木々が垣間見え、環境をアートワークに取り入れます。 これは、環境彫刻家としての杭谷一東の作品の特徴です。

At the peak of the hill, a grand tower called the Tower of Light stands arrestingly. 

丘の頂上には、光の塔と呼ばれる壮大な塔が建っています。

The tower is the tallest point on the grounds, and therefore signifies an accumulation of power at the summit. To me, the structure conjures the image of the tips of two fingers pressed together, such as in the hand gestures used during yoga and medication to direct the flow of energy into our body. 

タワーは、地上で最も高い地点であり、したがって、頂上は自然界のパワーを表しています。 私にとって、この構造は、ヨガや薬物療法で体にエネルギーの流れを向ける際に使用される手の形など、2本の指の先端が一緒に重なったイメージを想い起こさせました。

The Tower of Light reminds me most of “Kali Mudra,” the hand gesture that represents purification and transformation, and directs energy for awakening purification. 

光の塔は、浄化と変容を表す形であり、浄化を目覚めさせるエネルギーを導く「カリムドラ」のほとんどを思い出させます。

Perhaps this symbolism is most appropriate, as visitors feel purified and transformed after their visit.

訪問者は訪問後に浄化され、変化したと感じるためには、おそらくこの「カリムドラ」が最も適切です。

Overall, the pure white landscape projects durability and solidity, yet elegance in its soft gleam and precious brilliance.

この真っ白なモニュメントの意味は、全体として、「忍耐」と「健康」を重ね備えています。その柔らかで上品な輝きはとても貴重なものです。

During warm days and under a hot sun, the pretty white marble is very cooling to the touch and relaxes you!

暖かい日と暑い日差しの下では、きれいな白い大理石に触ると非常に冷たく感じ、リラックスできます！

According to our guide, Yoshida-san, the Miraishin no Oka was built as part of a museum with the philosophy to provide everyone, especially the children of Onomichi, a large open space to play freely. Miraishin no Oka does not have any religious function as part of Kosanji, but is rather one of the temple’s artistic properties.

学芸員の吉田さんのガイドによると、未来心の丘は博物館、特に尾道の子供たちに自由に遊べる大きな広場を提供するという哲学のもとに建てられました。 未来心の丘は、耕三寺の一部としての宗教的機能はありませんが、むしろ寺の芸術的特性の1つです。

Today, the area is extremely handicap accessible, where couples, families, and children can all enjoy the freedom of climbing around marble structures. What better way to celebrate family ties and world peace than a trip to the marble garden of Miraishin no Oka?

The Time is Ripe for Lemons

In Japan, Hiroshima prefecture is the No.1 area for lemon production. The Setoda area including Ikuchijima Island of Onomichi is one of the leading areas for citrus fruit production, producing 35% of the country’s total!

日本では、広島県がレモン生産の第一の地域です。
瀬戸田地域生口島は、柑橘類生産の主要地域の1つであり、国全体の35％を生産しています。

When exploring the island, you will find many lemon and other citrus fruit trees growing.

On sunny slopes and grassy grounds, trees bend under the weight of red-yellow fruit! 

島のどこに行っても、多くのレモンや他の柑橘類の果樹が成長しています！

日の当たる斜面や草が茂った大地には、赤や黄色く熟した果実がたわわに実って、木々の枝がしなっています！

Unlike lemons from other parts of the world, Setoda lemons are famous for their nice fragrance and mild flavor. 

世界の他のレモンとは異なり、瀬戸田のレモンは素敵な香りとマイルドな風味で有名です。

Because lemons are so deeply embedded in the livelihood of Onomichi people, it is unsurprising that many famous local foods feature citrus flavors and lemon products!

Follow me on my visit to Onomichi in this four-part series where I will recommend some highlights for exploring the Downtown City, Island Hopping, Local Cuisine, and the Setouchi Seaplanes!

Where is Onomichi?
尾道はどこにありますか？

Onomichi (尾道) is a quaint seaside town facing the Seto Inland Sea in eastern Hiroshima. Although it is the 4^th largest city in Hiroshima Prefecture with a population of over 150,000 people, it certainly does not feel like it when you set foot on the sidewalks of this nostalgic port town.

