「梯子」は、成功へのキャリアパスを表現するためによく使われる典型的な比喩ですね。しかし、変化する現代社会では、どのようなステップが成功につながるのか、また、どのようなチャンスが訪れるのか、予測することはできません。COVID-19の大流行は、この現実を多くの人に明らかにしました。このように、コロナ禍によって、多くの人々は、キャリアアップのために、より名誉ある肩書きやより高額な報酬を得るという単純な道ではなく、岩壁を一歩づつ登るようにキャリアアップをすることが一般的になってきています。

Have you been rock climbing before? Recently, I was in Krabi, Thailand, which is famous for its dramatic limestone mountains making it one of the top rock-climbing destinations in the world.

皆様はロッククライミングをしたことがありますか？最近、私はタイのクラビに行ってきました。クラビは石灰岩の山で有名で、世界でも有数のロッククライミングの盛んなところです。

Rock climbing is not easy. At the start, I was determined to make it to the top with the straightest path possible. However, I soon realized that was not the solution. Especially when climbing for the first time, I relied heavily on the cues from my instructor as well as friends on the ground to guide me to the right footholds. Often, from their vantage point, they would be able to point out the right nooks and crannies, even those that I could not see, to reach for and continue climbing.  

ロッククライミングは簡単ではありません。最初は、できるだけまっすぐな道で頂上を目指そうと思っていました。しかし、それでは解決しないことにすぐに気がつきました。特に初めてのクライミングでは、インストラクターや地上にいる友人の合図を頼りに、正しい足場へ誘導してもらうことが多かったです。度々、見晴らしの良い地点から私が見えなくてもありとあらゆる所で、私がクライミングを続けられるように誘導してくれました。

I was struck by how the actual experience and process of climbing a rock wall did appropriately reflect the pursuit of a career in our modern society. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the world, it also instigated many, myself included, to reevaluate my professional trajectory and consider new directions.

岩壁を登るという実際の体験とそのプロセスが、現代社会におけるキャリアの追求を適切に反映していることに驚かされたのです。COVID-19が世界を混乱させましたが、私を含め、多くの人が自分の仕事人生を見直し、新しい方向性を考えるきっかけとなりました。

Some of you may know that I had been working at a Japanese private equity fund leading business development on the investment management team while at the same time also co-founded a media production company in Tokyo. Since last year, I have focused more of my time attention on my own company instead. As a media company specializing in the tourism industry and international content, we were hard hit by the travel bans due to COVID-19. My partner and I had established the company in 2019 in anticipation of the Olympics and were looking forward to also getting started on filming new original content with our international production partners. Unfortunately, the coronavirus threw us a huge curveball. With international travel to Japan still restricted now even after 2 years since the first state of emergency declaration, all of our projects have been cancelled or require re-development. Hence, I have been quite preoccupied with pivoting our business plans – it has been a challenging time, but I have loved the opportunity to learn so many new things every day. After putting in so much hard work to learn about and develop businesses in a new industry, it truly makes the fruits of your labor all that much sweeter.

ご存知の方もいらっしゃると思いますが、私は日本の投資会社で投資運用チームの事業開発を担当する傍ら、東京でメディア制作会社を共同設立していました。昨年からは、より多くの時間を自分の会社に注いでいます。観光産業と海外コンテンツに特化したメディア企業である当社は、コロナ禍による渡航禁止措置で大きな打撃を受けました。私とビジネスパートナー達は、オリンピックを見越して2019年に会社を設立し、海外の制作パートナー達と一緒に新しいオリジナルコンテンツの撮影にも着手することを楽しみにしていました。しかし残念ながら、コロナは私たちに大きなカーブボールを投げてきました。最初の緊急事態宣言から2年経った今でも日本への海外渡航は制限されており、私たちのプロジェクトはすべてキャンセルされるか、再構築が必要となっています。そのため、私はビジネスプランの見直しで頭がいっぱいでしたが、新しい業界を知り、今はビジネスを展開するために苦労した分、その苦労が報われるような気がします。

Over the last year and a half, there have been a lot of tears and frustrations with setbacks, but also a lot of joy and relief with every win, no matter how small. I personally experienced and began to understand why we should think of our career as climbing a rock wall with lateral movements, rather than a ladder.

