When I think back to my first travels around Japan, I honestly had no idea just how much those
experiences would change the course of my life.

最初に日本を旅したとき、まさかあの体験が、ここまで自分の人生を変えることになるなん
て、その時は本当に想像もしていませんでした。

I wasn’t fluent in Japanese, didn’t have a clear plan, and definitely didn’t imagine I’d end up building a
media and business company here. But what I did have was a sense of wonder.

日本語もほとんど話せず、明確なキャリアプランもなくて、まさか自分が日本でメディアとビ
ジネスの会社を立ち上げることになるとは思ってもいませんでした。でも、当時の私には、強

The Allure of Japan Discovered in the Countryside

地方で出会った日本の魅力

As I visited small towns, met locals, and learned about the stories behind traditions, crafts, and places—some of which even Japanese people don’t always know about—I found myself falling in love with a side of Japan that felt incredibly deep and meaningful.

地方の小さな町を巡って、そこで暮らす人たちと出会い、伝統文化や工芸、土地にまつわるさまざまなお話を聞く中で、時には、日本の方でもあまり知らないようなことにも触れることがありました。そんな知られざる日本の奥深さや、そこに込められた意味や想いに、私はどんどん心を惹かれていきました。

That’s what inspired me to co-found SeiRogai together with Samuel: to create a platform that could capture and share these stories with the world, using technology like virtual reality and documentary-style content to bring people closer to Japan in ways that feel personal and real.

この体験が、SeiRogaiを共同創業するきっかけとなりました。バーチャルリアリティやドキュメンタリースタイルの映像など、テクノロジーを活用して、日本の魅力をもっと「リアルに」「心に届く形で」世界中の人々に伝えたいという思いから始まったのです。

I recently had the honor of being interviewed by Keizaikai Magazine for their “San-San Talk” series. For those unfamiliar, Keizaikai is one of Japan’s respected business publications, established in 1964. It’s known for its in-depth interviews with business leaders and its focus on the people behind the companies, rather than just the numbers. Being featured in such a publication was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our journey and share the mission behind SeiRogai.

先日、『経済界』の「San-San Talk」シリーズで私たちの取り組みについて取り上げていただきました。『経済界』は1964年創刊の歴史あるビジネス誌で、企業の業績だけでなく、その背後にいる「人」にフォーカスした深いインタビューで知られています。そんな由緒あるメディアに掲載されたことは、これまでの歩みを振り返り、SeiRogaiの想いを語る貴重な機会となりました。

In this interview, I was joined by Keizaikai President and CEO Ms. Yumi Sato as the interviewer. We
discussed the founding story of SeiRogai, my passion for Japanese culture, and our efforts to support
regional revitalization and traditional craftsmanship.

It was inspiring to facilitate discussions that highlighted the diverse experiences of Singaporean women making an impact across global industries, reinforcing the importance of community and collaboration.

シンガポール・グローバル・ネットワークが東京で初めて開催した国際女性デーイベントにて、パネルディスカッションの司会およびモデレーターを務めるという貴重な機会をいただきました。リーダーシップ、レジリエンス（逆境への対応力）、そして異文化間のイノベーションについて、各分野を代表するリーダーの皆様が貴重な知見を共有してくださいました。グローバルな業界で活躍するシンガポール出身の女性たちの多様な経験に光を当てるディスカッションを進行できたことは大変刺激的であり、コミュニティと協働の重要性を改めて実感する場となりました。

Earlier this March, I had the honor of hosting and moderating the Singapore Global Network’s inaugural International Women’s Day event in Tokyo. The evening brought together an inspiring community of Singaporean women leaders and global changemakers, all united by the theme: “From Singapore to the World: Women Driving Change Across Borders.”

今年3月初旬、シンガポール・グローバル・ネットワーク主催による東京での初の国際女性デーイベントにて、司会およびモデレーターを務める光栄な機会をいただきました。

This event resonated deeply with me, both personally and professionally. As someone who has lived, studied, and worked across the U.S., Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, I am continually reminded that cross-cultural understanding and leadership are vital for driving sustainable change in today’s interconnected world.

Welcoming guests in both English and Japanese, I aimed to set a tone of inclusivity and global engagement. Language has always served as a bridge in my own journey—whether navigating policy discussions in Seoul, pitching investment deals in Tokyo, or building SeiRogai’s media and consultancy ventures across Asia.

