During my recent trip to Thailand, I had the privilege of joining a fireside chat with Khun Kirit Shah, Chairman of GP Group, together with fellow Harvard alumni in Bangkok. It was an intimate gathering, yet one filled with wisdom, laughter, and thought-provoking stories from a man who has spent more than five decades building one of Thailand’s most respected business groups.

先日のタイ訪問の際、私は GPグループ会長のキリット・シャー氏 と、バンコクでのハーバード同窓生の集まりでファイヤーサイドチャットに参加する機会をいただきました。小規模で親密な会でしたが、そこには知恵、笑い、そしてタイを代表するビジネスグループを50年以上にわたり築き上げてきた人物から語られる、数々の示唆に富んだストーリーが溢れていました。

Hearing Khun Kirit reflect on how he transformed his family’s modest grain trading business into a diversified conglomerate spanning shipping, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, aviation, and technology was nothing short of inspiring.

キリット氏が、いかにして家族が営んでいた穀物取引の小さな事業を、海運・製薬・ホスピタリティ・航空・テクノロジーにわたる多角的なコングロマリットへと成長させてきたかを振り返る姿は、本当に心を打つものでした。

On Seizing New Frontiers
新たなフロンティアを切り開くことについて

What struck me most was his philosophy toward entrepreneurship. As a young man, Khun Kirit spotted opportunities in the Arabian Gulf at a time when few others dared to look there. Rather than waiting, he acted – leveraging both conviction and foresight to open new markets.

特に印象的だったのは、起業家精神に対する彼の哲学です。若い頃、彼はまだ誰も注目していなかったアラビア湾岸地域にビジネスチャンスを見いだしました。待つのではなく、自ら動き出し、信念と先見性を武器に新たな市場を切り拓いたのです。

His reflections reminded me that entrepreneurship isn’t about chasing every opportunity; it’s about recognizing the right ones and having the courage to act before the path is fully clear. Equally important, it’s about taking action without getting paralyzed by overthinking.

彼の言葉から、起業とはあらゆる機会を追いかけることではなく、「正しい機会」を見極め、道が完全に見えていなくても勇気を持って行動することなのだと気づかされました。そして同時に、考えすぎて動けなくなるのではなく、行動に移すことの大切さを強調されていました。

This resonates with my own journey at SeiRogai. In an ever-changing global landscape, it’s easy to spend too long preparing, analyzing, and weighing every possible risk and reward, but sometimes opportunities slip away while we’re still preparing. Khun Kirit’s advice was a powerful reminder of the need to balance thoughtful analysis with decisive action and to trust instinct when the moment calls for it.

これは、私自身が SeiRogai を築いていく上で強く共鳴する考えです。グローバルな環境が常に変化する中で、私たちはつい長い時間をかけて準備や分析をし、リスクとリターンを徹底的に検討しがちです。しかし、その間にチャンスが逃げてしまうこともあります。キリット氏のアドバイスは、慎重な分析と決断力ある行動のバランスを取り、時には直感を信じて動くことの重要性を改めて思い出させてくれました。

On Legacy and Values

Another theme that deeply resonated with me was Khun Kirit’s commitment to family legacy. Despite GP Group’s global expansion, he emphasized that its foundation rests on the values passed down through generations: trust, resilience, and long-term stewardship. For him, growth should never come at the cost of continuity and purpose.

もう一つ心に深く響いたのは、家族のレガシーに対する彼のこだわりでした。GPグループがグローバルに拡大する中でも、その土台には世代を超えて受け継がれる 信頼・レジリエンス・長期的視点に基づく経営 という価値観があると彼は強調していました。彼にとって、成長は決して継続性や目的を犠牲にしてまで追い求めるものではないのです。

“Sometimes opportunities slip away while we’re still preparing. The key is balancing thoughtful analysis with decisive action. Growth should never come at the cost of continuity and purpose.”

This really struck a chord. At SeiRogai, I often reflect on the kind of legacy I want to create, not just for myself, but for the people, partners, and communities we work with. Innovation and expansion are vital, but what truly endures are the relationships we nurture, the principles we uphold, and the positive impact we leave behind.