この1年半、挫折で泣いたり悔しい思いをしたこともありましたが、どんなに小さな勝利でも喜びや安堵を感じることもたくさんありました。私自身、キャリアを梯子ではなく、水平移動で岩壁を登るように考えるべき理由を体験し、理解し始めました。

Moving forward is the most important to achieving new heights – Even if you do not know specifically how to get to your vision, taking charge of your own life and driving yourself forward is the essential action to get you there. When climbing a rock wall, you will not likely be able to see the top very clearly. Yet, as long as you keep moving, you will get there eventually.

高みを目指すには、前進することが何よりも大切です。たとえビジョンに到達するための具体的な方法が分からなくても、自分の人生を自分でコントロールし、前進することが、そこに到達するために不可欠な行動なのです。岩壁を登るとき、頂上はあまりよく見えないかもしれません。でも、前に進んでいれば、いずれはそこに到達できます。

Be careful not to wait too long. If you tire yourself out while hanging on and waiting, you will not have the same level of energy to be bold and to take action up a new path.

長く待ち過ぎないように注意しましょう。ぶら下がって待っている間に自分を疲れさせてしまうと、大胆に新しい道を切り開くための行動を起こすエネルギーがなくなってしまうからです。

It is okay to take a break from the climb (such as taking a career break due to personal or family issues) and enjoy the view a little. Taking the time to refresh and reflect a little before climbing again can do wonders for helping you achieve the next level when you return to the wall. You may even decide to climb up a totally different part of the wall (e.g., changing jobs or industries), and may discover that area to be better suited for your skills!

個人的な状況や家族の関係でキャリアを中断するなど、クライミングから離れることは問題ありません。再び登る前に少しリフレッシュして考える時間を持つことは、壁に戻ったときに次のレベルを達成するために大いに役立ちます。また、転職や業種転換などで、全く別の場所を登ることになり、その場所の方が自分のスキルに合っていることに気づくかもしれません。

Thanks to a good friend, Mr. Masahiro Yamigawa, who is currently teaching classes at Rikkyo University, I had the opportunity to give a guest seminar to his students where I shared 3 perspectives from my recent experiences. Masa was one of the first friends I had met in Japan through an introduction from a mutual friend in South Korea. He has always been generous and kind to share his advice and perspective, and is someone whom I admire deeply for his dedication to his family and ability to adapt to complex situations. I was humbled that he invited me to speak to his students.

現在、立教大学で教鞭をとっている友達の 山際 正洋さんのおかげで、彼の学生たちにゲスト・セミナーを行う機会があり、私の最近の経験から3つの視点を共有することができました。山際さんは、韓国での共通の友人からの紹介で、私が日本で出会った最初の友人の一人です。彼はいつも寛大で親切にアドバイスや見解を教えてくれ、家族への献身や複雑な状況への適応能力など、私が深く尊敬している人です。その彼が、自分の生徒たちに話をするために私を招待してくれたことに、私は身の引き締まる思いがしました。

Last Thoughts…

Like climbing the rock wall, career development is a unique journey and process. Promotions are not the only way to advance your career. In fact, in my experience, the leaders who transitioned to different industries and were able to leverage lateral thinking to jump in their careers, were able to build deeper knowledge and stronger relationships. Moving sideways is not a failure or a setback, but simply an alternate route. Avoid the trap of thinking that the only measures of career success are to climb the corporate ladder for a better title or higher salary in a stable job. Instead, focus on what you can learn wherever you are, and look for the opportunities that are available at every stage of your career and life journey. Ultimately, maintaining an open mindset that focuses on constantly learning will take you a long way—we can all learn and try something new, regardless of how much knowledge, success and experience we believe we already have accumulated.

