Embarking on the journey to film the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour in Gokayama was not merely a professional endeavor; it was a deeply personal and enriching experience that left an indelible mark on me as SeiRogai achieved this new milestone. The collaboration with Nanto City was our first VR Tour production outside of the Tokyo metropolitan area, and in the middle of the Japanese Alps no less.

私にとって非常に個人的で豊かな経験であり、
SeiRogaiがこの新しいマイルストーンを達成する事で、
忘れがたい印象を残しました。

初のVRツアー制作であり、日本アルプスの中心地で行われました。

We launched our VR Tour production and digital platform, Global Virtual Travel, as a new business to address the inequity of travel and challenges of regional revitalization in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to create new content using VR360 to showcase stories of local areas across Japan that are not well known nor necessarily easily accessible but would greatly benefit from increased awareness and inbound tourism for the local economy. Through the Nanto City VR360 Virtual Tour project, we gained many new insights into the potential power and influence that our project can have not only for international audiences but also improving and supporting local communities.

私たちは、COVID-19パンデミックの中での旅行の不平等や
地域振興の課題に対処するための新規事業として、
VRツアー制作とDX観光プラットフォーム「Global Virtual Travel」を立ち上げました。
私たちは、VR360を使った新しいコンテンツを制作し、
日本全国であまり知られておらず、必ずしも簡単にアクセスできないけれど、
認知度の向上やインバウンド観光によって地域経済に大きな恩恵をもたらす地域の
ストーリーを紹介したいと考えました。

As with any startup, entrepreneurs typically have to wear multiple hats. Whereas Samuel was leading while also taking on many different specialist roles on the production team, I had to both drive the business operations and logistics while also appearing on camera. This was perhaps the most challenging aspect of this project. As it was outside of Tokyo and filmed in remote villages, we could only take a small crew with us, and everybody had to conduct multiple roles simultaneously. It was truly an exercise in multitasking, flexibility, and adapting to challenging situations.

Stepping into History

From the moment I set foot in the World Heritage villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, I knew this would be a journey unlike any other. Surrounded by centuries-old gassho-zukuri houses and the majestic natural beauty of Gokayama, I felt transported back in time. The villages of Gokayama in Nanto City of Toyama Prefecture, unlike the neighboring Shirakawa-Go in Gifu Prefecture, are known for retaining their authenticity as “time slip” destinations. When visiting Gokayama, you truly feel like you have slipped back in time, as not only are the gassho-zukuri houses centuries-old, but also the local residents have proudly preserved their traditional way of life.

五箇山を訪れると、合掌造り家屋が数世紀前からのものであるだけでなく
地元の人たちが伝統的な生活様式を誇り高く維持しているため、
まるでタイムスリップしたかのような感覚を味わうことができるのです。

As the presenter of the Nanto City VR Tour, my role was to guide viewers through the enchanting landscapes and cultural landmarks of Nanto City and also provide opportunities for interactions with the local residents. Every frame was meticulously crafted to create an immersive experience that would leave a lasting impression on our audience. From the tranquil rice fields and bed & breakfast stays in a traditional gassho-tsukuri house with the local villagers, to the mesmerizing kokiriko folk song and dance and flavorful local cuisine, we wanted viewers to feel as if they were truly there and exploring with me in Gokayama, experiencing it all firsthand.

地元の住民との交流の機会を視聴者に提供することでした。
視聴者の印象に残るような没入感のある体験を提供するため、

魅惑的な心子（こきりこ）民謡や踊り、風味豊かな郷土料理など、

From unpredictable weather to logistical hurdles, there were moments when we wondered if we would be able to successfully capture the magic of the Gokayama region. But with the support of our dedicated team and the warm hospitality of the local community, we overcame every obstacle and emerged stronger than ever.

I hope that everyone had a restful and joyful start to the new year.

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to try the new normal trend of “Working From Anywhere” (WFA) that has been accelerated due to the COVID pandemic. Hence, I recently completed a 2-month trial of teleworking in Toyama Prefecture!

It was a novel experience for me to telework in new stimulating environments and have the opportunity to immerse myself in local sights, culture, and food during breaks and after work. In this article, I will share some of what I learned about the cities I visited in Toyama prefecture. From the two largest cities of Toyama City and Takaoka City, to coastal towns of Himi, Uozu, and Kurobe, and the mountains of Nanto City, each had their inimitable charms.

皆様には、心休まる楽しい新年をお迎えになられたことと思います。

私の新年の抱負のひとつは、COVIDの大流行で加速した「WFA（Working From Anywhere）」という新常識に挑戦することです。というわけで、先日、富山県で2ヶ月間のテレワークトライアルを終えました!

新しい刺激的な環境でテレワークを行い、休憩時間や終業後にその土地の観光地や文化、食に浸ることができたのは、私にとって斬新な体験でした。今回の記事では、富山県で訪れた都市について学んだことを紹介します。富山市、高岡市という二大都市から、氷見市、魚津市、黒部市といった沿岸部、南砺市の山間部まで、それぞれに独特の魅力がありました。

Teleworking Trends in Japan

Around the globe, many have transitioned to “Working From Home” (WFH) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Despite promotion by the government in recent years, the utilization rate of telework had remained low in Japan. However, perhaps one silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic is the Japanese government’s“stay home” policy response that strongly encouraged companies to adopt teleworking. The working environment for many people in Japan has changed dramatically since, with surveys indicating that the overwhelming majority of employees believe that telework and digital conferencing are here to stay. 

As teleworking becomes more widespread, the popularity of “テレワーク移住” (terewaku ijyu) – the trend of people moving to the Japanese countryside while teleworking – has risen dramatically. Luckily for me, as I am placed firmly in the services industry (including media production, marketing, and business consulting at SeiRogai), most of my work is suitable for working remotely.

For a city girl such as myself, visits to the countryside with abundant nature are always appealing for short getaways from the hectic metropolis. The pandemic has only made the impulse to escape to more pastoral environments more urgent. Japan has 47 prefectures, all with their own heritage culture and a multitude of natural attractions that I have yet to discover. However, the idea of moving full time to the inaka (Japanese countryside) is – I will admit – quite daunting. Without first visiting and experiencing it in person, I would be hesitant to simply pick up and move for a longer-term stay, even on my most adventurous days. There is limited information available about the living environment and accessibility of necessary infrastructure that we often take for granted in a city. For example, the reliability of high-speed wifi would be a key requirement for effective teleworking and comfortable residential stays. Luckily, many prefectures around Japan have been promoting their co-working and teleworking facilities, so I took the opportunity to try living in Toyama!