この言葉は私に強く響きました。SeiRogaiでも、私は常にどんなレガシーを築きたいのかを考えています。それは自分自身のためだけでなく、共に働く人々、パートナー、そして関わるコミュニティのためでもあります。イノベーションや拡大はもちろん重要ですが、本当に残るのは人との関係、守り抜く価値観、そして社会に残すポジティブな影響 なのだと再認識しました。

Looking Ahead
これからに向けて

Walking away from the conversation, I felt both energized and grounded. Energized, because Khun Kirit’s story is proof that with vision and courage, even the boldest frontiers can be reached. Grounded, because it reaffirmed the importance of leading with values and building for the long term.

As SeiRogai continues to grow, I hope to carry forward these lessons – to keep an entrepreneurial spirit alive while also cultivating something lasting and meaningful.

I’m grateful for the chance to learn from leaders like Khun Kirit, and for the reminder that entrepreneurship is not only about ambition – it is also about legacy.

It was inspiring to facilitate discussions that highlighted the diverse experiences of Singaporean women making an impact across global industries, reinforcing the importance of community and collaboration.

シンガポール・グローバル・ネットワークが東京で初めて開催した国際女性デーイベントにて、パネルディスカッションの司会およびモデレーターを務めるという貴重な機会をいただきました。リーダーシップ、レジリエンス（逆境への対応力）、そして異文化間のイノベーションについて、各分野を代表するリーダーの皆様が貴重な知見を共有してくださいました。グローバルな業界で活躍するシンガポール出身の女性たちの多様な経験に光を当てるディスカッションを進行できたことは大変刺激的であり、コミュニティと協働の重要性を改めて実感する場となりました。

Earlier this March, I had the honor of hosting and moderating the Singapore Global Network’s inaugural International Women’s Day event in Tokyo. The evening brought together an inspiring community of Singaporean women leaders and global changemakers, all united by the theme: “From Singapore to the World: Women Driving Change Across Borders.”

This event resonated deeply with me, both personally and professionally. As someone who has lived, studied, and worked across the U.S., Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, I am continually reminded that cross-cultural understanding and leadership are vital for driving sustainable change in today’s interconnected world.

Welcoming guests in both English and Japanese, I aimed to set a tone of inclusivity and global engagement. Language has always served as a bridge in my own journey—whether navigating policy discussions in Seoul, pitching investment deals in Tokyo, or building SeiRogai’s media and consultancy ventures across Asia.

Two of our recent endeavors delves into innovating upon our expertise in filmmaking with the latest digital media equipment and technology. The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the way we travel, making it difficult to cross borders and explore new horizons. However, where there are challenges, there are also opportunities for innovation. That’s why we developed our services, “SeiRogaiTV”, a new streaming platform that focuses on bringing more content from SouthEast Asia to the world, and “Global Virtual Travel,” a platform that offers VR360 virtual tours accessible to both domestic and international audiences.

In this interview, we also explore the story behind our company’s name. You see, our CEO Samuel Yuen had a serendipitous encounter with “Seirogan,” a Japanese medicine renowned for its healing properties. Inspired by the medicine’s ability to captivate and heal, we chose the name SeiRogai, which represents our journey of recognizing and spreading the true charms of Japan.

SeiRogai, Inc.:

“Bridging Japan to the World”

Point #1: One-stop shop service to promote the charms of Japan to the rest of the world.

SeiRogai Inc. is co-founded by CEO Samuel Yuen (pictured left), and myself, Rachel Leng, with the aim to serve as a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world, and the ultimate goal of showcasing the “true charms of Japan.”

The services we provide are comprised of the combination of the following areas (1) “Media Production” for overseas expansion, (2) “Marketing, Advertising and Branding” including every stage of marketing strategies such as planning, development, and assessment, (3) “Business Consulting” facilitating support for market research, overseas expansion strategies, overseas market development, and business establishment, and (4) “Online distribution services” for local tourism and companies in Japan and overseas through our platforms Global Virtual Travel and SeiRogaiTV. Our company’s distinctive feature is that we can effectively offer these services to our clients as a one-stop shop.