The evening was opened with a keynote address by Ms. Li Lin Liew, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Tokyo, whose remarks underscored the resilience and ingenuity of Singaporeans abroad. Her words reinforced my belief that our collective experiences across borders enrich not only our personal growth but also our ability to lead meaningfully.

Each panelist brought unique perspectives shaped by diverse industries, yet common themes emerged: the importance of adaptability, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Drawing on my own experiences—from private equity in Tokyo to founding SeiRogai, Inc.—I also had the opportunity to share some reflections on the role of multicultural fluency and adaptability in entrepreneurial success. The discussion reaffirmed my conviction that innovation thrives when we bridge ideas across cultures.

One key takeaway from the evening was the critical role of networks like Singapore Global Network (SGN). Particularly for those of us navigating careers far from home, such communities offer vital support, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration.

Having Mr. Ho Koi Foong, SGN’s Regional Director for Northeast Asia, deliver the closing remarks was a full-circle moment—reminding me that even as we explore new horizons, our shared roots continue to provide strength and guidance.

About Alicia Guercio

Alicia Guercio is the founder of Pikimama, a brand offering high-quality, handmade baby slings, and Ponte Pacific, a company providing corporate seminars to support working parents and promote work-life balance in Japan.

Born in Tokyo in 1987 to a Japanese father and American mother, Alicia grew up in Japan  with an international background.

A mother of four, Alicia started selling baby slings in 2015, founded Pikimama in 2019, and established Ponte Pacific in 2022.

She holds certifications as a Sling Smart Peer Supporter (UK), a Post-Natal Care Specialist (Japanese Association of Postpartum Care), and a Dr. Sears Health Coach. She is currently pursuing a Neuroscience Coach Certificate.

With a mission to support parents everywhere, Alicia is changing the way we think about parenting, work, and the future.

The Birth of Pikimama: A Sling Created from Personal Need

When Alicia first became a mother, she was filled with excitement, but also frustration. While other baby carriers on the market might have been functional, they didn’t meet her personal need for a stylish, comfortable option that could keep up with her active lifestyle. As a young mother, she wanted to look and feel good while bonding with her baby, but the carriers she tried often left her feeling uncomfortable or unattractive.

“I remember thinking, ‘Why can’t there be a baby carrier that is both comfortable and fashionable?’ I didn’t want to feel frumpy just because I was a new mom,” Alicia said with a smile.

This frustration sparked a solution. Alicia decided to create her own sling that would combine the softness of a wrap with the simplicity of a carrier. But it wasn’t just about making something for herself—it was about helping others who might be struggling with the same issues.

“I realized that if I was feeling this way, there must be other mothers out there who are looking for the same thing. I wanted something practical but also beautiful.”

It wasn’t long before Alicia’s sling became a hit with her friends. What started as a simple project to fulfill her own needs quickly expanded, as other mothers asked her to create slings for them as well. “Every time I went out with my son in the sling, other moms would stop me and ask, ‘Can you make one for me too?’” she recalled.

In the early days, Alicia would meet customers in local parks for “sling exchanges,” casually selling them her handmade slings. The informal, community-focused approach resonated with other parents, and word of mouth spread quickly. As the demand grew, Alicia realized she had something special. This organic growth led her to formalize the business, ensuring she could continue offering her product to a wider audience while maintaining the authenticity that had made Pikimama so beloved.

As Pikimama began to flourish, Alicia’s dedication to quality and customer connection remained at the heart of everything she did. Her deep understanding of the needs of mothers, coupled with the support of the growing community around her, allowed Pikimama to thrive in ways she had never imagined.

Today, Pikimama is a global brand, supporting not just mothers in Japan, but families around the world. The company has expanded its product range and reached new international markets, all while staying true to its roots of quality, authenticity, and personal care.

Alicia’s humble beginnings—exchanging slings at the park—have grown into a thriving business that empowers parents everywhere, with the same personal touch that made Pikimama so special in the first place.

A Commitment to Quality: Handcrafted with Love, Made in Japan, and Tested for Safety

One of the key reasons Pikimama has become so beloved is its unmatched quality and safety. Alicia insists on overseeing every step of the production process, ensuring that each sling meets her high standards.

“I really wanted to make sure that each sling is made with care, from the cutting of the fabric to the stitching and final delivery. Everything is done in-house because I believe it’s important to oversee the entire process,” she explained.