日本におけるテレワークの動向

コロナ禍により、世界中で多くの人が「在宅勤務」（“Working From Home”）に移行しています。 日本では近年、政府によるテレワークの推進が行われていますが、その利用率は低いままでした。しかし、COVID-19の大流行がもたらした一つの光明は、日本政府の「在宅勤務」政策により、企業にテレワークの導入が強く奨励されたことでしょう。その後、日本では多くの人の働く環境が大きく変わり、テレワークやデジタル会議が今後も主流になると考える社員が圧倒的に多いという調査結果も出ています。

テレワークの普及に伴い、「テレワーク移住」が注目されています。日本の田舎に移住してテレワークをするトレンドが急増しています。幸いなことに、私はサービス業（株式会社SeiRogaiでのメディア制作・マーケティング・経営コンサルティングなど）に身を置いているので、ほとんどの仕事がリモートワークに向いています。

都会育ちの私にとって、慌ただしい都会から少し離れたところにある自然豊かな田舎での滞在は、興味深いものがあり、今のコロナ禍の中で、さらに魅力的ですよね。日本には47の都道府県があり、それぞれに伝統文化や自然の魅力がありますが、私はまだ発見したことがありません。しかし、田舎に移り住むというのは、正直なところ、かなり勇気のいることです。実際に訪れて体験してみないと、いくら冒険好きな私でも長期滞在は躊躇してしまいます。都会では当たり前の生活環境や必要なインフラが整っているかどうかも、限られた情報しかありません。例えば、高速無線LANの信頼性は、効率的なテレワークや快適な住居滞在のための重要な要件です。幸いなことに、日本中の多くの県がコワーキングやテレワークの施設を推進しているので、この機会に富山に住んでみることにしました!

Learn Key Japanese Vocabulary Related to Teleworking!

• コロナ禍 (Korona-ka)- the coronavirus crisis. Often used to refer to the general state of being in a pandemic or the impact of COVID-19 on society.
• ステイホーム (Suteihōmu) or巣ごもり(Sugomori) ­– common phrases used to refer to Japan’s government’s “Stay Home” policy compelling everyone to stay at home and refrain from going outside.  Sugomori literally translates to “nesting”, “hibernation” or “shutting oneself at home”
• テレワーク移住 (Terewāku ijū) or リモートワーク移住 (Rimōtowāku ijū) – literally translating to “Telework Migration” or “Remote Work Migration”, these terms refer to the trend of more people migrating or moving to the 田舎 (Inaka) and 地方　（Chihō）  – countryside and rural prefectures –  to live as they are now able to work remotely and do not need to commute to the office as often. 

About Toyama Prefecture

“Toyama” 富山 literally means “rich with mountains” – and the prefecture certainly lives up to its name! Toyama offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks known as the Northern Japan Alps, Japan’s answer to the French Alps. Located on the picturesque Japan Sea, the Hokuriku Shinkansen stops at 3 stations across Toyama Prefecture (Kurobe-Unazaki Onsen, Toyama, and Shin-Takaoka, just before arriving at Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture), all only about 250km Northwest and 2 hours from Tokyo. The Hokuriku Shinkansen was only opened in 2017 and is still relatively new, but the direct access to different locations in Toyama Prefecture made it surprisingly convenient.

富山県は「山が豊富な県」という意味で、その名の通りです。富山県には、北アルプスと呼ばれる雪をかぶった山々の絶景があります。北陸新幹線は富山県の3駅（黒部・宇奈月温泉、富山、新高岡、石川県金沢市）に停車し、東京から北西に約250km、約2時間で行くことができます。北陸新幹線は2017年に開業したばかりで、まだ比較的新しいですが、富山県内各地への直通アクセスは意外と便利です。

Toyama City <富山市>

Historically, Toyama was a powerful castle town. Today, the prefecture’s capital city remains the center of Japan’s pharmaceutical industry and is home to the most substantial number of active glassworkers in the country. The city offers a gateway to the past with its Folk Craft Village富山市民俗民芸村 and traditional 19^th-century wooden buildings. Toyama is a delightful combination of some of the most famous sashimi and sushi in Japan (especially renown for shiro-ebi, a type of white shrimp found only in Toyama Bay), award-winning pure water, and spectacular nature! 

During my breaks and evenings, I enjoyed exploring the history and culture of Toyama City while feasting on delicious local cuisine and seafood! Toyama Bay is Japan’s deepest bay with a max. depth of over 1200m, which results in an abundance of marine life. It is said that out of the 800 total species found in the Sea of Japan, 500 can be found in Toyama Bay!

富山は歴史的に有力な城下町です。現在も日本の薬業の中心地であり、全国で最も多くのガラス工芸家が活躍している県庁所在地です。また、富山市民俗民芸村や19世紀の伝統的な木造建築物など、過去へのゲートウェイとしての役割も担っています。富山は、日本有数の刺身と寿司（特に富山湾産のシロエビ）、受賞歴のある清流、そして壮大な自然が魅力的な場所です。

休憩時間や夜には、富山市の歴史や文化に触れながら、おいしい郷土料理や海の幸を堪能しました。富山湾は日本一深い湾で、最大水深1200mを超えるため、海の生物が豊富に生息しています。日本海に生息する800種のうち、500種が富山湾に生息していると言われています。

I was very fortunate that a friend, Imai-san, Chairman of Fuji Pharmaceuticals in Toyama City, kindly guided me to some amazing local restaurants and sights. He also told me more about the history of Toyama since the Edo Period (1603-1868), when the city developed as the center for medicine distributed throughout Japan, Interestingly, I learned that Toyama’s famous glass industry likely had its beginnings in medicine bottle production.

幸運なことに、富山市の友達、富士製薬工業株式会社の代表取締役会長　今井さんが、地元の素晴らしいレストランや観光スポットを案内してくださいました。富山の有名なガラス産業は、薬瓶の製造から始まった可能性が高いことも初めて知りました。

I would argue that Toyama city is also the center of fresh food and creative cuisine in Japan. Of the 20 Michelin-starred restaurants in Toyama Prefecture, the majority of them are in the capital city. We had the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful lunch at one-starred Cave Yunoki in a reformed Iwasemachi storehouse. Chef Yunoki crafts memorable fusion French dishes that highlight the flavors of local bounty, all served on tableware made by resident glassmakers and potters. 

Although less well known than nearby Kanazawa, many locals enjoy the spaciousness of Toyama city, where they can live in comfort while being only a short drive away from ski resorts and hiking in the Japanese Alps.

富山市は、日本における生鮮食品と創作料理の中心地でもあると言えるでしょう。富山県にある20軒のミシュラン星付きレストランのうち、その大半は県庁所在地にあります。岩瀬町の蔵を改装した一つ星の「カーヴ・ユノキ」で、素晴らしいランチを楽しむ機会がありました。柚木シェフは、地元の食材を生かしたフュージョン・フレンチを考案し、地元のガラス職人や陶芸家が作った食器で提供しています。

金沢に比べると知名度は低いですが、富山市は広々としていて、スキー場や北アルプスのハイキングにも近く、快適に暮らすことができるため、多くの地元の人に愛されています。

Nanto City <南砺市>

Arriving in the mountainous Nanto City at the Johana JR station, I was surprised at the variety of brochures promoting the city – they all featured different areas of Nanto as if they were completely distinct cities! Nanto City comprises of 6 main areas: the Gokayama Area 五箇山, 城端　Johana Area, 福光　Fukumitsu Area, 福野　Fukuno Area, 井口　Inokuchi Area, 井波　Inami Area, and 利賀　Toga Area. Until 2004, they were all independent towns and hence developed very different cultures.