最後に。。。

岩壁を登るように、キャリア開発は独自の旅とプロセスです。キャリアアップの方法は昇進だけではありません。実際、私の経験では、異業種に転身し、「Lateral Thinking（ラテラルシンキング：既成概念に捉われない思考）」を活用してキャリアをジャンプさせたリーダーは、より深い知識とより強い人間関係を築くことができたのです。横道に逸れることは、失敗や後退ではなく、単なる代替ルートに過ぎないのです。キャリアの成功の唯一の尺度は、安定した仕事でより良い肩書きや高い給料を求めて会社の梯子を上ることだと考える罠は避けてください。その代わり、どこにいても学べることに焦点を当て、キャリアと人生の旅のあらゆる段階で利用できる機会を探しましょう。最終的には、常に学ぶことに焦点を当てたオープンな考え方を維持することで、長い道のりを歩むことができるのです。

The Harvard Prize Book in Japan during COVID　

コロナ禍の日本のハーバードプライズブック

Since I moved to Japan in 2017, I have presented the annual Harvard Prize Book on behalf of the Harvard Club at various high schools in Japan. The awards ceremony is typically held at the end of the school year between March to June. Last year, with the onset of the global pandemic, it was not possible to hold in-person ceremonies as non-essential businesses were shut down, and people were urged to stay home and socially distance to slow the spread of the then-novel coronavirus. Although many schools had to cancel their ceremonies, I was glad to be still able to speak to the 2019 winner of Junten High School, Miss Yoshino Kanauchi (金内佳乃). 

2017年に日本に移住して以来、私はハーバードクラブを代表して、毎年日本の様々な高校で「Harvard Prize Book」を贈呈しています。授賞式は通常、3月から6月の学年末に行われます。昨年は、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の防止により、自宅待機や社会的な距離を置くことが求められたため、授賞式は取り止めになりました。多くの学校が式典を中止しましたが、2019年度の受賞者である順天高等学校の金内佳乃さんにオンラインでお話しができてよかったです。

This year is the first time the Harvard Prize Book Awards were presented virtually, and I was humbled to contribute to the ceremony as the Alumni Awards Presenter for Japan.

From March to June 2021, I prepared a speech addressed to the high school students screened at the awards ceremonies, and met virtually with some of the winners to discuss their interests, ambitions, and dreams.

今年はハーバード・プライズ・ブック賞が初めてバーチャルで授与され、私は日本の同窓賞プレゼンターとして式典に貢献できたことを光栄に思います。

Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
 
ハーバードプライズブックの受賞者の皆様、おめでとうございます！
 
ハーバードプライズブックは、色々な分野での優れた成績及び高い徳性を備えた人間性を表す、高校２年生の極めて優秀な学生に授与されます。
 
As someone who has achieved success in many different areas, you should be proud of yourself. I hope that you will consider the opportunities at Harvard and studying liberal arts. 
 
多くの異なる分野で成功を収めた人として、皆さんは自分自身を誇りに思うべきです。 ハーバード大学を経験する機会やリベラルアーツの勉強をぜひ検討してください。
 
2020 was a difficult year for many of us. The impact of the coronavirus makes it tough to plan for an uncertain future. 
 
2020年は私たちの多くにとって大変な年でした。 コロナウイルスの影響により、不確実な将来を計画することは困難です。
 
When I graduated high school and was considering being the first in my family to go to college, it was in 2008 and during the global financial crisis at that time. It was not the best year for international students to consider going to the U.S., and although I was worried about going so far away from my family and my home to venture to a foreign country alone, I took a chance and applied anyway, thinking I would never get in. 
 
 
私が高校を卒業し、家族の中で初めて大学に進学することを考えていた2008年当時は、世界的な金融危機の最中でした。アメリカに留学することを考えるのに最適な年ではなく、家族や家から遠く離れて思い切って一人で外国に行くことを心配しましたが、とにかくチャンスを掴んで入学申請をしました。けれども、絶対に入学できないと思っていました。
 
However, to my surprise, I received an offer and pursued a liberal arts education. Although I have faced many challenges since then, I have never regretted it. 
 
 しかし、驚いたことに、私は入学の内定を受け、リベラルアーツ教育を追求しました。 それ以来、多くの課題に直面してきましたが、後悔したことは一度もありません。
 
I cannot imagine what it is like to be in high school during this covid pandemic - perhaps many of you will feel insecure about the future, intimidated by expectations and fearful of the unknown. I am telling you this because, even now, I sometimes feel the same way. 
 
