The first signs of spring offer promise of new life and warmer, lighter days. After another uncertain winter season shadowed by COVID-19, many have looked forward to springtime flowers and the first warmth of the year.

I have written on my experience of hanami, the age-old Japanese tradition of spring flower viewing, a couple of times in the past, such as in articles “OHANAMI 2018: KIMONO EXPERIENCE & CHIDORIGAFUCHI BOAT” and “THE ARRIVAL OF HANAMI SEASON”. You really cannot miss the hanami experience in Japan – even after several years, I am still amazed by how it becomes the main topic of conversation during this festive period and everyone seems to take it so seriously. The local news channels even make detailed reports on “Cherry Blossom Forecasts” that attract a lot of attention in lieu of the standard weather forecasts! An example is weather forecaster WEATHERMAP Co., Ltd., which gathers data from over 2 million reports and forecasts from the past 2 decades to form “the most accurate predictions possible.”

Uncle James, my mother’s eldest brother, passed away from colon cancer this Spring. Unfortunately, we only found out about his condition when the cancer had already progressed to Stage 4. Although the doctor had initially told him he only had another 2 months to live upon diagnosis, he fought for many more months after that.

Singapore has a tropical climate and it is essentially summer and hot all year on the island-state. Uncle James had always wanted to see hanami in Japan, and hoped that he could visit once he was well enough to travel. Unfortunately, it was not possible for him to visit.

My uncle and aunt met almost 50 years ago. They were each other’s’ first loves and high school sweethearts, and were dedicated to each other until the very end.

In this article, I wish to share five lessons I learned from my uncle’s last moments. My purpose is to have this article serve as a reminder for myself of these reflections, and hopefully it may be helpful for others. No doubt many of us experienced some form of loss during these two years of the pandemic.

Even when he was sick, Uncle James always put care and empathy for others above his own. Even after falling from the great tree of this life, he was ever prepared for his death by having calmly understood and accepted the ancient wisdom that everything we see and experience is impermanent. Although many are grieved by the absence of him, his wish was always to remember that we should celebrate the spark and vitality of his life, while also taking a moment to appreciate the meaning and depth of our own.

My uncle chose to have his ashes scattered in this serene garden to return to the earth and complete his journey. By choosing to scatter his ashes in a garden, the image of beauty and happiness he has shared with those around him remains long after the physical body passes.

It is said that cherry blossoms are also associated with “funerals” because of their fleetingness along with the image of exuberant “festivities” such as hanami. Perhaps they are nature’s annual reminder that all that we enjoy in one instant can always fall away in the next, and we should take time to cherish what we have.

Life doesn’t return to normal after the death of a family member or friend, and like the blossoms that burst into bloom every Spring and vanish just as suddenly, the experience causes us to redefine life in a new and profound way.

Nowadays, Hanami is most often associated with Sakura cherry blossoms, but did you know that the “original” hanami was with plum blossoms? In early Spring about a month before the cherry blossoms bloom, new life is stirs and buds appear on ume, also known as plum blossom trees or Japanese apricots.

One of the latest projects the SeiRogai team have been working on are a series of VR360 virtual tours of Japan. We believe that in our post-corona world, there is great demand for exclusive VR experiences of unique places in Japan. One of the virtual tours we filmed recently was in collaboration with Fuchu City and the Fuchu Kyodonomori Municipal Museum, featuring a beautiful experience of over 1,100 plum trees!

Although my uncle’s wish to experience hanami in person was not granted during his lifetime, I feel grateful knowing that in the future, we can utilize VR360 technology to provide such experiences to others similarly unable to travel. The immersive virtual tour contents that we have been filming now would enable viewers to visit, interact with, and learn about different places right from their very home. Age, health, disability, cost, time, or language should no longer be barriers or constraints to experience travelling around Japan and the world.

We filmed a VR360 virtual tour of the annual plum flower festival and the historical buildings on the museum grounds. We aim not only to share a spectacular experience of the flowers and promote the attractions of Fuchu City, a Western suburb of Tokyo, but also provide a content platform aligned with ESG and SDG initiatives.

Due to halted travel during the pandemic, the effects of over-tourism became apparent and highlighted the need for sustainable travel to preserve treasured tourist destinations. With the reemergence of travel after years of COVID-19 restrictions, people are valuing connecting to local cultures, nature, and communities more than ever.

Through educational movie-style virtual tour experiences, not only can we enable equitable access to travel (including for the elderly and disabled) while meeting the needs for tourists, but we can also reduce the carbon footprint and prevent overtourism, all the while increasing the brand value and recognition of rural areas of Japan with their distinct local cultures and histories.

