Q1: What was your first encounter with Japan?

Although I am Singaporean, I moved to China as a child and grew up mostly in Shanghai. Osaka was one of our favorite travel destinations, as it was just a few hours away by plane. My fascination with Japan only increased with every visit. So, when I moved from my previous job in South Korea and was deciding where to go next, working in Japan came up as the next challenge.

Q1：日本との最初の出会いは？

私はシンガポール人ですが、父の仕事で子供の頃中国に移り、主に上海で育ちました。
私たちのお気に入りの旅行先の1つに飛行機でわずか数時間で行ける距離の大阪があります。
そして、訪問する度日本への興味が高まりました。
それで、韓国での仕事を辞めて次の進路を決めるときに、
日本での仕事が次の課題として浮上しました。

Q2: Please state your motto in life and why you have chosen it.

“No one can tell you how capable you really are besides yourself.”

I firmly believe that you should challenge yourself to constantly try new things, because you never know how much you can truly achieve until you do. And even if you trip up along the way, the worse that usually happens is that you just have to learn to try a different approach.

Q2：人生のモットーとそれを選んだ理由を教えてください。

人生のモットーは
「あなたがあなた自身以外に本当にどれほど能力があるかを誰もあなたに言うことができません。」

私は、このモットーの通り、常に新しいことに挑戦するべきだと私は固く信じています。
そして、例え途中でつまずいて、通常より状況が悪くなったとしも、別の方法を試すことによりそこから色々学ぶ必要があると信じています。

Q3 : Over your career, what achievement are you the proudest of?

The decision to move to Japan and work in a different industry was a tough career challenge for me. Over the past few years, I am happy that I’ve been able to contribute to raising awareness about Japanese businesses and advising foreigners on Japan. Navigating Japan as a foreign entrepreneur or young professional can be complex, and I look forward to supporting more people in various career and business endeavors.

Q3：キャリアの中で、最も誇りに思っている業績は何ですか？

日本に引っ越して別の業界で働くという決断は、大変な挑戦でしたが、ここ数年、私は日本のビジネスについての認識を高め、日本で外国人に助言することに貢献できたことを嬉しく思います。
私を含め外国の起業家や若い専門家のために日本をナビゲートすることは簡単なことではありません。
私は、これからも様々なキャリアやビジネスの取り組みでより多くの人々をサポートできることを楽しみにしています。

Q4 : What are your goals during your time in Japan, your current position or in life?

My goals moving forward include building up the company I co-founded in Tokyo while supporting the business development of Japanese small and midsized enterprises overseas or helping foreign companies and investors enter the Japanese market. At SeiRogai, Inc., we aim to provide consultancy services and produce media content that will bridge the knowledge gap between Japan and Southeast Asia focused on the themes of international business, entrepreneurship, investments, education and cross-cultural communication.

Q4：日本滞在中の目標は何ですか？

今後の目標は、海外の中小企業の事業展開を支援したり、
外国企業や投資家の日本市場への参入を支援したりすることと同時に私が東京で共同設立した会社を将来に向けて前進させることです。
株式会社SeiRogaiでは、国際ビジネス、起業家精神、投資、教育、異文化コミュニケーションをテーマに、
日本と東南アジアの知識のギャップを埋めるコンサルタントサービスとメディアコンテンツの制作を目指しています。

Q5 : What wisdom, advice or tips can you give to people living and working in Japan?

Japan is well known for being extremely detail oriented and seeking perfection in preparing for any new venture or before launching new products. The key thing to understand is that you will never feel 100 percent ready. Sometimes, you just have to jump in the deep end, and more often than not you will find that things work out better than you might have expected. Above all, keeping an open mind will allow you to learn many new things about Japan and also about yourself. Having exposure to and being flexible enough to adapt to diverse perspectives, people, and surroundings distinct from your own is an important asset for anyone, and will be relevant no matter the circumstance or challenge you find yourself facing.

Q5：日本に住んでいる人や働いている人に与えるヒント、アドバイス、知恵は何ですか？

日本は非常に細部に気を配り、新しいベンチャーの準備や新製品の発売前に完璧を求めていることでよく知られています。
理解しておくべき重要なことは、誰も100％準備ができているとは決して感じないということです。
時々、あなたはまだ未経験ながら深いところに飛び込む必要があるだけで、たいていの場合、あなたが思っていたよりもうまくいっていることに気づくでしょう。
何よりも、オープンマインドを保つことで、日本や自分自身について多くの新しいことを学ぶことができます。
自分とは異なる多様な視点、人々、環境に触れ、それに順応するのに十分な柔軟性があることは、直面している状況や課題に関係なく誰にとっても重要な資産です。

Zia Mody has been ranked the #1 most powerful woman in India by Fortune magazine.