JR城端駅に到着し、南砺市を紹介するパンフレットの種類の多さに驚きました。南砺市は、五箇山エリア、城端エリア、福光エリア、福野エリア、井口エリア、井波エリア、利賀エリアの大きく6つのエリアから構成されています。2004年まではそれぞれ独立した町であったため、全く異なる文化を育んできました。

Fukumitsu Area 福光

Fukumitsu is perhaps most well-known for its strong ties to folk art, but my personal highlight was visiting the Ishikuro Tanekouji-ten along its shopping street. 

The Ishikuro Tanekouji-ten is a Koji-ya (maker of Japanese malted rice) with over 130 years of history. It is the only Koji-ya in the Hokuriku region, and 1 of 10 left in Japan who specializes in the process. Koji is prepared by adding koji mold to steamed grains (rice, barley, soybeans, etc.). It is then carefully cultured in warm, humid conditions that promote propagation. Koji mold has been named the “national mold” of Japan due to its essential role in basic seasonings such as soy sauce and miso.  

福光といえば民芸品が有名ですが、個人的には商店街にある「石黒種麹」を訪ねたのが一番印象が強い経験でした。

石黒種麹店は、130年以上の歴史を持つ麹屋です。北陸地方で唯一の麹屋であり、日本に10軒ほどしかない麹の専門店です。麹は、蒸した穀物（米、麦、大豆など）に麹菌を加えて仕込みます。その後、繁殖を促す温暖で湿度の高い環境でじっくりと培養します。麹菌は、醤油や味噌などの基礎調味料に欠かせないことから、日本の「国菌」とも呼ばれています。 

Inami Area 井波

Nanto is also well known for the Inami woodcarving town, which is believed to have been practicing the craft since 1390 C.E.! Numerous wood carving studios line the atmospheric stone-paved streets of Yokamachi-dori street. Wood carvings can be found all over, from phone booths to bus stops, filling the town with a rustic ambience and the clack of wooden mallets.

南砺市は、1390年から木彫りを始めたとされる井波彫刻の町としても知られています。石畳の風情ある八日町通りには、数多くの木彫り工房が軒を連ねています。電話ボックスやバス停など、いたるところに木彫像があり、木槌の音が響く素朴な雰囲気の街です。

 

Johana Area 城端

We were lucky to enjoy delicious food near Lake Sakuragaike, which is also where the co-working facility, Sakura Crea (see above section on “Where I Teleworked”) is located.

We enjoyed dinner with the Nanto City Mayor Mikio Tanaka at L’ensoleiller, a one-starred Michelin restaurant at the edge of the lake. The restaurant practices the theme of “local production for local consumption” and uses many local vegetables grown by local farmers combined with wild vegetables and seafood to create beautifully plated dishes.

コワーキング施設「桜クレエ」（上記「私がテレワークを行った場所」参照）がある桜ヶ池の近くで、美味しいものを堪能できたのはラッキーでした。

南砺市の田中幹夫市長と、湖畔にあるミシュラン1つ星のレストラン「ランソレイエ」で夕食を楽しみました。同店は「地産地消」をテーマに、地元農家の野菜をふんだんに使い、山菜や魚介類と組み合わせた美しい料理を提供しています。

Mayor Tanaka also introduced us to a local sushi restaurant that had been operated by a lovely couple for over 47 years! Nanto is conveniently situated within 1 hour from both Kanazawa and Himi where a lot of fresh seafood is caught, and so has great sushi along with the typical meats and vegetables of mountainous areas. It was my first time to try squid ink sushi!

田中市長は、素敵なご夫婦が47年以上経営されている地元のお寿司屋さんを紹介してくださいました。南砺市は金沢や氷見から1時間以内で行ける便利な場所にあり、新鮮な魚介類がたくさん獲れるため、山間部特有の肉や野菜と一緒に美味しいお寿司を食べることができます。イカ墨寿司は初めて食べました！

Takaoka City <高岡市>

Takaoka (高岡) is the second-largest city in Toyama Prefecture. It is historically known as a center of metal casting, and this industry still thrives in the city today. I was very impressed with my visit to the artistic Nousaku factory grounds, which also has a gallery, small store, and workshop. I came home with several beautifully crafted products for tableware and interior décor.

高岡市は、富山県で2番目に大きな都市です。歴史的に鋳物の町として知られ、現在もその産業が盛んです。私は、ギャラリーや小さな店、工房もある芸術的な「能作」の工場敷地を訪れて、とても感動しました。私は、食器やインテリアのための美しく細工された製品をいくつか手に入れ、帰宅しました。

Himi City <氷見市>

Just a 20-minute drive or 30-minute train ride from Takaoka is Himi City, famous for its fresh fish, especially buri (yellowtail) in the winter! Although I have had buri many times in Tokyo, I never knew that the fish would taste so different fresh. Moreover, it was the first time we tried buri toro (the fattiest part of the yellowtail) and buri shabu-shabu, which was absolutely delicious!

高岡から車で20分、電車で30分のところにある氷見市は、新鮮な魚、特に冬はブリで有名です。東京で何度もブリを食べたことがありますが、新鮮なブリがこんなに違うとは知りませんでした。しかも、ブリのトロもブリのしゃぶしゃぶも初めて食べましたが、本当に美味しかったです。

Uozu City <魚津市>

Toyama prefecture is surrounded in all directions by the ocean and mountain ranges, but Uozu City is where I experienced it the closest. From the 3,000-meter Japanese Alps, including the famous Tateyama Mountain Range, all the way down to the 1,000-meter depths of Toyama Bay, the steep grade of Toyama’s dynamic terrain is unrivaled around the world. It was truly a marvel to see the expanse of the sea on my left, and the imposing heights of mountains on my right in such close proximity.

富山県は四方を海と山脈に囲まれており、私がそれを最も近くで感じたのは魚津市です。有名な立山連峰をはじめとする標高3,000mの日本アルプスから、水深1,000mの富山湾まで、富山のダイナミックな地形の急勾配は、世界でも類を見ないほどです。左手には海が広がり、右手には堂々とした山々が連なり、まさに驚嘆に値します。

The Uozu City Mayor Akira Muratsubaki was kind enough to show me around and tell me more about the city. Uozu has been known as the city of mirages since the Edo period. Although I could not see any during my stay in Uozu, they apparently appear from March to June as the result of a natural phenomenon where cool and warm air mix to create a mirage in the water visible in the spring.

魚津市の村椿晃市長の案内で、魚津のことを詳しく教えていただきました。魚津は江戸時代から蜃気楼の街として知られています。魚津滞在中には見ることができませんでしたが、春になると沖に現れ、水面に冷たい空気と暖かい空気が混ざり合い、蜃気楼を作り出す自然現象の結果として３月～６月にかけて現れるらしいです。

Less Stress with a Relaxed Lifestyle in the Countryside

Since the onset of the pandemic, I have been working remotely at a variety of locations in Tokyo – from my living room, to co-working spaces, to cafes and restaurants. However, although a good internet connection is easy to find, mental stress and fatigue build up when you are constantly working under artificial lighting and limited space.

I greatly enjoyed this first opportunity to have a 2-month trial telework experience in Toyama. It was a lot more fruitful and productive than I had initially expected. All of the co-working spaces I used were spacious and relatively empty. More importantly, it was nice to be able to enjoy being in nature and fill up on delicious seafood during breaks and after work. The slower and simpler way of life in the countryside was a nice breath of fresh air after hectic days of meetings, conference calls, or solitary work on the laptop.