At the Pikimama studio, there’s a sense of warmth and attention to detail in every corner. The team works diligently, sewing each sling with precision, creating a product that’s not only stylish but also incredibly functional. “I wanted the sling to be not just a fashion statement but a tool that would support both mother and baby,” Alicia emphasized.

The dedication to quality is evident in every step of the process. From the meticulous cutting of fabric to the precise stitching, everything is handmade and crafted right here in Japan. Alicia’s hands-on approach ensures that the final product meets her exacting standards.

In addition to their commitment to handcrafted excellence, Pikimama slings are designed with the utmost safety in mind. They have passed rigorous global safety standards, ensuring that each sling is not only beautiful and functional but also safe for both baby and parent. Pikimama slings have received certifications from trusted organizations, including ASTM International, which sets global safety standards for children’s products, and the Hip Dysplasia Institute, further ensuring the sling’s compliance with rigorous safety criteria.

The Pikimama sling features key safety elements that contribute to both the comfort and well-being of the baby and parent. The M-shape carry, which promotes healthy hip development, ensures that babies are held in a natural and ergonomic position. Additionally, the support belt provides extra security, while the sling’s thoughtful design evenly distributes the baby’s weight across the parent’s back and shoulders, reducing strain.

Alicia also emphasized the sling’s suitability for post-C-section mothers, as the design ensures no pressure is placed on the abdomen, which is a crucial consideration for new mothers recovering from surgery.

This dedication to every detail—whether it’s the careful stitching of fabric, the thoughtful packaging, or the personal touch in each handwritten shipping label—makes Pikimama more than just a product; it’s a brand built on love, passion, and a deep commitment to supporting parents.

Alicia’s commitment to sustainability is another core value at Pikimama. As part of her eco-conscious mission, Pikimama offers an upcycling service where customers can return used slings to be transformed into eco-friendly bags. In addition, the studio uses fabric scraps creatively, such as for arts & crafts activities for kids, ensuring minimal waste and promoting sustainable practices.

Japanese apples are popular for their large size and sweetness. Prized as much for beauty as for taste, apples in pristine condition can fetch hefty price tags at upscale Japanese department stores. To date, Japanese farmers and researchers have recorded over 20 local varieties, including the famous Fuji apple. Less well known but equally delicious is the Yonesaki apple with a history of over 120 years growing on the slopes between the inland mountains and rias-styled Pacific coasts in the Yonesaki region of Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Prefecture.

Autumn brings an array of fruits ready for harvesting, and there is nothing more refreshing than going apple-picking on a crisp fall day. When I lived in the US as a university student, there was always an annual tradition of visiting fragrant and beautiful orchards and plucking ripe fresh apples off the trees to usher in the arrival of Autumn. It was my first time visiting an apple orchard in Japan, however.

秋にはたくさんの果物が収穫できるようになります。さわやかな秋の日にリンゴ狩りをすることほど爽快なことはありません。私がアメリカに住んでいた大学生の時、毎年好例、香り高く美しいリンゴ園を尋ね、熟した新鮮なリンゴを木から摘み取って秋の訪れを知るという習慣がありました。でも、日本でリンゴ園を訪れるのは初めてでした。

Apple growing is best in a cool region with low rainfall. In Japan, the Tohoku area in particular is famous for apple cultivation. The top producer is Aomori, followed by Nagano, Iwate, Akita, and Yamagata Prefectures.

リンゴの栽培は、降雨量の少ない涼しい地域が最適です。 特に東北地方はリンゴ栽培で有名です。 首位の生産地は青森県で、そして長野県、岩手県、秋田県、山形県がそれに続きます。

One Autumn weekend, I found myself at the NPO LAMP’s orchards in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. Rikuzentaka City was one of the hardest-hit areas during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

ある秋の週末、岩手県陸前高田市にある特定非営利活動法人LAMPのリンゴ園に行きました。 陸前高田市は、2011年の東日本大震災と津波で最も被害が大きかった地域の1つです。

Farming areas have been diminishing rapidly due to farmlands being wrecked by the 3.11 disaster and also the problem of an aging population of existing farmers. The NPO LAMP was established by a group of enterprising and spirited farmers with an aim to pass the tradition of Yonesaki Apples to the next generation, to increase the population of people involved in apple farming, and to make the region a better place to work and live.