Point #2: The Japanese “norm” is a big attraction for foreigners.

Utilizing the advantages of media production, we strive to showcase the “charms of Japan” that are still rather unknown abroad and even on a domestic level because Japanese people might take them for granted. From our unique standpoint of foreigners living in Japan, we aim to spark interest in Japanese culture and places of interest from a historical and educational perspective, in order to serve as a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world.

This also relates to the story behind our company’s name. Due to his busy schedule in preparation for the establishment of the company, our CEO Samuel Yuen experienced stomach pain. After taking “Seirogan” offered to him at the pharmacy, he recovered immediately. Seirogan, a Japanese medicine revered by the Japanese people for its healing properties, is usually out of the radar for most foreigners living in Japan. We found the wonderful effect to be quite alluring, so we shared it with our friends abroad, where it went on to gain quick popularity.

There are many things that are part of common knowledge in Japan but are still unknown to foreigners. We decided on the company’s name with the spirit of recognizing the true charms of Japan while taking on the mission of spreading it more widely. The “Seiro” in SeiRogai is easy to remember, as it sounds similar to Seirogan. At the same time, it also sounds similar to “seiko”, meaning “success” in Japanese. This visual is also included in the representation of the company’s logo, where the “road to success” is intended to be portrayed. The circle in the logo represents the round Seirogan pill, while the film strip represents the path we are trying to pave within the media production industry in Japan as a ground-breaking company.

Point #3: We want to bring the “JAPAN Brand” overseas by way of high-quality media production and human connections.

As a certified “JAPAN Brand” partner company, we actively collaborate with the Government of Japan’s SME Agency in the promotion and business development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing comprehensive support all across Japan and overseas by taking advantage of our unique distinction of serving as a “one-stop shop” for media production, marketing and advertising. All of this is supported by our established strong network of connections in Japan and overseas, a product of our cross-cultural business approach.

Our CEO Samuel Yuen, who was raised in Australia, is a seasoned international film producer with a career spanning for over 20 years. His extensive experience includes Hollywood productions, TV shows and commercials, documentaries, and many other media projects distributed across Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, and other countries. In addition to his rich experience in media production, he actively serves as General Secretary and Advisor to a former Senator and member of Thailand’s Royal Family.

On my part, I majored in East Asian Studies at Harvard University and have a network of business executives from all around the world. I am also a global speaker and public figure with a strong presence on social media.

With our exceptional synergy, we are able to provide world-class support by combining state-of-the-art quality media production with our consolidated network of connections and cross-cultural business perspectives.

Point #4: Japan and Japanese products are in demand around the world.

Japan was ranked first in the World Economic Forum (WEF) “2021 Travel and Tourism Development Index Report”, also known as the Davos Forum. This report ranks the competitiveness of the tourism industry by comparing tourism resources, transportation infrastructure, and safety of each country, among other indicators. This proves that Japan is by far the most popular destination for inbound tourism, especially from Southeast Asia and Australia, and that there is a growing number of foreigners who want to learn more about Japan and consume goods and services produced in Japan.

However, general media outlets often tend to focus solely on portraying Japan’s lush nature and delicious food. I saw there was a demand for content aiming to convey Japan’s rich history and culture throughout each region more deeply, showing interactions with local communities. We wanted to take on the challenge of creating such content complemented by story-telling of the culture, history and traditions of Japan’s hidden gems.

Point #5: Virtual tours using VR360 ° technology born from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, crossing borders and traveling freely was severely limited. In light of these events, new business models had to emerge. With our service “Global Virtual Travel,” we strive to provide an online distribution platform for local tourism and businesses for both domestic and international audiences. We are developing virtual tours using our unique VR360 ° shooting technology, supported by our interactive DX platform. The concept we are aiming for is “an immersive experience for the viewer.” The viewer will be able to choose a place of interest and access the footage as if being there, complemented by storytelling introducing the history and culture of the location, allowing them to interact with locals, and in this way promoting tourism in the area.