尾道は、広島東部の瀬戸内海に面した趣のある海辺の町です。 人口15万人を超える広島県で4番目に大きい都市ですが、このどこか懐かしさと感じる港町の歩道に足を踏み入れたとき、それは確かにそのようには感じません。

Welcome to Onomichi City!

Access to Onomichi is surprisingly easy!

Initially, I thought that it would be complicated and require me changing various modes of transport, but the trains take you right to the city center. From Tokyo, the total travel time was just under 4 hours.

尾道へのアクセスは驚くほど簡単です！

最初は、それは複雑で、さまざまな交通手段を乗り換える必要があると思っていましたが、電車はすぐに市内中心部に連れて行ってくれます。 東京からの総移動時間は4時間ぐらいでした。

Onomichi Station has just been renovated earlier this year, and looks brand new!

尾道駅は今年の初めに改装されたばかりで、新しくなりました！

Climb up to the second story of the station and you can have a great view over the city.

Just a stone’s throw away from Onomichi Station is the city’s main shopping street!

Along this street, you can explore a wide variety of stores and restaurants.

From Ooban-yaki (大判焼き, a kind of Japanese crepe with various filling options), to locally produced jams and authentic fishcakes, dozens of specialty stores appeal to your taste buds!

大判焼きから、地元産のジャムや新鮮なかまぼこまで、数十の専門店があなたの味覚に訴えます！

I really enjoyed visiting the 106-year-old Keima Kamaboko fishcake shop. The fishcakes are made from fresh Setouchi fish including Guchi (Croaker), Hamo (Conger), Eso (Lizardfishes), and small squid caught from nearby waters!

私は、106年以上の歴史を持つ「桂馬かまぼこ」を訪れるのを本当に楽しみにしていました。 かまぼこは、近くの海で獲れたグチ、ハモ、エソ、小さなイカなどの新鮮な瀬戸内海の魚で作られています！

When you buy some fishcakes, you can heat them up and enjoy them at the nearby eating space provided for customers. We tried some Kakiten, persimmon-shaped fried kamaboko (fishcakes) and they were delicious! No wonder that it is their bestselling item.

桂馬かまぼこを購入したら、それを加熱して、顧客に提供している近くの食事スペースで楽しむことができます。 尾道名物「柿天」を食べてみました~ 美味しかったです！ それが一番人気の商品であることはなるほど納得ですね！

尾道名物　柿天 桂馬初代・村上桂造が秋の風物詩「吊るし柿」の姿を写し創作したかまぼこです。

お魚の旨味の中にほんのり甘みを生かした桂馬蒲鉾元祖の柿天。

たくさんのお客様に愛され、尾道ならではの美味しいもの、尾道名物のひとつへと育てていただきました。

Do not miss your chance to hold a REAL samurai sword at the Yamasaki Kiyoharu Knife and Sword Store! It was my first time holding an authentic Samurai sword – not only was it super sharp, but it was also a lot heavier than I expected despite being so thin!

「包丁・鋏・刀剣販売　刃物の山崎清春商店」で本物の侍の刀を握るチャンスをお見逃しなく！

本物の「刀」を手にしたのは初めてです。非常に鋭いだけでなく、また細いにもかかわらず、予想以上に重いものでした。

Sora has two options for visitors to the studio – you can either try your hands at an electric potter’s wheel, or make a cat figurine!

Soraには、スタジオを訪れる人のための2つのオプションがあります。それは電動ろくろで自分の腕を試すか、または猫の置物を作るかのどちらかを選ぶことができます。

I worked with pottery studio owner Fujimoto-san to design and paint my own ceramic cat figurine. It was my first time working on clay in this way, and it was a lot of fun! Whenever I had any trouble, Fujimoto-san would come in and help me fix it up right away. Unfortunately, I think my cat still turned out rather disproportionate (body is too big and fat, tails and legs are too short!)… haha

陶芸工房のオーナーである藤本善史さんと一緒に、自分の陶製の猫の置物をデザインしてペイントしました。 このように粘土を扱うのは初めてで、とても楽しかったです！ 困ったときはいつでも、藤本さんが来てすぐに直してくれました。 残念ながら、私の猫の出来よりまだかなりバランスが悪いと思います… （体が大きすぎて太く、尾と足が短すぎるでしょう！）

About a 5-minute walk away from the Onomichi Station is U2, a paradise for cyclists at the gateway to the Shimanami Sea Route (Nishi-Seto Expressway)!