 この激しいコロナ禍の中での高校生活というのはどういうものか想像できません。おそらく多くの皆さんは、期待する・されることに怯え、未知のものを恐れ、将来について不安を感じるでしょう。私が皆さんにこのことを伝えるのは、私は今でも同じように感じることがあるからです。
 
Throughout history, uncertainty and global crises have happened before, and might happen again in the future. COVID will also come to pass. 
歴史を通して、不確実性と世界的な危機は以前にも起こったことがあり、将来に再び起こるかもしれません。 COVIDも収束するでしょう。
 
When it does, YOU are the generation that will be leading our future in the post-COVID new normal. Stay positive – you are not alone.
 
 その時は、皆さんはCOVID後のニューノーマルにおいて私達の未来をリードする世代です。ポジティブであり続けてください。皆さんは一人ではありません。
 
I can understand it must be confusing for any of you to consider studying overseas when so many travel restrictions are in place. Nonetheless, I have always believed that with great challenges comes great opportunities. 

 非常に多くの旅行制限が課せられているときに、留学を検討することは、皆さんにとって混乱を招くに違いないことを理解できます。それでもなお、私は常に大きな挑戦には大きなチャンスが来ると信じてきました。
 
In fact, the best time to try new things is during times like this when nobody can tell what the future will be. So, even if you try something really crazy and it fails, everything is changing anyway, and there really is no right or wrong! 
 
 事実、新しいことに挑戦するのに最適な時期は、このように未来がどうなるか誰にもわからない時期です。 だから、皆さんが本当にクレイジーなことを試みて失敗したとしても、とにかくすべてが変化していているので、本当に何が正しいのか何が悪いのかもありません！
 
Take every opportunity to try new things, even if you think they may never succeed. Who knows – it may lead you to discover something you might have thought was impossible before! 
成功しないかもしれないと思っていても、あらゆる機会を利用して新しいことに挑戦してください。 誰にもわからないけれど、それはあなたが以前は不可能だと思っていたかもしれない何かを発見することにつながるかもしれないです！
 
 
Ultimately, this pandemic has made a lot more people reflect on what is truly important. 
I’ve learned, that as people get older, they tend to think back on their younger years to figure out their dreams and life passions. However, by then it is often too late, and they regret having lost precious time. In contrast, you can do it now!  
 
 最終的に、このパンデミックにより、より多くの人々が本当に重要なことについて考えるようになりました。
私は、人々が年をとるにつれて、彼らが自分の夢と人生の情熱を見つけ出すために若い頃を振り返る傾向があることに気づきました。しかし、その時には手遅れになることが多く、貴重な時間を失ったことを後悔しています。 それとは対照的に、皆さんは今それができます！
 
Take some time to think about the changes you would like to see in the world, and what you can do towards achieving that goal. You can start small – even just in your local community! 
 
 皆さんが世界を見たいと思うその変化と、その目標を達成するために何ができるかに時間をかけて考えてください。例え皆さんが地元のコミュニティだけにいたとしても小さなことから始めることができます！
 
As nobody knows what the post-covid future will be, it is even more important to realize that a good plan today is better than an excellent plan months or years from now. What you do now, WILL make an impact in your future. 
 
 ポストCOVIDの将来がどうなるかは誰にもわからないので、今日の良い計画は、数か月または数年後の素晴らしい計画よりも優れていることを認識することがさらに重要です。 あなたが今、何をするかが、あなたの将来に影響を与えるでしょう。
 
I would like to leave you with a challenge – as we enter an ever-connected digital era, it is a contradiction that so many people find themselves isolated and alone. Take a moment every day to reach out to someone – whether they are your loved ones, your schoolmates, or even those that you’ve had a falling out with! Many times, your actions may not have immediate results, but in the long run, you will be amazed to find how important those seemingly insignificant human connections may be. 

 私は皆さんに挑戦を残したいと思いますー私たちが絶えずデジタルで接続された時代の一員であるのに、非常に多くの人々が自分自身を孤立して孤独に感じることは矛盾することです。
 毎日少しの時間を作って、誰かに手を差し伸べてください。その人達はあなたの愛する人、あなたの学友、あるいはあなたが仲違いした人であっても！ 多くの場合、皆さんの行動はすぐには結果が出ないかもしれませんが、長期的には、それらの些細な人間のつながりがどれほど重要であるかを知って驚くことでしょう。
 
 
As your semester comes to a close, it is my wish to all of you that you continue to stay ambitious, encouraged, resilient, and above all, hopeful. 
In the spirit of the Harvard Prize Book, the more that you read, write, learn, and experience, the more you will come to know and the further you will go. 
 