I had heard a lot (mostly warnings) about the heavy snowfall in Toyama and was a little worried about staying there during the winter. However, the local city and prefecture governments take snow removal very seriously and I was impressed by how effectively many public roads are cleared (sometimes even 24 hours a day!). Although it takes some getting used to, it was not as difficult to walk or drive in the snow as I initially thought – and the winter scenery is beautiful!

ストレスの少ない、のんびりした田舎暮らし。

パンデミック発生以来、私は自宅のリビング、コワーキングスペース、カフェやレストランなど、都内のさまざまな場所でリモートワークを行っています。しかし、インターネット環境は簡単に手に入るものの、人工照明や限られたスペースで常に作業をしていると、精神的なストレスや疲労が蓄積していきます。

富山で2ヶ月間のお試しテレワーク移住体験をする初めての機会は、とても楽しかったです。当初予想していたよりもずっと実り多く、生産的でした。利用したコワーキングスペースはどこも広々としていて、比較的空いていました。そして何より、休憩時間や仕事帰りに自然の中で美味しい海の幸をお腹いっぱい食べることができたのが何よりでした。会議や電話、パソコンでの孤独な作業で慌ただしい日々を過ごしていると、田舎のゆっくりとしたシンプルな暮らしぶりが新鮮に感じられました。

富山は大雪地帯だと（主に警告）よく聞いていたので、冬に滞在するのは少し心配だったのですが、地元の自治体は除雪に非常に真剣に取り組んでおり、多くの公道が効率的に除雪されていることに感心しました。（時には24時間除雪されていることも！）慣れるまで大変ですが、雪の中を歩いたり運転したりするのは、最初に思っていたほど難しくありません。

Friendly Local Residents and City Government Support

The opportunity to meet with local government representatives who showed us around their cities was invaluable. We obtained useful information about how to begin looking for available lands or real estate such as 空き家 (akiyas – vacant or abandoned homes) that may be suitable for longer-term stays or for the establishment of a satellite office. I was very surprised at how friendly everyone was and how well they received us. TIP: I would highly encourage anyone interested in spending some time in Toyama to reach out to the city hall, especially the departments in charge of attracting new residents.

At the time of writing, I was informed of various policies and incentives to attract people to move to　Toyama, such as up to 1 million yen (about $10,000 USD) per family and 600,000 yen (around USD$6000) (about USD$10,000) per family in cash payments if one moves to Toyama from Tokyo!

It was insightful to meet with the locals in every city we visited to understand more about the local environment and economy, demographics, and tourism. Although Toyama Prefecture is not that large compared to other prefectures in Japan, I was surprised to discover so much diversity across industrial to mountainous to coastal towns. It was heartwarming to get a glimpse into the lives of residents, and better understand their hometowns from local perspectives.

地域住民の方々の親しみやすさと市役所のサポート

地方自治体の担当者に会い、街を案内していただいたことは貴重な体験でした。長期滞在やサテライトオフィス設立に適した空き家などの土地や不動産を探す方法について、有益な情報を得ることができました。また、このような場所には、長期滞在やサテライトオフィスの設置に適した空き家もあります。富山での滞在に興味がある方は、ぜひ市役所、特に誘致担当部署にコンタクトをとってみてください。

この記事を書いている時点では、東京から富山に移住すると1世帯あたり最大100万円の移住支援金を支給するなど、さまざまな移住誘致の政策やインセンティブがあると聞いています！

訪問したすべての土地で地元の人々と会い、地域の環境と経済、人口統計、観光について理解を深めたことは、洞察に満ちたものでした。富山県は日本の他の都道府県と比べるとそれほど大きくはありませんが、工業地帯、山間部、海岸沿いの町など、実に多様であることに驚かされました。住民の方々の生活を垣間見ることができ、地元の視点から故郷をより深く理解することができ、心温まる思いがしました。

Infrastructure and Services for the Younger Population

As I consider moving to the Japanese countryside, one factor that would be important for me is the opportunity to socialize and network with more locals, especially (younger) working professionals. Unfortunately, most rural prefectures in Japan are facing the social issue of a decreasing and aging population, and Toyama is no exception. It would be helpful to gain a better understanding of the kinds of services or support provided to younger families and working professionals for them to find moving to the countryside attractive.  

In some areas that we were in, especially up in the mountains and outside of the cities, the wifi access could get a bit problematic. Although it was fine for regular work such as email access and online meetings, it may be a bigger problem for those working in tech-related fields that need to download and transmit large volumes of data and use cloud services. 

若年層向けインフラ・その他サービス

日本の田舎への移住を考えている私にとって、より多くの地元の人々、特に（若い）社会人と交流し、ネットワークを作る機会があることは、重要な要素の一つであります。残念ながら、日本のほとんどの地方県は人口減少と高齢化という社会問題に直面しており、富山県も例外ではありません。若い社会人やその家族が地方への移住を魅力的に感じるためには、どのようなサービスやサポートが提供されているのか、より深く理解することができればと思います。

私たちが滞在したいくつかの地域、特に山間部や都市部以外では、無線LANアクセスに少し問題が生じることがありました。メールアクセスやオンラインミーティングなどの通常業務では問題なかったのですが、大容量データのダウンロードや転送、クラウドサービスの利用が必要な技術系の仕事をされている方には大きな問題かもしれません。

Convenient Access from Tokyo

Ultimately, access to Toyama was surprisingly easy, and I can understand the convenience of people staying in the prefecture while teleworking and making trips to their company offices or business meetings in Tokyo when necessary. It would even be possible to do day trips to Tokyo due to the convenient and direct Shinkansen access. However, living in and getting around various parts of Toyama itself would be a bit inconvenient without a car (and understanding Japanese), which is a common issue for all areas of the Japanese countryside. However, as long as you have a car, I have no doubt Toyama can be a comfortable and beautiful place to live and telework!

東京からの便利なアクセス

最後に、富山へのアクセスは意外と簡単で、県内に滞在しながらテレワークを行い、必要に応じて東京の社屋や商談に出向くという利便性は理解できます。新幹線も直通で便利なので、日帰りで東京に行くことも可能でしょう。しかし、富山県での生活や県内各地への移動は、車（と日本語）がないと少し不便です。これは、日本の田舎に共通する問題だと思います。でも、車さえあれば、富山はテレワークをするのに快適で美しい場所であることは間違いありません。

The Harvard Prize Book in Japan during COVID　

コロナ禍の日本のハーバードプライズブック

Since I moved to Japan in 2017, I have presented the annual Harvard Prize Book on behalf of the Harvard Club at various high schools in Japan. The awards ceremony is typically held at the end of the school year between March to June. Last year, with the onset of the global pandemic, it was not possible to hold in-person ceremonies as non-essential businesses were shut down, and people were urged to stay home and socially distance to slow the spread of the then-novel coronavirus. Although many schools had to cancel their ceremonies, I was glad to be still able to speak to the 2019 winner of Junten High School, Miss Yoshino Kanauchi (金内佳乃). 