Formerly a shipyard warehouse built in 1947, it was renovated and re-opened as a chic hotel, café, bakery, bar, lifestyle, and cycling shop in March 2014.

U2 is located next to the Onomichi Channel with beautiful waterfront views!

The opening of U2 along the theme of “cycling, travel, and good things” not only made Onomichi a haven for cyclists, but also attracted art, design and architecture lovers from around the world to the once-sleepy coastal town.

「サイクリング、旅行、良いもの」をテーマにしたU2のオープンは、尾道をサイクリストの天国にするためだけでなく、世界中の芸術、デザイン、建築愛好家をかつて眠っていた海岸の町に惹きつけました。

Witness Onomichi’s History

尾道の歴史を観る

Onomichi was safe from most of the destruction during the World Wars, and as a result, there is a sense that you are transported back in time when you step foot in this untouched “Small Kyoto of the West.” The coastal town is maze-like characterized by many slopes, long staircases, and shrines up and around which the town winds.

尾道は、第二次世界大戦の破壊から免れました。その結果、この手つかずの「西の小京都」に足を踏み入れると、時間を遡れるという感覚があります。海岸沿いの町は迷路のようです 多くの斜面、長い階段、そしてその周りに神社があり、上がり街が見えることが特徴です。

Onomichi’s famous Temple Walk, for example, will take visitors up and down the slopes as it leads past the route’s 25 temples.

たとえば、尾道の有名な古寺巡りは、25の寺院を訪れる際は、訪問者は坂を上ったり下ったりします。

Following the path of one of these slopes, we chased dusk up the Mount Senkoji Ropeway~

At the top of the ropeway, a Lover’s Sanctuary and panoramic views await.

As you breathe in the cool sea breeze, feel refreshed with waterfront views over rooftops and temple gardens that heal the soul just like looking at a watercolor painting.

涼しい海風を感じて、水彩画を見ているかのように心を癒す屋上や寺院の庭園のウォーターフロントの景色でリフレッシュしてください。

Like fireflies in the night: the evening view of the port’s townscape clinging to steep slopes await you after the sun sets.

ホタルのように：日没後、急な斜面にある港町の夕景がとても綺麗です。

Whether you hop on a bicycle and actively explore the islands, or just stroll along the boardwalk and breathe in the ocean breeze, it is truly a magical experience to get lost and wander around Onomichi City.

Even when you feel like you have lost your way, just head towards the seaside and everything will work out beautifully!

Where to eat out in Onomichi! 

Overlooking the city scape of Onomichi from the nearby island, many boats and sea cranes are reminiscent of a former era of prosperity, when the town was a bustling trade center within the Setouchi Inland Sea.

Onomichi Ramen

Perhaps one of the most popular local dishes is Onomichi-style ramen, with many popular noodle shops having long queues during lunch hours!

おそらく最も人気のある郷土料理の1つは尾道ラーメンで、ランチタイムにはたくさんのラーメン屋さんに長い行列ができます！
 

Kuishinbo Senryo is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk away from Onomichi station on the main shopping street, – perfect for your first meal when you arrive or a quick slurp just before you have to catch the train!

昭和63年創業の「くいしん坊　千両」は、尾道の本通り商店街にある老舗ラーメン店です。尾道駅に到着した時に最初の食事をしたり、電車に乗る直前に急いで食べるのに最適でしょう。

Onomichi ramen is made from a clear soup consisting of stock drawn from small fish in the Seto Inland Sea with added soy sauce, and firm crimped noodles. With toppings such as the signature pork back-fat, it has a refreshing and rich flavor.

If you go Island Hopping around the Onomichi area, especially in Autumn and Winter, you will notice bright patches of yellow and orange everywhere as many farmers grow lemons and other citrus fruits! Onomichi has nurtured a rich food culture owing to the temperate climate unique to the Seto Inland Sea, which also provides the ideal environment to grow lemons.