 皆さんの学期が終わりに近づく頃、私は皆さんが意欲的で、勇気を与えられ、立ち直りが早く、そして何よりも希望に満ちたままでいることを願っています。

Virtual Meetings with some of the HPB 2020 winners

After the awards ceremony, I had virtual meetings with this year’s winners along with several other promising students from Junten High School, Shibuya Makuhari High School, and Saint Maur International School. I was very impressed by the high level of achievement of these talented young students!

授賞式の後、私は今年の受賞者と、順天高等学校、渋谷幕張高等学校、サンモール国際学校の有望な生徒たちとバーチャルミーティングを行いました。才能豊かな若い学生たちの高いレベルの成果に感銘を受けました！

Junten Junior and Senior High School

順天中学・高等学校

Sae lived in the U.S. from the age of 5 to 10. Inspired by “I am Malala,” she developed an interest in education in developing countries. In 2019, she volunteered in Cambodia and also organized a crowdfunding campaign to support education for needy children, raising 100,000 yen in four days. In the future, Sae hopes to study pedagogy in developing countries at Sophia University and study abroad.

紗慧さんは、5歳から10歳までアメリカで過ごした帰国子女です。

「私はマララ」に感銘を受け、途上国の教育支援活動に興味を持ちました。

2019年(高1)に、カンボジア教育支援ボランティアツアーに参加、それ以来継続してカンボジア教育支援活動を続けています。

また、教育支援のためのクラウドファンディングを主催し、4日間で10万円の資金を集め、支援活動に役立てました。

将来は、途上国の教育学を上智大学で学び総合人間科学部の小松太郎教授に指示したいと考えています。在学中に海外留学もして知見を広めたいと考えています。

Rika is an active member of the English Debate Club and the Model United Nations Club, and has achieved excellent results in competitions such as the National High School Debate Tournament and the National Parliamentary Debate Federation Cup. She also won an award for excellence at the National Model United Nations Competition for High School Education. She aspires to go to medical school and study abroad in the future.

脇田理花さんは、帰国生のリーディングクラス及びライティングクラスにおいて際立って優秀な成績をおさめています。また、English Debate Club及び模擬国連部に所属しており、全国高校生ディベート大会および全国パーラメンタリーディベート連盟杯などにおいて優秀な成績を収めました。そして、全国高校教育模擬国連大会において優秀賞を獲得しました。医学部に進学を希望しており、将来はぜひ留学をしたいと考えています。

Saint Maur International School

Jan is a citizen of the Czech Republic who attended elementary school in Prague during Grades 1-4. In 2014, he and his family moved to Yokohama, where they have lived ever since, and he entered Grade 5 at Saint Maur. He quickly adjusted to life in a new environment as well as an unfamiliar language, and he has been an excellent student and an active participant in sports, music, speech, and drama throughout his years here. (Impressively, he speaks Czech, English, Japanese, and Spanish.)

Jan’s academic interests at the university level include European Law, International Law, Politics, and Environmental Issues. He is currently investigating higher education in the European Union (E.U.) and is considering both research universities and liberal arts colleges.

Janさんはチェコ人で、Grade 1-4の間はプラハの小学校に通っていました。2014年に家族と一緒に横浜に引っ越し、それ以来、横浜に住んでいる彼は、サンモールのGrade 5に入学しました。慣れない環境や言葉にもすぐに慣れ、成績優秀で、スポーツ・音楽・スピーチ・演劇にも積極的に参加しています。驚くべきことに、彼はチェコ語・英語・日本語・スペイン語を話すことができます！

大学では、ヨーロッパ法・国際法・政治・環境問題などを専攻したいと考えています。現在、欧州連合（E.U.）の高等教育について調査しており、研究大学とリベラルアーツカレッジの両方を検討しています。

Reflections

最後の一言

Harvard Alumni originated the Harvard Book Prize Awards Program in 1910 as part of an effort to attract the attention of talented students to the opportunities at the university. Today, more than 1900 Prize Books, sponsored by local Alumni, are awarded in schools worldwide.