3.11の災害により農地が破壊されたことと、既存の労働者の高齢化の問題により、農地は急速に減少しています。 NPO LAMPは、「米崎りんご」の伝統を次世代に引き継ぎ、りんご栽培に携わる人々の人口を増やし、地域をより働きやすく、住みやすい場所にするために、意欲的で元気な農家のグループによって設立されました。

At the NPO LAMP orchards, more than 23 different types of apples are grown, including lesser-known Kitakurenai apples and Shinano Gold apples to the world-famous Fuji apples. Different species of apples have different harvest times, beginning as early as July, but the bulk are from September to November.

Rikuzentakata’s Yonesaki Apples: Do Not Hunger for Red!

陸前高田市の米崎りんご：赤に惑わされないで！

Rikuzentaka’s pride and joy is the locally cultivated Yonesaki apple. According to Takashi-san, the key to picking the sweetest and juiciest apple isn’t to be enticed by how red it is, but rather to look at how yellow the bottoms are. Each Yonesaki apple has an undertone, a slight blush of yellow in its pink-red skin. The best Yonesaki apples are the ones whose yellow blush also exhibits a slight greenness. How high up the tree the apple is growing also does not have much correlation to its sweetness.

Hence, rather than just picking the reddest apple you see growing at the top of the tree, it is most important to find one with the right balance of the red body with a yellow bottom!

陸前高田市の誇りと喜びは、地元で栽培されている「米崎りんご」です。 タカシさんによると、最も甘くてジューシーなリンゴを摘む秘訣は、それがどれほど赤いかではなく、お尻がどれほど黄色いかを見ることです。「米崎りんご」は、ピンクがかった赤の皮にわずかに黄色味を帯びた皮があります。一番美味しい米崎りんごは、黄色味を帯びた赤い皮に緑がかったものです。リンゴの木の高い所でどれだけよく育っているかも、その甘さとはあまり関係がありません。

したがって、木の上で成長している最も赤いリンゴを摘み取るのではなく、赤い体と黄色のお尻のバランスが適切なものを見つけることがとても重要ですよ！

How to Pick Apples

リンゴの選び方

When picking the apple, it is important not to just pull on it! In order to maintain the apple’s pristine condition, you should use a cupped hand to cradle and lift up the apple while twisting gently; if it seems like it will come away with its stalk intact, it is ready to be picked. To pick it, you gradually twist and bend it at a 90-degree angle and the apple will snap off the branch naturally. Don’t force apples off a tree because you may bring the fruit spurs away with the fruit and damage the skin of the apple!

リンゴを摘むときは、ただ引っ張らないことが重要です！リンゴの新鮮で完全なままの状態を維持するには、手をカップ状にゆりかごの形にして持ち上げ、優しくひねりながら摘み取ります。茎が傷付かず直ぐに外れるようであれば、摘み取る準備ができています。それを摘むには、90度の角度で徐々にひねって曲げると、リンゴは自然に枝からポキッと離れます。 リンゴを木から力強く無理に取らないでください。リンゴの若い枝をリンゴと一緒に摘み取ると、リンゴの皮を傷つける可能性があります。

The uniqueness of the Yonesaki apple lies in its location: these Rikuzentaka apple farms are the only ones situated in the coastal area, facing both land and sea with plenty of sunshine. It is rare to have an apple farm overlooking the sea. Out of the over 100 orchards in Iwate Prefecture, Takashi-san informs me that only about 10 face the coast, and even fewer are actually next to the sea!

After I had my fun browsing the orchard to pick the best apples I could find, one of the apple farmers cut some apples up for me to have a taste!

りんご園を見て、最も美味しいリンゴを見つけて摘み取るのを楽しんだ後、リンゴ園の方が、私に味わわせるためにリンゴをいくつか切って下さいました！

They were perhaps some of the most aromatic and juiciest apples I have before!
The sweetness and acidity of the apple were in perfect balance, with a delicious crunch to each bite.

それらは私が今迄に食べた中で最も芳香があり果汁いっぱいのリンゴでした！
リンゴの甘さと酸味は完璧にバランスが取れており、一口ごとにシャキシャキとした美味しい噛み応えがありました。

How to Store Apples for a Whole Year!