秋か冬に尾道周辺の島巡りをすると、多くの農家がレモンや他の柑橘類を栽培しているため、どこでも黄色とオレンジの明るいパッチワークのような模様が見えます！ 尾道は、レモンを栽培するのに最適な瀬戸内海特有の温暖な気候により、豊かな食文化を育んでいます。

In fact, Ikuchijima along the Shimanami Kaido Expressway is the leading producer of domestically grown lemons! History goes that local farmers started producing lemons that were both tasty and safe to compete against imported lemons saturating the market, establishing what is now known as the Setoda Lemon brand. Setoda lemons are popular in Japan for their mild taste and refreshing fragrance!

In addition to producing lemons, Onomichi is also home to a wide range of lemon products, from juice to baked goods and pastas.

Lemon sweets are a must-try in Onomichi, and the lemon cakes at Shimagocoro are very famous!

The Inland Sea is known as one of the best fishing grounds in Japan, as nutrients flow into it from the mountain rivers of surrounding Honshu and Shikoku. This makes the nearby waters rich in plankton, which serve as food for its fish. Local fishermen say that the distinctively strong tides of the Seto Inland Sea firm up the fish and increase their flavor.

瀬戸内海は、本州と四国を取り巻く山や川から養分が流入するため、日本で最高の漁場の1つとして知られています。 これにより、近くの水はプランクトンが豊富になり、魚の餌となります。 地元の漁師は、瀬戸内海の独特の強い潮流が魚の身をしめ、風味が増すと言います。

Komedoko Shukudo is a favorite amongst the locals for modern dining in a sophisticated atmosphere.

「こめどこ食堂」は、洗練された雰囲気の中でモダンな食事を楽しむ地元の人々のお気に入りです。

The dinner course uses products sourced locally, with fish, vegetables, meat, and rice all supporting local fishermen and farmers.

ディナーコースでは地元の製品を使用し、魚、野菜、肉、米をすべて地元の漁師や農家に提供しています。

Their specialty dish is the Japanese clay pot rice with seasonal ingredients, using rice from Ittokumai. The rice is especially delicious as it has been infused with dashi from the fish!

名物料理は、季節の土鍋の炊き込みご飯です。 ご飯は魚の出汁をふんだんに使っているので特に美味しいです！

For those who appreciate farm-to-table dining, Komedoko Shukudo warmly welcomes visitors to discover local produce while eating out with the delicate sheen of an artful antique.

「こめどこ食堂」は、地産地消の食事を好む方のために、訪れた人たちを温かく迎えます。私たちはここで地元の美味しい食材を発見できます。

“Shell” we get a drink?

If you ask any Onomichi local for the “shell bar,” you will inevitably be pointed the way to Rodin.

尾道の地元住民に「貝の店」を尋ねると、必然的に「ロダン」を教えてくれます。

You know you have arrived at the front of the bar when you see a huge “shell” sign. At first, I thought I was being led to a petrol pump station!

巨大な「SHELL」の看板が見えると、バーの前に着いたことがわかります。 最初は、ガソリンスタンドに案内されていると思ってしまいました！

Entering the bar, my eyes popped wide open in astonishment at the mind-blowing collection of sea creatures and other gadgets on display!

バーに入ると、目を見張るような海の生き物や展示されているその他のガジェット（小道具）のコレクションに驚きました！

“Master of Shells”: Mr. and Mrs. Ishikawa fell in love with their shared passion for the ocean.
Rodin has been opened for 56 years since the year they got married! How romantic~!

「貝殻の達人」：石川夫妻は、海洋に関する共通の話題で情熱的に恋をしました。
「ロダン」は、結婚してから56年間オープンしています！ なんてロマンチックでしょう〜！

The bar features a staggering numbers of beautiful shells that they have collected over the years from all over the world. One of their favorite destinations is Cebu in the Philippines.

バーには、世界中から長年にわたって集めてきた驚くべき数の美しい貝殻があります。 ご夫妻のお気に入りの場所の1つは、フィリピンのセブ島です。

Fun fact: The Ishikawa’s home is above their bar, and their son owns the bar next door called Roost!