As an alumni presenter of the Harvard Book Prize Awards and a member of the Harvard Club of Japan committee, I wish to encourage more students to think broadly about where they apply to college. While admission to Harvard is perceived as very competitive, it does seek out talented students around the world, and I do genuinely believe one will never know their full potential if they do not take risks and try new things, even if it may seem impossible to achieve at the start.

ハーバード大学の同窓生は、1910年に、優秀な学生に大学での様々な機会に目を向けさせるための活動の一環として、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞プログラムを創設しました。現在では、世界中の学校で1900冊以上の本が同窓生によって寄贈されています。

私は、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞のプレゼンターとして、また日本ハーバード・クラブの委員として、一人でも多くの学生に志望校を広く考えてもらいたいと思っています。ハーバード大学は競争が激しいと言われていますが、世界中の優秀な学生を求めていますし、たとえ最初は無理だと思っても、リスクを取って新しいことに挑戦しなければ、自分の可能性を最大限に発揮することはできないと私は心から信じています。

In Japan, I have noticed that many students still choose to pursue their college studies domestically in Japan, opting only for a study abroad stint rather than to challenge completing their full B.A. degree at a university abroad. However, such a short study abroad or exchange program, or limiting their consideration of studying overseas to only graduate school, is simply not the same. It cannot replace the experience of studying in a new country during one’s formative college years, as those years have tremendous potential to shape one’s future decisions and opportunities. As someone who has experienced this in my own life personally, I am a firm believer and advocate for students to gain immersive experience and exposure to living in different countries and cultures at a younger age. 

日本では、海外の大学でB.A.を取得するよりも、留学だけして国内で大学生活を送る学生が多いように感じます。しかし、そのような短期留学や交換留学、あるいは海外留学を大学院に限定して考えることは、決して同じではありません。形成期である大学時代に新しい国で勉強するという経験は、その人の将来の意思決定や機会を形成する大きな可能性を持っているため、それに代わるものではありません。私自身がこのような経験をした者として、私は学生が若いうちに異なる国や文化の中で生活する経験を積むべきだと確信し、提唱しています。

Interview with David Hulme

Rachel: You mentioned that you discovered a wasabi patch during one of your hikes in Okutama. What was the turning point or moment of inspiration for you to move to Okutama and grow your own wasabi patch?

David: At first we were not thinking seriously about growing wasabi, even though we had friends who were wasabi growers. Personally, I was ready to leave my city job and working remotely – writing and editing – in Okutama became a viable option.

Rachel: As a former journalist in downtown Tokyo turned now wasabi grower in Okutama, could you talk about your experience of the transition career-wise as well as personally? Was it difficult for you to adjust? What was the most challenging aspect?

David: Adjusting was easy. We had been here many times and preferred this area to the city. Also, we had friends in the area already. All our friends and neighbours have been very welcoming and generous.

The most challenging aspect for me is language. My Japanese is still weak.

Rachel: During the tour, you mentioned that most of the seedlings used in Okutama are from Shizuoka, but that many small Okutama wasabi growers encounter issues procuring enough seedlings as the larger farms tend to sell in large quantities, is that right? What is currently being done to address this?

David: That’s right. We have been talking about this with other growers for some time. In September we formed a new group called Okutama Shogun Wasabi Development in order to address the seedling problem. Some of us had collected seeds in the spring and we negotiated for space in a vinyl shed to sow them. More than a thousand little wasabi plants are thriving there now. It’s a start.

Rachel: How does Okutama’s wasabi industry compare to other regions in Japan?

David: I don’t have reliable comparative data. I do know that we don’t have the mass-production of other regions. Our biggest grower produces about 50,00 plants per year, compared to over 300,000 for Nagano-ken’s Daio farm alone.

Rachel: What is the most surprising thing you have learned or encountered since you started trying to grow your own wasabi?

David: One thing that surprised me is that growers overseas are so secretive and monopolistic. They are supplying a market in which demand is absolutely impossible to satisfy, so there is no need to exaggerate the difficulties of growing wasabi and talk the price up.