I had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Zia Mody when she previously delivered a lecture at the International House of Japan for the “Japan-India Distinguished Visitors Program”. 

As the indisputable leader in Indian corporate law and ranked the #1 most powerful woman in India by Fortune magazine, it was very stimulating to hear her analysis of India’s future potential. Her firm, AZB & Partners, is rated first among the top law firms for mergers and acquisitions. After better understanding Zia Mody’s background and career path (full of a whole lot of pure determination and hard work!), I was even more inspired by how she has managed to achieve so much (well-deserved) success. She is a true role model not only for women in India, but for anyone who aims to achieve the best in their field internationally.

ジア・モディ氏が【日印対話プログラム】のために国際文化会館で講演を行った際に、私は会う機会をいただきました。

Ms. Mody spoke on the intriguing possibilities of and in India, as well as how she has been working to bring change to Indian society from the perspective of business, law and women. It was stimulating to hear first-hand about the fast pace of change in present-day India, making it an especially exciting and fruitful place for business.

モディ氏は、インドの未来の可能性の魅力について語り、ビジネス、法律、女性の観点からインド社会に変化をもたらすためにどのように取り組んでいるかについて話しました。 変化の激しいインドがどのように進んでいるのかを直接知ることができたので、インドのビジネスにおいて特にエキサイティングで実り多い国だと知りました。

On Rural India:

• Almost 70% of India’s population lives in rural areas (according to recent data, the rural–urban distribution is 68.84% and 31.16%).
• Greatest growth potential for India in the near future can be unlocked if rural India were provided better infrastructure, bridging the rural-urban divide.
   

インドの農村地域について：

• インドの人口のほぼ70％が農村地域に住んでいます（最近のデータによると、農村部と都市部の分布は68.84％と31.16％です）。

On Indian Youth:

• Latest Census data shows nearly 41% of India’s population is below the age of 20!
• India’s population demographics with surging numbers of youth is the OPPOSITE to Japan’s aging society
• Youth society implies huge potential for development especially with the fast adoption of technology
• However, problems could arise with unemployment (leading to societal restlessness and instability) – India’s youth unemployment is relatively high, hovering around 20%

On Women in India:

• Mody is a strong advocate in bringing about changes in legislation supporting women, especially their financial independence
  • Mody has pushed for legislation that would empower more women through microfinancing and enabling women to open bank accounts in their name
• India was 14^th in 14 major Asian markets in MasterCard’s “Worldwide Index of Women’s Advancement”
  • 99% of women are in informal sector; 1/3 of agricultural workers are female
• If participation of women in the economy were at par with men, India could increase GDP up to 60% by 2025!
• Advice to businesses: “Hire us because you want to, because we are good and because you are willing to train us; not because you have to.” – Zia Mody

Career Advice:

Mody’s advice to young women striving for a successful career was particularly inspirational for me. Based on her own career experiences, she understands fully that there is nothing that can replace the results of hard work and steadfast determination.

Mody shared her story of how when she first started working, she was paid half the salary of her male colleagues. Rather than being discouraged, she made the commitment to work more than twice as hard than others in order to be better than everyone else. And so she did.

According to Mody, “hard work, a sense of self-worth, and passion for what you do are the cornerstones to success.”

Standing tall on the stage, it is hard to believe that Ms. Zia Mody is over 60 years old from the strength in her poise and steady resilience of her speech.
 

キャリアアドバイス：

キャリアを成功させるために努力している若い女性へのモディ氏のアドバイスは、私にとって特にインスパイアされました。 彼女自身のキャリア経験に基づいて、彼女のハードワークと揺るぎない決意の結果を深く理解することができました。

モディ氏自身の経験では、最初に働き始めたとき、女性として、男性の同僚の給与の半分しか受け取っていなかったのです。あの時、モディ氏は落胆するのではなく、他の誰よりも優れているために、他の人よりも2倍以上努力することを決めました。 そして、彼女はそのように行動しました。

モディ氏によれば、「勤勉、自尊心、そしてあなたがすることへの情熱こそが成功の礎です。」と話してくれました。

ステージに立つと、彼女の冷静さと力強さをとても感じました。モディ氏が60才以上であるとはとても信じられませんでした。これからも色々活躍されると思います。そして、とても尊敬できる女性です。

After meeting with Ms. Zia Mody, I feel renewed with energy and motivation to tackle my own career challenges. I look forward to creating my own (business, career, and life) opportunities with India in the near future.