リンゴを一年中保管する方法！

Another important tip I learned, in terms of enjoying apple season to its fullest, is to keep your apples cold — no matter the variety. Apples can continue to ripen if left outside at room temperature, so you should always, always refrigerate them as soon as possible. I was shocked to learn that organic Yonesaki Apples can actually keep fresh for an entire year if stored properly! In fact, Yonesaki apples taste the best after a change in temperature, and storing them in cold temperatures soon after picking will bring out a condensed caramel flavor. I put mine in the fridge as soon as I got home, and even months later, they still look perfect! Pretty amazing!

リンゴの季節を最大限に楽しむという点で私が学んだもう1つの重要なポイントは、品種に関係なく、リンゴを冷たく保つことです。 リンゴは室温で屋外に置いておくと熟し続ける可能性があるため、常にできるだけ早く冷蔵する必要があります。 オーガニックの「米崎りんご」は、きちんと保管すれば、本当に一年中新鮮な状態を保つことができると知って驚きました！ 実は「米崎りんご」は温度が変化した後の味が最高で、摘み取った直後に低温で保存すると、液化して凝縮されたキャラメルの風味が出てきます。 私は家に帰ってすぐに冷蔵庫に入れました。数ヶ月経った今でも、その時のままに見えますよ！凄いでしょう！

Final Thoughts: Wishing on an Apple Tree

最後に：リンゴの木に願いを

International media has primarily featured Rikuzentakata as one of the cities in Japan that has suffered crippling damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. It is now almost a decade after the earthquake and tsunami, but Rikuzentakata is still undergoing reconstruction up to this day. During my visit to Rikuzentakata City with fellow Singaporeans, we witnessed how the locals are striving hard to rebuild the city every day and make continuous progress with their reconstruction efforts, while sharing their appreciation for the beauty of their coastal hometown and inspire hope in all visitors.

2011年3月11日の東日本大震災で壊滅的な被害を受けた日本の都市の1つとして、国際メディアは主に陸前高田市を取り上げました。地震と津波からほぼ10年が経過しましたが、陸前高田市は今もまだ再建中です。シンガポール人達と一緒に陸前高田市を訪れている間、地元の人々が故郷の海岸の美しさを讃え合いながら毎日街を再建し、活性化するのための努力を継続的に進めている様子を目の当たりにして、そこを尋ねるすべての人達にまた訪れたいという気持ちにさせてくれました。

The mission of the NPO LAMP to “hand down the Yonesaki apple, which has a long history in Rikuzentakata, to the future generation” represents how apple farmers in Rikuzentakata cultivate thousands of beautiful, delicious fruit to be cherished. To me, it felt that each apple symbolizes the well wishes and hopes of the people of Rikuzentakata to spread happiness to others all around the world.  

「岩手県陸前高田市の特産品であり歴史ある「米崎りんご」を育てながら、米崎りんごをはじめとするリンゴ園の皆様の「やりたい！」を応援し、地域の農業と暮らしを守ります。」というNPO LAMPの使命は、陸前高田市のリンゴ園農家が何千もの美しくておいしい果物を育てて大切にすることを表しています。それぞれのリンゴは、陸前高田市の人々が「世界中に幸せを広めたい」という願いと希望を象徴していると感じました。

Perhaps the sheer abundance of apples on an apple tree during its harvest season is the key to understanding how to open our hearts to the abundance in our lives, even if it may feel sparse at times. When people, like the apple tree, are willing to give our hard grown fruits of labor to nurture others freely and openly, we will in return receive more, often in unexpected ways. By affirming and feeling thankful for what we have in the present, we may open up the channels for our own abundance in life. This sentiment is perhaps most important to remember during times of hardship. We can all learn lessons of gratitude from the people of Rikuzentakata City who have lost so much, yet are able to radiate so much warmth, glistening like sunshine streaming on the Yonesaki apple orchards.  

ある意味、例え私達の生活が質素であったとしても、収穫期のリンゴの木にリンゴがたくさん実ることは、私達が心を開いて豊かであることを理解するための鍵だと思います。人が、リンゴの木のように、努力して熱心に実らせた果実を自由に分け隔てなく皆に喜んで与える時、私達は気が付かない間にたくさんのお返しを受け取るでしょう。私達が現在持っているものを受け入れ、感謝することによって、私達は自分自身の豊かな人生への道を開くかもしれないと思いました。この感情は、困難な時期に覚えておくべき最も重要なことだと思います。私達は震災で多くを失った陸前高田市の人々から感謝の気持ちを学ぶことができると思います。震災後の不幸にもかかわらず、彼らは米崎のリンゴ園に注いでいる光り輝く太陽のように暖かな心を皆に放つことができるでしょう。

Mr. Sekine warmly welcomed me into his store, where he introduced me to the store manager, Ms. Suzuki, along with the dedicated staff operating the Ikebukuro store. As I stepped inside, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the incredible variety of goods on display!