We have collaborated with Fuchu City as a pilot project in this exciting endeavor, producing a promotional video captivating its unique allure. As a former “Miss Singapore” titleholder, I am also featured as a guide. In addition, we have also been certified as “Minato City Promotion Crew,” one of the most acclaimed wards in Tokyo. We are cooperating to highlight the captivating essence of Minato Ward by producing an interactive VR360 virtual tour through Zojoji Temple, with the projection of further spreading its charm both in Japan and abroad.

The approach utilized in these videos involves incorporating a storyline while showcasing a specific destination, effectively merging the allure of the narrative with the captivating backdrop of the featured location. Point #6: An unprecedented entertainment platform.

In a post-pandemic landscape, another business venture we have taken on is SeiRogaiTV, an online distribution service that connects Southeast Asia and Japan. In the midst of the pandemic unfolding, we made attempts to collaborate with local TV stations, but due to travel restrictions, transmitting information proved to be a challenge. However, SeiRogaiTV has obtained authorization to distribute Thai programs and movies through our platform to Japan and the rest of the world, offering English and Japanese subtitles.

Our vision is to extend the showcase of the appealing and captivating facets of Japan to a larger audience. Furthermore, this platform could serve as a channel for promoting tourism and cultural soft power not only focused on Tokyo but also highlighting other regions of Japan, allowing many people, even those who cannot travel, to enjoy quality experiences transcending physical boundaries.

Point #7: The key to overseas expansion is market research from a local perspective.

We provide one-stop support for the overseas expansion of our partners through carefully planned marketing strategies and business consultation, but the question of “where to start?” is a challenge for many SMEs. As a solution, we offer branding and market research services.

Ehime Prefecture, consisting of the northwest area of Shikoku Island and several smaller islands in the Seto Island Sea, is one of the lesser-known regions of Japan. I spent about a week there in January.

It was my first trip to the Shikoku area and to be honest, I was not sure of what to expect of Ehime. I had heard that even for Japanese people, many will choose to visit different regions on the Honshu main island first before venturing out to Shikoku.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find Ehime a beautiful area to explore with tranquil nature and unique historical buildings.

In this blog post, I will share highlights of my time in Ehime exploring tourist attractions, meeting with the locals, as well as introduce the teleworking facilities we used!

愛媛県は、四国の北西部と瀬戸内海のいくつかの小さな島々からなり、
日本ではあまり知られていない地域のひとつです。
私は1月に1週間ほど滞在しました。

四国地方を訪れるのは初めてで、正直なところ、
愛媛に何を期待したらいいのか分からなかった。
日本人でも、四国に行く前にまず本州のいろいろな地域を訪れる人が多いと聞いていました。

しかし、愛媛県はのどかな自然や魅力な歴史的建造物がある、
散策するにはとても美しい地域であることに、私はとても驚かされました。

今回のブログ記事では、愛媛県での観光地巡りや地元の方々との交流、
そして利用したテレワーク施設を紹介します。

観光スポットについて

During my week in Ehime Prefecture, I stayed in Matsuyama City and Imabari City. Arriving to Matsuyama City, I was shocked to learn that this city is the largest city in Shikoku, and is perhaps one of the most populated cities I have visited in a rural prefecture so far. There were cars and people everywhere! It almost did not feel like I was in the countryside, but just a suburban area of Osaka. I have been to areas of Tokyo that were less busy… The usual metropolitan conveniences of any large city could all be found in Matsuyama City, with its very own Takashima and numerous department stores, while still being within an hour’s drive away from the vast ocean or quiet mountain trails. I suppose that is what makes many local residents choose to live in Ehime Prefecture – you get the convenience similar to any large city but can still easily escape to the countryside and island life at any time. In fact, the Ehime Prefectural Government informed us that the number of people immigrating to the prefecture has almost doubled in the past year alone, with many young families moving to the region.