モディ氏に会った後、私は自分のキャリアの課題に取り組むためのエネルギーやモチベーションを新たに感じました。 近い将来に、インドと自分の機会（ビジネス、キャリア、人生など）縁を作ることを楽しみにしています。

シャネルマドモアゼルプリヴェ展とブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏とのマスタークラス

In October, I attended the re-opening of Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit and a masterclass event with Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion. Tokyo is the fifth stop of the exhibition’s tour, after London, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

10月に、シャネルのマドモアゼルプリヴェ展のプレオープニングと、
シャネルグローバルファッション部門のプレジデントの
ブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏とのマスタークラスイベントに参加しました。
東京は、ロンドン、ソウル、香港、上海に続き、展覧会ツアーの5番目の開催地です。

Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit

シャネルのマドモアゼルプリヴェ展

The exhibition features a unique layout with five sections over two floors inspired by different elements of the French fashion icon Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s private creation studio in Paris. Each room features a distinct color that represents the brand (white for the staircase, beige for the sofa, black for the dining room, red for the writing desk and gold for the fireplace) with haute couture creations displayed alongside bottles of the No.5 perfume and original jewelry pieces.

展覧会は、フランスのファッションアイコン　ガブリエル「ココ」シャネルのパリのプライベートクリエーションスタジオに触発された2つのフロアに5つのセクションがあるユニークなレイアウトを特徴としています。 各部屋には、ブランドを表す独特の色（階段は白、ソファはベージュ、ダイニングルームは黒、ライティングデスクは赤、暖炉はゴールド）が特徴です。 香水とオリジナルのジュエリーも展示されています。

These two words are on the sign of the door to Mademoiselle Chanel’s Creation Studio on the third floor of 31 rue Cambon in Paris. As the title of the exhibition, visitors are invited to “open Chanel’s door of creation, to embark on an immersive journey into the sources of the creative universe of the fashion house.”

I am standing here in front of a redrawing of the actual door behind which work was done, signifying an extremely exclusive experience.

これら2つの言葉（マデモワゼル・プリヴェ）は、パリのカンボン通り31番地の3階にあるマドモアゼルシャネルのクリエーションスタジオへの扉に書いてあります。 展覧会のタイトルとして、訪問者は「シャネルの創造の扉を開いて、ファッションハウスの創造的な宇宙へ旅に出る」ように招待されています。

Black for the Dining Room

Did you know that before Chanel made black popular, it was seen as a color worn primarily by nuns (if not reserved solely for funerals)? I am certain that if black was not such a predominant color in Chanel’s fashion, it would not have been quite so popular in Japan. After all, many Japanese seem to have a special affinity with black clothing, wearing black dresses and suits day in and day out!

シャネルが黒を流行らせる前に、葬儀のためだけか又は主に修道女が着用する色として知られていました。 シャネルのファッションにとって、黒がそれほど主体的な色でなければ、日本ではそれほど人気がなかったでしょう。 結局のところ、多くの日本人は黒い服に対して違和感を持っていなかったので、黒いドレスとスーツをよく着ていますね！

Personally, this was my favorite section – I have no doubt that almost every girl loves to glitter and sparkle!

Masterclass with Bruno Pavlovsky

After visiting the exhibit, I attended a masterclass with Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel Fashion.

Having worked at Chanel for over 30 years, Bruno shared his vision for Chanel and shared insights to how Chanel manages its branding.

展示を観賞した後、シャネルファッションの社長であるブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏と、彼のマスタークラスに参加しました。

シャネルに30年以上籍を置いたブルーノ氏は、シャネルに対するビジョンを共有し、シャネルがそのブランドをどのように管理しているかについて話をしてくれました。

With each market that Chanel enters, the brand faces the challenge of balancing contributions from local markets with some original brand point of view. Every market is a unique combination and the best way to execute effective branding, according to Bruno, is to appeal to customers in each specific market. It is necessary even for Chanel to adjust their brand to local perspectives.

To demonstrate this point, Bruno highlights that Chanel has over 200 boutiques. Although this number is fewer than some of their competitors, Chanel places strong emphasis on each boutique to contribute uniquely to the image of the brand.

シャネルが参入する各市場で、シャネルのブランドは地元市場でのブランドイメージと、独自のブランド視点とのバランスを取るという課題に直面しています。 ブルーノ氏によると、すべての市場はオリジナルの組み合わせであり、効果的なブランディングを実行する最良の方法は、特定の各市場の顧客にアピールすることです。 シャネルにとっても、ブランドを現地のイメージに合わせて調整する必要があります。

Ultimately, the key to effective branding is to “first understand your own message and brand in order to effectively communicate it to customers.” Once you know what you want to deliver, and have in mind a concrete idea of the brand you want to create, customers will come naturally.

With regards to digital trends and e-commerce, Bruno states that there are still no plans to sell fashion items via e-commerce. Perhaps this is unsurprising, given the fact that luxury brands such as Chanel firmly believe in the importance of unique in-store experiences.