Since I moved to Japan in 2017, I have presented the annual Harvard Prize Book on behalf of the Harvard Club at various high schools in Japan. The awards ceremony is typically held at the end of the school year between March to June. Last year, with the onset of the global pandemic, it was not possible to hold in-person ceremonies as non-essential businesses were shut down, and people were urged to stay home and socially distance to slow the spread of the then-novel coronavirus. Although many schools had to cancel their ceremonies, I was glad to be still able to speak to the 2019 winner of Junten High School, Miss Yoshino Kanauchi

Rachel Leng's speech representing the Harvard Club of Japan to Winners of the 2020 Harvard Prize Books in Spring of 2021.

Dear Winner of the Harvard Prize Book, Congratulations!

Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.

As someone who has achieved success in many different areas, you should be proud of yourself. I hope that you will consider the opportunities at Harvard and studying liberal arts.

2020 was a difficult year for many of us. The impact of the coronavirus makes it tough to plan for an uncertain future.

When I graduated high school and was considering being the first in my family to go to college, it was in 2008 and during the global financial crisis at that time. It was not the best year for international students to consider going to the U.S., and although I was worried about going so far away from my family and my home to venture to a foreign country alone, I took a chance and applied anyway, thinking I would never get in.

However, to my surprise, I received an offer and pursued a liberal arts education. Although I have faced many challenges since then, I have never regretted it.

I cannot imagine what it is like to be in high school during this covid pandemic - perhaps many of you will feel insecure about the future, intimidated by expectations and fearful of the unknown. I am telling you this because, even now, I sometimes feel the same way.

Throughout history, uncertainty and global crises have happened before, and might happen again in the future. COVID will also come to pass.

When it does, YOU are the generation that will be leading our future in the post-COVID new normal. Stay positive – you are not alone.

I can understand it must be confusing for any of you to consider studying overseas when so many travel restrictions are in place. Nonetheless, I have always believed that with great challenges comes great opportunities.

In fact, the best time to try new things is during times like this when nobody can tell what the future will be. So, even if you try something really crazy and it fails, everything is changing anyway, and there really is no right or wrong!

Take every opportunity to try new things, even if you think they may never succeed. Who knows – it may lead you to discover something you might have thought was impossible before!

Ultimately, this pandemic has made a lot more people reflect on what is truly important.
I’ve learned, that as people get older, they tend to think back on their younger years to figure out their dreams and life passions. However, by then it is often too late, and they regret having lost precious time. In contrast, you can do it now!

Take some time to think about the changes you would like to see in the world, and what you can do towards achieving that goal. You can start small – even just in your local community!

As nobody knows what the post-covid future will be, it is even more important to realize that a good plan today is better than an excellent plan months or years from now. What you do now, WILL make an impact in your future.

I would like to leave you with a challenge – as we enter an ever-connected digital era, it is a contradiction that so many people find themselves isolated and alone. Take a moment every day to reach out to someone – whether they are your loved ones, your schoolmates, or even those that you’ve had a falling out with! Many times, your actions may not have immediate results, but in the long run, you will be amazed to find how important those seemingly insignificant human connections may be.

As your semester comes to a close, it is my wish to all of you that you continue to stay ambitious, encouraged, resilient, and above all, hopeful.
In the spirit of the Harvard Prize Book, the more that you read, write, learn, and experience, the more you will come to know and the further you will go.

Congratulations again, and good luck!!

Jan is a citizen of the Czech Republic who attended elementary school in Prague during Grades 1-4. In 2014, he and his family moved to Yokohama, where they have lived ever since, and he entered Grade 5 at Saint Maur. He quickly adjusted to life in a new environment as well as an unfamiliar language, and he has been an excellent student and an active participant in sports, music, speech, and drama throughout his years here. (Impressively, he speaks Czech, English, Japanese, and Spanish.)

Jan’s academic interests at the university level include European Law, International Law, Politics, and Environmental Issues. He is currently investigating higher education in the European Union (E.U.) and is considering both research universities and liberal arts colleges.

Reflections

Harvard Alumni originated the Harvard Book Prize Awards Program in 1910 as part of an effort to attract the attention of talented students to the opportunities at the university. Today, more than 1900 Prize Books, sponsored by local Alumni, are awarded in schools worldwide.

As an alumni presenter of the Harvard Book Prize Awards and a member of the Harvard Club of Japan committee, I wish to encourage more students to think broadly about where they apply to college. While admission to Harvard is perceived as very competitive, it does seek out talented students around the world, and I do genuinely believe one will never know their full potential if they do not take risks and try new things, even if it may seem impossible to achieve at the start.

In Japan, I have noticed that many students still choose to pursue their college studies domestically in Japan, opting only for a study abroad stint rather than to challenge completing their full B.A. degree at a university abroad. However, such a short study abroad or exchange program, or limiting their consideration of studying overseas to only graduate school, is simply not the same. It cannot replace the experience of studying in a new country during one’s formative college years, as those years have tremendous potential to shape one’s future decisions and opportunities. As someone who has experienced this in my own life personally, I am a firm believer and advocate for students to gain immersive experience and exposure to living in different countries and cultures at a younger age.