Many popular secondhand luxury shops in Japan tend to specialize exclusively in items like bags or watches, such as BRANDFIRST or Brand Off for designer purses and HOUSEKIHIROBA or The Watch Company (TWC) for watches, but the Sekine Ikebukuro West Store breaks the mold. At Sekine, you’ll find a captivating array of treasures, from exquisite high-end watches and an extensive selection of bags and wallets to designer jewelry that will leave you in awe.

The true showstopper, however, was their collection of secondhand branded bags. The Sekine Pawnshop has a long and rich history that dates back to 1942, when Mr. Shimaji Sekine (pictured above), the grandfather of the current CEO Mr. Kazuyuki Sekine, opened his first shop in Ikebukuro. History of Pawnshops in Japan: The Origin of the Shichiya

Sekine has witnessed the fascinating evolution of the role of pawnshops in Japan throughout its long history. Pawnshops, known as “質屋” (shichiya) in Japan, trace their origins to the practice of receiving items in exchange for lending money equal to their value. Even if the borrower couldn’t repay the money, the pawnshop would take possession of the item without imposing additional collections or penalties. While the exact origin of pawnshops is a subject of debate, it is widely believed that they can be traced back to Japan’s Kamakura Period (鎌倉時代, 1185–1333), with some theories suggesting even earlier roots during Japan’s diplomatic missions to Tang China. As Japan transitioned from a barter-based economy to one reliant on currency, people found themselves owning possessions but lacking cash, turning to their families and, subsequently, local pawnshops for assistance.

The Role of Pawnshops in Japanese Society

Traditionally, Japanese pawnshops displayed a distinctive sign – a circle with the kanji character “質” (meaning “quality”), commonly known in the industry as “マル質” (Maru-ni-shichi) signage. These establishments became essential, allowing people to effortlessly exchange and retrieve items such as rice, miso, clothing, bedding, hanging scrolls, hairpins, combs, and more, in return for immediate funds to support their daily lives. This widespread presence of pawnshops gave rise to the saying, “庶民に質屋あり” (“Shomin ni shichiya ari”), which translates to “Pawnshops for the common folks.” As for why a circle is used, while it’s not precisely known, some speculate that since pawnshops deal with money (by providing loans), the “マル” (Maru, circle) could symbolize money (coins).

Japan is a country where mascots are everywhere, representing different groups and neighborhoods. In line with this tradition, Japan’s “Nationwide Pawnshop Union Alliance Society” has its own mascot character, a cute little guy named Shichimaru (しちまる). He wears an apron with the “マル質” (Maru-ni-shichi) logo and has a storehouse-shaped head – symbolizing the pawn warehouse.

Modern Day Pawnshops in Japan

In the 1960s, during Japan’s period of rapid economic growth, pawnshops primarily dealt with items like televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and other household appliances, often referred to as the “three sacred treasures.” They also handled valuable and rare items such as precious metals, jewelry, art, antiques, clothing, bedding, and even daily necessities like pots and kettles. However, the rise of consumer finance companies in the 1970s led to a decline in pawnshop usage. Today, especially among younger generations, pawnshops may not be as familiar or accessible as in the past.

In response, modern pawnshops have adapted beyond the traditional “pawnbroker” model. They engage in activities such as item acquisition, sales, both online and in-store retail, all while leveraging their expertise in assessing item value. As these pawnshops evolve to meet contemporary needs, they aim to become a relevant and approachable part of people’s lives, embodying a new image as “a trusted presence for the common people.” This transition marks the inception of pawnshops gaining recognition for the retail of secondhand luxury products in Japan.

Sekine’s Enduring Tradition: The Heart of Pawnbroking and Circular Economy in Japan

Sekine’s stores have seen a wide variety of items for pawn over the years. Mr. Sekine told me some amazing stories about the most extraordinary and unusual items that his store has dealt with. Once, someone brought in a whole ivory tusk. Another time, someone wanted to pawn themselves! Of course, Sekine’s staff always politely refused to take people as collateral.