Finally, Bruno also touched upon issues of sustainability – Chanel is making efforts to be more sustainable in sourcing its materials, and along these lines, recently stopped using exotic skins.

At the event, I also met with Guillermo GUTIERREZ, the current CEO of Chanel Japan,

& Chairman Richard Collasse who is well-known in Japan for his active role overseeing the construction of the emblematic Chanel building in Tokyo’s Ginza district. ^^/

このイベントでは、シャネルジャパンの現CEOのGuillermo GUTIERREZ氏にもお会いしました。

そして、東京の銀座地区に象徴的なシャネルの建物の建設を監督した彼の積極的な役割で日本によく知られているRichard Collasse会長。^^/

The Mademoiselle Privé Exhibit was a spectacular experience to learn about Chanel’s history, designs, and the story behind conceptual ideas. Definitely worth a visit for all Chanel fans!

During the masterclass, I learned a lot about Chanel’s modern vision, branding strategy, and also the ongoing challenges they face. It was eye-opening to hear about how Chanel makes a concerted effort to adapt local contributions as part of its global brand, and insightful to have Bruno Pavlovsky repeatedly stress the foundational elements of successful branding (i.e., understanding what you want to deliver is the best way to ensure that the brand message will be effectively communicated to customers!).

Personally, I would have liked to hear more specifically what Bruno Pavlovsky, as President of Fashion, believes are the greatest opportunities for Chanel in the future. Moreover, I am curious to understand what he identifies as the areas that presently need the most improvement for the Chanel brand to continue to evolve.

シャネルマドモアゼルプリヴェの展示はシャネルの歴史、デザイン、シャネルのアイディアの背後にある物語について学ぶ素晴らしい体験でした。すべてのシャネルのファンにとって間違いなく訪れる価値があります！

マスタークラスでは、シャネルの現代的なビジョン、ブランディング戦略、そして彼らが直面している継続的な課題について多くのことを学びました。シャネルがグローバルブランドの一部として地元にブランドイメージを適応させるために協力して取り組んでいることを伺って、目を見張るものがありました。ブランドメッセージが効果的に顧客に伝えられるようにすることです！

個人的には、ファッションの社長であるブルーノ・パブロフスキー氏が、シャネルにとって今後の最大のチャンスだと考えていることをもっと具体的に聞きたかったのです。さらに、シャネルブランドが進化し続けるために現在最も改善が必要な分野として彼が特定していることを理解したいと思います。

The Embassy of Singapore in Tokyo held a New Year’s event for Singaporean Residents in Japan recently at the Hotel New Otani. It was fun to gather with fellow Singaporeans and bond over local foods such as Beef Rendang and Bak Kut Teh. It was also surprisingly homey to hear so much Singlish in one room in Tokyo. 🙂 During the National Day celebrations, Merlion statues and Singapore flags were placed everywhere. Also had the opportunity to meet the current Ambassador of Singapore to Tokyo and his wife. <Check out photos & captions below!>

Japan is one of the few Asian countries that does not celebrate the Lunar New Year (FYI, in South Korea, it is known as “Seollal,” or “Eumnyeok Seollal” 음력설날), so it was nice to have a celebration with the overseas Singapore community here. Gong Xi Fa Cai & Happy New Year of the Dog! 恭喜发财，狗年大吉！☆

先日、シンガポール大使館が日本に住むシンガポールのコミュニティのための新年会イベントをホテルニューオータニで開催しました。何百人も出席しましたので、にぎやかなイベントでした。

シンガポール大使館は色んなシンガポール料理を提供しました。例えば、Beef　Rendang(牛肉ルンダン：ココナッツミルクと香辛料で長時間煮込んだインドネシア肉料理である)やRoti　Prata（ロティ・プラタ：薄い生地が層になっているのが特徴のインド風パンケーキ）やBak Kut Teh（バクテー：マレーシア及びシンガポールの鍋料理である）など…　たくさんいただきました！皆様、シンガポール料理はお好きですか？

ちなみに、皆さんは新年の抱負って何でしょうか？私は、今まで日本に住んで1年になりました。去年、新しい経験がいっぱいでした。今年は二つの抱負があります。

１） 今年は、もっと仕事を頑張りたいと思います。新しいスキルを開発したいし、多様な知識を学びたいと思っています。そして、大事なコミュニケーション能力のために、日本語がうまくなりたいです。

２） 日本に住んでいますが、東京以外他のところにあまり行ったことがないです。日本はたくさん綺麗な町があると思います。私にとって、金沢、北海道と沖縄は一番行きたいところです。時間があれば、今年は日本の色んな町を観光に行きたいと思います。

２０１８年を楽しみにしています！