Even after leaving Onomichi, the port town has left a warm glow in my heart. I already cannot wait to re-visit the city that has so tastefully blended aspects of modern Japan with the warmth of its local residents who live in tranquility, overlooking the sea.

中山道の、人里離れた芭蕉で日本の歴史を探究しましょう！

The Nakasendo Way

中仙道について

The Nakasendo or ‘Road through the Central Mountains’ was part of feudal Japan’s network of highways connecting Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) over an inland route that passed 500 kilometers (310 miles) through the heart of Japan’s main island of Honshu.

In the past, travelers took several days (if not weeks) to travel the Nakasendo moving from Kyoto to Edo, staying overnight in Juku post towns. Today’s visitors have a wide choice of various walking tours where they can walk, hike, or even run across sections of the original route by day and stay in local inns by night.

中山道（なかせんどう）は、江戸時代の五街道の一つで、江戸の日本橋と京都の三条大橋を内陸経由で結ぶ街道である。

その昔、旅人は京都から江戸まで中山道に点在する宿場町に泊まりながら、数週間かけて旅しました。

今日、この中山道を体験する為に、我々にはウォーキングツアーなどの様々な選択肢があります。
中山道旧道を歩いたり、ハイキングしたり、あるいは走ったり、宿場町での夜は当時の面影を残す旅館に泊まることもできます。

The Western section of the Nakasendo trail near Kyoto and Nagoya is now more developed and overlaid with train lines and modern roads.

中山道の西側区間である京都から名古屋の周辺にかけては、現在、近代化が進み、線路や高速道路が整備されています。

To explore the original Nakasendo, I visited the Eastern stretch above Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture. This section of the Nakasendo runs through areas of Japan that have been less transformed by economic growth and change, where much of the highway has been preserved and still remains much the same now as two hundred years ago!

In this blogpost, I will share my top highlights and recommendations from my visit.

私は、いにしえの中山道を体感する為、長野県の軽井沢から「東信州の中山道」を旅しました。東信州の中山道周辺は、経済成長による近代化の波に流されことなく、昔ながらの「田舎」が守られ200年前の風景が多く残っています。

今回のブログでは、東信州中山道のおすすめポイントを色々紹介いたします！

History of Nakasendo
中仙道の歴史

The Edo regime or shogunate (named after the leader’s title, “shogun”) moved quickly after the last battle of national unification at Sekigahara to establish a communication system that would allow the regime to move quickly and efficiently messages, personnel, diplomatic missions, spies, and important goods to or from Edo throughout the empire. Five highways including the Nakasendo were designated for this purpose.

日本最後の国家統一の戦いとも言われる「関ヶ原の戦い」の後、江戸幕府は迅速かつ効率的に情報を伝達させるのに、人（侍、商人、間者、外交使節団等）の行き来による通信システムを即座に構築しました。
それは日本全国と江戸との重要な取引を意味し、この目的のために、中山道を含む5つの街道が指定されました。

Of the five, the Tokaido following the Pacific coastline was the largest, busiest, and most famous. The present-day Tokaido Expressway and the Tokaido Shinkansen connecting the Kanto (Tokyo area) and Kansai (Osaka / Kyoto / Kobe) regions largely follow this route.

江戸から始まる5つの街道のうち、太平洋の海岸線を進む東海道は、最も多くの人が行き交うことで有名でした。
現在の東名高速道路と、関東（東京）と関西（大阪/京都/神戸）を結ぶ東海道新幹線はこのルートにほぼ沿っています。

“Princess Highway”

Nakasendo was the second main highway, but it was longer and more cumbersome as the road went through the mountains inland and travelers had to cross various steep mountain passes.

Nevertheless, the Nakasendo was considered the safer route as the Tokaido, being close to the sea, was hampered by wide and dangerous rivers to cross. In particular, Japanese aristocratic women preferred using the Nakasendo trail as servants carried them in kago litters. The difficulty of climbing up mountain passes did not concern them, whereas a treacherous river crossing would.

For this reason, the Nakasendo was also called Hime Kaido, or “Princess Highway.”