愛媛県での1週間は、松山市と今治市に滞在しました。
松山市に到着して、この市が四国最大の都市であり、
私が今まで訪れた地方都市の中で最も人口の多い都市の一つであることを知り、
衝撃を受けました。車も人もそこらじゅうにいる。
田舎というより、大阪の郊外にいるような感覚でした。
東京のもっと賑やかでない地域にも行ったことがあると感じました。。。
松山市には高島屋やデパートがあり、車で1時間も走れば海や山にも行けます。
大都市のような利便性を持ちながら、いつでも気軽に田舎暮らしや島暮らしができる、
それが多くの県民が愛媛県に住む理由なのでしょう。
実際、愛媛県に移住してくる人の数はこの1年でほぼ倍増し、
若い家族連れが多くなっていると愛媛県から聞きました。

Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City
松山市・道後温泉

Dogo Onsen is perhaps the most famous attraction of Matsuyama City. It is famous for being one of Japan’s oldest hot springs and an emblem of Ehime, attracting many residents, tourists and pilgrims for over 3,000 years with its healing waters. Studio Ghibli fans will recognize its main attraction, the Dogo Onsen Honkan, as the inspiration for the bathhouse featured in the anime Spirited Away.  Unfortunately, the building was under construction when I visited, but the Dogo Onsen shopping street area was filled with many cute souvenir stores and coffee shops – great for a late morning or afternoon stroll!

道後温泉は、松山市で最も有名な観光スポットでしょう。
日本最古の温泉の一つであり、愛媛のシンボルとして有名で、
3000年以上にわたって多くの住民、観光客、巡礼者を癒しの湯で魅了してきました。
スタジオジブリのファンなら、この道後温泉本館が、
アニメ「千と千尋の神隠し」に登場する銭湯のモチーフになったことをご存じだろう。
残念ながら工事中でしたが、道後温泉商店街にはかわいいお土産屋さんや喫茶店がたくさんあり、
朝や昼下がりの散策にはもってこいです。

This clock is located right in front of the main entrance of Dogo Onsen Station. It is modeled after Dogo Onsen’s main building and on the hour, there is a special performance where the clock’s platform rises and characters from Botchan (one of the most popular Japanese novels set in Matsuyama City) come out and dance to the music played in the background.

When I visited, you can see that the foot bath next to the clock was filled with mandarin oranges!　How special!

道後温泉駅正面玄関の目の前にある時計です。
道後温泉本館を模したもので、毎正時になると時計の台が上がり、
松山市を舞台にした日本の代表的な小説「坊っちゃん」の登場人物が出てきて、
流れる音楽に合わせて踊るという特別な演出があるのだそうです。

私が訪れた時は、時計横の足湯にみかんが置かれているのが見えますか！？
なんて特別なんでしょう。

Shimanami Kaido in Imabari City
今治市・しまなみ海道

The Shimanami Kaido area is a series of bridges connecting Honshu (Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture: please click below to read the blog series I did on Onomichi City previously) to Shikoku that offers a spectacularly scenic route over the Seto Inland Sea. In recent years, the local governments have been promoting it as a picturesque cycling route over architectural masterpieces, and cycling tournaments are also held in the area.

しまなみ海道は、
本州（広島県尾道市：以前尾道市を紹介したブログシリーズは下記にご覧ください）と
四国を結ぶ一連の橋で、瀬戸内海の絶景を楽しめるルートです。
近年は、名建築を巡る風光明媚なサイクリングコースとして自治体もPRしており、
サイクリング大会も開催されています。

At 70 kilometers long, Shimanami Kaido’s “Cycling Road” is Japan’s first road where you can cross the sea by bicycle. I did not have the chance to cycle this trip, but there are plenty of shops along the route that conveniently rent out bicycles and even motorbikes.

しまなみ海道の「サイクリングロード」は、全長70kmで、
日本で初めて自転車で海を渡ることができる道路です。
今回、私は自転車で行く機会がなかったのですが、
沿道には自転車やバイクを貸し出してくれる便利なお店がたくさんあります。

Mandarin Oranges　
みかん

In Japan, Wakayama Prefecture is the largest producer of citrus fruits by volume, but Ehime produces the most variety of mandarin orange by species. I never knew that there were so many different species of mandarin oranges, but apparently, since mandarins are easily crossed with other varieties of citrus fruits, there are nearly 200 varieties of mandarins globally.