Rachel: What motivates you the most about living in Okutama and about wasabi farming? What is most meaningful to you?

David: It’s the sense of involvement, contributing to an activity that has deep meaning for the community. I should add that people here help each other in a very natural way, and exchange gifts as well. When crops are in surplus, we share. It turns out that everyone owes everyone else in the village more than they will ever be able to pay. It is a bond, not a burden.

Rachel: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing wasabi growers in Japan?

David: Encouraging younger growers. At the moment, wasabi growing is like many traditional Japanese crafts, with elderly experts taking their knowledge to the grave. We need to streamline the market (online direct-to-consumer) so that working relatively small wasabi becomes financially viable for younger people. Right now, what growers get on the wholesale market is too low.

Rachel: What are some common misunderstandings about the wasabi plant and wasabi growing?

David: There are quite a few. First, wasabi and horseradish are totally different plants. Horseradish is a root, but the part of wasabi that we grind to eat is the stem. The plant is a brassica, like broccoli. Another elusive fact is that water is the most important factor in growing wasabi. The plant grows best in water that has spent weeks or months seeping through mountain rock strata, gathering dissolved minerals, then emerging as spring water at a temperature near 12 degrees Centigrade. In addition, this mineral-rich water should nourish the roots of the plant by flowing through rock and gravel to a depth of 15-20cm, providing a steady supply of oxygen as well as minerals. So, we should plow by hand to that depth. Oxygen keeps the plant vigorous and healthy, while minerals interact to impart flavor and pungency.

Rachel: What would be the biggest source of support that you would like to see more of?

David: Japanese citizens of urban Tokyo. This is not just about wasabi, but also about rural revitalization in general. We have no excuse because we are so close to one of the biggest and best markets in the world. The main themes are job migration (including telecommuting and new industries) and reforestation (replacing toxic sugi trees with native species of oak, cherry, maple, walnut, etc). The future of our region has to be a partnership between urban and rural.

Rachel: Related to the main themes for rural revitalization, what other local industries do you feel could have great potential for growth (besides agriculture) that would boost the local economy?

David: We see natural reforestation as the basis for the region’s future. There are many economic, environmental, and health reasons for eliminating most of the sugi trees, but we need a sustainable strategy. What we advocate is a new industry catering to DIY, cabinetmaking, woodcraft, and decorative timbers (regional natives include varieties of oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and keyaki). That means sustainably harvesting native trees and encouraging replacement strategies. Forest management science is missing. It is crucial to the sustainable management of future forest resources. I have had many conversations with Europeans who understand forestry as a respected profession. In Japan, forestry is regarded as labor. This must change. Identifying major business opportunities will change it. It’s a 300-year project, but to have such long legs it must be sustainable and profitable from the outset.

Rachel: 300 years is a long time to wait for change, but it has to start somewhere. Any advice or words of encouragement that you can share with others who might be thinking of following in your footsteps to move to Okutama?

David: Visit often. Get to know the locals. It’s worth it.

We can draw a contrast. Do you prefer an hour commute both ways to a location that is not actually specific for your work (especially if that work is mostly online)? Or; could you eliminate the commute and spend that time fishing or gardening, then work surrounded by beauty and be happier, more efficient, and more productive? For myself, I can say I am happier, healthier, and even wealthier by moving to a community in which I feel at home. 

Rachel: You have found an ideal setup! What has been the biggest change you have witnessed since you moved to Okutama about 5 years ago?

David: Several entrepreneurial enterprises (e.g. Mountscape, Jellyfish, and Sakura Hotels) have taken advantage of the region’s opportunities. Also, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is showing more interest in promoting Okutama as the 2020 Olympics approaches.

Rachel: Personally, what has been your most memorable experience since your move to Okutama?

David: That’s a very hard question because something special happens on almost a daily basis. My work with mentally handicapped people at Tokyo Tamagakuen has provided many wonderful experiences. Overall, I think the feeling of being at home is the most rewarding.

Rachel: Let’s talk about your involvement with Tama Gakuen(多摩学園), a school that provides special needs education for the disabled. How did you start volunteering with this facility?