「姫街道」

中山道は東海道に次いで主要な街道でしたが、街道が内陸の山々を通過する為、旅人はいくつもの急な峠道を通らなければならず、長く歩きにくい道でした。

それにも関わらず、海沿いを進み河口近くの広く危険な川を渡る必要がある東海道に比べ、中山道はその危険を避けることができたため、より安全なルートと考えられていました。

川の横断では流される危険があるのに対し、山を登る方がそれほど困難ではない為です。

特に、日本の貴族の女性は、使用人がかつぐ駕籠（かご）に乗って移動した為、安全な中山道を通ることを好みました。このため、中山道は「姫街道」とも呼ばれていました。

Next to a kago litter, which women traveled in during the Edo period. I could not believe how small the kago were and cannot imagine how little the women had to be to fit into the kago litters comfortably! I feel like such a giant in comparison!

Kumanokotai Shrine
熊野皇大神社

The Kumanokotai Shrine is located on the old Nakasendo Way up to the Usui pass. This shrine is particularly unique thanks to its location, where the front approach to the shrine and the center of the main shrine are located on the border line of Nagano and Gunma Prefecture!

Due to this unique location, the shrine actually has two names, “Kumanokotai Shrine” and “Kumano Shrine”, respective to each prefecture. The shrine thus has two shrine maidens, who separately dedicate each of their own prayer ritual to the shrine, as well as two lucky charms, two red shrine seals, two shrine offices and etc., which all separately belong to each of the shrines.

熊野皇大神社は、旧中山道、旧碓井峠にあります。
この神社はロケーションがユニークで、神社の正面玄関と本殿の中心が長野と群馬県の境界線に位置しています。

この為、一つの神社でありながら県境を挟んで長野県側が熊野皇大神社、群馬県側が熊野神社という2つの名前があります。
従いそれぞれ独自の祈りの儀式を神社に捧げる2人の巫女と、2種の幸運のお守り、2種の御朱印、そして、神社の事務所も2つあり、
これらはすべて別々に各神社に属しています。

Usui Pass Observation Point　
碓氷峠見晴台

Near the Kumanokotai/Kumano Shrine, the Usui Pass Observation Platform (碓氷峠見晴台, Usui Tōge Miharashidai) straddles the border of Gunma and Nagano Prefectures.

Beautiful views over the mountains of Gunma Prefecture on one side and Mount Asama on the other side can be enjoyed from this observation platform!

熊野皇大神社の近くには、群馬県と長野県の境にある碓氷峠見晴台があります。

この展望台からは、群馬県の山々の美しい景色と反対側の浅間山を楽しむことができます！

Wada Post Town Honjin
和田宿本陣

Post-towns (Juku) were spaced out along the old highways of Japan for the convenience of travelers.

The Nakasendo had 69 post towns between its two ends – Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo and Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto.

「宿」（じゅく）は、旅人の便宜のために日本の旧街道に沿って間隔をあけて配置されました。

中山道の始まりと終わりは、江戸の日本橋と京都の三条大橋であり、この間69の宿場町がありました。

Wada Post Town in Nagawa Town, Nagano Prefecture served as the 28th Post Station from Edo on the Nakasendo.

Today it is a very well-maintained and restored late Edo era post town surrounded by a scenic rural landscape located halfway between Karuizawa and Suwa cities.

長野県長和町「和田宿」は、中山道の始まりである江戸日本橋から数えて28番目の宿でした。

今日では、軽井沢と諏訪湖がある諏訪市との中間に位置する風光明媚な田園風景に囲まれた街にあり、
その一部に江戸時代後期の街並みが再現され保存されています。

Wada is situated close to the steep Wada Toge Pass (1600 meters), one of the highest and toughest parts of the Nakasendo. Travelers tended to stay in Wada to either prepare for the hike over the pass or to rest after their journey passing it. Therefore, the rest houses at Wada were much more numerous and upscale than other post towns.

和田宿は、中山道で最も標高が高く険しい峠の1つである和田峠（1600メートル）の麓（ふもと）にあります。
旅行者は、この宿場に立ち寄り宿泊することで、峠をこれから越えるための準備をするか、峠を通過した後に休むか… の２つの選択が可能でした。
したがって、和田宿は他の宿場町よりも宿泊施設がはるかに多く、高級でした。

Wada Shuku Honjin

和田宿本陣

At any historic post station, the Honjin was the guest house in which the highest dignitaries stayed. It was reserved for members of the Imperial family, high-ranking government officials and provincial feudal lords. In Wada Post Town, the Honjin had originally been built for the trip of Princess Kazunomiya to her wedding in Edo in 1862. These buildings have been classified as a national treasure.