2017年に日本に移住して以来、私はハーバードクラブを代表して、毎年日本の様々な高校で「Harvard Prize Book」を贈呈しています。授賞式は通常、3月から6月の学年末に行われます。昨年は、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の防止により、自宅待機や社会的な距離を置くことが求められたため、授賞式は取り止めになりました。多くの学校が式典を中止しましたが、2019年度の受賞者である順天高等学校の金内佳乃さんにオンラインでお話しができてよかったです。

This year is the first time the Harvard Prize Book Awards were presented virtually, and I was humbled to contribute to the ceremony as the Alumni Awards Presenter for Japan.

From March to June 2021, I prepared a speech addressed to the high school students screened at the awards ceremonies, and met virtually with some of the winners to discuss their interests, ambitions, and dreams.

今年はハーバード・プライズ・ブック賞が初めてバーチャルで授与され、私は日本の同窓賞プレゼンターとして式典に貢献できたことを光栄に思います。

Harvard Prize Books are awarded to outstanding students in the next-to-graduating high school class who display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
 
ハーバードプライズブックの受賞者の皆様、おめでとうございます！
 
ハーバードプライズブックは、色々な分野での優れた成績及び高い徳性を備えた人間性を表す、高校２年生の極めて優秀な学生に授与されます。
 
As someone who has achieved success in many different areas, you should be proud of yourself. I hope that you will consider the opportunities at Harvard and studying liberal arts. 
 
多くの異なる分野で成功を収めた人として、皆さんは自分自身を誇りに思うべきです。 ハーバード大学を経験する機会やリベラルアーツの勉強をぜひ検討してください。
 
2020 was a difficult year for many of us. The impact of the coronavirus makes it tough to plan for an uncertain future. 
 
2020年は私たちの多くにとって大変な年でした。 コロナウイルスの影響により、不確実な将来を計画することは困難です。
 
When I graduated high school and was considering being the first in my family to go to college, it was in 2008 and during the global financial crisis at that time. It was not the best year for international students to consider going to the U.S., and although I was worried about going so far away from my family and my home to venture to a foreign country alone, I took a chance and applied anyway, thinking I would never get in. 
 
 
私が高校を卒業し、家族の中で初めて大学に進学することを考えていた2008年当時は、世界的な金融危機の最中でした。アメリカに留学することを考えるのに最適な年ではなく、家族や家から遠く離れて思い切って一人で外国に行くことを心配しましたが、とにかくチャンスを掴んで入学申請をしました。けれども、絶対に入学できないと思っていました。
 
However, to my surprise, I received an offer and pursued a liberal arts education. Although I have faced many challenges since then, I have never regretted it. 
 
 しかし、驚いたことに、私は入学の内定を受け、リベラルアーツ教育を追求しました。 それ以来、多くの課題に直面してきましたが、後悔したことは一度もありません。
 
I cannot imagine what it is like to be in high school during this covid pandemic - perhaps many of you will feel insecure about the future, intimidated by expectations and fearful of the unknown. I am telling you this because, even now, I sometimes feel the same way. 
 
 この激しいコロナ禍の中での高校生活というのはどういうものか想像できません。おそらく多くの皆さんは、期待する・されることに怯え、未知のものを恐れ、将来について不安を感じるでしょう。私が皆さんにこのことを伝えるのは、私は今でも同じように感じることがあるからです。
 
Throughout history, uncertainty and global crises have happened before, and might happen again in the future. COVID will also come to pass. 
歴史を通して、不確実性と世界的な危機は以前にも起こったことがあり、将来に再び起こるかもしれません。 COVIDも収束するでしょう。
 
When it does, YOU are the generation that will be leading our future in the post-COVID new normal. Stay positive – you are not alone.
 
 その時は、皆さんはCOVID後のニューノーマルにおいて私達の未来をリードする世代です。ポジティブであり続けてください。皆さんは一人ではありません。
 
I can understand it must be confusing for any of you to consider studying overseas when so many travel restrictions are in place. Nonetheless, I have always believed that with great challenges comes great opportunities. 

 非常に多くの旅行制限が課せられているときに、留学を検討することは、皆さんにとって混乱を招くに違いないことを理解できます。それでもなお、私は常に大きな挑戦には大きなチャンスが来ると信じてきました。
 
In fact, the best time to try new things is during times like this when nobody can tell what the future will be. So, even if you try something really crazy and it fails, everything is changing anyway, and there really is no right or wrong! 
 
 事実、新しいことに挑戦するのに最適な時期は、このように未来がどうなるか誰にもわからない時期です。 だから、皆さんが本当にクレイジーなことを試みて失敗したとしても、とにかくすべてが変化していているので、本当に何が正しいのか何が悪いのかもありません！
 
Take every opportunity to try new things, even if you think they may never succeed. Who knows – it may lead you to discover something you might have thought was impossible before! 
成功しないかもしれないと思っていても、あらゆる機会を利用して新しいことに挑戦してください。 誰にもわからないけれど、それはあなたが以前は不可能だと思っていたかもしれない何かを発見することにつながるかもしれないです！
 
 
Ultimately, this pandemic has made a lot more people reflect on what is truly important. 
I’ve learned, that as people get older, they tend to think back on their younger years to figure out their dreams and life passions. However, by then it is often too late, and they regret having lost precious time. In contrast, you can do it now!  
 
 最終的に、このパンデミックにより、より多くの人々が本当に重要なことについて考えるようになりました。
私は、人々が年をとるにつれて、彼らが自分の夢と人生の情熱を見つけ出すために若い頃を振り返る傾向があることに気づきました。しかし、その時には手遅れになることが多く、貴重な時間を失ったことを後悔しています。 それとは対照的に、皆さんは今それができます！

Many times, your actions may not have immediate results, but in the long run, you will be amazed to find how important those seemingly insignificant human connections may be.

After the awards ceremony, I had virtual meetings with this year’s winners along with several other promising students from Junten High School, Shibuya Makuhari High School, and Saint Maur International School. I was very impressed by the high level of achievement of these talented young students!

授賞式の後、私は今年の受賞者と、順天高等学校、渋谷幕張高等学校、サンモール国際学校の有望な生徒たちとバーチャルミーティングを行いました。才能豊かな若い学生たちの高いレベルの成果に感銘を受けました！

Junten Junior and Senior High School

Sae lived in the U.S. from the age of 5 to 10. Inspired by “I am Malala,” she developed an interest in education in developing countries. In 2019, she volunteered in Cambodia and also organized a crowdfunding campaign to support education for needy children, raising 100,000 yen in four days. In the future, Sae hopes to study pedagogy in developing countries at Sophia University and study abroad.

紗慧さんは、5歳から10歳までアメリカで過ごした帰国子女です。

「私はマララ」に感銘を受け、途上国の教育支援活動に興味を持ちました。

2019年(高1)に、カンボジア教育支援ボランティアツアーに参加、それ以来継続してカンボジア教育支援活動を続けています。

また、教育支援のためのクラウドファンディングを主催し、4日間で10万円の資金を集め、支援活動に役立てました。

将来は、途上国の教育学を上智大学で学び総合人間科学部の小松太郎教授に指示したいと考えています。在学中に海外留学もして知見を広めたいと考えています。

Jan is a citizen of the Czech Republic who attended elementary school in Prague during Grades 1-4. In 2014, he and his family moved to Yokohama, where they have lived ever since, and he entered Grade 5 at Saint Maur. He quickly adjusted to life in a new environment as well as an unfamiliar language, and he has been an excellent student and an active participant in sports, music, speech, and drama throughout his years here. (Impressively, he speaks Czech, English, Japanese, and Spanish.)