David: Tama Gakuen is more of a care institution than a school. I work there as a part-time employee, not as a volunteer. I became involved because I was curious. The model is based on Coco’s Farm and is quite unusual. The basic idea is that living close to nature and physical work is good for people with severe handicaps (adults with mental age averaging 3-4 years, very limited cognitive and social skills, plus associated physical problems). They can do basic tasks. The tasks relate mainly to agricultural production – shiitake, turmeric, and other vegetables. What Tama Gakuen accomplishes is a calming environment and routine that includes a sense of value and the continual building of relationships between residents (we call them students), carers, support staff, and part-timers such as myself.

Rachel: What do you see as the major opportunities in Japan? How about misperceptions?

David: My time in Japan is about half of the past four decades. The great advantage of Japan is social cohesion. Cooperation is always the first option, not second or third, or last. It’s not the only option, but it’s a very quiet first.

The one misperception that I encounter is that it must have been difficult for me to fit into a local village community. By contrast, the pull was irresistible.

Rachel: That is very interesting because I can imagine that most people would ask you about how being an Aussie has impacted your experience in a traditional Japanese industry and community. Would you say that your Australian background has affected your approach to wasabi farming and/or to propose innovative solutions?

David: As an Australian, I come from a multicultural background. In a mono-cultural society, I must be different to make a difference. As a journalist, I’m always the one with the questions. As a newcomer, everything is exciting for me. I see things in a different way from what local people are accustomed to. I question things that don’t make sense. Having said that, I have learned that nothing happens here just because it makes sense. Relationships are the key ingredient. Once relationships are formed, things that make sense can begin to happen.

Rachel: Speaking of relationships, who is your greatest inspiration and why?

David: My wife, without a doubt, and I’m bypassing some great inspirations in my life to say that. We very actively share most aspects of our lives; including wasabi-related projects, neighborhood responsibilities, our vegetable garden, and participating in local volunteer guide activities.

Rachel: It is a beautiful thing to have a partner to share life’s moments with. What is your next goal?

David: Priority one is my Japanese. Besides that, just about every night I share a toast with my wife. It goes: “Kampai! Another productive day! We gotta stop making things happen!” The next day the sun comes up and new things start to happen.

It’s the relationships.

Final Thoughts

I learned a lot about wasabi growing and Okutama’s appeal from David’s unique and insightful perspective. However, there is a looming concern about the lack of interest in wasabi growing from younger generations. Existing wasabi growers are getting older, and modern Japan is faced with the reality that their expertise in cultivating this cherished plant will soon be lost. For example, one of Okutama’s wasabi growers with the largest production volume (over 50,000 plants per year) is already in his 80s and has no one to take over. Deeply knowledgeable about wasabi, this farmer ensures that every single bit of his plants is used somehow, but his fields may soon fall into disuse with his retirement, further exacerbating the shortage of wasabi. This problem of aging farmers is consistent with the current state of Japan’s agricultural industry as a whole, as I most recently experienced during my visit to Fukushima to learn about the prefecture’s food value chain (read about my visit to “Yoshinoya Farm Fukushima” and “Asahi Brewery Fukushima”).

Perhaps the biggest obstacle facing wasabi growers is marketing. At the moment, wasabi growing is very hard work, but the low wholesale prices that farmers get compensated for are nothing close to what consumers have to pay. Farmers are in financially vulnerable positions when they are unable to market directly to the end consumers. Unfortunately, there is not much information or public awareness about this matter. Perhaps applying “farm-to-table” and e-commerce business solutions would make the industry more lucrative by empowering wasabi growers with access to a bigger share of the market. Especially given that Okutama is so close to Tokyo, it might be the best place to start various initiatives that would boost the local industry. Making the wasabi industry more efficient would naturally also generate greater appeal and more opportunities for younger farmers to become wasabi growers. We can already see the beginning of the shift to online markets, as consumers take initiative to buy fresh wasabi at better prices by searching online and ordering directly from the farms. 

David’s passion to support the revitalization of Okutama is truly inspiring and opportune. His pursuit of new projects such as initiating a wasabi seedling program or starting an e-commerce website and ideas for boosting the region’s forestry industry reflects critical changes in a traditional community. We should all look forward to his future contributions!