和田宿本陣は、文久元年（1862年）3月の大火で焼失したが、同年11月の皇女和宮隆嫁にそなえてただちに再建された。その後明治期に座敷棟は丸子町龍願寺へ、また座敷棟の正面にあった御入門は丸子町向陽院へと、それぞれ移築された。これらの建物は国宝に分類されています。

These days, the Wada Shuku Honjin has been turned into a museum and is open to the public.

I very much enjoyed my visit as touring the Honjin provides impressive insights into the lifestyle of upper class Edo society!

現在、和田宿本陣は博物館になって一般公開されています。

本陣には現地に暮らす専門ガイドが駐在しており陣内を案内します。ここでは江戸時代における上流階級のライフスタイルやその背景にあるエピソードについて細かく解説し、訪れたお客様に印象的な時間を演出してくれるので、色々な勉強になり、とても楽しかったです！

For example, there were numerous rooms in the Honjin to accommodate travelers, but the room in which the highest-ranking member of the traveling party stayed had a considerably higher ceiling than all other rooms.

たとえば、本陣には参勤交代の役人が宿泊するために多数の部屋がありましたが、最上位の人たちが滞在した部屋は他のすべての部屋よりもかなり高い天井になっていました。

There is also a luxury toilet! You may be wondering whwat the wooden beam is for.

I had assumed that it might have been to hold onto while using the toilet, but it is actually designed to keep the kimonos of dignitaries from getting dirty!

また、位が高い人たちの着物が汚れないように設計された片側に木製の梁を備えた豪華なトイレがあったりしました。

Throughout the Honjin, you can explore showcases of documents and artifacts relating to the history of the Honjin and past visitors.

また、内部には当時の歴史や習慣が垣間見れる古い文書や手紙、工芸品がショーケースに収容されており、自由に閲覧することができます。

he second floor displayed various kago litters, which women traveled in during the Edo period. I could not believe how small the kago were and cannot imagine how little the women had to be to fit into the kago litters comfortably!

2階には、江戸時代に女性（お姫様）が乗った駕籠が飾られていました。私は、その駕籠の小ささに非常に驚かされました。この駕籠のサイズに江戸時代の女性たちが快適に座っていたとしたらどれだけ小さくて背が低かったのか、私には想像することができませんでした！

Nagato Farm
長門牧場

It was great to make a stop at the Nagato Farm on the Shinshu Hakuho Plateau!

At an altitude of 1,400 meters, this vast farm has 211 hectares of pasture to raise over 200 dairy cows. That is 45x the size of Tokyo Dome!

The fresh milk processed on the farm is sold directly to customers in their shop and restaurants.

信州白樺高原にある「長門牧場」にも立ち寄ることができて良かったと思います。！

標高1,400メートルのこの広大な農場には211ヘクタール（なんと東京ドームの45個分の大きさですよ！）の牧草地を有し、牧場で乳牛200頭を飼育しています。

ここで搾られる良質で新鮮な生乳を使用して牧場内で加工された数々の乳製品が、お店やレストランで牧場を訪れるお客様に直接販売されています。

About the Akita Dog

The Akita is a large and powerful dog breed with a noble and intimidating presence. They were originally used for guarding royalty and nobility in feudal Japan. The Akita does not back down from challenges and does not frighten easily. Consequently, they are fearless and loyal guardians of their families. Yet they are also affectionate, respectful, and amusing dogs when properly trained and socialized.

FIRST ENCOUNTER
最初の出会い

The famous Hachiko, whose statue is erected in front of Shibuya station, was born at a farm in Odate before he was brought to Tokyo. Hachiko’s story is the ideal example representing how Akita Dogs are known for their extreme loyalty to their owners.

有名なハチ公は、東京に連れて行かれる前に大館の農家で生まれました。 ハチ公の話は、秋田犬が飼い主に対して忠誠心が非常に高いことで知られていることを示す典型的な例でしょう。