Jan’s academic interests at the university level include European Law, International Law, Politics, and Environmental Issues. He is currently investigating higher education in the European Union (E.U.) and is considering both research universities and liberal arts colleges.

Harvard Alumni originated the Harvard Book Prize Awards Program in 1910 as part of an effort to attract the attention of talented students to the opportunities at the university. Today, more than 1900 Prize Books, sponsored by local Alumni, are awarded in schools worldwide.

As an alumni presenter of the Harvard Book Prize Awards and a member of the Harvard Club of Japan committee, I wish to encourage more students to think broadly about where they apply to college. While admission to Harvard is perceived as very competitive, it does seek out talented students around the world, and I do genuinely believe one will never know their full potential if they do not take risks and try new things, even if it may seem impossible to achieve at the start.

ハーバード大学の同窓生は、1910年に、優秀な学生に大学での様々な機会に目を向けさせるための活動の一環として、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞プログラムを創設しました。現在では、世界中の学校で1900冊以上の本が同窓生によって寄贈されています。

私は、ハーバード・ブック・プライズ賞のプレゼンターとして、また日本ハーバード・クラブの委員として、一人でも多くの学生に志望校を広く考えてもらいたいと思っています。ハーバード大学は競争が激しいと言われていますが、世界中の優秀な学生を求めていますし、たとえ最初は無理だと思っても、リスクを取って新しいことに挑戦しなければ、自分の可能性を最大限に発揮することはできないと私は心から信じています。

In Japan, I have noticed that many students still choose to pursue their college studies domestically in Japan, opting only for a study abroad stint rather than to challenge completing their full B.A. degree at a university abroad. However, such a short study abroad or exchange program, or limiting their consideration of studying overseas to only graduate school, is simply not the same. It cannot replace the experience of studying in a new country during one’s formative college years, as those years have tremendous potential to shape one’s future decisions and opportunities. As someone who has experienced this in my own life personally, I am a firm believer and advocate for students to gain immersive experience and exposure to living in different countries and cultures at a younger age. 

日本では、海外の大学でB.A.を取得するよりも、留学だけして国内で大学生活を送る学生が多いように感じます。しかし、そのような短期留学や交換留学、あるいは海外留学を大学院に限定して考えることは、決して同じではありません。形成期である大学時代に新しい国で勉強するという経験は、その人の将来の意思決定や機会を形成する大きな可能性を持っているため、それに代わるものではありません。私自身がこのような経験をした者として、私は学生が若いうちに異なる国や文化の中で生活する経験を積むべきだと確信し、提唱しています。

It may take some time, but I sincerely wish to see more students from Japan take the leap to pursue a liberal arts education.

Our world has and will continue to be changed forever by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As mentioned in my previous blog article on Jim Rogers’ Investment Advice, in these times of COVID-19, perhaps the most important lesson to keep in mind is that there is a crucial need to recognize and actively adapt to change. In Jim Rogers’ words, “Those who cannot adjust to change will be swept aside by it. Those who recognize change and react accordingly will benefit.”

Those who are still thinking that the world will “return to normal” and the way it was before are the ones who will be swept aside by inevitable change.

This is the first time in recent history that the whole world has been impacted and forced to change. The Chinese characters for “crisis” or 危機, implies that every danger and risk brings with it opportunities. Put another way, As Winston Churchill once said, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”

私たちの世界は、COVID-19パンデミックによって絶えることなく変化し、
そしてこれからも変化し続けます。

前回の「ジム・ロジャーズの投資アドバイス」に関するブログ記事に書いたように、
コロナウイルスの時代において、おそらく心に留めておくべき最も重要な教訓は、
変化を認識し、積極的に変化に適応するということを認めることが必須です。
世界が「今まで通りの日常に戻る」とまだ考えている人々には、
避けられない変化を目の当たりにするでしょう。

ジム・ロジャーズ氏の言葉で、

Nobody knows if our new world will be “better” or “worse” (probably both, in my opinion), but it will certainly be very different. Industries will be disrupted, digital trends will accelerate, whole new markets will be created, new threats and different risks will develop, and new market leaders will rise in our new world. Ultimately, until a vaccine is developed that is proven to be safe and shows promise in protecting against COVID-19, we will have to adapt to living with the virus.

In my latest research article, I discuss what I believe are 11 investment themes that could emerge in the post-COVID era, focusing on developments in Japan. These include my observations of some key trends that will make a lasting impact on how we will live and invest in the future, including a technological focus on enhancing medical care, everyday life, shopping, remote work, the expansion of digital service platforms, contactless travel, and virtual entertainment. Our perspective and investment lens needs to change accordingly to adapt to our “new” Post-COVID world.

Imagine looking out to the coast and seeing nothing in front of you except destroyed buildings and a lone pine tree… After the 2011 tsunami disaster, this was the landscape of reality for residents of Rikuzentakata City.

Rikuzentakata City in Iwate Prefecture was one of the hardest hit places after the 2011 tsunami disaster. All Singaporeans have a special connection to this small city in Iwate as Singapore supported the majority of the city’s rebuilding!

Last year, I visited Rikuzentakata City with the Embassy of Singapore in Tokyo. It felt appropriate to write about it now in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, to give hope about how people can be resilient and rebuild even through the worst of disasters.

Read on to find out my first-hand experience of how Singapore and Rikuzentakata are tied together, and how the city has recovered since March 11, 2011.

High ceilings supported by tasteful timber pillars and majestic floor-to-ceiling windows fanned out in front of me as I stepped into the Singapore Hall of the Rikuzentaka Community Hall.

「シンガポールホール」という陸前高田コミュニティホールに足を踏み入れると、
上品な木柱と床から天井までのとても大きな窓に支えられた高い天井が目の前に広がりました。

陸前高田コミュニティホールは、シンガポール赤十字とシンガポール駐日大使がリード開始した
シンガポールからの寄付金約7億円で建設されました。
陸前高田の住民が津波の後に最も必要としていたことの1つは、人々が集まる場所でした。
彼らは一時的な宿泊施設を建設しましたが、
コミュニティとして永続的に続く場所はまだありませんでした。

You may notice a replica of a pine tree behind me (left of photo), which represents the Miracle Pine Rescue Project of Rikuzentakata. This lone Pine Tree that survived the devastation of the tsunami has been elevated to hero status, symbolizing the strength of the Rikuzentakata community and perhaps of humanity at large to withstand nature’s unpredictable wrath and destruction.

The day of our visit, we were welcomed personally by the Rikuzentakata City Mayor Mr. Futoshi Toba, and Mr Kiyoshi Murakami, Senior Executive Advisor of Rikuzentakata City.

Shy away in a corner, local painter Asuka Tazaki and his guardian stood apart from the crowds. Mayor Toba introduced me to them, and I was grateful to have the opportunity to speak to Asuka-san about his work.