It may take some time, but I sincerely wish to see more students from Japan take the leap to pursue a liberal arts education.

What are your thoughts on this? Send me an email and let me know!

Congratulations again. You should be very proud of yourself, not only for the Harvard Prize Book, but truly for all of your amazing achievements so far. I am sure you will continue to be very successful if you keep following your present direction.

To the rest of the students here today, I want to encourage all of you to follow the example of the HPB winner, but also to embark on your own journey and create your own story. Everyone has different experiences, and what works for one person may not have the same results for another.

To find your own path, you will need to follow your heart. You will have to step out of your comfort zone, even when you are not confident, to try new things and explore different ways of seeing the world.

Do not be afraid to take more challenges, as the journey and exposure will surely open your mind and provide you new adventures and opportunities. Never stop being curious and learning about anything and everything around you.

Living in Tokyo, a truly cosmopolitan city, you are very lucky to have access to so many resources that other people around the world do not. For example, people from all walks of life and all over the world gather here. Go out and meet more of them.

In fact, meet as many people as you can – you never know how the next person you meet could change your life – they could become a close friend, a mentor, a role model, someone you could learn from, or someone you could teach…

You will encounter many different things, many of which you will not like or realize is just not for you. That is perfectly fine! It is as important to find out what you do not like, as it is to find out what you do like.

To conclude, I would like to encourage all of you to challenge yourself to do something new every day. For example, speak to someone new every day, learn something new every day, or even something simple like watch a new show about a different country.

Remember, the only difference between an obstacle and an opportunity is our attitude towards it.

Every opportunity has an obstacle, and every obstacle has an opportunity.

It is up to you to create your own opportunities, your own luck, and your own version of a success story.

About the Harvard Prize Book

Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. Harvard Prize Books are presented annually in nearly 2,000 high schools around the world. In Japan, about 20 schools participate in the program. Prize Books are an important way for Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups (SIGs)　to help attract the attention of talented young students to the opportunities at Harvard College and studying liberal arts.

Junten High School has been awarding Harvard Prize Books annually since 2014. This year, there were many contenders for the Prize. The final winner selected was Mr. Takeru Ohmura　(大村武尊), who has demonstrated great persistence and determination in pursuing his passion for studying hospitality.

Mr. Takeru Ohmura　(大村武尊) is the Winner of Harvard Prize Book 2017 at Junten High School

Congratulations Mr. Takeru Ohmura for his excellent achievement! It was an honor to present him with the Harvard Prize Books and learn about all of his ambitions. At such a young age, Mr. Omura has already had the experience of studying hospitality over his summer breaks in the UK and Switzerland. Although he had applied for the prestigious Tobitate Japan study abroad program sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), he was regrettably not accepted. However, rather than letting this outcome discourage him, Mr. Omura managed to turn the experience around by being even more motivated to pursue self-study and achieve the same exposure. I truly wish him all the best and that he can achieve his dream of studying hospitality management at the Glion Institute of Higher Education.

To conclude the Harvard Prize Book Award Ceremony, I addressed the high school student body and gave a short speech sharing my views on the importance of being globally minded and how a liberal arts education can provide important and life-changing opportunities. (I have also spoken and written on this in a previous blog post on “The Appeal of Liberal Arts リベラルアーツの魅力”) I hope that more students will be encouraged to go abroad and widen their horizons.

Harvard Prize Book

After the Award Ceremony, I also had a discussion session with the winner and two runner-ups for the Harvard Prize Book. The other top contenders for the prize included a girl who studied abroad in Australia and is keen on pursuing politics and diplomacy, as well as another boy who discovered his passion for literature and writing after spending time living abroad. We spoke about their dreams and aspirations, and I once again emphasized the importance of a global education and encouraged them to actively learn and pursue their goals.

Related, I was honored to be interviewed and featured by the Overseas Singaporean Unit on their official media in an article on “Giving Back Through Mentorship” and “Contributing from Afar: Rachel Leng”! The OSU in the Prime Minister’s Office is part of the Government of Singapore’s efforts to engage its citizens overseas (under the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth).

To date, I have mentored students and young professionals in China, Japan, South Korea and the United States (U.S.) in areas ranging from leadership to global careers.

For me, mentoring is a way for me to come full circle, from starting out as a college student at Duke University, to my various appointments around the globe. Such experiences have given me unique insight into how my life has been shaped by them.

As I reflected on my own experiences, I became increasingly passionate about ‘paying it forward’ as a mentor. It can be difficult for anyone to build experience and enhance their potential without knowing about available opportunities or how to access them. Mentoring is therefore an effective way to offer opportunities, information, insight and resources to others who could benefit from them. I hope to continue and improve on this for years to come!