柑橘類の生産量では和歌山県が日本一ですが、
ミカンの品種では愛媛県が一番多く生産しています。
ミカンにこれほど多くの種類があるとは知りませんでしたが、
ミカンは他の柑橘類と交配しやすいため、世界には200種類近くのミカンの品種があるようですよ！

Ehime Wagyu Beef
愛媛和牛

I think most people would instantly think that as an island, Ehime would have great seafood.  Ehime’s symbol fish is sea bream, and one of the most famous local dishes is Tai-meshi (Seasoned Rice Cooked with Red Sea Bream). However, I personally enjoyed their wagyu beef a lot! It has perhaps not been marketed as well, but was very reasonably priced with fabulous marbling.

島国である愛媛は、海産物が美味しいとすぐに思う人が多いと思います。
愛媛のシンボルフィッシュは鯛で、有名な郷土料理は「鯛めし」です。
しかし、個人的には和牛がとても美味しかった！！！
和牛はあまり市場に出回っていないのか、
とてもリーズナブルで、霜降りが素晴らしい。

My good friend, Jérôme Chouchan, CEO & President of Godiva Chocolatier for Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand, has told me of his endeavors to promote more collaborations between Godiva and regional products. It was my first time to try one of the regional limited-edition products at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Matsuyama.

私の親友であるゴディバ ショコラティエの日本、
韓国、東南アジア、インド、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドの
CEO兼社長のジェローム・シュシャン氏は、
ゴディバと地域限定商品のコラボレーションをもっと推進しようと努力していると話していました。
松山三越の地域限定商品を初めて食べてみた。

I tried a Godiva roll cake produced in collaboration with a local Ehime cake company and the Godiva chocolate drink with mandarin oranges produced from Ehime. The dark chocolate and orange peel combination has always been one of my favorites, so I especially enjoyed the drink!

地元愛媛のケーキ会社とコラボしたゴディバのロールケーキと、
愛媛県産のみかんを使ったゴディバのチョコレートドリンクを飲んでみました。
ダークチョコレートとオレンジピールの組み合わせは昔から好きなので、
特にドリンクは美味しくいただきました！

Catching up at a bistro with President and CEO of Godiva Japan Jérôme Chouchan during my birthday month last year. He has been one of my role models, and I am constantly inspired by his many insights and stories about dreams, ambitions, and how to hit your target. In particular, his advice about focusing on the form and approach, rather than actual financial targets in a business setting has very much led our company mission and vision at SeiRogai, Inc. If you focus on the right process, the result will naturally come.

We had productive meetings with local government representatives from the Ehime Prefectural Government, Matsuyama City Hall, and Imabari City Hall. We had the opportunity to introduce our services at SeiRogai, Inc. and discuss areas where we could contribute to supporting the local economy, especially with our strength in international media production, inbound tourism promotion, and overseas business networks.

We also did not want to miss the opportunity to interact with local residents and business leaders. Thanks to an introduction from a good friend, we had the opportunity to meet with Optima Ventures CEO Mr. Hiroyuki Miyagawa, and the Matsuyama Office Representative Mr. Yasusuke Inami of Chuo Kaikei, Inc. (the company that operates the co-working facility, Matsuyaman Space), at a café in Dogo Onsen. It was great fun to learn more about Ehime Prefecture from their perspective, as well as their future goals and new initiatives to promote the region.