地元の画家田崎飛鳥氏と彼の保護者が皆から離れたところにいました。
戸羽市長が紹介してく下さったで、
彼の作品について話をする機会をいただいたことに感謝しました。

Asuka Tazaki spent months to specially create paintings and sculptures based on his ideas of Singapore. Despite having a development disability, Asuka-san (born in Saitama and raised in Rikuzentakata since middle school) has been passionate about drawing since he was a child, and has won many awards during his career so far.

田崎氏は、シンガポールについて、
彼の独自のアイデアに基づいて絵画や彫刻を特別に制作するのに数ヶ月をかかりました。
発達障害があるにもかかわらず、
田崎さん（埼玉県生まれ、中学以来陸前高田市で育つ）は子供の頃から絵を描くことに情熱を傾けており、

Together with Latvian painter Aigars BIKŠE, Asuka-san created a replica of the Merlion statue using Styrofoam, steel, and acrylic painting. While neither artist has ever visited Singapore, their vibrant interpretation and reproduction of the Merlion statue was so familiar, and yet so excitingly innovative in all its peacock-like colors. In Singapore, we rarely see a multi-colored Merlion (it is almost always a solid color, usually white). This Merlion in Rikuzentakata, on the other hand, looks like it is ready to be part of a Latin American Carnival! How wonderful cross-cultural perspectives are in shining new lights on things other people take for granted.

どちらのアーティストもシンガポールを訪れたことはありませんが、
マーライオン像についての彼のイメージは、鮮やかで、
そして　とても親しみを感じるように再現してくれました。
それは、孔雀のような色で非常に革新的でした。 シンガポールでは、
多色のマーライオンはほとんど見られません（ほとんどの場合、単色で、通常は白です）。
一方、陸前高田のこのマーライオンは、ラテンアメリカのカーニバルに参加する準備ができているようです！
他の人が当たり前のことと思っているものに新しい光を当てるのに、異文化間での違う考え方がいかに大きく素晴らしいことでしょう。

According to Asuka-san, he draws his inspiration from the idea that both Rikuzentakata and Singapore are bound together with a shared history as “lands which have faced wilderness of the ocean since time immemorial.” He hopes to visit Singapore soon.

田崎さんによると、陸前高田とシンガポールはともに
「太古の昔から海の驚異に直面していた土地」としての歴史を共有しているという考えからインスピレーションを得ています。
彼はすぐにシンガポールを訪れることを望んでいます。

After enjoying the exhibit, we were presented with a thoughtful spread of locally made Singaporean cuisine!
展示を楽しんだ後、地元でとれた食材で造ったシンガポール料理で歓待していただきました！

Rikuzentakata’s residents’ warmth and kindness really shone through with their efforts to create Singaporean favorites such as chicken rice and laksa using locally sourced products to welcome us! I was very impressed by how much consideration they had put into these dishes – and they were delicious! 

陸前高田の皆様の温かさと優しさは、
地元産の製品を使ってチキンライスやラクサなどのシンガポールの
私のお気に入り料理を作ろうとして下さる努力の気持が本当に溢れていました！

TSUNAMI MEMORIAL HALL

津波記念館

The Great East Japan Earthquake and 2011 tsunami left Rikuzentaka with over 4000 buildings destroyed, >1600 dead and >200 missing. As someone who has been fortunate enough not to have lived in any disaster zones, every time I learn about how Japanese people have recovered from earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and the like, I never cease to be amazed by their strength and resiliency.

東日本大震災と2011年の津波は陸前高田を襲い、4000以上の建物が破壊され、
1600人以上が死亡、200人以上が行方不明になりました。
私は幸いにも災害地帯に住んだことがないので、日本人が地震、洪水、
津波などからどのように復興したかを知るたびに、彼らの強さと回復力に驚かされます。

Walking out to Memorial Park, the natural scenery is beautiful, but still on the road to recovery after the impact of the tsunami clearing the land.

記念公園を歩いていると、自然の景色は美しく感じられますが、
津波で土地が崩壊後、まだ少し回復の途中です。

Staring out at the coast and the calm waters now, it is hard to imagine how scary it must have been to have an almost 15.1m high wave approaching the land with the speed of a jet plane!

At the Tsunami Memorial Museum next to the Park, we witnessed the damage of the tsunami through displays of damaged equipment, photos of destroyed buildings, and stories of survivors.

公園の隣にある津波記念館では、破損した機器の展示、破壊された建物の写真、
生存者の話を通して津波の被害を目撃しました。

A fire truck was completely crushed under the impact of the tsunami.
消防車は津波の影響で完全に押しつぶされました。

One of the exhibits focused on the teachings of a local Iwate Prefecture idiom, “tendenko,” meaning “each person” or “on your own.” In a place often struck by tsunamis, this idiom has saved many lives and reflects the strong determination pulsating through the people of Rikuzentakata people to survive no matter the tragedies they face.

I left the memorial hall with a heavy heart grieving for those who lost loved ones and their homes. At the same time, I also discovered a profound respect for the unwavering resiliency, courage, and optimism of the Japanese people to uphold “tendenko” yet stand together in difficult times.

With the Tokyo Olympics coming up, many host cities around Japan are preparing to receive athletes from over 200 countries and regions. Rikuzentakata City in Iwate prefecture has been picked as the “host town” for Singapore athletes! I look forward to seeing the relationship between Rikuzentakata and Singapore develop further and hope to do my part to support the city’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.

I first met Linda Rosetti when I arrived at Harvard University as a fresh-eyed graduate student. As my international host, she was the first to welcome me with thoughtful recommendations on nearby places to explore down to detailing the nitty-gritty logistics of moving into my new home in Cambridge, MA.

Our first in-person meeting was at a potluck event. At first, I was very nervous to meet Linda and her daughter. My heart fluttered: What if they did not like me? What would we talk about? What if I did not live up to their expectations? What if we did not get along?

However, Linda and her daughter were very friendly and instantly made me feel comfortable. They later invited me to their house for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I had a conflict of schedule and to this day I regret not joining in on their family festivity!

Linda and I met a few other times during my years at Harvard. Every time we met, she would share about her work on transition and its impact on individuals and organizations, with a focus on the experiences of women. She would listen to my concerns and insightfully advise me on how to turn times of uncertainty into opportunities to build resiliency and redefine success. I had no idea at that time how much her words would be like seeds planted inside me, slowly incubating and taking hold at the necessary times when I was facing my own challenges, whether personal or career-related. I realized later, that the thing with our words to others, is that they tend to become thoughts and then actions. So, it is important we observe them and choose them wisely. As we disperse more “seeds” around the world, many will take root in the lives of others.

私はハーバード大学院在学中の数年間、リンダさんと何回も会いました。
私たちが会う時は、彼女は、女性の経験に焦点を当てながら、
「transition」に関して、仕事、個人や組織等の環境変化の影響について話してくれました。

リンダさんは私の関心事に耳を傾け、

5 years, 3 countries, and several job industry transitions later, Linda and I reconnected.

“Geographic Transitions: Secrets and Strategies” with Rachel Leng

Linda: Hi welcome back this is Linda Rossetti and I am thrilled you’re here for another episode of Destination Unknown. Today we have an extraordinary guest – a colleague and friend Rachel Leng joins me. Part of her resume has things like entrepreneur, Miss Singapore and a graduate of both Duke University and Harvard University. Rachel, it’s nice to have you here, welcome.