Remarkably, to this day, Sekine’s primary business remains centered around pawnbroking (short-term money lending), serving the local community with consumer financing. Unlike bank loans, customers entrust their items to the pawnshop for a short-term loan. They can retrieve their deposited items by repaying the borrowed amount with interest. If the money cannot be repaid, the pawnshop will sell the items in their possession for cash. This system has provided a safe financial option for many people, and it continues to be utilized regularly.

In front of Sekine’s pawnbroking office, which continues to be the primary business of the Sekine Pawnshop and serves Japanese customers with essential consumer financing services to this very day. However, this service is not available for foreign visitors. But tourists can still benefit from it, because the pawnbroking side of Sekine ensures that the products on the shelves of its secondhand retail stores are priced low as they are able to source high quality goods directly from the original owner or from professional auctions.

The Secret to Enduring Success: Expert Appraisers and Customer-Centric Service

With an illustrious 80-year history, Sekine is a pawnshop institution that has stood the test of time. The Ikebukuro West Gate Store, a cornerstone of the brand, has been rooted in the same location for over 60 years! In an age where secondhand retailers can spring up and fade away almost overnight, it’s remarkable how Sekine has persevered through economic downturns and global events. I sought insight from the Ikebukuro Store Manager, Ms. Suzuki, in the hopes of uncovering their secret to enduring success.

Furthermore, Sekine goes above and beyond to ensure that their secondhand items are in prime condition before hitting the shelves for resale. While many secondhand shops simply resell products in the same condition as they are received, Sekine takes the additional step of sending items for professional cleaning and, at times, even restorative work, which can amount to several hundred USD in expenses covered by the shop itself.

The rationale behind this is straightforward – they prioritize customer satisfaction and aim to provide shoppers with the finest experience when making secondhand purchases.

Understanding the Ranking System for Secondhand Luxury Goods in Japan

Secondhand luxury goods come with varying price points for a multitude of reasons, and at Sekine, they employ a ranking system commonly adopted by many pawnshops and secondhand resellers in Japan.

Dedication to Quality and Value: In-House Expert Buyers and Appraisers

As the secondary market for branded goods continues to surge in popularity, Japan has seen an influx of professional purchasing services specializing in these items. However, what truly distinguishes Sekine from other secondhand luxury stores is its identity as a pawnshop, enabling them to maintain their in-house team of appraisers and a rigorous authentication process.

These experts possess the essential training, education, and qualifications to meticulously assess the authenticity and monetary value of branded products. This entails a comprehensive understanding of product condition, manufacturers, logos, designs, rarity, and market trends. Sekine also invests in cutting-edge equipment to provide their appraisers with the latest technology to enhance their authenticity tests.

Mr. Sekine demonstrates how the pawnshop’s professional appraisers scrutinize the metallic components in watches, enhancing their authenticity checks. A specialized machine scans the watch, offering a detailed breakdown of the various precious metals present, which appraisers use as one of their tools to determine the watch’s authenticity when customers bring them in for pawning.

At Sekine, every item undergoes not just one, but at least two to three expert appraisals before earning a spot on the shelves.

Furthermore, Sekine proudly holds membership in the Japan Pawnshop Brand Quality Association (officially called the “Anti-Trading Fakes,” ATF), an organization setting stringent standards to combat counterfeit branded goods in pawnshops. Consequently, Sekine is renowned in the industry for maintaining some of the strictest authentication standards and for leading the fight against counterfeit products.

This unique advantage makes Sekine stand out from the rest, as they can maintain high standards and offer competitive prices. Sekine’s prices are often lower (sometimes 5~10% lower) than large chain stores like Komehyo or Daikokuya.

Real or Fake? – How to Authenticate a Louis Vuitton Bag

One of the foremost concerns for shoppers at a secondhand store is distinguishing between genuine and counterfeit designer items. But how can you discern an authentic designer brand from a fake one?

Ms. Suzuki guided me through the process of authenticating a secondhand Louis Vuitton bag, with tips that even regular shoppers can use!

1. Examine the Logo and Monogram

Louis Vuitton takes immense pride in its iconic logo, which is why an authentic item never has any portions of it concealed by handles, stitching, or leather pieces to hold the handles. This rule applies even to items from special designer collaborations, so be attentive to the appearance of the logo.

2. Scrutinize the Stitching and Texture of Engraved Patterns