また、地域の住民や経営者たちとの交流の機会も逃したくはなかった。
親友の紹介で、道後温泉のカフェで、
オプティマ・ベンチャーズ株式会社の代表取締役社長 宮川博之様と、
コワーキング施設「マツヤマンスペース」を運営する
中央会計株式会社の松山オフィス代表の取締役　稲見益輔様とお会いすることが出来ました。
お二人の視点から見た愛媛県について、
また今後の目標や地域振興のための新しい取り組みについて知ることができ、
とても楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。

Telework Facilities

テレワーク施設について

Pretty much everywhere we went throughout the Prefecture we had access to the “EHIME FREE WIFI” network, which to our surprise, was actually quite good to use. Whenever we travel outside of Tokyo, we tend to have difficulty finding places that allow “drop-ins” for teleworking. However, the 3 facilities that we used in Ehime Prefecture all provided us the flexibility to use the co-working space without having to register for a long-term membership plan.

県内のほとんどの場所で「EHIME FREE WIFI」のネットワークにアクセスすることができ、
驚いたことに、実際に使ってみると非常に良かったのです。
東京以外では、テレワークのために「立ち入り」ができる場所を探すのに苦労することがあります。
しかし、今回利用した愛媛県の3施設は、いずれも長期の会員登録をしなくても、
コワーキングスペースを自由に利用できるようになっていました。

In Matsuyama City, we used TECH.IS and Matsuyaman Space.

TECH.I.S was convenient for us as they had a 2 hour drop in plan at 800 yen per person with free coffee and tea! Perfect for stopping by for a bit of work in between meetings and exploring the nearby shopping arcade.

We very much appreciated the free trial day at Matsuyaman Space though, and would go back again to use their day plan (their day use plan is 2000 yen/day). The staff informed us that they will be opening a new building from March.

However, the one small gripe I had is about parking – for a rural area where everyone needs a car to get around, it was surprising to us that parking should be difficult to find! Moreover, for the coworking spaces in Matsuyama City, no parking is provided, and if staying for the whole day, the parking fee can cost more than the actual coworking space usage fee. Haha.

松山市では、TECH.I.S（テックアイエス）と「まつやまんスペース」を利用しました。

TECH.I.Sは、2時間のドロップインプランで1人800円、コーヒー・お茶も無料！ということで、
便利でした。会議の合間のちょっとした作業や、近くの商店街の散策に最適です。

また、まつやまんスペースの無料体験はとてもありがたく、
ドロップインプラン（1日2000円）を利用するためにまた行きたいと思います。
3月からは新館がオープンするそうです。

しかし、1つだけ小さな不満があるとすれば、駐車場についてです。
誰もが移動に車を必要とする地方で、駐車場を見つけるのが難しいというのは驚きでした！
また、コワーキングスペースの場合、駐車場は1日1回しか利用できません。
しかも、松山市内のコワーキングスペースの場合、駐車場が用意されておらず、
丸一日滞在すると、実際のコワーキングスペース利用料よりも
駐車場代の方が高くつくこともあるんです。(笑）

In Imabari City, we used OMISHIMA SPACE. This facility is unique as they are a refurbished farmhouse and also provide accommodations. The surroundings were beautiful and the day use plan was very reasonable at only 1,100 yen (tax inclusive) for the day. However, advance reservation is required as they are not open every day and transportation can be a bit burdensome as you have to go across several bridges from center of Imabari City (where most hotels are) and the tolls can add up.

今治市では、OMISHIMA SPACEを利用しました。この施設は、
農家を改装して宿泊施設も併設しているのが特徴です。
周辺環境も美しく、デイユースプランは1日1,100円（税込）と非常にリーズナブルでした。
ただし、毎日営業しているわけではないので事前予約が必要なことと、
今治市の中心部（多くのホテルがある場所）からいくつかの橋を渡らなければならず、
通行料がかさむので交通の便が少し悪くなることがあります。

Conclusion

最後に。。。

Ehime Prefecture is the first place in Shikoku we visited, and it was an enjoyable experience! We were initially worried about whether we could actually stay in the region for an extended period of time while still keeping up with our work schedules. We were surprised at the high quality of coworking spaces provided with stable internet access. Fresh mandarin oranges, friendly local residents, scenic seafront spots, all make Ehime memorable. This time, I did not have much time to do sightseeing, but I would like to visit the castles as well as other cities in the Prefecture on my  next visit. I have no doubt there is much history and so many special stories left waiting to be told.