Rachel: Thank you Linda for having me on the show. I still remember when we first met, I believe you were my international host who helped me transition when I first arrived at Harvard about 7 years ago. As a Singaporean who had grown up in various countries around Asia – primarily China in Shanghai – and as a first-generation college student in the US it was really meaningful for me to hear about your experiences and work on transition at that time. Since then I’ve been through several other transitions. After graduating, I pursued a job in policy as I was studying international relations and East Asian Studies and had an interest in politics and public policy. So I went to Seoul, South Korea for that job at a political think tank. I was there for about a year and then I moved to Japan just on my own. I didn’t have anything lined up but I had the idea that I wanted to find a job there and learn more about finance and business development… I ended up landing a job in a private equity firm at which I still currently work. Since last year I co-founded my own company in business consultancy and media production with a mission to share knowledge to benefit others. Because, in my own experience it has been media and communication that has helped me along the way and given me the right advice when I needed it. For example, I should mention your blog because I constantly receive your updates and still manage to receive that inspiration and motivation from you and your work.

If I look back, I think moving to Korea was one of my most difficult transitions thus far when I decided to take the job at the think tank in Seoul. Most people were reacting – “Why would you go to Seoul? Why not stay in the US? You can get a perfectly good job here.” After all, I had other job offers for example in Singapore and Hong Kong, (so people would say) “why wouldn’t you go there seems to be a lot more going on there for young ambitious women.” Korea has been consistently ranked lowest or near the lowest on most OECD rankings for gender equality. I just had this desire to really experience it myself and to understand as much about different countries and cultures as possible… but if I look back now I definitely underestimated how difficult it would be to live and work in a country where you have no knowledge of the language or the culture. When I arrived on the ground, everything from just grocery shopping to renting an apartment was really difficult.

The most challenging thing of all I think I faced was the female Asian culture stereotypes. Something like only 2 percent of women in Korea are actually in leadership roles such as on board of directors of companies and women only earn about 60 percent of what men earn generally. There are very strong stereotypes that women should not pursue a career after having a family or have children… In my experience, sexual harassment at the workplace and in society was very common and even expected or accepted by many so that young women around me often did not even recognize it just because it was so entrenched in the cultural views of gender-defined roles. This was difficult for me to deal with coming from being educated in the U.S. and then going back to Asia and being in that kind of social and corporate environment where I just felt really devalued at that time.

Linda: I wonder if you could talk about extricating yourself from that. You know, what was that decision like to leave that moment because I think my listeners… You know, many of us could find ourselves in situations where we never imagined how they would be and when they’re not supportive of us and we know we need to move. So maybe you could talk a little bit about what that decision was like for you.

Rachel: It was really, really difficult. There were many days when I just felt so stuck and depressed with not much of a future and was getting really listless and resigned. On the surface, people will look at your history or your Instagram account persona and assume that everything worked out so well for you but when you’re really in that moment, there are just many days you wake up and you just have no energy to really fight it anymore. I realized that I was even beginning to internalize it – you just believe that you’re not good enough, that maybe you’re not adding much value to your career.

For me, I think it was a stroke of luck butwhat I did was I started reaching out to other people and seeing how I can help other people. I had this opportunity to work with the Korean government on the mentorship program for Korean youth who were interested in either working abroad or pursuing an education abroad. By working with these young Korean women, coaching them, and kind of helping them and through the process of sharing my experiences and seeing their success in applying to schools and good jobs overseas really helped me also realize the value of my experiences.

By teaching them, I think they taught me so much more in return. So as much as Korea was in some ways a very painful experience for me, it was also really important as a stepping stone to Japan because after going through that I just had more confidence especially after working with so many of my mentees and other students to help them through their transitions to move out of their career that I really decided to jump into my next chapter.

Linda: It’s interesting because you’ve had a number of transitions. I wonder – do you see any similarities as you look at the transitions that you’ve made?

Rachel: Whenever you move to a different country is really easy to feel like a fish out of water and then you start self-isolating as well and feeling really alone… In many ways, we learn after doing it a few times and you become more aware of the sense that you need to break out of this comfort zone and circle that is confining you. It becomes easier every time but it still takes time so you can’t rush it – it still takes about 6 months every time you transition to anything. Moving countries and moving to a new job are usually considered 2 of the most stressful things that you can do in your life and doing them at once is extremely difficult but I think that if you have the right mind-set and of course, thankfully in my situation, I had a lot of mentors who gave me really great advice that really helps pick you up at the times you need it the most.

Linda: I love this model that you’ve put in your head that as you move or make substantial changes there is a behaviour pattern that you relied on – and granted, it wasn’t maybe the most healthy to kind of draw inward and almost constrict your activities a little bit that self-isolation for a little while to get your feet underneath you. And so it’s very interesting because I think all of us have these reflexive behaviours that we turn to particularly at times when we’re facing substantial uncertainty which is really what transition is all about – it’s really walking forward into the unknown. You know in the first couple of weeks when you’re on the ground you are in a new place, how can my listeners prepare themselves for this moment really in terms of how it’s going to feel.

Rachel: So the most difficult step would probably have been getting your feet on the ground in the first place. The reason for that is you’re going to get so many people telling you what to do or not to do. The most painful realization that I came to at some point was that sometimes the people closest to you and care for you the most are the ones that give you the most detrimental advice that holds you back. Your thinking and imagining how difficult it will be it’s probably going to be more difficult and more scary than what it actually is like when you’re going through it.

Linda: Yeah I think so so fantastic advice and I think that that’s been played out so many times on the guests that we’ve had here on Destination Unknown. Many people who do go through transitions talk about surprises. I wonder if you could share a couple of those that maybe you’ve encountered.

Rachel: So you are absolutely right that a lot of times when you go through transition you just feel really down, really broken, and tend to want to just draw into yourself and I guess to protect your inner core in that way and kind of preserve some sense of yourself. One of the challenges I faced and many other people I have worked with do encounter is how to build up that confidence again. Since Korea I have continued working with many students and young professionals coaching and mentoring them. A girl from China reach out to me and that she confided in me her story that she was being abused by her father who was an alcoholic and she felt absolutely no confidence in herself and had no support from her family to pursue an education and in fact was advice or kind of discouraged from it.

Nonetheless, she was still having his curiosity about exploring going to university are learning more about the world. After hearing her story, I really empathized with her situation where somebody’s family and friends are the ones that hold you back in some ways simply by saying that you can’t do it. So, I decided to coach her through the entire application process and she ended up getting into a top university in the US on a full scholarship. I realized that as much as I taught her and shared with her, she’s taught me so much more in return. This kind of confirmed that the place of my own existence and my values that I had doubted at many times. We heal ourselves by healing others.

Linda: I think that’s a beautiful sentiment Rachel, and I think that I’ve seen that replicated time and again for people who navigate transition that the gifts that we’re willing to extend to others come back to us tenfold and it is really quite powerful that your willingness to question what was around you and the opportunities that you had in front of you – that willingness to keep asking the question has clearly paid off for you. I am so honored to know you and to watch how you’ve grown and developed – you’ve done such an outstanding job and I can just imagine all the wonderful things are about to give to the world so I thank you for joining me and for being my guest and for your friendship.