愛媛県は、私たちが初めて訪れた四国の地域で、
とても楽しい体験ができました。
当初は、仕事のスケジュールをこなしながら、
本当に長期滞在できるのか心配でした。
しかし、安定したインターネット環境を備えた
コワーキングスペースのクオリティの高さには驚かされました。
新鮮なミカン、フレンドリーな地元の人々、風光明媚な海辺のスポットなど、
愛媛は思い出に残る場所です。今回は観光する時間があまりありませんでしたが、
次回はお城や県内の他の都市も訪れてみたいです。
きっと多くの歴史と特別な物語が残されているに違いないと思いますね。

In 2020, just before the coronavirus pandemic hit and changed so many lives around the world, I had rung in the new year at Zojoji Temple. In Japan, many people visit temples and shrines during the new year to do “Hatsumōde ” (初詣), or the first prayer and wish of the new year.

2020年、コロナ感染症が大流行し、
世界中の人々の生活が一変する直前、
私は増上寺で新年を迎えました。
日本では、新年になると多くの人が寺社を訪れ、

About New Year’s Eve or Ōmisoka in Japan:

Ōmisoka or ōtsugomori is a Japanese traditional celebration on the last day of the year. Traditionally, it was held on the final day of the 12th lunar month. With Japan’s switch to using the Gregorian calendar at the beginning of the Meiji era, December 31 is now used for the celebration.

As part of the celebrations, at midnight, many visit a shinto shrine or temple for Hastumode, or the first shrine/temple visit of the year. Throughout Japan, Shinto shrines prepare amazake (sweet sake) to pass out to crowds that gather as midnight approaches. Most Buddhist temples have a large bonshō (Buddhist bell) that is struck once for each of the 108 earthly temptations believed to cause human suffering. When seeing someone for the last time before the new year, it is traditional to say “Yoi o-toshi wo” (良いお年を, lit. “Have a good New Year”). The traditional first greeting after the beginning of the New Year is “Akemashite omedetō (明けましておめでとう, lit. “congratulations on the new year”).

2023年、増上寺の初詣

As we are entering the post-covid era, I find myself again returning to Zojoji Temple in the new year. Although this time, it is related to our upcoming project filming a virtual tour of Zojoji Temple in collaboration with Minato City.

ポストコロナの時代を迎え、新年早々、
またまた増上寺に足を運ぶことになりました。
今回は、港区との連携で、
増上寺のバーチャルツアーを撮影するプロジェクトに関連してのことです。

During the first week of the new year, we visited Zojoji Temple not only for Hatumode, but also to interview some of the monks and key representatives of the temple for our production.

新年最初の週は、初詣のためだけでなく、
バーチャルツアー制作のためにお坊さんやお寺の主要な代表者を取材するために増上寺を訪れました。

Watching the Sunrise

Another popular activity for starting off the new year in Japan is to catch the sunrise. I recently had the good fortune to catch several beautiful sunrises while filming, including the below photos when I visited Tochigi Prefecture.

日本の新しい年の始まりにふさわしいもうひとつの人気アクティビティは、
日の出を拝むことです。私は最近、栃木県を訪れた際、
幸運にも以下の写真を含め、撮影中にいくつかの美しい日の出を見ることができました。

To me, the sunrise is a reminder that there is always something to look forward to. Every sunrise brings with it the promise of a new beginning. No matter how dark and cold the night may have been, the sun will always rise again.

私にとって日の出は、いつも何かを期待させるものです。
朝日が昇るたびに、新たな始まりが約束されるのです。
どんなに暗くて寒い夜でも、太陽は必ず昇るのです。

So, when we see the sunrise at the beginning of a new year, we can take a moment to reflect on all the good that is yet to come. And have hope that this year will be a better day than year before, starting with a new day.

だから、新しい年の始まりに日の出を見るとき、

私たちはこれから起こるであろうすべての良いことを振り返る時間を持つことができます。

そして、新しい一日から始まる今年が、一昨年よりも良い一日になるように希望を持ちましょう。
